Abstract

Some procedures in petroleum industry involve use of 15% hydrochloric acid solution that result into corrosion problem. Plant based green corrosion inhibitors specifically from waste sources are eco-friendly and cost-effective solution to corrosion. The objective of this study is to evaluate the corrosion inhibition properties of Phyllanthus emblica seed extract (PESE) prepared from waste seeds in a 15% hydrochloric acidic media for stainless steel (SS-410). Electrochemical impedance study revealed maximum 92.43% corrosion inhibition efficiency using 4g/L of PESE in 15% HCl solution. Scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction study confirmed the adsorption of PESE on the SS-410 surface. PESE followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm that proved PESE monolayer formation on the surface of SS-410. Theoretical study confirmed that 3,4,8,9,10-pentahydroxy-dibenzo[b,d] was main phytochemical responsible for anti-corrosive effect. Overall, PESE has shown anti-corrosive potential against SS-410 corrosion in aggressive corrosive medium, 15% hydrochloric acid.
