ANALISIS BERITA HOAKS DI ERA POST-TRUTH: SEBUAH REVIEW

This study aims to provide an initial analysis of how Indonesia in the post-truth era is becoming a world threat. Modern countries such as America and Britain can be ruined by post-truth storms, this is an alarm for the Indonesian people. The potential threats are of course different and in fact seen from the very diverse social situation of Indonesian people (ethnicity, religion, language, culture) the potential threats will be more dangerous if there is no good mitigation. Study literature the researchers use to provide a baseline analysis that occurs, to further deepen based on the current situation through the exploration of information from credible media. The pattern of hoax news dissemination through social media received by the people of Indonesia and the results of surveys from various survey institutions give a clear picture that Indonesia is also not immune to the post-truth tsunami. The main medium of post-truth is alternative media, and post-truth is constrained if media literacy and fact-checking become a culture of community communication.

The Effects of Consumers’ Media Exposure, Attention, and Credibility on Pro-environmental Behaviors

This study investigates the effects of consumers’ media exposure and attention to corporate sustainability communication on their environmental protection behavior intentions and green purchasing behavior intentions as well as the moderating effects of consumers’ perceptions of media credibility. Based on an online survey of 503 participants, the results indicate that media exposure and attention had different effects on consumers’ pro-environmental behavior intentions. The study also reveals that consumers’ perceived media credibility enhanced the relationship between media exposure and environmental protection behavior intentions. Additionally, the results show that the moderating effects were varied depending on media type. The theoretical and practical implications of these findings are addressed.

Voices in health communication — experts and expert-roles in the German news coverage of multi resistant pathogens

When it comes to complex topics in the field of health and risk communication, experts are of high importance for the credibility of a news media report. This paper examines the use of experts and their roles in the news media coverage of multi-resistant pathogens by means of a quantitative content analysis of German print and online news. A cluster analysis of the expert statements identifies three different statement frames describing different expert roles. The results show manifest patterns of selected expert sources, which points to professionalized mechanisms of selecting expert sources for news media reports.

The Effect of Social Media Influencers Featured in Beauty Care Products Advertisements on Purchase Intention among UCSI University Students

This research studies the influence of social media influencers featured in beauty care products advertisements on the purchase intention among UCSI University’s students. By applying Ohanian’s (1990) Source Credibility Theory, it studies the credibility of social media influencers on their expertise, trustworthiness, and attractiveness, and how these factors can influence students’ perception towards social media influencers’ credibility and their purchase intention for beauty care products. Besides, the study also aims to find out whether there is a significant difference between different ethnicities and their perception of the credibility of social media influencers. Questionnaires for the quantitative survey was distributed to 234 students from the Faculty of Social Science and Liberal Arts. Findings show that there is a significant relationship between the credibility of social media influencers, including expertise, trustworthiness, and attractiveness, and the purchase intention for beauty care products among UCSI University students. However, it proves that there is no significant difference between different ethnicities and their perception of the credibility of social media influencers. This research could contribute significantly to the beauty care brand fields where marketers can leverage on the right social media influencers with the traits of expertise, trustworthiness and attractiveness to help them to promote the brand to their audience, and improve the sales.

The Credibility of Traditional and Online Media for the Promotion of Tourism in the Contemporary Tourism Marketing Environment in Durban South Africa

The main purpose of study is to analyse the credibility of traditional and online media for the promotion of tourism in the contemporary tourism marketing environment in Durban South Africa. Explanatory research design was employed and the questionnaire was used to collect the data. The study findings revealed that traditional media and online media are more or less equally competitive for the promotion of tourism. The study also revealed that international visitors have a positive attitude towards online media than traditional media while domestic tourists have a positive attitude towards traditional media than online media. Traditional media was revealed to be highly credible than the general perception of the people and it is a lot more credible than online media. The survival of traditional media is not threatened by online media and traditional media is still working well alongside online media. The study concluded and recommended that tourism marketers and authorities need to come to terms with traditional media and online media coexistence. There is no need to rely on one media to do it all. Where traditional media lacks, online media must be there to make up the difference and enhance the tourist’s experience.

Is Automated Journalistic Writing Less Biased? An Experimental Test of Auto-Written and Human-Written News Stories

ABSTRACT By administering an online experiment, this study examined how source and journalistic domains affect the perceived objectivity, message credibility, medium credibility, bias, and overall journalistic quality of news stories among an adult sample (N = 370) recruited using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk) service. Within the framework of the cognitive authority theory, the study found auto-written news stories were rated as more objective, credible (both message and medium credibility), and less biased. However, significant difference was found between a combined assessment condition (news stories with source and author information) and a message only assessment condition (news stories without source and author information) in the ratings of objectivity and credibility, but not bias. Moreover, significant differences were found in the objectivity and credibility ratings of auto-written and human-written news stories in the journalistic domains of politics, finance and sports news stories. In auto-written news stories, sports news stories were rated more objective and credible, while financial news stories were rated as more biased. In human-written stories, financial news stories were rated as more objective and credible. However, political news stories were rated as more biased among human-written news stories, and in cases where auto-written and human-written stories were combined.

When more likes is not better: the consequences of high and low likes-to-followers ratios for perceived account credibility and social media marketing effectiveness

Previous research on social media marketing assumes that the more followers or “likes” an individual or company has on social media, the better. The current research is the first that challenges this assumption by showing that people make inferences about the credibility of social media accounts based on the number of likes a post receives relative to the size of its likely audience. The findings indicate that high as well as low likes-to-followers ratios negatively influence the perceived credibility of the account and, as such, dampen social media marketing effectiveness. The addition of hashtags is identified as a way to guard against the negative impact of high likes-to-followers ratios. Managers, (aspiring) influencers, and people in general involved in (personal) branding on social media can use the present findings to maximize the effectiveness of their social media marketing strategy.

Assessing Online Viewing Practices among College Students

This article focuses on media literacy education for college students. First, we conducted psychometric analyses to verify the properties of the Critical Evaluation and Analysis of Media (CEAM) scale. CEAM measures college students’ self-reported practices for critically evaluating and analyzing the credibility, audience, and technical design elements of online media, such as news, advertisement, and entertainment media. Using CEAM, our second goal was to identify trends in critical viewing practices among first-year students enrolled in college. Results of confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and item response theory (IRT) supported a three-factor structure for the CEAM scale. Composite score reliability for all items comprising the total scale displayed strong evidence for the internal consistency of the scale with a Coefficient Alpha (α) of .91. Score reliability estimates for each subscale follow: (a) Questioning Credibility (α = .80), (b) Recognizing Audience (α = .78), and (c) Recognizing Design (α = .81). Findings from the study indicate that while first-year college students generally perceive they have adequate practices in recognizing audience in media messages and questioning the credibility of news, there is room for improvement in questioning the credibility of advertisements, suggesting that college instructors should focus more on advertising literacy.

Brand disclosure and source partiality affect native advertising recognition and media credibility

This study explores how textual characteristics of native advertising affected audiences’ advertising recognition and perceived message credibility and media channel credibility. Findings show that repeated mentioning of brand names increased audiences’ advertising recognition but did not affect perceived message credibility or media credibility. Using sponsor-affiliated sources increased audiences’ advertising recognition but decreased perceived message credibility and media credibility. The study recommends frequent and early sponsorship disclosure and cautions against using sponsor-affiliated sources in native advertising.

Media credibility

Abstract Media credibility, as a construct that has been mainly developed in the western context, hasn’t been examined thoroughly and tested in Asia cultural and social context. This research discusses and verifies media credibility as a multi-dimensional construct, with the support of empirical data. It discusses the impact of privately-owned news websites, e.g. Sina, on state-owned television stations, e.g. CCTV, with a focus on media credibility in the context of China. The data supports that media credibility includes both professional and political dimensions. The dimension of political orientation is a unique one developed directly in the context of China with empirical data support. This paper also explores contributing factors that impact media credibility in the Chinese context, and finds positive impact of privately-owned website use on media credibility of state-owned television.

That is no longer conducted by professional journalists but by ordinary citizens. This writing focus on how the opportunities of new media and its challenges in people journalism and political agenda which using as fact news disseminators (hoax) and source run of black campaign content at both the national and regional political. The Habermas theory of public space where used to seeing new media become more crowded with various, opinion, news and of commentaries about politics. As in the case of seword.com, the news portal site was by a group of unknown writter its non credibility media worker. The use of social media by Bunni Yani who spread a message provocative and SARA in a contestation, political or agenda in the region hoax and black campaign. On the context of contestation or political agenda in the region, hoax and black campaign can break up nation’s unity at the regional level. Even the phenomenon in Jakarta Local Election perceived have influenced political stability and life state in general in Indonesia. In which front new media uses and journalism that they have to more support by participation political public that puts forward ethics journalistic, to unite wholeness the people and the country, instead of divided.

The dichotomy of China Global Television Network’s news coverage

Although much is made of the universalisation of ‘US-style’ journalism around the world and Chinese journalists’ shared professional values with counterparts in liberal-democratic countries (Zhang, 2009), the effect of these trends on journalism in China is yet to be fully explored. Using the 2015 Tianjin blasts as a case study, this article investigates China Global Television Network (CGTN) and CNN International’s coverage of the disaster. The empirical study finds that despite their overlapping news values, the two networks’ opposing ideological objectives contributed to different framings of the Tianjin blasts. Although CGTN, as a symbol of Chinese media’s presence on the world stage, has clearly travelled far from its past era of party-line journalism, it still hesitates to apportion responsibility to those in power. The authors argue that CGTN is increasingly torn by its dichotomous role as a credible media competing for audience attention on the world stage, and a vital government propaganda organ domestically.

E-commerce Advertising: Does the Traditional Advertising Elements Still Relevant?

The substantial growth of beauty products’ demand from both domestic and export markets has made beauty product become one of the important sectors of economy in Malaysia. On top of continuously introducing new beauty product to the marketplace, advertising of new beauty products is another important mechanize to ensure new product success in the competitive business environment. Recently, e-commerce of beauty product is emerging rapidly in the local marketplace. E-commerce serves as the platform for both online advertising (or namely e-commerce advertising) and online purchase. In addition, the success of e-commerce (which commonly measure in term of customers purchase intention) is very much dependent on the elements of e-commerce advertising. As such the aim for this study is to assess does the traditional advertising elements still stay relevant to e-commerce advertising of beauty product. In conjunction with this, the study explores the relationship between e-commerce advertising elements (which are medium credibility, entertaining celebrities association, quality features of product, advertising frequency, brand image and informativeness) and consumers’ online purchase intention of beauty products in Malaysia. The study is quantitative based, data was collected from 260 females between age of 18 to 25 years. Preliminary data analysis was done to assess the normality and reliability of the data, followed by analysis of correlation via Pearson correlation test. Analysis result from Person correlation suggested within the scope of the population under study, three traditional advertising elements still stay relevant to e-commerce advertising of beauty product, which are brand image, quality features of the product and informativeness of advertising.

“Crimea Project” of a Jewish Autonomy in the USA Liberal Public Perception (Based on The New York Times Materials)

Introduction. “Crimea project” is unsuccessful attempts to create a Jewish national territorial autonomy on the territory of the Crimean Peninsula in 1920–1940s of the 20th century. The topic was poorly elaborated in historiography. In this regard, this topic frequently became the ground for historical myths and pseudo-scientific statements. The main aim of this paper is to analyse the “Crimea project” coverage in American media in 1920–1940s of the 20th century and to identify the patterns in topic presentations. Methods. In this paper, we used such methods as analysis, synthesis, retrospective analysis, the historical genetic method, historical comparative, and the analysis of text. We selected The New York Times newspaper as the main source as it is one of the oldest, continuous and credible media reflecting liberal agenda. Analysis. In the paper, we analyze articles devoted to “Crimea project” during 20–40s of the 20th century. This article examines about 30 articles devoted to the Jewish agrarization, the project of creating a Jewish national autonomy in Crimea, the anti-Semitism problem in the USSR. This publications are examined in the context of struggle between zionists and anti-zionists in the USA as well. Results. Most articles focuse on the social aspect, namely agrarization. The political moments of “Crimea project” are addressed less frequently, mainly in the frame of the statements of Soviet officials on the possibility of creating a Jewish autonomy on the territory of the Steppe Ukraine and Northern Crimea. The paper pays attention to the authors’ little knowledge on the real situation and mistakes in its coverage.

Facebook Communication and Marketing Influence on Decision-Making and Choice of University Student Representatives: A Student’s Perspective

Facebook has become the main platform for young adults to sustain their social presence as well as expand their social networks. The impact of social media on youth decision-making has attracted much attention in research and academia. The research setting was at University of Fort Hare, a university located in South Africa. Before and during a student representative council (SRC) election at the university, the six student parties contesting for the leadership office utilised Facebook in communicating and marketing their campaign messages to fellow students. This research therefore empirically investigated how Facebook influenced university students’ intention to vote and elect an SRC for the institution. The survey methodology was adopted in collecting data and non-probability sampling, a form of convenience sampling was utilised in selection of suitable participants for the study. A total of 381 students participated in the study responding to questions examining potential drivers of selection of a particular student representative party (SRP). A conceptual model was developed with Facebook constructs that included “medium credibility of Facebook”, “peer communication on Facebook” and “user trust of Facebook” among other factors that influence students’ choice of an (SRP). The main findings established that identification with peers was observed as having the most significant impact on youths’ intention to vote for student representatives. Message credibility was found to have weak impact on student’s intention to vote for a particular (SRC) candidate. Implications emerged from the findings and further research suggestions were provided.

What Debunking of Misinformation Does and Doesn't.

A web-based experiment (n = 960) examined how debunking of publicly shared news on social media affects viewers' attitudes toward the source who shared the fake news, their agreement with the news position, and perceived credibility of social media as a news platform. Exposure to debunking information did not lower participants' agreement with the news position, but led them to derogate (1) the source who shared the misinformation and (2) social media as a news platform. However, participants who initially favored the source were less likely to attribute the sharing of fake news to the source's dispositions, rather than situational factors, thereby maintaining their positive attitudes toward the source.

Photographic manipulation and journalistic media credibility through photography

This paper aims to determine how photographic manipulation relates to the credibility of journalistic media through the photograph published in Los Angeles Times referred to the Second Gulf War, 2003. This research has a non-experimental crosscutting design, applicative type with descriptive, correlational and comparative levels, as well as inductive, deductive, analytical, statistical, and hermeneutic method. By units of analysis and population samples (taken from students in Lima and New York City) the general hypothesis, where photographic manipulation is significantly related to the credibility of journalistic media through the photograph published in Los Angeles Times referred to the Second Gulf War in 2003, was confirmed.

지진 뉴스에 대한 제3자 효과 : 사회적 거리 가설의 재검토와 제3자 효과에 대한 언론 신뢰도 및 위험 인식의 역할

제3자 효과는 대표적인 미디어 효과 이론으로 다양한 맥락에서 많은 실증 연구가 진행되었지만, 이론적으로 정제되지 못했다는 지적을 받아 왔다. 본 연구는 제3자 효과의 이론적 논의 가운데 논란이 되고 있는 세 가지 측면을 지진 위험 보도 맥락에서 다루었다. 1) 제3자 지각의 ‘제3자’ 유형에 따른 사회적 거리 대 타깃 결과 가설을 검증하였다. 2) 제3자 지각이라는 지각적 편향을 줄이는 요인으로서 언론 신뢰도와 위험 인식의 역할을 규명하였다. 3) 행동적 요소로서 지진 대비 행동 의도와 제3자 지각과의 관계를 규명하되, 예측 요인을 포괄적으로 검토하였다. 2017년 11월 포항 지진 직후 지진 지역 거주자와 비거주자를 대상으로 실시한 온라인 설문 자료를 분석한 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 지진 위험 뉴스가 자신보다 타자에게 더 영향이 크다는 제3자 지각은 견고하게 나타났지만, 사회적 거리 결과보다 타깃 결과 가설이 더 지지되는 것으로 나타났다. 2) 언론 신뢰도와 위험 인식이 높아질수록 제3자 지각은 작게 나타났다. 3) 지진 위험 대비 의도는 제3자 지각(특히 지진 피해 지역 주민이 타자인 경우)과는 부정적 관계를, 언론 신뢰도 및 위험 인식과는 긍정적인 관계를 나타냈다. 본 연구 결과는 제3자 효과의 이론적 논의를 더욱 풍부하게 하며, 위험 이슈로서 새롭게 부상한 지진 위험에 대한 공중의 인식과 반응을 파악하는 데 기여할 수 있다.

Media Credibility and the Base Rate Fallacy

The base rate fallacy describes how people rely on exemplars more than on base rates, when making judgments about a population. We provide a test of the base rate fallacy, considering the critiques of the research on the base rate fallacy on theoretical grounds. It is proposed that while trustworthy media outlets will allow readers to believe in anecdotal evidence found in news stories, readers will rely instead on base rates when presented with less trusted sources. Findings indicate that media credibility moderates the use of exemplars, although only among those with high trust in mass media.
