Development of pitch perception and memory of general psychological abilities in children speaking tonal languages. A comparative approach

The development of pitch perception and memory in language and music among 6- to 15-year-old Otomi-speaking children of either sex and Zapotec-speaking children of the same age and of either sex was studied. These languages are characterized by the use of lexical tones. For the analysis of musical abilities, Bentley’s Tests of Pitch Discrimination and of Tonal Memory were employed; for that of language abilities, special tests were devised that measured the perception and memory of tonal changes in either Otomi or Zapotec words. Results showed that development of abilities in music in Otomi-speaking children followed a course that was parallel to, although significantly below, that obtained by Bentley in his original study of 1966 in England. In the Otomi-speaking group, the course of development of abilities in language was above that of those in music. On the other hand, the same tests in Zapotec-speaking children provided data that were very irregular and further below the average obtained by the Otomi-speaking children. Interestingly, the application of Raven’s Progressive Matrices and Koppitz’s Test of Human Figure Drawings to these two groups of subjects indicated that, generally, Zapotec-speaking children had a higher cognitive level than Otomi-speaking children. A hospital-based series of 158 patients with neurofibromatosis I, including 138 adults aged >18 years and 20 children, were evaluated for neurological complications in adulthood at the Services de Neurologie and Neuroradiologie, Hopital Henri Mondor, Paris, France.

Neurocisticercosis y epilepsia en Cuba

Neurocysticercosis is one of the main causes of epilepsy in the tropics, particularly in Central and South America. To report the only five patients diagnosed in a tertiary care institution as having neurocysticercosis and its relation to epilepsy. We made a retrospective study, reviewing the clinical histories of patients admitted to the Instituto de Neurologia y Neurocirugia of La Habana, Cuba, over 25 years up to 1989, to determine those with neurocysticercosis. We found only five patients, representing a frequency of 0.01% of all admissions. We discuss the origin of these cases and their possible place of infection, showing that this is almost non-existent in Cuba since three of the cases were of foreigners and there was evidence that the two Cubans had acquired the disease abroad. The correlation between neurocysticercosis and epilepsy (4 of 5 cases) was assessed. The main symptoms were analyzed: the three most important, in order, were tonic-clonic convulsions, headache and motor deficit respectively. The epileptic seizures were classified as secondary generalized partial seizures (symptomatic partial epilepsy secondary to cysticercosis). The clinical form, when the site is considered, was inactive, with intraparenchymatous and meningeal (mixed) calcifications in one case. We assess the elements which permit diagnosis, the efficacy of anti-helminth treatment and the drugs used to treat epilepsy and cerebral oedema, the prognosis as a function of the diagnosis and the treatment.

Neuropatía óptica hereditaria de Leber y su posible relación con la reciente epidemia de Cuba

This century, the greatest epidemic affecting the nervous system was notified in Cuba seven years ago. At the present time the epidemic continues although to a lesser extent. The clinical findings of the illness were mainly bilateral optic neuropathy sometimes accompanied by other symptoms and peripheral neuropathy. The similarity of the optic form of the illness with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, and their common risk factors, were obvious from the beginning. Statistics from the national reference department of neuro-ophthalmology of the Instituto de Neurologia de Cuba were reviewed. From these it was evident that the number of cases of Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy had increased in recent years, coinciding with the period of epidemic and endemic Cuban neuropathy. Many of these patients had previously been diagnosed as having epidemic optic neuropathy. We describe the characteristics of a group of these patients and discuss the differences and possible relationship between the two conditions. In the case of epidemic optic neuropathy, there is strikingly simultaneous loss of vision, less visual changes with much smaller cecocentral scotomas, loss of ganglion fibres of the retina around the papillomacular bundle, a good response to multivitamin treatment, and increased frequency of association with peripheral sensory neuropathy. This analysis reinforces the hypothesis that many patients with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy, which started at the time of the epidemic, were incorrectly classified as suffering from this, and also perhaps their condition worsened due to the toxic nutritional features common to both conditions.

The new communication techniques and, particularly, Internet, are changing our way of collaborating, relating to each other and searching for information, paving the way for telemedicine. Such initiatives are described in the Revista de Neurologia, as well as the methodology followed to prepare the first Electronic Forum of the Revista de Neurologia on 'Internet, Medicine and Neurology', using the web, IRC and E-mail tools.

Genetics of Friedreich Ataxia

Genotype-phenotype correlations in a group of 100 patients with typical Friedreich ataxia (FRDA), and in three smaller clinically atypical groups (Arcadian FRDA, late-onset FRDA (LOFA), and FRDA with retained reflexes (FARR)), were studied at the Centre de Recherche Louis-Charles Simard, Service de Genetique Medicale, Service de Neurologie, Hopital Sainte-Justine, Departments of Genetics and Medicine, McGill University, Montreal General Hospital, and other centers.

The frequency, and clinical, molecular, and neuropathological features of spinocerebellar ataxia 3 (SCA3) and Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) in 125 autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxia (ADCA) families were analyzed at the Service de Neuropathologie, Hopital de la Salpetriere, Paris, and Service de Neurologie, Hopital de Haut Leveque, Pessac, France; and Service de Neurologie, Hopital des Specialites, Rabat, Morocco.

Vitamin E Deficiency Familial Ataxic Syndrome

A total of 8 members of two consanguineous Tunisian families affected with Friedreich’s ataxia (FA) phenotype not linked to chromosome 9 were found to have very low levels of serum vitamin E (0.5 mcg/ml cf 8 mcg/ml in controls) in a study at the Institut National de Neurologie, Tunis, and at Centers in Cyprus and France.
