Peningkatan Peran Pemilih Pemula dalam Penyelenggaran Pemilihan Kepala Daerah Tahun 2024

On November 27 2024, regional head elections will be held simultaneously. In the Indonesian political system, this is the first simultaneous election. In this election, based on the voter list, many novice voters were involved, namely those who were involved in voting for the first time. New voters are the future of democracy in Indonesia. Therefore, their involvement in elections is encouraged more than just voting but also being involved as election organizers. This is very important for competency development and network expansion in the future. This activity is an outreach regarding registration as an election organizer. The participants in this activity were ITSKKes Muhammadiyah Selong students. As a result of this activity, students were enthusiastic in understanding the voter registration process.

Resolution of Election Disputes for DPD Members Through Administrative Court Decisions Based on Law No. 7 of 2017 on General Elections (A Case Study of the DPD in West Sumatera Province)

This research aims to analyze the Jakarta Administrative Court Decision No. 600/G/SPPU/2023/PTUN.JKT related to the election dispute of DPD (Regional Representative Council) members in 2023, from the perspective of Law No. 7 of 2017 on General Elections and fiqh siyasah (Islamic political jurisprudence). The focus of the dispute is the alleged violations by the General Election Commission (KPU) in the process of establishing the permanent voter list and determining the election results. This study employs a normative approach with a case study to address how election disputes for DPD members are resolved through Administrative Court decisions. The analysis reveals that the Jakarta Administrative Court Decision has integrated principles of justice and transparency as outlined in fiqh siyasah, and complies with the legal provisions of Law No. 7 of 2017. However, the study also highlights some challenges in enforcing accountability and transparency by the election organizers. This decision has strategic implications for governance and strengthening democracy in Indonesia, particularly within the context of Islamic constitutional law.

The High Cost of Politics in Indonesia: An Exploration of Multi-perspectives from Academics, Students, Executive Officials, and Legislative Candidates

The issue of high electoral political costs in Indonesia has been a serious concern since the 1998 reforms. This study aims to explore the factors that contribute to the high political costs in Indonesia’s democratic electoral system. The research question posed is: “What are the factors that lead to high political costs in Indonesia’s democratic electoral system?” The study employs a qualitative method with an in-depth interview approach. The informants for this study included academics, students, executive officials, and legislative candidates, selected to explore perspectives from various levels of society and the state. The selection of these informants was based on their diverse backgrounds, which were considered capable of providing comprehensive views on this issue. The findings reveal that the high cost of politics is caused by several factors, including an unusual electoral system, a paradigm shift in political parties, the prioritization of popularity over competence, campaign finance sponsorship, payback politics, and the phenomenon of “dawn raids.” The conclusion of this study indicates that the high cost of politics is a complex problem that requires a cross-sectoral approach to find a solution. The implication of this study is the importance of a deeper analysis of the mechanisms of political financing and their impact on democracy in Indonesia. This study makes an important contribution to understanding and addressing the problem of electoral political costs in Indonesia and emphasizes the need for cross-sectoral cooperation to achieve sustainable solutions.

Digital Literacy Landscape of Novice Voters in the 2024 Election in Indonesia

Elections are one of the times when Indonesian democracy runs because the people themselves will choose a pair of president and vice president candidates along with the existing legislature. Voters need to have enough information about the candidates in order to choose the best among them, especially novice voters. Novice voters need to have good digital literacy in facing the upcoming 2024 elections. The 2024 election itself is mostly from young people who are novice voters. The purpose of this study is to determine the digital literacy readiness of novice voters in 2024 elections. In addition, it will also be known what factors influence this readiness and the impact of the readiness of novice voters on their participation in the election later. This study uses a quantitative approach with descriptive methods. Data collection was carried out using questionnaires as primary data and literature studies as secondary data. The results and conclusions obtained in this study are that the majority of novice voters use social media as an information platform about the 2024 elections with varying levels of trust in the information. Most of the respondents chose not to share the information obtained related to the verification of uncertain news.

Indonesia 2023: Looming elections and domestic uncertainty, but increasing regional, international and economic importance

The elections of 2024 loom large over Indonesia in 2023, with serious implications for the future of Indonesian democracy. Domestically, there remain issues that affect the depth of its democracy including the roles of political Islam and the military, and corruption remains an issue. Indonesia continues to play a significant role regionally and internationally, although it retains ties to both the United States (and the West) and China – seemingly hedging its bets. Its economy has recovered from the shock of the COVID-19 slowdown and is growing rapidly.

Sentiment Analysis of Support for the DPR's Right to Inquiry on the Issue of 2024 Election Fraud Using the Support Vector Machine Method

This research aims to analyze public sentiment towards supporting the DPR's right to inquiry in the 2024 Election fraud issue using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) method. Data was obtained from the social media application X which has a wide user base and is relevant to the issue under study. Comments on the application are classified into positive and negative sentiments after going through the pre-processing stage. The SVM method was chosen because of its high ability in text classification based on appropriate kernels. This research shows how much influence the X application has in identifying public sentiment and the effectiveness of the SVM method in sentiment classification. It is hoped that the research results will provide in-depth insight into public sentiment regarding the issue of fraud in the 2024 elections and support better decision making in the context of politics and democracy in Indonesia.

Indonesia’s 2024 presidential election campaign was shaped by an alliance struck between outgoing incumbent Joko (Jokowi) Widodo and a former rival, Prabowo Subianto, who chose Jokowi’s son as his running mate. The seeming affirmation of dynastic power drew criticism, as did Prabowo’s former associations with the authoritarian New Order regime and its human rights abuses. But Prabowo remade his image with his promises of free school lunches and a new “cute” persona while pledging continuity with his popular predecessor’s administration, demonstrating the ambiguities of Indonesian democracy a quarter-century after the end of the New Order era.

Boosting Novice Voters: Strategy of the Independent Election Commission for the 2024 General Election in West Aceh District

This comprehensive study examines the strategies employed by the Independent Election Commission (IEC) to boost the participation of novice voters in the pre-election phase leading up to the 2024 General Election in West Aceh District. Novice voters aged 17 to 21 play a significant role in measuring electoral efficacy and vitality. Recognized by political stakeholders, their engagement affects the electoral landscape due to their diverse characteristics and challenges compared to previous generations, such as lack of interest, awareness, knowledge, and apathy. So, this research was carried out to analyze the strategies used by the IEC towards novice voters. This study adopts David's (2004) strategy theory in strategic management, which includes formulation, implementation, and evaluation. Conducted in West Aceh Regency, this study examines the initiatives and challenges of the IEC in engaging novice voters. Through careful empirical data analysis, this study aims to improve the electoral process and consolidate democracy in Indonesia. The research findings reveal insights into the effectiveness of the IEC's strategies and highlight areas for improvement. This study provides valuable insights for future election planning, encouraging more equitable and inclusive practices. However, several problems in its implementation need to be resolved, mainly the need for more human resources and budget.

Authority of Amicus Curiae in Constitutional proceedings : Bridging Society and the Constitutional Court

Amicus Curiae, or friends of the court, is an important instrument in constitutional proceedings in Indonesia even though it does not yet have a standard legal basis. This study discusses the authority of Amicus Curiae in providing additional information, enriching the judge's consideration, and supervising the proceedings of the Constitutional Court. The method used is the literature study approach, which is a research method whose series of research is related to the method of collecting library data, or research whose object of research is studied through various literature information, such as: books, journals, articles and documents. Amicus Curiae is filed in the form of a written document containing legal arguments and other relevant analysis. The Constitutional Court has the authority to reject Amicus Curiae that are judged irrelevant or filed with improper motives. On the other hand, a quality Amicus Curiae can have a positive influence on the decisions of the Constitutional Court and contribute to law enforcement and democracy in Indonesia. Amicus Curiae has not been clearly regulated in Indonesia, but in principle it is accepted under article 5 paragraph 1 of the Law on Judicial Power "Judges and constitutional judges are obliged to explore, follow and understand the legal values and sense of justice that live in society. Furthermore, the confession of the Amicus Curiae can be found in article 180 paragraph 1 of the Code of Criminal Procedure which states that "In the event that it is necessary to clear up the sitting of the matter arising in court, the presiding judge of the trial may request expert testimony and may also request to submit new material by the interested person.

Article 222 of Law Number 17 of 2017 concerning Presidential and Vice Presidential Elections states that "Candidate pairs are proposed by political parties or combinations of political parties participating in the election who meet the requirements to obtain seats of at least 20% of the total number of seats in the DPR or obtain 25% of the valid national votes in election of members of the DPR. With these regulations there are inconsistencies, on the one hand this country adheres to democracy, but on the other hand there are restrictions on the rights of citizens who wish to run for president and/or vice president. Research on the presidential threshold system is important to understand its impact on the political system and democracy in Indonesia. So that we can understand how this system influences community political participation, the diversity of presidential and vice presidential candidates, and the representation of community interests. The method used is normative legal research. These provisions reduce political inclusivity by limiting the variety of options for voters and restricting access for various groups of society. And influence democratic representation by suppressing votes for minority candidates or those representing special interests.

The manipulation of identity politics in Indonesian electoral democracy today: Between regulations and practices

Electoral contestation in recent Indonesian election periods is faced with the challenge of polarization linked to identity politics, where initially assigned identity is leveraged as tools for political competition. This is a qualitative research, using interviews, observations, and direct group discussion methods to collect data from five different regions in Indonesia. The research focused on the presence of governing regulations and how they develop in complex dynamics. The results showed that identity politics was prevalent in all regions due to mobilization through identity manipulation to gain electoral political advantage. Furthermore, electoral characteristics showed a growing tendency toward polarization, primarily in terms of religion and ethnicity, with some issues related to regionalism, gender, religious affiliations, and family history networks. It was also found that weak regulations on identity manipulation led to increasing permissiveness among political actors, the state, and voters. This made identity issues become natural electoral problems, despite weakening the developing democracy in Indonesia. In this context, future contests in Indonesia are expected to consistently intensify identity politics, with the lack of regulations, permissiveness, and social media serving as the main driving factors.

Maimun Zubair and Response of Social, Political, and Religious Problems in Indonesia: A Study of Safīnatu Kallā Saya’lamūn fī Tafsīr Maimun Zubair by Lora Ismail Al-Ascholy

Tafsir Al-Qur’an always reflects the reality faced by the interpreter. This paper will analyze Kiai Maimun Zubair’s response to social, political, and religious issues in Indonesia through Safīnatu Kallā Saya’lamūn. This interpretation comes from the study of Tafsir al-Jalālayn presented by Kiai Maimun Zubair in Javanese, then translated into Arabic by his student, Lora Ismail Al-Ascholy. Kiai Maimun Zubair is an active figure in the pesantren environment and has extensive experience in the Indonesian political sphere. Therefore, an in-depth exploration of his interpretation is essential. The research methods used in this study are descriptive, historical, and explanatory, applying Teun A. Van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis. The results of this study show that Kiai Maimun Zubair uses tafsir to understand God’s words in the Qur’an and as a platform to express his views and responses to social, political, and religious phenomena in contemporary Indonesia. He highlighted issues such as agriculture in Indonesia, criticism of democracy in Indonesia, and independence of the Republic. Safīnatu Kallā Saya’lamūn describes the social, political, and religious situation in contemporary Indonesia and significantly contributes to discussing these issues. His attitude reflects the paradigm of thought of pesantren scholars who are firm in their attitudes and beliefs, thus making pesantren play an active role in Indonesia’s development process.

Inter-Time Change (PAW) in the context of Indonesian democracy is often in the spotlight in political dynamics. This research uses normative legal methods with a statutory approach to analyze the legal and political aspects of PAW. The aim of this research is to examine the implications of PAW in the representative democracy system in Indonesia as well as the relationship between council members and political parties. The research results show that PAW is often used as a control tool by political parties over council members who are not in line with party policies. In conclusion, PAW has a strong legal basis but needs a more transparent mechanism so as not to shift the direction of people's representatives to become representatives of the interests of political parties.

This research analyzes the role of mass media in the democratization process in Indonesia after the fall of the New Order in 1998. Using a literature study method, this research evaluates the role of mass media in disseminating information, facilitating public dialogue, and strengthening government accountability. Political reforms have allowed the media to report important issues more freely, contributing to government transparency and accountability. The mass media also serves as a platform for public discussion, helping the public understand national issues and become more critical voters. However, the mass media faces significant challenges, including intense competition among media channels, dependence on political and economic interests, and the risk of information manipulation. The research results show that despite these challenges, the mass media remains a vital element in promoting democratization in Indonesia by increasing public participation and political transparency. Steps to strengthen media integrity and professionalism, as well as media education for the public, are essential to ensure that the mass media can continue to play a role as a pillar of a healthy and sustainable democracy.

The Role of Pancasila Education and Citizenship Subject Teachers in Strengthening Pancasila Democratic Values for High School Students

The subject of Pancasila and Civic Education (PPKn) is the most strategic subject to strengthen students' democratic attitudes because it is closely related to habits or customs that need to be improved in everyday life so that it is easier to practice. The role of Civics teachers is needed to direct students to get maximum teaching and be able to practice democratic values. This article aims to find out the meaning of Pancasila and Citizenship Education, Pancasila democracy, and analyze the role of teachers in strengthening democratic values in high school students. The literature study method with a literature review approach was applied by the author in preparing the article. Data collection techniques use documentation studies by collecting documents that are in accordance with the research topic. The results of the study explained that Pancasila and Citizenship Education is a subject that is closely related to lessons that relate to human relations in a country, whether social, economic, or political relations. Pancasila democracy is a system of government that is run in Indonesia based on the values contained in Pancasila itself. The results of the analysis of the role of Civics teachers in high school students show that the role of educators is very important to apply and implement democratic values for students. The implementation is shown by several democratic attitudes such as freedom of opinion, respect for other people's opinions, deliberation to reach consensus, accustoming students to participate in elections within the school, and so on. Strengthening democratic values is very important to teach because students are part of society who will later play a role in monitoring democracy in Indonesia.

Pancasila serves as the foundation of the Indonesian state and the principal ideology guiding the formulation and implementation of government policies. This research aims to provide evaluative and informative material on Pancasila from a human rights perspective. The study falls within the juridical-normative category, involving the examination of theories, concepts, legal principles, and regulations pertinent to the research subject. Specifically, this research seeks to evaluate and elucidate the human rights dimensions embedded within Pancasila values. Pancasila underscores the protection of individual rights as articulated in the 1945 Constitution, which guarantees fundamental rights such as the right to life, the right to freedom of religion, and the right to education. This study examines the protection of human rights within the context of Pancasila democracy in Indonesia. Utilizing a literature review and an empirical data approach, the article delves into the philosophical and legal underpinnings of Pancasila democracy and its implications for human rights protection in Indonesia. As the state ideology, Pancasila democracy emphasizes the importance of participation, justice, and welfare for all citizens, including the safeguarding of human rights. In Pancasila democracy, the protection of human rights is a paramount responsibility of the Indonesian state. By strengthening law enforcement, ensuring the fair application of laws, and fostering active societal participation, Indonesia can guarantee and respect the rights of every citizen in alignment with the democratic principles of Pancasila.
