Differentiated transformational leadership, conflict and team creativity: an experimental study in China

PurposeThe authors investigated the impacts of differentiated transformational leadership (TFL), including team-focused TFL and individual-focused TFL, on team creativity through the mediating effect of team conflict, consisting of task conflict and relationship conflict.Design/methodology/approachThe authors designed and conducted a close-to-reality experiment, enrolling 180 students and six professors from a large Chinese university. Student participants worked on a real marketing project and professor participants imitated the behaviors of transformational leaders. Using the computed values of team-focused TFL, individual-focused TFL, team creativity, task conflict and relationship conflict, the authors assessed the relationship among differentiated TFL, team creativity and team conflict.FindingsTeam-focused TFL has a significantly positive impact on team creativity through the mediating effect of task conflict, whereas individual-focused TFL has a significantly negative impact on team creativity through the mediating effect of relationship conflict.Originality/valueFrom a new perspective of team conflict, the authors revealed the “black box” of the differentiated TFL–team creativity relationship. Moreover, other determinants were well controlled in the experiment, and thus, the authors effectively clarified the intervening mechanism of differentiated TFL on team creativity through the mediating effect of team conflict.

Perceived Overqualification, Emotional Exhaustion, and Creativity: A Moderated-Mediation Model Based on Effort-Reward Imbalance Theory.

Overqualification is prevalent in times of economic downturn, and research has increasingly focused on its outcomes. This study aimed to explore the psychological burden caused by perceived overqualification (POQ) and its impact on creativity among high-tech enterprise employees. Drawing from effort–reward imbalance theory, we examined the effect of POQ on emotional exhaustion, along with the mediating role of emotional exhaustion in the POQ–creativity relationship and the moderating role of pay for performance (PFP) in strengthening the link between POQ and emotional exhaustion. Using cross-sectional data from a sample of 359 employees in China, we found that (1) POQ was positively related to emotional exhaustion; (2) emotional exhaustion was negatively related to creativity; (3) PFP moderated the effect of POQ on emotional exhaustion as well as the indirect effect of POQ on creativity via emotional exhaustion. These findings have both theoretical and practical implications.

Leader–member exchange mediates the relationship between workplace fun and employee creativity

Although previous researchers have explored positive outcomes of workplace fun, the workplace fun–employee creativity relationship has received little attention. We investigated the link between workplace fun and employee creativity, and the mediating effect of leader–member exchange (LMX) on this relationship. Participants comprised 226 subordinates and 45 supervisors from Chinese stateowned companies. We employed structural equation modeling analysis to examine the hypotheses. Results show that workplace fun did not have a significant direct relationship with employee creativity. However, LMX fully mediated the workplace fun–employee creativity link. These results suggest that, to promote employee creativity, organizations should create a fun work environment in which employees can develop high-quality LMX.

ONLINE LEARNING IN THE SYSTEM OF SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS

The article discusses some of the features of online learning in the system of studying social responsibility. A new understanding of the main pedagogical categories is being clarified - educational activity, learning environment, educational tasks in the conditions of modern technologized education. A scientific and theoretical review of the literature showed the versatility of studying the problem of social responsibility in various fields of sciences: philosophy (Platon, Aristotle, T. Hobbes, J. Locke, I. Kant, etc.), jurisprudence (A.R. Kornilov, A.R. Lavrent'ev, S.N. Kozhevnikov and others), psychology of personality development (S.L. Serebryakova, L.M. Arkhangelsky, A.A. Guseinov and others), pedagogy (I.Yu. Novichkova, S.P. Akunina, V.N. Lukin and others). Several scientific works on corporate social responsibility contributed to the development of this study (F. Rosati, R. Costa, A. Calabrese, J. Lee, M. Cho, etc.). The work of foreign scientists (S.L. Davis, L.M. Rives, S. Ruiz-de-Maya) "Personal social responsibility: developing and testing the scale" is of scientific and methodological value, which determines the need to develop a concept of social responsibility, which includes the individual human behavior of a person as a modern the citizen as a whole. The results of studies by J.C.R. Sousa, E.S. Siqueira, E. Binotto, L.H.N. Nobre on the perception of subjects of the educational process of universities of social responsibility, depending on the degree of discussion and the level of socialization of students, are significant. According to C. Roofe, the problem of social responsibility is not given special attention, which leads to a constant decline in the moral and spiritual component of education in the country. The diagnostic tool was a questionnaire to identify the personal attitude of teachers to the problem of social responsibility of students and the quality of work to develop the desired personality characteristics at the university. The author's questionnaire "Ideas of social responsibility" has passed the validation confirmation procedure (Alpha-Cronbach: 660927 and Standards. Alpha: 669767) by specialists of the Biostatistics sector of the Research Management Department of WKMU named after Marat Ospanov. The result of the research is the highlighted relationship of creativity with the formed cultural and social experience of the individual, which is the basis of socially responsible behavior. Highlighted as a result of observation as an initial method of empirical cognition, psychological, pedagogical, methodological features of online education will allow teachers and students to timely adjust their activities in order to achieve their goals in the system of studying students' social responsibility.

The Relationship of CSR and Employee Creativity in the Hotel Sector: The Mediating Role of Job Autonomy

Despite the growing surge in the literature about employee creativity, the mainstream literature largely views it from an organizational perspective, and ignores the underlying mechanism that motivates employees to be engaged in different creative tasks. Against this backdrop, the current work was carried out to explore the relationship of corporate social responsibility (CSR) and employee creativity with the mediating effect of autonomy to explain the motivational pull for employee creativity. The data were collected from the employees of the hotel sector of Pakistan through a self-administered questionnaire (n = 511) and were analyzed by employing the structural equation modeling (SEM) technique. The results revealed that CSR, through the mediating effect of job autonomy, influences employees’ creativity significantly. The findings of the current analysis will help both academia and professionals from the hotel sector to understand the importance of CSR as a booster for employee creativity. Furthermore, the potential role of job autonomy as a mediator in explaining this relationship will also help policymakers to understand the importance of freedom at the workplace to engage the workforce in different extra-roles, including creativity.

Relationship of creativity in the activities of a teacher with the efficiency of learning activities of students

The importance of creativity in education is now widely recognized as an essential skill of the 21st century. This article examines the relationship of teachers ‘creativity with the style of pedagogical communication and the effectiveness of students’ learning activities. The study involved 28 teachers (including 6 men and 22 women aged 32-60 years) and 78 students, whose classes were taught by these teachers. Research methods: method of determining personal creativity E. E. Tunic; method for determining social creativity (level of creative potential) E. E. Tunic; test questionnaire “Style of pedagogical activity” А. М. Markova and A. Ya. Nikonova, analysis of documents documenting the success of their educational activities, elements of pedagogical monitoring. It was revealed that the parameters that determine the creative characteristics of the personality of teachers and their individual teaching styles are in a significant relationship. The expressiveness of the emotional-improvisational and emotional-methodological styles of teaching contributes to the manifestation of the teacher’s creative abilities, and the orientation towards the reasoning-methodological style, on the contrary, prevents the realization of these qualities. Students in whom the majority of teachers demonstrate a creative approach in pedagogical activity show higher educational results and involvement in the educational process.

How to make use of team knowledge variety? The role of power disparity

PurposeBased on the social dominance theory, this study aims to theorize the moderating effect of power disparity in the impact of team knowledge variety on team creativity and further to verify team open communication as the mediating mechanism of the aforementioned interactive effect.Design/methodology/approachThe multisource (team members and their team leaders) and longitudinal (separated by four months) survey data were collected from 67 research and development teams in China to test the research model. The authors used multiple regression analyses to validate all the proposed hypotheses.FindingsResults reveal that team knowledge variety has a more positive impact on team creativity when teams have lower power disparity. Besides, team open communication is significantly and positively related to team creativity and mediates the interactive effect of team knowledge variety and team power disparity on team creativity.Originality/valueThis study reconciles the mixed findings in the previous study and provides new insights regarding the functionality of team knowledge variety. By identifying team power disparity as a moderator in shaping the effects of team knowledge variety, the authors extend the research that explores the moderators of the team knowledge variety–team creativity relationship, and make comprehensive consideration of the coexistence of multiple diversities within teams (i.e. knowledge variety and power disparity) and their joint effects on team creativity. Besides, this research identifies team open communication as an important underlying mechanism in transmitting the interactive effects of two different types of diversities on team creativity, thus offering new insights on how teams can perform creatively.

Family as a national archetype of forming aristocratic personality: relationship between Lesia Ukrainka and Mykhailo Drahomanov.

The phenomenon of the Kosach-Dragomanov family is considered in this article as a national archetype of the Ukrainian mentality, the influence of this family on the formation of such an aristocratic personality as Lesіa Ukrainka during difficult times of socio-political life. Special attention has been paid to the creative and human relationships between Lesia and her uncle Mykhailo Drahomanov whose influence on her was undeniable and extremely beneficial. Her pedigree in particular has been traced. Heredity of generations, the appearance of ingenious personalities is always the subject of special attention. The decisive moment in defining these processes is the appearance of new people, more precisely people of new formation, people of progressive thinking, who are the driving force and foundation of historical change. New generations should not be indifferent to their great predecessors. Lesіa Ukrainka as a creative nature could not be indifferent to the talents and skills of talented people, the circle of her friends, acquaintances and supporters was extremely wide as well as the measurement of her interests. The subject of this article is to highlight the important role of the family and the environment in general in forming a young person as a personality. The challenges of the modern times, in particular, in the field of humanistic educational tendencies, require an appeal to moral authorities in the history of the development of the Ukrainian nation. Leader positive humor and employee creativity: The mediating role of work engagement

Leader humor plays an important role in organizations because it affects employees' attitude and behavior. The positive effect of humor in organizations has been widely touted; however, research on the effect of leader humor on employee creativity is still rare. This study addressed how leader positive humor affects employee creativity and whether work engagement mediates this relationship. Data were collected from 233 supervisor–subordinate dyads in 23 Chinese hightech companies. Results of structural equation modeling indicate that leader positive humor was positively related to work engagement, and that work engagement was positively related to employee creativity. Additionally, work engagement mediated the relationship between leader positive humor and employee creativity. Thus, organizations should encourage managers to use positive humor to enhance employees' engagement at work, which will, in turn, lead to creative outcomes. This research extends understanding of the leader positive humor–employee creativity relationship.

Relationships of Motivational Orientation and Creativity and Their Effects on Writing Performance

Motivational orientation and creativity of students in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing courses have recently garnered increased attention in South Korea and around the world. In an effort to advance research in these areas, this study examined relationships involving motivational orientation (intrinsic goal orientation and self-efficacy), creativity, and writing performance. A group of university EFL students (n = 41) in South Korea participated in this study. They were asked to complete questionnaires of intrinsic goal orientation and self-efficacy, take the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking, and complete a series of writing tasks including a persuasive essay as part of their performance assessment of a writing class, which served as the context of this study. Results showed no significant relationship between motivational orientation and creativity. However, an interaction effect between intrinsic goal orientation and self-efficacy on student writing performance was found. Results are discussed and recommendations are made based on pedagogical implications of these findings.

The Emmaus narrative and contemporary Christian followership – An empirical case study

This article aims to explore a ‘lived discipleship’ by determining whether and how contemporary communities of faith could implement the norms and principles reflected in the Emmaus narrative of Luke 24:13–35 within a plausible epistemological framework that might facilitate a fresh understanding of Christian followership as discipleship. This was done through an empirical case study using two focus groups as co-researchers, in order to actively listen to their respective understandings of lived theology in their unique South African contexts. The two focus groups consisted of (1) a contemporary Christian grouping of Afrikaans-speaking, active churchgoers situated in Hazeldean, a suburb in Pretoria East, Tshwane, Gauteng and (2) a contemporary Christian grouping of African, active churchgoers situated in Ivory Park, a suburb in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng. This article concluded that Luke 24:13–35 nudged the co-researchers to re-evaluate their contemporary understanding of discipleship and moved them to additional and new perspectives in terms of practical expressions thereof that can be best described as ‘lived followership’. A shift from perceiving Jesus in terms of an ‘act to follow’ by gaining the correct knowledge, to following Jesus as ‘a performative act’, a shift from ‘theoretical knowledge’ to ‘heart knowledge’.Contribution: This article is a part of the Festschrift for Prof. Stephan Joubert. This article plays into similar creative interdisciplinary relationship as seen in the work of Prof. Joubert, by looking at the relationship between New Testament and Practical Theology in order to improve practices of faith that is rooted in a biblical understanding of Jesus.

“Even here your uncle has been of use to you!” On the history of creative relationships of Fyodor Dostoevsky and Ivan Goncharov

The article is devoted to the study of literary and biographical connections between the collision of Ivan Goncharov's first novel “A Common Story” and the conflict between Fyodor Dostoevsky and his guardian Pyotr Karepin. Analysing biographical materials, the author hypothesises that Fyodor Dostoevsky, meeting with Ivan Goncharov, while the latter was working on “A Common Story”, could partly influence the creation of the main collision and central images of the novel. Noting the plot and figurative convergence, the author of the article also shows the ideological difference between Ivan Goncharov and Fyodor Dostoevsky in the presentation of the conflict between uncle and nephew – two different minds, worldviews and representatives of two different generations. The author of the work presents significant and interesting correspondences between the life and creative paths of Ivan Goncharov and Fyodor Dostoevsky, noting the similar literary influences experienced by both writers, and also points to salons and literary circles where they could meet.

Today, economic sustainability is a social priority and it implies positive, rewarding, and creative relationships in the workplace. Creativity, innovation, and subjective welfare will remain extremely important for sustainable production models in an age of technological acceleration, ecological threats, and digital globalization. With the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the new ways to organize work, this is even more important. The basis for this is to be found in education, especially in secondary and higher education. Good mentoring is becoming essential in professional development; this activity is based on words and silence, using corporate and individual coaching tools to open new doors of creativity. Following Peter Drucker’s (1954) work in management thinking and the approach of positive psychologists, this paper presents a new concept of sustainable working relationships for the 21st century based on words and narratives.

Making Sense of Indigenous ⬄ Colonial Encounters: New Zealand’s Treaty of Waitangi in a Digital Age

This article explores how we interpret, write history, and make sense in a digital age. The study takes place at the intersection of three disciplines: Media and Communication Studies, Postcolonial Theory, and Law. This exploration is conducted in and through an examination of attempts to make sense of “official,” “legal” documents” that emerged out of indigenous ⬄ colonial encounters during the 19th century in New Zealand. Subsequently, this paper focuses on McKenzie’s seminal study of the New Zealand’s Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and Jones and Hoskins’ study of The Second New Zealand Land Deed. These two studies are then interfaced with and considered in light of a recent governmental review of New Zealand’s ICT sector, infrastructure and markets. Here, the focus is on Regulating communications for the future: Review of the Telecommunications Act 2001, and the Telecommunications (New Regulatory Framework) Amendment Bill. This article finds that in a digital age—a world of deep fakes and total manipulability of mediated or recorded space—the hermeneut is required to enter and negotiate a (constrained) creative relationship: as an artisan, architect, or artist, with an interpretative context and/or medium.

Artistic Communication in the Modern Exhibition Space of Siberia

The article reveals the challenges of artistic communication in the organisation of modern exhibition space. Art exhibitions demonstrate the synthesis of creative practices implemented with the use of a wide range of expositional forms and means of expression. The paper studies the features of the implementation of artistic communication in the exhibition space and analyses theoretical foundations of communication tasks, which are taken into account when organising the exhibition space. Based on contemporary acting exhibition projects, including regional exhibitions (Az. Art. Siberia – 2019), the authors of the article reveal the specific features of artistic communication, concluding that representation of works of art is implementation of the intellectual and creative relationship of the author and the recipient in broadcasting artistic information containing a certain attitude to the world, which forms the conceptual content of art and its value content

Is Negative Group Affective Tone Always Bad For Team Creativity? Team Trait Learning Goal Orientation as the Boundary Condition

Although previous studies have found that positive group affective tone is generally good for team creativity, the reported effects of negative group affective tone (NGAT) are mixed. Drawing on the team goal orientation composition literature, we propose that team trait learning goal orientation (TTLGO; aggregated level of team members’ trait learning goal orientation) will moderate the relationship between NGAT and team creativity. Specifically, NGAT will be positively related to team creativity when TTLGO is high but becomes negative when TTLGO is low. We further theorize that team information exchange accounts for this moderating effect. Employing a multiple-source and time-lag design, we conducted two studies to test the hypotheses. In Study 1, we collected data from 270 information technology engineers working in 62 R&amp;D teams in a software development company and examined the moderating effect of TTLGO on the NGAT-team creativity relationship. In Study 2, we replicated the findings of Study 1 and further tested the mediating role of team information exchange (i.e., Hypothesis 2) using data from 237 members of 43 diversified teams (e.g., R&amp;D, advertising and marketing, technical services, and quality improvement). The results of these two studies support our hypotheses. Theoretical and practical implications for group affect and creativity literature are further discussed.

Creative expressiveness in childhood writing predicts educational achievement beyond motivation and intelligence: A longitudinal, genetically informed study.

Creativity is linked with educationally relevant constructs such as achievement, intelligence, and motivation. However, very few studies have explored longitudinal links between the constructs or the aetiology of individual differences in childhood creativity. The study addresses the gap in the literature of developmental studies on the relationship of creativity with other educationally relevant measures. Additionally, the present study is the first adequately powered genetically informative analysis of childhood creativity. The present study utilized data from 1,306 twins, a subsample from a longitudinal, representative twin sample in the UK. Creativity was operationalised as a Creative Expressiveness score, using the Consensual Assessment Technique on stories written by 9-year-olds. Intelligence and writing motivation were assessed at age 9. Academic achievement was collected at ages 9, 12, and 16. Creative Expressiveness was associated with intelligence and motivation, all measured at age 9. It also predicted variance in English grades at ages 9 and 16. The associations were weak, but significant, over and above intelligence, motivation, and earlier English grades. The variance in Creative Expressiveness was explained by genetic (35%), shared environmental (21%), and non-shared environmental (45%) influences. The phenotypic correlations with other study variables were mainly mediated genetically. The results provide information that can be used for planning educational content. First, creativity can be detected in childhood writing. Second, childhood creativity may be overlooked in early educational assessments. Third, the results from the genetic analyses are important indications on the role of environments in the development of creativity.
