DIY academic archiving: mischievous disruptions of a new counter-movement

Against increasing injunctions in research governance to create open data, and knee-jerk rejections from qualitative researchers in response to such efforts, we explore a radical counter movement of academics engaged in what we term “DIY Academic Archiving,” the creation of open and accessible archives of their research materials. We turn to interviews with three DIY academic archivists, each drawing on an ethos of community archiving, as opposed to emerging open data schemes: Melissa Munn on The Gaucher/Munn Penal Press Collection,1 Eric Gonzaba’s Wearing Gay History,2 and Michael Goodman’s Victorian Illustrated Shakespeare Archive.3 We see these archives as engaged in a “politics of refusal,” which challenges both conventional methods and ethics in qualitative research as well as new moves toward open data. On the one hand, academics are tasked to “protect” their data by destroying it, under the guise of a supposed mode of “care.” On the other hand, open data makes quite contrary demands, to care for data by making it “open” for further extraction through (re)use. DIY Academic Archiving is a practice of refusal that supports a redirection away from this binary. In this article, we explore how DIY academic archivists play with coding as a form of mischievous disruption, and so are contributing to new data imaginaries. We offer insight into how DIY Academic Archiving supports researchers in their theoretical, methodological and political commitments, and at the same time, how it can enable researchers to take the care-full risk of archiving our research data.

Archives, prisons and person-centred historical praxis: doing social history research on incarceration in colonial Africa

Bringing together methods and perspectives from critical archive studies, African history, social history and critical prison studies, this article considers the opportunities, challenges and ethical considerations that arise when doing social history research on colonial African prisons using official archives. We argue that while such records can provide valuable information, engagement with these documents needs to be grounded in recognition of their ‘person-ness’. This involves acknowledging the power dynamics and coercion that shaped the creation and content of official archives, prioritising the experiences of incarcerated people, and using the records in a way that recognises the limits of consent in terms of their origins and use. By turning to a person-centred historical praxis, researchers can not only play a key role in furthering our knowledge of colonial carceral systems but can also help to challenge these systems and their afterlives.

Archival Silences and Avenues to Address Them: A Literature Review

ABSTRACT Why do certain groups lack scholarship representing their histories? My curiosity led me to archives and then to archival silences. Thematically organized, this literature review on archival silences begins by identifying and characterizing archival silences. Defining characteristics include that archival power influences the creation of archival silences, archival silences are inevitable, and these silences impact, though not exclusively, marginalized communities. From a working understanding and definition, section two provides a general starting point with which to address archival silences, including identification, adjustment of archival practices and community inclusion, and creation of alternative archives. The article concludes by offering avenues for further study based on the literature review's limitations.

Digital enhancement and photogrammetric recording of La Joquera Levantine rock art (Borriol, Castelló)

The heritage values of Levantine rock art, as UNESCO World Heritage since 1998 and as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1985 according to the Spanish Heritage Act, together with its fragile nature, demand developing initiatives aimed at regularly revisiting and monitoring the sites and updating any existing records (descriptions, tracings, photographs, etc.). This is especially important for long-known sites, such as La Joquera, discovered and first graphically recorded in 1930 and for which these records have not been updated for decades. Such revisits should be aimed to: a) asses the integrity of the finds since their discovery or since the last revision; b) test whether current digital technologies can improve previous interpretations and reproductions of the art preserved there; and c) produce accurate three-dimensional (3D) photorealistic models that capture the 3D nature of this heritage and even improve the visualisation of motifs. These integral approaches are relevant to the qualitative and quantitative study of the art, as well as to its preservation and monitoring, and creation of digital archives to ensure a virtual future for Levantine art. This paper reports the technologies and methods used, the challenges faced (in terms of space available, lighting restrictions and the visual interference caused by the protective fence), and the results obtained at La Joquera rock art site as part of the 2D and 3D digital recording of the rock surface, the colour and the motifs depicted. Highlights of this paper include the identification of previously invisible weaponry and adornments of the only archer preserved on this site, as well as some other incomplete remains. Deliverables also include the production of a photorealistic model on which colour-intensified tracings are projected. This facilitates the identification of art that is now extremely faded and offers a closer look at what the site may have looked like originally.

Application of an innovative approach to the organization of the educational process in higher education and training of applicants 073 and 281 specialties in the conditions of distance education

The study proved and substantiated the importance of innovative approaches and digitalization in the organization of the educational process of higher education. It has been found that the introduction of innovative approaches is a strategically key factor for achieving a high level of quality and efficiency of educational services. In particular, innovative technologies and digitalization allow universities to adapt to modern requirements and create flexible and accessible learning environments. 
 During the study, an analysis of differences in the interpretation of the concepts of «threat» and «risk» was conducted. In particular, it is determined that in education threats and risks can include not only financial difficulties, but also loss of reputation, low quality of education and insufficient competitiveness of graduates. It identifies the main range of problematic issues, sets of innovative approaches in higher education and highlights the principles and stages of diagnosis, which should take into account the specifics of the educational environment and the requirements of the modern labor market for its qualitative assessment. 
 In order to test the research, the article assesses and analyzes the introduction of innovative approaches in the Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University for the training of applicants 073 and 281 in the field of distance education. The strategic goals chosen to accelerate the digitalization process have been singled out and justified, considering the high standards of quality and the needs of the modern educational environment. The introduction of a digital student card, the creation of a digital educational environment and an increase in the level of digital literacy of students and teaching staff are key areas of the strategy of the Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University. In addition, innovative approaches have been developed, such as partnerships with technology companies, the creation of electronic libraries and archives aimed at supporting research activities and quality education in distance learning. 
 It provides a SWOT analysis of the Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University which highlights the main strengths and weaknesses of its functioning, as well as identifies the opportunities and threats faced by the university today in the most difficult conditions of existence. The conducted analysis allows us to draw conclusions and determine the prospects for further research in this direction. 
 In general, the study emphasizes the importance of innovation and digitalization in education as strategic factors contributing to improving the quality, efficiency, and competitiveness of educational institutions in the modern world. 
 The obtained results help to determine the optimal way to achieve the set goals, and their certification with certificates testifies to the importance and effectiveness of the chosen direction of innovative activity at Volodymyr Dahl East Ukrainian National University in the face of high requirements for remote educational process.

Manajemen Arsip Dinamis di Sekretariat Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Daerah (DPRD) Kota Binjai

This research was conducted at the Secretariat of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD Kota Binjai). The purpose of this research is to find out about how archives are created, used and maintained as well as dynamic archive management constraints so that they can be used according to their functions in the Binjai City DPRD. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. This study intends to reveal the phenomena that exist in the field, namely: how to create archives, use and maintain archives and what constraints are faced in archives management. Furthermore, researchers conducted interviews with 3 staff members of the Administration General Section of the Binjai City DPRD Secretariat. research shows that the creation of archives has not been maximized, the Human Resources of the DPRD Kota Binjai have not been optimal in the use and maintenance of archives, there is no person in charge/special officer who handles incoming and outgoing letters up to the archiving stage, archive storage is still done manually, in storage, archives are stored based on the year of the archive so as to make it less optimal and inefficient in the efficiency of the archive, resulting in the archive not functioning according to its function in terms of creating and using and maintaining the archive.

DYNAMIC RECORDS MANAGEMENT SECRETARIAT SECTION IN BALI PROVINCE TOURISM OFFICE

This research aims to determine archive management at the Bali Provincial Tourism Service which includes the creation of archives, use of archives, maintenance and care of archives, and depreciation and destruction of archives. This research is descriptive research with a qualitative approach. There were 10 research informants, namely in the secretariat section for the archive depot. The data collection techniques used were observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis uses data collection techniques, data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. Data validity analysis techniques use source triangulation and method triangulation techniques. The results of the research show that the creation of archives in the form of recording incoming and outgoing letters has gone well, but sending outgoing letters cannot be done in one door, borrowing archives has not used special lending procedures, rediscovering archives still takes around 3-5 minutes, care and maintenance of archives is carried out by cleaning the archives from dust with a feather duster and applying camphor to the gaps in the archives and depreciation and destruction the archives has not been in accordance with the archive retention schedule.

ACTUAL PROBLEMS OF ACCEPTANCE AND DELIVERY OF ELECTRONIC ARCHIVAL DOCUMENTS IN THE REPUBLIC OF KAZAKHSTAN

The development of electronic resources and digital technologies has contributed to the transition to electronic document management and digitalization of document management. The question arises regarding the high-quality storage and creation of electronic archives. Therefore, the purpose of our article is to study the regulatory legal acts of the state that regulate the activities of the electronic archives of the country. To achieve this goal, the following tasks should be addressed: creating a list of documents included in the country’s electronic archive, examining the rules for digitizing and publishing archival documents in the Republic of Kazakhstan, and identifying current challenges and prospects for developing electronic archives. Results. With the adoption of the "Digital Kazakhstan" program, over 500,000 sheets of archival documents are digitized annually. However, by the beginning of 2023, only 5% of the nearly 16 million storage units in public storage within the National Archival Fund of Kazakhstan have been transferred to electronic format. This indicates low efficiency in using information systems in archives. The study showes that the country's archives carry out the online service «Issuance of archival certificates, copies of archival documents or archival extracts», they are available to citizens through the official website www.egov.kz and the «EGov» mobile application. The availability of digitized archival materials varies significantly in such regional archives of the country as the West Kazakhstan, East Kazakhstan and Aktobe regions; search and access to electronic materials on their official web pages is easy and fast, while the web pages of the archives of Almaty, Pavlodar , Mangistau, Kyzylorda, Karaganda, Zhambyl regions is limited. Conclusions. The study showed that the list of documents included in the electronic archive is not legally defined, the validity period of the electronic digital signature expires within one year, which further raises doubts about the legality of such documents. It is crucial to not only enhance the regulatory framework for archives and documentation but also create guidelines for archives to develop web resources.

Analisis Sistem Kearsipan Di Tutorping Lembaga Ketahanan Nasional RI

This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, namely by analyzing and describing the problems found. This research is based on primary data and secondary data. Primary data in this research was obtained using data collection techniques in the form of observation, interviews, and documentation. Secondary data was obtained from books, previous research, and articles related to research related to archival systems. The samples from this research were Tutorping employees of the Indonesian National Resilience Institute. Researchers also used data collection techniques in the form of surveys sent to 20 employees. In companies and institutions, the archival system is planning, supervising, training, organizing, developing, and managerial activities oriented towards the creation, maintenance, use, and depreciation of archives. This research aims to determine the archiving system at Tutorping, the Indonesian National Resilience Institute. The results of this research show that the majority of employees stated that they had implemented the archiving system well, and the archival storage system had been carried out by the needs of the activities that had been determined, but the space and space were inadequate so that the records piled up, but within a certain period they were destroyed following procedures. In the context of effectiveness, a good level of understanding of the archive system can create improvements in employee work. This research provides insight for employees into the importance of understanding the archive system within the institution. In this way, there will be an improvement in the archive system in the institution as a whole. 

The Archives Management System is Improved in the Administration Section of the DPRD Secretariat of South Sulawesi Province

All important documents, whether written or in the form of images, must be able to be found again. Therefore, the aim of this research is to find out the description of the Dynamic Records Management System in the Administration section of the DPRD Secretariat of South Sulawesi Province. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The data collection techniques used are the observation method, interview method, and documentation method. The data analysis technique used in this research is the Miles and Huberman model of data analysis, namely data collection techniques, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions. The number of informants in this study was 5 people, namely 1 head of the administrative sub-division and 4 administrative staff employees. The results of this research show that the archive management system is diminishing in the administrative section of the secretariat of the DPRD of South Sulawesi Province which includes the creation and receipt of dimanis archives in the form of making and recording them in agenda books, the use of domains archives includes archive lending services in the form of recording in agenda books, maintenance of dimanis archives includes storage and depreciation of archives, which includes the transfer and destruction of archives. This research can be used as reference material and knowledge about dynamic records management systems in more depth because different from previous research which used qualitative methods that focused on numbers and static, this research uses qualitative methods that focus on the process and meaning of the results. This research method focuses more on human elements, objects, and institutions, as well as the interaction relationships between these elements in an effort to understand an event, behavior, and phenomenon

Archives Management System in the General Bureau and Papua Province Governor's Office Protocol

Focused research discusses the Archives Management System in the General Bureau and Protocol of the Papua Province Governor's Office. The method used is a qualitative approach.To obtain data, this is done through: Observation, Interviews and Documentation. To analyze various phenomena in the field, the following steps are carried out: Information collection, data reduction, data presentation, and drawing final conclusions. The results of this study show that the planning carried out in archive management is only general in nature, the organizing carried out in archive management has not been carried out effectively, the actuating in archive management has not gone well, so in-depth planning needs to be carried out in accordance with archival procedures starting from the creation of archives, use of archives, maintenance of archives, up to destruction of archives.

The activities carried out by the organization will certainly create and produce a lot of archives. The archive becomes a document that must be maintained and cared for. The purpose of the research are to find: (1) The system of records management in the Kecamatan Bekasi Utara Office. (2) Obstacles experienced on records management in the Kecamatan Bekasi in Kecamatan Bekasi Utara office. The method that is used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques that are used are observation, interviews and document study. The result of this study indicates that records management in the Kecamatan Bekasi Utara Office carried out in several stages, namely the creation of archives, use of archives, maintenance of archives and archive shrinkage. The storage system used is based on index and numeric. The management principle applied is centralization-decentralization. Obstacles experienced on records management are lack of available facilities and infrastructure, no special budget given, maintenance of rooms that have not used air conditioning, and a digital (computerized) management and storage system has not been implemented.

Management of Dynamic Archives for Education Personnel in State Madrasah Aliyah

This research aimed at knowing 1) creating dynamic archives in the administrative section, and 2) storing dynamic archives in the administrative section at State Islamic Senior High School 3 Pekanbaru. It was a qualitative research with a descriptive method. The subjects of this research were the head of administration, administrative staff as key informants, and the vice of student affairs and teachers as additional informants. The object of this research was the management of archives in the administration section at State Islamic Senior High School 3 Pekanbaru. Interview, observation, and documentation techniques were used for collecting the data. The data were analyzed by using reduction, presentation, and conclusion. The results of this research show that: 1) The creation of dynamic archives in the administration section of MAN 3 Pekanbaru was carried out well, including the process of incoming and outgoing letters. 2) The storage of dynamic archives in the administration section of MAN 3 Pekanbaru was carried out well, however, there were a few obstacles in the archive retrieval process, namely archives or letters that have been disposed of and are located outside the administration room, such as the principal's room, the deputy principal's room for student affairs and curriculum, forgetting to take them back, so there are archives that are not stored in the filing cabinet.

This research aims to find out how dynamic records are managed, what obstacles are faced in implementing dynamic records management, and how efforts are made to overcome the obstacles faced in implementing dynamic records management at Agency A. This research uses qualitative methods. The data sources in this research are informants, namely the Head of the KUL sub-division, ASN Staff in the KUL section, HR and Legal Staff, and Staff. Data collection techniques in this research used observation, interview, and documentation techniques. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data display, and conclusion. The results of the research include the creation of archives (receiving and creating archives), recording and filing archives, storing archives, using archives, maintenance (filing, structuring, and storing), and depreciation including the activities of transferring and destroying archives.

Reawakening Cold War Social Movements Through Memory Work and Archival Performance

Abstract This article examines the ways in which artefacts of Cold War social movements are reassembled in and through the creation of archives in the present. We ask: how have artefacts of past social movements been re-engaged with memory work through intergenerational transmission and performance? Through the analysis of selected examples, including a) ethnographic work on a Pan-African social movement in Senegal, b) archival research of Cuban Cold War graphic design, and c) a decolonial pedagogical project taking place at a UK university, we illustrate the different – and at times overlapping – dimensions of the ‘memory-activism nexus’ they engage (Rigney 2018; 2020). Through a theoretical framework that draws from social movement theory, memory studies and performance theory in relation to archives, we identify and analyse contemporary engagements with past social movements. We argue that through distinct interpretations, (re)assemblages, and framings of artefacts, memory work through the creation of archives is necessarily an embodied and performative practice.

Analisis Implementasi Kearsipan pada Kantor Desa Peguyangan Kangin

The Peguyangan Kangin Village Office is one of the agencies that manages the operational activities of the village government. Administrative activities of the village office require archive management. The research objective was to find out how the analysis of the implementation of filings at the Peguyangan Kangin Village Office. Data collection techniques include: interviews with heads and staff of administrative and general affairs. Observation by making direct observations in the field to find out the actual conditions regarding the archives at the Peguyangan Kangin Village Office. The data analysis technique used is descriptive qualitative. The results of the research are that the creation of archives has been carried out well. Archives are stored in a special shelf so that they are easy to find, no special standards are applied. The obstacle is the lack of storage space in the village archive warehouse. The advice that can be given is to destroy archives for archives that have not been used for 5-6 years so that old archives do not accumulate in the village archive warehouse. For the destruction of archives, confirmation should be made at the Denpasar City Archives and Libraries Service regarding the archive destruction policy. The village office should digitize in managing archives so that archives stored can be easily searched.

Curating with Counterpowers

AbstractThis article examines the turn in Anglophone protest cultures since 2007 toward curating, museums, and heritage: a rise in the toppling of statues, demonstrations inside museums, and the creation of exhibitions, displays, and archives within the ephemeral spaces of protest camps and other mobilizations. The author argues for the historical causes of this curatorial turn in movement cultures, examines the structural power dynamics of this extrainstitutional curating vis-à-vis the practices and policies of cultural institutions, and puts these developments in critical dialogue with recent debates on “activist curating” and “institutional liberation.” Lastly, drawing on this analysis and firsthand experiences on both sides of this dynamic (as a core member of the collective Liberate Tate and as cocurator of the V&A exhibition Disobedient Objects), the author assesses this trajectory's potentials and limits as a cultural strategy for social change.

Archive management to support information services of the administration section

The purpose of this study is to explain archive management in supporting information services in the administration section. The research method used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive type of research. The results obtained from the research explain that the creation of archives through incoming and outgoing letters, the distribution of archives is carried out through procedures written in the standard operating procedures for distributing letters in government agencies, the storage of archives is carried out with a numbering system, the use of archives through retrieval and borrowing of archives, maintenance of archives carried out regularly every two months; Archive depreciation is only carried out by transferring archives to the warehouse. However, there are obstacles in its management, namely the absence of archivists, insufficient storage cupboards, and no archive management training while the supports are adequate storage warehouses and administrative staff who are painstaking in managing archive.

Digitisation of audio-visual archives at the National Archives of Zimbabwe

This research pursues bringing to light the modern landscape of administering audio-visual archives at the National Archives of Zimbabwe (NAZ) and getting it on the journey towards digital preservation. The Victorian era paved the way to analogue technological evolution in the audio-visual archiving fraternity. A technological breakthrough initiated by a Frenchman, Louis Daguerre, led to the invention of a photographic image on a silver-coated copper plate medium in 1839. Again, in 1927, the outstanding Thomas Alva Edison positively documented audio on a rotating tin foil cylinder carrier. The form of documented memories in many African archives is mostly in conventional formats. Nonetheless, in the contemporary past, NAZ combined audio-visual archives and television archives that were raised up by the United Kingdom, which was the colonial supremacy during the period of 1890 to 1979. The British administration established the Colonial Film Unit at the commencement of the Second World War, in 1939, as part of political creativity focused on colonies. The NAZ audio-visual unit was born in 1988 under the library section to assist the information desires of the establishment, through the creation, purchase, organisation, preservation, and dissemination of audio-visual archives. The researcher used a qualitative case study methodology with an interpretivist perspective where the main focus of the research was on the NAZ’s Harare head office. Interviews, document analysis and observations were used as the major data collecting tools. The results showed that the institution houses audio-visual materials and is still struggling to preserve all the formats digitally. Lastly, the study recommends the adoption of digital preservation mechanisms to facilitate the proper care and access of these precious non-conventional records as declared by UNESCO.
