The Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University held a conference in celebration of International Press Freedom Day on 5 May. Abbey Makoe of the Forum for Black Journalists, Rhoda Kadalie, human rights activist, Khathu Mamaila, editor, City Press, and Henry Jeffreys, editor, Die Burger, debated the pro's and con's of media freedom. Bridging the divide between study and the real world of African journalism

Professor Lizette Rabe, Head of the Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University, Mr Joe Thloloe, Press Ombudsman, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. I am honoured to address you on the occasion of this conference that coincides with the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Department of Journalism at Stellenbosch University.The department and our organisation, Media24 and Naspers, share a long and proud partnership that spans the full 30 years of the department's existence. The department was, in fact, started by Piet Cillié, a former editor of Die Burger. Many other personalities involved with the department have also had close ties to our organisation including Johannes Grosskopf (former editor of Beeld), George Claassen (former deputy editor Die Burger) and Lizette Rabe (former editor of Sarie).When one reaches such milestones, it is appropriate to pause and reflect, in particular on the challenges facing the Department of Journalism, as it celebrates its 30 years of journalism studies. A key question to ask is to what extent are we producing journalists for this country, for this continent and for today’s world?

Questioning the ‘bleeding obvious’: What’s the point of researching journalism?

Within higher education, journalism studies is often seen as an uncomfortable bedfellow with journalism training; there is evidence of a pervasive disconnect between research and teaching, as between theory and practice. However, voices within journalism education are calling for a more critical curriculum informed by scholarly research. There are suggestions that the journalists now doing much of the teaching within university journalism departments could play a key role in establishing a more critical journalism education and, by doing so, contributing towards more critical forms of journalism. Within this context, do journalists-turned-journalism-educators see any point in researching journalism or would they rather simply pass on vocational skills to the next generation? This article is based on asking a sample group of such ‘hackademics’ working in UK and/or Irish universities about the utility of scholarly inquiry into journalism. The article suggests that exploring ostensibly ‘bleeding obvious’ aspects of journalism may not be the pointless exercise derided by some commentators; rather, it could be precisely what journalism educators ought to be doing.

ICT use by journalism professors in Colombia

<span>This article analyses how journalism professors at Colombian universities use information and communications technologies (ICT) in their teaching. Survey data was obtained during the first trimester of 2009 from 63 professors in journalism departments and from a total of 865 professors who are affiliated with journalism departments at 29 universities that belong to the Colombian Association of Journalism Departments and University Programs. These professors have, until now, replicated traditional teaching methods when employing currently available technological resources. The article discusses the factors that influence the teaching uses of ICT and the implementing of pedagogical strategies in the classroom. The results help define the profiles of professors in academic programs in which ICT use is limited, and factors such as investment of time and resources which determine the productive use of ICTs, as well as the implementation of pedagogical models related to new teaching-learning opportunities in the classrooms at Colombian universities.</span>

Teaching journalism in Ukraine: between formal and non-formal education

Formal journalism education in Ukraine has been criticized for quite a long time for still being affected by the old Soviet theory-based teaching model, rather than adhering to internationally accepted best practices. The system of teaching students at journalism departments has not changed significantly since Ukrainian independence in 1991 and many Ukrainian journalists have entered the profession with largely inadequate training. For instance, the practice of on-the-job training has been implemented only by some journalism departments, or is partly implemented by some lecturers. On the other hand, graduates of journalism programs in Ukraine say that more practical trainings help their professional growth. This article, then, aims to explicate the advantages and disadvantages that exist in Ukrainian journalism education, and it seeks to reveal whether Ukrainian journalists prefer formal or non-formal education for their profession. The findings are based on an analysis of 10 focus groups conducted with a total of 92 Ukrainian journalists (both with and without journalism degrees) and nine indepth interviews with Ukrainian lecturers and Ukrainian media representatives.
