In this communication, sol–gel method was employed to synthesize Cd substituted CuO oxides. The substitutional effect of Cd at Cu site in Cu1–xCdxO oxides on the structural, microstructural and electrical properties has been understood. Structural studies reveal single phase nature without any detectable impurity. Scherrer’s formula and Williamson–Hall (W–H) plot analysis suggest that size of the particles increases with increase in Cd content. Microstructural studies show the enhancement in an average grain size as well as improvement in the granular compactness in the CCO samples having higher Cd content. To realize substitutional effect of Cd at Cu site in CCO system on the electrical properties, frequency dependent dielectric, impedance and ac conductivity were recorded. Variations in these electrical properties with frequency and Cd content have been understood in detail. Different theoretical aspects like relaxation mechanism, universal dielectric behavior (UDR) and power law fits have been employed.
