Efforts to Increase Archipelago Identity Awareness through Digital Collage Learning for Class XII 8 Students of SMA Negeri 13 Surabaya

In the current era of globalization, many students are experiencing a cultural identity crisis, where they are more likely to appreciate foreign culture than local culture. This phenomenon can be seen among students of SMA Negeri 13 Surabaya, where students' interest in the archipelago's cultural activities tends to be low. This study aims to increase awareness of the archipelago's cultural identity among students of class XII 8 SMA Negeri 13 Surabaya through digital collage learning. The method used is a cultural arts learning approach with the theme of the archipelago which is carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection stages. The results showed that students were not only able to complete the task well, but also produce quality collage works. There was a significant increase in students' understanding of the culture of the archipelago, which was reflected in the average pre-test score of 58 to 82 in the post-test. Some students even published their work on social media, indicating an increase in cultural awareness. This research is expected to be a reference for other teachers in developing art and culture learning methods that are more interesting and relevant to modern technology. The conclusion of this research shows that digital collage learning is effective in improving students' understanding of Nusantara culture. Students show active involvement in the learning process, which can be seen from students' activeness in the learning process.

Research on Product Design Based on User Experience and Sharing Cultural Heritage

Unreasonable user behavior in designing products and passing down cultural heritage may result in a cultural identity crisis, presenting a significant obstacle to establishing a high-quality cultural heritage setting. This paper focuses on studying the irrational behavior of users in product design and inheritance culture, examining its main features and characteristics. In addition, after an in-depth analysis of the emotional presentation and causes of users’ irrational expressions, we propose coping strategies to improve the user experience and correct their behavior. By enhancing cultural self-awareness, improving the design process and user engagement, and fostering intercultural communication, we will support cultural heritage’s balanced and sustainable growth.

In the context of globalization, the impact of multiculturalism will inevitably lead to the crisis of cultural identity, and foreign language education has an inevitable conflict with existing national cultural genes. The purpose of this paper is to balance the world and nationality of foreign language education for ethnic minorities, and then realize the stable, coordinated and sustained extension of foreign language education for ethnic minorities.

В ПОИСКАХ КУЛЬТУРНОЙ ИДЕНТИЧНОСТИ (опыт интерпретации фильма Д. Фёдорова «Москвы не бывает»)

The concept of identity is a complex phenomenon, which includes the desire of an individual to belong to one or another ethno-national, confessional, social, political, religious, professional, linguistic and other communities. At the same time, self-identification as self-identity is the most important component of cultural identity. At the turn of XX–XXI centuries the Russian society faced with the problem of identity, along with unresolved economic, political, social and general cultural problems. It deals with identity of the nation as a whole, of individual groups, and of the individual. In general, the crisis of cultural identity can be seen as a global trend.

NEW MEDIA AND IDENTITY CRISES: A CHALLENGE OF CULTURAL HOMOGENIZATION

Due to the supply of modern networks considerable modifications are now bringing new trends to media, consumer interaction and knowledge. New media and modern technology leads towards better infrastructure, reordering factual information which is followed by updated global networks and free flow of international communication. Moreover the paper reveals that effects of globalization and new media has influenced the younger youth as compared to the older youth, as result of that the uniqueness of identity is transformed in to one global identity and changes in the cultural patterns. CONTEXTUALIZING THE CONCEPT OF EXILE AND THE OTHER: THE SEARCH FOR IDENTITY IN EDWARD W. SAID'S OUT OF PLACE

The autobiographical work, Out of Place, sheds light on the identity crisis by presenting sections from the author's life. The East and West conflict experienced by Edward W. Said is a crisis of cultural identity caused by the problem of not belonging as being ‘the other’. The fundamental differences in the perspective of the two communities on life determine the extent of this conflict. This identity crisis of being ‘the other’, which has deepened the sense of rootlessness and uncertainty in cultural memory, prompted Edward W. Said to write his autobiography. Said, in his work, successfully presented the crisis of identity and the sense of (un)belonging that he aroused because of both the effect of the displacement he experienced due to the conditions of the period and the effect of living in Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt as an Arab-Christian American citizen with a British name and living in America as an Arab since his childhood. The subject of this study is the identity crisis that Edward W. Said experienced as a result of his birth in Arab lands as a child of a Christian family and then leaving his country and immigrating to the West due to the political conditions of the period and so that of his becoming ‘the other’ in wherever he stayed. It is the main purpose of this study to determine whether Said's exile life and his identity problem as being ‘the other’ influenced the author's personality and work; if any, what kind of effect it has. The author's identity problem of being the other and his perspective against this problem will be examined by doing context analysis with direct quotations from the work. Furthermore, in this study, autobiographical work of Said, who is stuck between the “clash of civilizations” and seeking an answer to the question "who am I?”, named Out of Place (Yersiz Yurtsuz) will be analyzed by using the positivist method focusing on the concept of immigration, exile and othering. In this method, it is aimed to explore the relationship between life and work of the writer, considering that the literary work is a product created depending on the life story of the author himself.

EMI as a Form of Cultural Hegemony

This paper aims to provide critical analysis of the relevant literature, particularly focusing on how English as a Medium of Instruction has promoted cultural hegemony in the context of developing countries. The descriptive summary from the documentary analysis of recent literature helps to develop the argument on different themes. This paper reports that the current trend of adopting English as the medium of instruction is one of the forms of cultural hegemony as the government endorses EMI policy in the national curriculum focusing to develop English competence as the determiner of quality education, index of socioeconomic status and the foundation of students‟ career. Moreover, it indicates that EMI has served the elites to channelize their power and hegemony resulting the wider educational gaps, socio-economic inequality, marginalisation of the local languages, confusion in educational language policies, linguistic and cultural identity crisis and implementational challenges in theory and practice levels. It is significant to understand the practice and outcomes of EMI in the different educational settings in many multicultural countries including Nepal. The paper suggests developing critical discourses among the stakeholders, policymakers, educators and parents to create the appropriate model of multilingual pedagogy to prevent the English hegemony.

CULTURAL IDENTITY CRISIS IN THE NOVEL KADANG SURINAME SANAK MERAPI BY FUJI RIANG PRASTOWO

The crisis of cultural identity often occurs in Indonesian society. This social phenomenon generally occurs in the young generation, especially those living in urban areas such as Jakarta. This social phenomenon depicted in the novel Kadang Suriname Sanak Merapi (KSSM) by Fuji Riang Prastowo. Trisnah as the main character in the novel, chose Western culture as her cultural identity rather than Javanese culture which is her origin. The researchaims to analyze the identity crisis factors of Trisnah's character that influenced her in the process of selecting her cultural identity in the novel KSSM. The method used in this research is a qualitative method with a sociological approach to literature, a mimetic approach and a psychology approach to literature. The results of this research indicated that Trisnah`s cultural identity crisis is caused by two factors, namely social and psychological aspects that are interrelated, especially in the process of choosing her cultural identity. These two factors influenced the forming process of Trisnah's cultural identity by releasing the Javanese cultural identity inherited by her family. Therefore it can be concluded that two factors, both social and psychological, from bullying can provide a significant impact on the formation of a person's cultural identity, especially when they were in the midst of their identity crisis, so it is important to have character education in responding to differences in a multicultural society.KEYWORDS: cultural identity crisis, cultural identity, social, psychology, traumatic

Penerapan Convolutional Neural Networks untuk Mesin Penerjemah Bahasa Daerah Minangkabau Berbasis Gambar

One of efforts by the Indonesian people to defend the country is to preserve and to maintain the regional languages. The current era of modernity makes the regional language image become old-fashioned, so that most them are no longer spoken. If it is ignored, then there will be a cultural identity crisis that causes regional languages to be vulnerable to extinction. Technological developments can be used as a way to preserve regional languages. Digital image-based artificial intelligence technology using machine learning methods such as machine translation can be used to answer the problems. This research will use Deep Learning method, namely Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN). Data of this research were 1300 alphabetic images, 5000 text images and 200 vocabularies of Minangkabau regional language. Alphabetic image data is used for the formation of the CNN classification model. This model is used for text image recognition, the results of which will be translated into regional languages. The accuracy of the CNN model is 98.97%, while the accuracy for text image recognition (OCR) is 50.72%. This low accuracy is due to the failure of segmentation on the letters i and j. However, the translation accuracy increases after the implementation of the Leveinstan Distance algorithm which can correct text classification errors, with an accuracy value of 75.78%. Therefore, this research has succeeded in implementing the Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) method in identifying text in text images and the Leveinstan Distance method in translating Indonesian text into regional language texts.

National and cultural identity crisis of Bosnia and Herzegovina Serbs within Austro-Hungarian Empire (1878–1908)

The purpose of this article is to reveal the causes of national and cultural identity crisis of Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the period of Austro-Hungarian occupation and annexation, which led to modifications of their self-identity. The paper meets this research aim through an extensive study of the relevant literature presenting the views of Serbian and Russian scholars. On the basis of comparative-historical and socio-cultural approaches, the authors collate the existing definitions of ethnic, national and cultural identity and define the crucial factors that make the cornerstone of cultural identity: mother tongue, ethnicity, territory, religion, habitat, food, mode of life, customs and traditions, folklore and literature, artwork and historical past. They go on to chronologically identify the developments and changes of society on the territory of the present-day Bosnian state. The article further analyzes the position of the peoples of Bosnia and Herzegovina within Austria-Hungary comparing their status in society and explains the choice of Bosnian Muslims and Croats as the pillar of the new government. The research produced a number of key findings. The key determinants that formed and helped to preserve Serbian cultural identity through ages are Orthodox Christianity based on St. Sava sacred tradition and the Kosovo myth, a half-historical, halflegendary event that formed the heroic and spiritual code of values and serves as a gospel in preserving Serbian cultural identity. Another feature that produced a significant impact on transforming cultural identity of Bosnian Serbs was conversion to Islam on part of some Bosnians who came to be known as Bošnjaks. Along with Islam and Orthodox Christianity, part of the Serbian population of Bosnia and Herzegovina belonged to the Roman Catholic Church, identified themselves as Croats who spoke Croatian and used Latin script. Thus the indigenous south Slavonic ethnic group of Serbs who had the same historical background and spoke the same language was divided by religion and, partially, the language — the pivotal determinants of identity. The paper demonstrates the joint efforts of the peoples inhabiting the present-day Bosnia and Herzegovina in their struggle against the occupants which were manifested in the activities of Young Bosnia, an organization that aimed at preserving national identity and creating a united Serbian state. The authors conclude that the problem of national and cultural identity crisis of Bosnia and Herzegovina Serbs finds its roots in the historical clash of three civilizations and cultures — south Slavonic, oriental and western. The article identifies the markers of national and cultural identity of Bosnia and Herzegovina Serbs, the disintegration of which led to a crisis.

The novel The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini deals with the cultural crisis of the characters. Migration, hybridity, acculturation, transculturation and diaspora are responsible for cultural crisis. It presents the suffering of a Muslim boy named Amir of Afghanistan who had migrated to USA where he finds alone and lacks his cultural performance. The scattered people of USA have accepted multicultural aspects. When they followed American culture, they lost their original native culture. The long living in the foreign land and distract from the native land and contact with other culture resulted in cultural loss. The compulsion for adjustment and contacts with foreign brings loss of pure native culture. When they feel identity crisis, they try to retrieve the native culture.

Social Control of Women’s Body as Cultural-Political Legitimation in “Putri Cina” Novel

This research aimed to describe the depiction of the female body’s domination as a form of political-cultural legitimacy raised in Sindhunata’s work entitled Putri Cina. Michel Foucault’s theory of discourse was applied as the approach to reveal how sexuality was closely related to power practices. The discourse presented in the novel was dissected by qualitative methods, descriptive qualitative, and interpretative data analysis techniques. The results show that the two main characters of this novel are Chinese women who experienced oppression in Java. The existence of a cultural identity crisis, abjection, passivity, and not subversion represents the figure of alienated women. This perspective is intertwined with how indigenous men perceive Chinese women figures. Sindhunata describes the unequal construction of sexuality between men and women and the discrimination of the Chinese race as repeated during the kingdom era, pre-independence, to the New Order era.

On August 26, 2021, with the support of “Voprosy filosofii” was held a “round table”, the participants of which considered it meaningful and relevant to address the legacy of experiencing and philosophical reflection of critical epochs by peo­ple who have fully endured the “breakdown” of being and an anthropological crisis – for comprehending the disturbing changes taking place in modern soci­ety. In this regard, the intellectual biographies of thinkers who felt a colossal shock in the 1920s and who tried to comprehend their local experience as a global are exceptional. In the authors’ focus are ideas and arguments of the philosophers of the Russian Abroad about the crisis of their contemporary culture (Fedotov – Weidle – Landau – Bicilli). The “round table” is an attempt to correlate their experience with the modern reality of the anthropological crisis. The studying intellectuals underlined the death of culture as the main threat to the life of the social organism. The salvation of culture, first of all, depends on the spiritual efforts of people. From this point of view, philosophy has to com­prehend the principles that make it possible to resist the processes of cultural de­struction. And in this regard, the personality of the philosopher is of exceptional importance, his willingness to live and work “as if history would never end, and at the same time, as if it ended today” (G.P. Fedotov). The philosophy of culture forms the ideal of personal choice as a free submission to universal human goals. The relevance of the intellectual and spiritual search of the “Russian Abroad” thinkers can't be overestimated since this crisis continues today, entering ever new, previously unpredictable phases. The struggle for culture continues. There­fore, the intellectual searches of the "Russian Abroad" thinkers are essential to­day. The core of the discussions was three actual topics in the context of their comprehension by the philosophers: 1. The crisis of religious consciousness; 2. The crisis of scientific rationality; 3. Crisis of cultural identity.

CRISIS OF CULTURAL IDENTITY IN THEATRE IN THE CONTEXT OF MAINSTREAMING OF PERFORMATIVITY AESTHETIC

. Immediacy of the paper is related with strengthening of points of performative aesthetic in culture and art of last two decades. Accordingly to that, authors consider a conflict between two aesthetic paradigms of theatric culture: performative, on the one side, and psychological and realistic, on the other side. The researchers trace a correlation between appearance of a crisis in theatrical culture and transformation of cultural identity. Also, the paper clarifies a concept “cultural identity”, considers manifestations of crisis of cultural identity in theatre, reveals aesthetic values of two paradigms mentioned above, highlights related contradictions, mark perspectives in researching identification process in modern theatre.

A “Europe des Nations”: far right imaginative geographies and the politicization of cultural crisis on Twitter in Western Europe

ABSTRACT Contestation over European integration has been widely studied in the rhetoric of parties, leaders, and movements on the far right in a variety of media. Focusing on Twitter use by far right actors in Western Europe, we apply corpus-aided discourse analysis to explore how imaginative geographies are used to politicize Europe among their digital publics. We find that the idea of a crisis of cultural identity pervades imaginaries of Europe amongst far right digital publics. While Europe is presented as facing a crisis of cultural identity, we find that the far right articulates an aspirational imaginary of Europe, the ‘Europe des Nations’ that rejects liberal-democratic pluralism in the EU and the ‘establishment’. We find that the contestation of Europe in far right digital publics relies on a crisis of cultural identity, representing a translation of Nouvelle Droite imaginaries of Europe into the social media space.

Photography magazines and cross-cultural encounters in postwar Japan, 1945-1955

This article examines cross-cultural encounters between Japanese and western (European and American) photographers in the immediate postwar period (1945-1955), asking how these encounters influenced Japanese photographic trends. In addition, this article considers what photographic representations of western cultures reveal about postwar constructions of Japanese cultural identity. Building upon recent research framed by conceptions of photography as sites of cross-cultural encounter (see Melissa Miles & Kate Warren), this article argues that photography magazines provided space for consistent exchange between western and Japanese photographers through multiple platforms: interviews and round table discussions of photographic trends; articles on and photo series by western photographers; and images by both western and Japanese photographers depicting western cultural material and landscapes, such as photographs of western-style fashions, domestic space, and daily life in European and American cities. Such encounters directly influenced photographic trends in Japan. Features on European nude photographers popularised nude photography as an art form among Japanese photographers, and works contributed by the likes of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, and Robert Doisneau contributed to a rising interest in photographic humanism. Further, these encounters provided a conduit through which photographers and readers encountered western cultural material at a time when Japan underwent a cultural identity crisis brought on by the devastation of defeat and foreign Occupation. In this way, photography magazines simultaneously functioned as spaces that negotiated what exactly “Japanese culture” meant in Japan’s new postwar world.

The effectiveness of a group counseling program to deal with cultural identity crisis among a sample of female adolescents in the Sultanate of Oman: فاعلية برنامج إرشاد جمعي للتعامل مع أزمة الهوية الثقافية لدى عينة من المراهقات في سلطنة عمان

The aim of this study is to build a group counseling program and investigate its effectiveness to deal with the cultural identity crisis among a sample of adolescents in Dahira Province in the Sultanate of Oman. The researcher applied a scale of the cultural identity crisis designed to suit the purpose of selected sample of the study. This scale was applied on the applicants who participated in the counseling program. They were 60 female adolescents from Fatima bint Qais School for Basic Education, particularly from Post Education classes ( 11th and 12th ). The sample was divided randomly into two groups: the experimental group which consisted of 30 adolescents who received a counseling program which was designed to achieve the objectives of the study. The second group is the control group which equally consisted of 30 adolescents who didn't receive any treatment. The study used the group counseling program based on The Logo Therapy of Frankel (1967). This program consisted of 14 counseling sessions implemented during seven weeks with a maximum of two counseling sessions per week and for about 80 minutes for each session. Arithmetic means and standard deviations for all members of experimental and control group were computed for the cultural identity crisis scale and its five dimensions on the pre, post and follow- up measurements. A T- test analysis was used to examine the statistical significance of the differences in degrees of the cultural identity crisis between members of the experimental and control groups. The results of the study showed significant differences at (0.05≥α) in degrees of crisis between experimental and control groups members in both post and follow- up measurement in favor of the experimental group. This confirms the effectiveness of the group counseling program in reducing significantly the cultural identity crisis within members of experimental group. The results also showed significant differences at (0.05≥α) between members of experimental group in both pre and post measurements in favor of the post measurement. In addition, the result showed no significant differences in the degree of the cultural identity crisis among control group members by using both post and follow- up measurements. This demonstrates clearly the effectiveness of the group counseling program in dealing with the cultural identity crisis with adolescents in Oman. Moreover, the result showed significant differences at (0.05≥α) between the degrees the cultural identity crisis of the experimental group members due to their educational level in favor of the 12th grade.

Exploring Socio-cultural Impacts of Ecotourism in the Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal

Ecotourism is supposed to be culturally respectful and an agent to enhance indigenous values, culture and heritage conservation through ethical and responsible approach of development. Acknowledging its potential benefits, developing countries like Nepal have promoted ecotourism as a benign and alternative strategy to attract foreign capital particularly by showing indigenous culture, heritage and environmental resources to the tourists. However, in reality, ecotourism has also demonstrated its short-comings that have caused severe environmental damage and socio-cultural problems. In this regard, by adopting multiple techniques of data collection such as survey with households, interview with key informants, participant observation and archival study, this paper examines the role of ecotourism in the conservation of local culture and heritage, and explores the perceived socio-cultural impacts of ecotourism development in the Annapurna Sanctuary Trail in Annapurna region. Research Findings reveal that ecotourism has induced both positive and negative consequences on the local culture and social life. On one hand, social facilities and infrastructure such as road, school, health post, drinking water, and tele-communication have been improved in the settlements along the trail. On the other hand, local culture, traditions and architectural heritage have been threatened by the tourism development. The key objective of ecotourism i.e. conservation of local heritage and culture, is not fully achieved, however local people perceived significant benefits in terms of conservation of biodiversity and economic benefits. The lack of control on the construction of private buildings, and no specific attention on the vernacular architecture, and local cultural practices has pushed communities towards crisis of cultural identity. It recommends to the relevant stakeholders, specifically the government, for adopting comprehensive policies of ecotourism development particularly to promote cultural heritage conservation and sustainability in the region.
