Celastrus paniculatus seeds as a green corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel in H2SO4 acidic solution

Corrosion poses a significant threat to the durability and safety of metallic structures, particularly in aggressive environments such as sulfuric acid solutions. In this study, the corrosion inhibition performance of Celastrus paniculatus for steel in 0.5 M H2SO4 is investigated. Celastrus paniculatus, a natural plant extract known for its potential corrosion-inhibitive properties, is explored as a green alternative to synthetic inhibitors.The experimental methodology involves the immersion of steel specimens in 0.5 M H2SO4 solutions containing various concentrations of Celastrus paniculatus extract. Electrochemical techniques, such as potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, assess corrosion inhibition efficiency. Surface analysis techniques, i.e., scanning electron microscopy (SEM), were employed to investigate the steel surfaces' morphological changes and elemental composition also Quantum Chemical Computations were conducted to find the energy levels of the Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (ELUMO) and Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (EHOMO) and the energy gap (ΔE) between HUMO and LUMO from the optimized structure to find of which phytochemical absorb on the surface of the metal and this, we can clear that lower energy containing phytochemical will absorb more on the metal surface and have their greater efficiency. The study contributes to the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable corrosion inhibitors for steel in corrosive media, with potential applications in various industrial sectors. In metallic industries during acid cleaning or pickling processes metal undergoes acidic corrosion. This acidic corrosion can be prevented by many ways including alloying or dealloying of metals, anodic and cathodic protection or application of inhibitors. In this study, we have used the Celastrus paniculatus seed extract. Although its medicinal applications were explored but it was not used as a anticorrosive agent. So here we have determined the anticorrosive effects of Celastrus paniculatus seed in 0.5 M H2SO4 and used this as a novel and highly effective during acid cleaning.

Electrochemical and Quantum Chemical Investigations of novel pyrazole derivatives as a Corrosion Inhibitor for Stainless Steel in 2M H2SO4 medium

Stainless steels play a crucial role in diverse industrial domains. However, due to their exposure to acidic environments, stainless steels undergo the corrosion phenomenon, leading to the deterioration of the material and its properties. Thus, the objective of this work is to study the corrosion inhibition of stainless steel in an H2SO4 2M medium by using two organic compounds, namely Py-3:{1-amino-5,10-dioxo-3-(p-tolyl)-5,10-dihydro-1H-pyrazolo[1,2-b] phthalazine-2-carbonitrile} and Py-4:{1-amino-3-(2-chlorophenyl)-5,10-dioxo-5,10-dihydro-1H-pyrazolo[1,2-b]phthalazine-2carbonitrile}. This study was conducted using transient electrochemical methods in conjunction with a theoretical approach. The obtained results demonstrate that the addition of pyrazole compounds in the corrosive medium H2SO4 exhibits excellent inhibitory power against steel corrosion, with an inhibitory efficiency reaching 98%. The tested inhibitors are adsorbed into the surface of the metal by chemical bonds, Moreover, the adsorption of these compounds follows the Langmuir adsorption model. Theoretical calculations based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT) provide a better understanding of the reactivity of tested inhibitor towards stainless steel which they are in good agreement with the experimental findings.

Corrosion Inhibition by Musa paradisia ca Peel Extract for SS 304 in 1 M Hydrochloric Acid Solution

Objectives: To study the corrosion inhibition of Musa paradisiaca peel (MPP) extract for stainless steel (SS) 304. Method: The corrosion rate of stainless steel was studied by weight loss measurements in a 1 M hydrochloric acid solution at different concentrations of MPP inhibitor and at various temperatures, e.g., 298 K, 303 K, and 308 K. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to study the morphology of the films created on the stainless steel surface in various immersion media at various immersion times. Both potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) examined inhibition efficiency. Langmuir adsorption isotherm studied inhibitor surface adsorption SS 304. Findings: The corrosion rate and inhibition efficiency depend on the concentration of the inhibitor and the temperature. When there is an increase in the concentration of the inhibitor, inhibition efficiency increases, e.g., at 50 mg/l concentration, 77% inhibition efficiency, and at 200 mg/l concentration, 87% inhibition efficiency at 298 K. When temperature increases, inhibition efficiency decreases, e.g., at 200 mg/l concentration, 87% at 298 K, 85% at 303 K, and 83% at 308 K. Novelty: This article provides an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel 304. Musa paradisiaca peel extract inhibitor was previously used for iron, mild steel, and carbon steel but was not used for stainless steel 304 in 1 M HCl. An Eco-friendly Mangifera indica Leaves Extract Corrosion Inhibitor for Stainless Steel in Acidic Medium

Corrosion of metals and alloys is one of the most frequent problems encountered in chemical and process industries. Inefficient corrosion control measures typically lead to an increased risk of unplanned downtime, huge economic loss, environmental damage, and health and safety hazards. Hence, it is essential to develop environment-friendly and cost-effective corrosion inhibitors over existing toxic anticorrosive agents. The main objective of this work is to examine the efficacy of eco-friendly ethanolic extract of Mangifera indica leaves (MIL) in different concentrations as a green corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel (SS-316L) under an acidic environment. The inhibition efficiency of Mangifera indica leaves extract in 1 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) was evaluated by conventional weight loss method along with adsorption isotherm analysis. Chemical compounds present in leaf extract and changes in surface morphology of SS-316L samples were assessed using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) provided with elemental analysis. The results of the weight loss method revealed that the inhibition efficiency increases with increasing MIL extract concentration due to higher surface coverage. The highest inhibition efficiency of almost 63.43% in 14 days and minimum corrosion rate of 0.433 mm per year was obtained for SS-316 L in 1.0 M HCl with 1000 ppm concentration. The adsorption of MIL extract on SS-316L surface followed Freundlich adsorption isotherm, and the obtained value of free Energy of adsorption (ΔG˚ads = – 9.20 kJ.mol-1) indicates the physical adsorption mechanism. The developed regression-based models can predict the corrosion rate as a function of inhibitor concentration and exposure time with good accuracy (>80%). Thus, the present findings demonstrate that Mangifera indica L. leaves extract can suitably be applied as an inexpensive, non-toxic, biodegradable, efficient green corrosion inhibitor for the protection of stainless steel in acidic media.

Novel porphyrin derivatives as corrosion inhibitors for stainless steel 304 in acidic environment: synthesis, electrochemical and quantum calculation studies

A Novel 5,10,15,20-tetra (thiophen-2-yl) porphyrin (P1) and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (5-Bromothiophen-2-yl) porphyrin (P2) were successfully synthesized, and their chemical structures were proved based on its correct elemental analysis and spectral data (IR and 1H-NMR). These compounds were examined as corrosion inhibitors for stainless steel 304 (SS304) in 2 M HCl utilizing mass reduction (MR) and electrochemical tests at inhibitor concentration (1 × 10–6–21 × 10–6 M). The protection efficiency (IE %) was effectively enhanced with improving the concentration of investigated compounds and reached 92.5%, 88.5% at 21 × 10–6 M for P1 & P2, respectively and decreases with raising the temperature. Langmuir's isotherm was constrained as the best fitted isotherm depicts the physical–chemical adsorption capabilities of P1 & P2 on SS304 surface with change in ΔGoads = 22.5 kJ mol−1. According to the PDP data reported, P1 and P2 work as mixed find inhibitors to suppress both cathodic and anodic processes. Porphyrin derivatives (P1 & P2) are included on the surface of SS304, according to surface morphology techniques SEM/EDX and AFM. Synthesis of N1, N2-bis [1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene]oxalohydrazide and its corrosion inhibition effect on Stainless steel 304L in chloride media

N1, N2-bis [1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene]oxalohydrazide inhibitor (NOL) were synthesized and evaluated as corrosion inhibitors for stainless steel 304 L (SS304L) in one molar HCl. The adsorption properties of the synthesized NOL were determined by experimental and theoretical methods in an acid environment. With the aid of chemical methods such as mass loss method (ML), DC potentiodynamic polarization (PP), and AC impedance (EIS) tests. Outcome data obtained from these methods displayed that with increasing the concentration of these substances their inhibition efficiency (%IE) increased and reached 95.7 %. The presence of NOL reduces the capacity of the double layer and improves the charge transfer resistance in a solution of 1 M hydrochloric acid. NOL is a mixed-type inhibitor, conferring to the polarization curves. The attained data indicated that NOL was chemically adsorbed onto the SS304L surface in accordance with the Temkin isotherm. The surface protection examination was carried out using scanning electron microscopy and the formation of the complex on the surface was approved using Fourier Transfer Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Also, the quantum chemical parameters of NOL were computed and discussed. The results of several methods are in agreement with each other.

Insights into the use of two novel supramolecular compounds as corrosion inhibitors for stainless steel in a chloride environment: experimental as well as theoretical investigation.

Novel supramolecular (SCPs) compounds such as: {[Ni (EIN)4(NCS)2]}, SCP1 and {[Co (EIN)4 (NCS)2]}, SCP2 have been studied using weight loss (WL) and electrochemical tests on the corrosion performance of stainless steel 304 (SS304) in 1.0 M hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution. The experimental results revealed that inhibition efficacy (η%) rises with increasing concentrations of SCPs and reached 92.3% and 89.6% at 16 × 10-6 M, 25 °C, from the WL method for SCP1 and SCP2, respectively. However, by raising the temperature, η% was reduced. Polarization measurements (PDP) showed that the SCPs molecules represent a mixed-type. The SCPs were adsorbed on a SS304 surface physically, and the Langmuir adsorption isotherm was found to govern the adsorption process. The determination of thermodynamic parameters was carried out at various temperatures. Quantum chemical calculations were calculated to prove the adsorption process of SCP components, using the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and electron density map. The inhibition performance of SCPs for SS304 dissolution in an acidic medium was proved to be excellent through FT-IR and AFM analysis. The results obtained from all measurements exhibit a high level of agreement with each other.

Monte Carlo simulation, molecular dynamic simulation, quantum chemical calculation and anti-corrosive behaviour of Citrus limetta pulp waste extract for stainless steel (SS-410) in acidic medium

Corrosion occurs as a result of acid-based cleaning process in petroleum industry. Some of the procedures require 15% hydrochloric acid (HCl) solution thus speeding the corrosion rate. In this study, Citrus limetta pulp waste was used to obtain corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel (SS)-410 in presence of 15% HCl solution. The C. limetta pulp waste extract has shown maximum 90.90% corrosion inhibition efficiency at 4 g/L in 15% HCl solution using potentiodynamic polarization analysis. Scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-rays diffraction study confirmed the adsorption of the pulp waste extract on the SS surface. The pulp waste extract followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm thus confirming monolayer formation on the surface of SS-410. Theoretical and computational studies confirmed that Linalool was main phytochemical responsible for anti-corrosive effect. Linalool and SS-410 surface interactions was studied using molecular simulation. Overall, C. limetta pulp waste extract has shown anti-corrosive behaviour in 15% hydrochloric acid on SS-410 surface.

Aizoon extract as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel 430 in HCl solution.

Aizoon extract is used as an eco-friendly anti-corrosive material for stainless steel 430 (SS430) in a 2 M hydrochloric acid solution. Many strategies were utilized to estimate the mitigation efficacy such as mass reduction (MR), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and potentiodynamic polarization (PDP). The inhibition percentage (%I) increases by increasing the concentration of Aizoon and reaches 95.8% at 300 ppm and 298 K, while it lowers by raising the temperature, reaching 85.6% at 318 K. Tafel curves demonstrated that Aizoon extract is a mixed type inhibitor with an excellent ability to inhibit the cathodic reaction. Adsorption of the Aizoon extract on an SS430 surface is regulated by the Langmuir adsorption model. The value is is -20.9 kJ mol-1 at 298 K indicating that the adsorption is of mixed type affecting both cathodic and anodic reactions. Thermodynamic factors for adsorption and activation processes were estimated and discussed. The adsorption of Aizoon extract on the SS430 surface was tested utilizing Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) techniques. The Nyquist curves confirmed that Aizoon extract prohibits the disintegration of SS430 in an acid medium without changing the dissolution reaction mechanism. The theoretical calculations showed that Aizoon extract is considered as an excellent corrosion inhibitor. The experimental data were supported by theoretical evaluations.

Synthesis, experimental and theoretical studies of sesquiterpenic thiosemicarbazone and semicarbazone as organic corrosion inhibitors for stainless steel 321 in H2SO4 1M

In this work, the compounds thiosemicarbazone and semicarbazone sesquiterpene (TSC and SMC, respectively) were synthesized from sesquiterpene α,β-unsaturated ketone and investigated for their anti-corrosion behavior and electrochemical activity. Various spectroscopic analyses were performed (FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and HRMS) to characterize these molecules. The inhibitory performance of these inhibitors on corrosion of stainless steel 321 in 1 M H2SO4 medium was studied using the potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) method that indicated that these compounds acted as mixed-type inhibitors with dominant cathodic inhibition. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was performed to assess the electrochemical activity and calculate the experimental band of the tested molecules. The values of the band gap of SMC and TSC were comparable (∼0.52 eV). The electrochemical findings agree quite well with the functional density theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo (MC) theoretical studies. The strong adsorption of the tested molecules and stainless steel surface, through nitrogen groups, is demonstrated. No significant difference resulting from (C=S) and (C=O) groups on the electrochemical and theoretical behaviors is noted. The nitrogen sites present an important reactivity for the metal/inhibitor interaction as evidenced by Mullikan negative charges and HOMO/LUMO spacial distributions.

Molecular dynamic simulation, quantum chemical calculation and electrochemical behaviour of Punica granatum peel extract as eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel (SS-410) in acidic medium

Environmental pollution is a current global concern. Cleaning of petroleum pipes involve 15% hydrochloric acid (HCl) treatment. Metal corrosion because of acid treatment is a common problem in petroleum industry. Chemical anticorrosive agent can be used but trigger environmental concerns. Therefore, use of waste material as green anticorrosive agent is a preferable solution to corrosion of petroleum grade steel. In current study waste from Punica granatum fruit peel was used to prevent corrosion of stainless steel 410 (SS-410) in presence of 15% HCl. Potentiodynamic polarization study revealed maximum 91.79 % corrosion inhibition efficiency of Punica granatum fruit peel extract at 4 g/L in 15% HCl solution. P. granatum peel extract showed anodic type of inhibition. The adsorption of the peel extract of P. granatum on the SS-410 surface was evident from scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-rays diffraction studies. The P. granatum peel extract formed a monolayer on the surface of SS-410 as it followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Theoretical and computational studies confirmed that Quercetin was main phytochemical responsible for the anti-corrosive effect. The interaction between Quercetin and SS-410 surface interactions was studied by Molecular simulation studies. Overall P. granatum peel extract possessed anti-corrosive behaviour against SS-410 surface in 15% hydrochloric acid.

There are various types of procedures in the petroleum industries that uses 15% hydrochloric acid solution. Use of HCl often results into corrosion of stainless steel (SS) 410. In this study, extract prepared from waste material, Beta vulgaris peel has been explored as green corrosion inhibitor for SS 410 in 15% HCl solution. Potentiodynamic polarization study showed maximum 90.17% corrosion inhibition efficiency at 4 g/L of B. vulgaris peel extract in 15% HCl solution. Scanning electron, atomic force microscopy and X-rays diffraction study confirmed the adsorption of B. vulgaris peel extract on the SS 410 surface. The peel extract followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm, which confirmed monolayer formation on the surface of SS 410. Vitexin was found to be main phytochemical responsible for the anti-corrosive effect according to the theoretical and computational studies. Vitexin and SS 410 interactions were studied by molecular simulation. Overall, the B. vulgaris peel extract has shown anti-corrosive behaviour against SS 410 surface in 15% hydrochloric acid.

Phyllanthus emblica seed extract as corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel used in petroleum industry (SS-410) in acidic medium

Some procedures in petroleum industry involve use of 15% hydrochloric acid solution that result into corrosion problem. Plant based green corrosion inhibitors specifically from waste sources are eco-friendly and cost-effective solution to corrosion. The objective of this study is to evaluate the corrosion inhibition properties of Phyllanthus emblica seed extract (PESE) prepared from waste seeds in a 15% hydrochloric acidic media for stainless steel (SS-410). Electrochemical impedance study revealed maximum 92.43% corrosion inhibition efficiency using 4g/L of PESE in 15% HCl solution. Scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction study confirmed the adsorption of PESE on the SS-410 surface. PESE followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm that proved PESE monolayer formation on the surface of SS-410. Theoretical study confirmed that 3,4,8,9,10-pentahydroxy-dibenzo[b,d] was main phytochemical responsible for anti-corrosive effect. Overall, PESE has shown anti-corrosive potential against SS-410 corrosion in aggressive corrosive medium, 15% hydrochloric acid.

Swertia chirata extract mediated synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles and its use as corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel 316 L in Ringer’s solution

Artificial biomedical devices are used to replace, repair or improve the functioning of damaged body organs or tissue. Corrosion of the metallic component placed in the human body leads to their failure or improper functioning. This study focuses on the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) by Swertia chirata extract and its use as a corrosion inhibitor for stainless steel (SS) 316 L in Ringer’s solution. Ringer’s solution mimics isotonic natural body fluids that may lead to corrosion of biomedical implants. UV–vis spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, and XRD were used for the NPs characterisation. The NPs were spherical in shape and 10–20 nm in size. The corrosion inhibition efficiency was measured using gravimetric and electrochemical methods. SEM and AFM analysis confirmed the corrosion preventive effect of iron oxide NPs on the SS-316L surface. Further, a concentration-dependent increase in the inhibition efficiency was observed with maximum 78.37% corrosion inhibition at 100 ppm NPs concentration. Thus, iron oxide NPs can be utilised as a potent anti-corrosive agent which can protect the metal surface from further deterioration in harsh body environments.

Electrochemical and theoretical studies on the corrosion inhibition performance of some synthesized d-Limonene based heterocyclic compounds

The present work focuses on the synthesis, structural characterization and electrochemical investigation of some heterocyclic compounds prepared from d-limonene. Firstly, 3-acetylisoxazoline was synthesized from d-limonene, this precursor is then converted to its thiosemicarbazone derivatives which were then cyclized to produce their corresponding thiazolidine-4-ones. The obtained compounds were characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and mass spectrometric techniques. Further, DFT quantum chemical studies were also used to interpret the structural properties of the compounds using the B3LYP/6–311++G (d, p) basis set. The obtained results from experimental and theoretical studies were in good agreement showing that compounds bearing both isoxazoline and thiazolidine-4-one moieties act as good corrosion inhibitors for stainless steel in 1 M sulfuric acid.
