Implementation of Religious Moderation Values in College Students

This Article aims to describe how the implementation of religious moderation values at Fakultas Tarbiyah dan Ilmu Keguruan UIN Salatiga. This article is one of the efforts to prevent the spread of radicalism among student who have been threatening. This research use a qualitative approach and type of field research. Data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques using data presentation, data reduction, and drawing conclusions. The result of the study are a descpriotion of the religious moderation values at Fakultas Tarbiyah dan Ilmu Keguruan UIN Salatiga which include national commitment, tolerance, peace, and accommodation of lokal culture. National commitment is implemented with the culture of singing the “Indonesia Raya” at every event. Tolerance is implemented with mutual respect for each other. Peace is implemented with a culture of friendship and “tabayyun”. Lokal cultural accommodation is implemented with art performances.

Becoming an Antwerp Humanist: The Culture of Friendship and Patronage in the Circles of Benito Arias Montano (1568–1598)

Abstract When the Spanish humanist Benito Arias Montano (c.1525-1598) arrived in Antwerp in1568 to work as editor of the new Polyglot Bible printed by Christophe Plantin, he was introduced to some of the leading members of the Republic of Letters of his time (such as Abraham Ortelius and Carolus Clusius), with whom he exchanged letters, books, portraits, and other tangible tokens of friendship until his dying day. From this hub of intellectual and typographical activity, Montano circulated devotional emblem books across a vast network of Catholic and Protestant scholars, politicians and ecclesiastics. These “instruments of friendship” established his reputation as a man of letters while serving the interests of both king Philip II and Plantin that ranged from cultural diplomacy to editorial and commercial strategy. This study highlights how, in addition to correspondence, the circulation of books, images and objects were essential tools of early modern scholarly practices and learned sociability.

During his time in England as the lead court artist, Anthony van Dyck came into contact with the English Virtuosi, their discourses and their practical research into nature. This article examines the connection between English virtuosity and ideal ideas of friendship and the role that the artist played in this. Argueing that Van Dyck was part of a friendly circle of said Virtuosi and reconstructing that circle on a small scale, it discusses the famous double portrait of Van Dyck and Endymion Porter as a portrait of friendship as well as a product of the symbiotic culture of friendship and English virtuosity and the making of knowledge that springs from it.

The Luckin coffee phenomenon in China, and the development of information and communication technology have triggered the development of contemporary coffee in Indonesia. The contemporary coffee that combines coffee with milk, coupled with putting forward the concept of an instagrammable, comfortable outlet, is the main attraction for the millennials. This study uses the uses and effect theory, and the marketing concept 4.0. The method used in this research is qualitative method. The results obtained from this study are that the marketing method carried out by coffee now promotes marketing 4.0, by integrating marketing channels, payment channels and logistics channels through online and offline systems. If coffee was once known as drinks for elder people, with the development of technology, many marketers are utilizing the interaction of internet users to market their products. Another impact of technological development is the emergence of convergence. Convergence in this case not only on the impact of media on life, but convergence has given rise to a new culture. This can be seen from the number of young people who began to use coffee as part of a culture of friendship and style in social activities.

Culture of Friendship Among the Apatanis of Arunachal Pradesh

The Apatanis of Ziro Valley are a tribe in Arunachal Pradesh. The community is known for their sedentary agriculture among all dry farming communities in this state. It is sustained without the use of draught power and an indigenously developed irrigation system. Inhabiting a small sequestered plateau, their agriculture represents the most efficient in terms of energy use. Among the traditional institutions of the Apatani is the labour gang known as the Pataň. Its composition is based largely on village friendship cutting across genders that are equally represented, in addition to kinship-based unity. This aspect is evident in a tradition during Myoko festival where friends visit across villages to renew their ties. The festival and its associated rituals also assign a special position to friendship. The paper seeks to explore the ritual aspect of friendship and its relevance of friendship in the circulation of labour for sedentary agriculture.

Commentary: Urban friendship: Towards an alternative anthropological genealogy

This commentary outlines an intellectual genealogy of urban friendship stretching from the 1950s to the present, which influenced my own work on friendship. It begins by tracing this developing theory grounded in a basic contrast between close-knit, segregated networks and loose-knit or widely ramifying networks. Such morphological features define gender roles, friendship cultures and peer-group loyalties. Against the view that urban friendship is restricted to the intimate, private domain, I argue that friendship mediates structures of class and urban cognitive mapping. It is also the basis for the formation of elites and of the interdomestic domain – the setting for tournaments of value among immigrants newcomers. I further propose that elective friendship in voluntary organisations such as Sufi orders cuts across kinship, place and national boundaries. A rather darker, more dialectical conception of urban individual subjectivity emerges from Georg Simmel’s theorisation of the modern capitalist metropolis as a place of ‘freedom’, but also of anonymity and alienation, and of a ‘reserved’, distrustful attitude. This Simmelian vision is articulated, I propose, in many of the articles in this special issue, concerned with the ambivalences of friendship and the nature of fleeting friendships.

Active listening is a communication skill which is crucial for the development of cooperative relationships in the group, culture of friendship and fellowship, it is also important for the development of literacy skills and talent for speaking. Furthermore, it contributes to the improvement of the level of knowledge, skills and school achievement, as well as to the development of self-confidence of children. Developing of active listening is an important task in the activities with children of preschool age. In this paper, the author, wanting to determine the importance of the factors of active listening of preschool children, examines how preschool teachers (N = 198): (a) evaluate the importance of certain elements of active listening that relate to the speaker and the listener, and (b) estimate their role in the process of developing active listening skills of preschool children as an essential element of successful interpersonal communication. Results of the survey show that preschool teachers attach greater importance to the factors of active listening related to the listener (attention, listening skill, interest in the subject), than to the factors related to the speaker (motivation for listening, quality of the narrative). More than two-thirds of surveyed preschool teachers (172 or 86.9%) define its impact on the stimulation of active listening of children as significant. Work experience and professional qualifications as independent variables significantly influence the attitudes of preschool teachers about the importance of their impact in stimulating active listening. Preschool teacher is a key element of the training of preschool children in the area of the basic communication skills of active listening. In this sense, the results of our survey show that in the context of academic study programs for education of preschool teachers special attention is given to the communication skills and to their role in the development of active listening. But, bearing in mind the neglection of listening in comparison to other language skills, it is necessary to pay more attention to the improvement of the culture of listening, both in formal and nonformal, as well as in informal education and training of preschool teachers.

Friendships and portraits in the age of romanticism: Reflections on eight portraits by C. A. Jensen

Friendships play an important part in our lives, but few of us think about how the cultural convention of friendship makes us act. Studies of the nineteenth century show that during the period of German romanticism it became fashionable amongst poets, writers, and artists to celebrate and visualize friendships. In the 1810s, Rome seemed the perfect incubator for young artists forming friendships and cultivating artistic communities. The most remarkable output of the painter C. A. Jensen’s Italian sojourn, starting in 1818, was eight small portraits of his circle of friends. These portraits reflect the importance of fellowship, of networking amongst friends and also what Rome meant to young artists in terms of finding one’s artistic identity. The aim of this article is to illuminate how a romantic culture of friendship influenced C. A. Jensen’s decision to paint his circle of friends at Rome. Taking Jensen’s portraits as its point of departure, the article touches upon some artistic and sociological aspects of friendships in the age of romanticism.

Online relationship management, friendship cultures, and ego-networks of young people in Thailand and Austria

This article introduces a cross-cultural research project involving researchers from Bangkok, Thailand, and Vienna, Austria, and explores the effects of social network services (SNS) on practices of friendship initiation and relationship management among young adults. The focus of inquiry was on differences with regard to the organization of social networks, practices of friendship management, and the mutual interference between media and technology usage and lifestyles. On the basis of explorative interviews and group discussions with young adults living in the two cities studied, we developed a standardized online questionnaire to examine how participation in SNS, such as “Facebook” and “Hi5,” has an impact on the meaning of friendship. In addition, we analyzed ego-network structures and their implications for social integration.

This article explores normative control in a culture of friendship. In-depth qualitative data gathered at a management consultancy firm reveal how management seeks to foster informal, intimate, and apparently egalitarian relations with employees. This is conceptualized as a culture of friendship, indicative of broader trends toward individuality, choice, and antiauthoritarianism. Through a comparison with family culture, the paper develops how in a culture of friendship, despite the emphasis on freedom, openness, and spontaneity, normative control is accentuated and extended, involving certain paradoxes and reinforcing control circles.

Keeping a Distance

Distance is central to both Heidegger’s depiction of being-in-the-world and Derrida’s theorization of the culture of friendship. It is equally fundamental to the structure of language and, I argue, to the concept of the foreign. This essay brings together these theories of distance and demonstrates the ways they act on and through each other, the role that linguistic distance plays in constructing both foreigners and friends, and the permeable semantic boundaries that the concept of distance shares with movement, strangeness, instability, and indefiniteness. It further contends that this semantic seepage has proven threatening to certain species of philosophy and politics and prompted disciplinary efforts – to eradicate distance, regulate foreigners, immobilize meaning, and stabilize friendship – that are remarkably structurally similar and sometimes mutually supportive, but that both Heidegger and Derrida, by contrast, undertake a significant revaluation of distance and the foreignness and indeterminacy associated with it.

Any Letter for me? Relationships Between an Elementary School Letter Writing Program and Student Attitudes, Literacy Achievement, and Friendship Culture

This study involved the development, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive schoolwide mailing program as a practical tool to communicate enthusiasm towards writing to children and actively engage them in letter writing. The author played the dual role of teacher-researcher and worked for one school year with one teacher from each grade level from grade 1 to grade 5. The objective of the study was to explore the relationship between an innovative mailing program and children’s attitudes towards letter writing. This study employed both qualitative (conference with teachers) and quantitative (survey) methods. The author initiated the study with a presentation to the teachers (during a staff meeting) and to the children (in an assembly), systematically collected feedback from teachers to assess the program throughout the year, informed parents (through school newsletters), and assessed children’s attitudes towards both writing and letter writing at the beginning and end of the program. It was anticipated that the program would provide children with authentic writing experiences, foster positive attitudes towards writing, enhance their literacy skills, and in turn strengthen a “friendship culture” in the school by being coparticipants as readers and writers in the letter writing process. Data analysis indicated that children enjoyed the responsive letter writing process and that their self-perceptions as writers and their writing skills improved. Results support the introduction of an elementary school mailing program as a means to cultivate and strengthen positive relationships between pupils and invite family participation.

Twelfth-century Epistolary Language of Friendship Reconsidered. The Case of Guibert of Gembloux

Historians regard the twelfth century as the golden age of friendship. Nevertheless, the correct interpretation of this culture of friendship and its literary manifestations is under debate. Researchers into the amicitia debate increasingly rely on the “ network approach”, which is centered on the use of the language of friendship. In the present article, this quantitative approach is applied to a late twelfth-century collection of letters by a Benedictine monk, Guibert of Gembloux, and is complemented by a close reading of four case studies. Guibert’s correspondence attests to a spiritual interpretation of friendship that can function as an identifying discourse within a horizontal network among a monastic elite.

Belonging to a community‐based football team: An ethnographic study

This study considered the benefits derived from participation in a community-based Australian Rules Football league in Melbourne, Australia. The RecLink league deliberately tackles the social and occupational disadvantages associated with mental illness, addictions, unemployment and homelessness. An ethnographic methodology was used to study one team from the RecLink football league throughout an entire season. Fieldnotes were written following participant observation at training, games and events, and five in-depth interviews were conducted and transcribed. A constant comparative approach to data analysis was adopted. Three major themes were identified: a spirit of inclusion, team-building and meaning of team involvement. The first describes how members were accepted, welcomed and given the opportunity for team involvement, with the expectation that they 'had a go', and 'tried their best'. The second illustrates how the team collectively fostered a culture of friendship, cooperation and support. The third examines the significance of being part of the team, incorporating personal contributions and gains, and meanings attributed to team involvement. These findings demonstrated how football can be used as non-clinical, community-based occupational therapy: enabling participation in a personally meaningful and culturally valued occupation. Occupational therapists are challenged to explore further how such community-based sports programs may complement existing clinical and welfare-based approaches to social disadvantage.

Friendships in Childhood and Adolescence: The Life Course and New Directions

Contemporary sociologists and psychologists have long been interested in youth friendship, and have generated a large but disconnected body of literature on this topic. In this essay, I advocate using life course theory to weave together the varied elements of this literature and to generate new lines of research for the next millennium. First, I survey four general themes of contemporary research: friendship and development, the nature and structure of friendship, friendship culture, and the social context of friendship. Second, I explore how life course theory can bridge sociological and psychological research by viewing friendship as shaped by sociohistorical forces and as regulating human development. Four general issues are discussed: pathways and trajectories, the social embeddedness of relationships, long-term perspectives on friendship, and methodological issues pertinent to life course treatments of friendship. By drawing on life course principles, future researchers can advance understanding of the role of friendship in young people's lives.

Researching girls: a post-structuralist approach

This article focuses on recent empirical research on girls carried out from a feminist post-structuralist position. The authors consider the theoretical advantages of using this framework for understanding girls’ friendships and relationships between sisters, neglected spheres of female experience. They draw on Walkerdine’s research in schools and her focus on power relations between young children and teachers. The central part of their paper centres on a discussion and application of three key analytic concepts: power relations, language, and subjectivity, which are used to theorise the lives of young women in research. Hey took up these concepts in order to analyse multiple differences in girls’ friendship cultures and Mauthner used them to create four discourses for exploring sister ties. In the last section of the article, the authors take it in turns to describe examples of their data. They conclude with some reflections on the benefits of a feminist post-structural approach for educational practitioners’ own interpretation of the specific cultures in which they are located.

Friendship: Bonds and Binds in a Voluntary Relationship

This paper develops an approach to the understanding of cultural problems in the friendship bond. Utilizing depth interview field data from respondents of both sexes aged eighteen to eighty, plus self-reports of friendship problems by college students and applicable theories of relationship behaviour, two important aspects of friendship culture are probed: (1) the desirable personality traits of friends and the expectation that these will not change; (2) the assumption of an unwritten contract between friends concerning the provision of aid and the repayment of kindnesses. The two major characteristics of the friendship bond that make it both unique in human group life and attractive - freedom and intimacy - also set in motion an internal dialectic which can be the basis of problems between friends or the eventual demise of the relationship. The voluntary aspect of friendship means that it has little of the societal support that other relationships enjoy and that behaviour between friends is freely selected; the intimacy aspect is in direct contradiction to this in that it suggests that the behaviour between friends should fulfil certain expectations which they individually develop. These contradictory pressures also make prior discussion of continuance of attractive traits and expectations almost impossible. Thus, the friendship bond is exceedingly fragile when compared with other, more institutionalized relationships such as marriage. Analytic points for this study are illustrated by descriptions of problematic situations from actual friendships in which the exigencies of life trigger (almost inevitably) the contradictory aspects of the friendship bond.
