The hadal benthopelagic Calanoida from the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench, North Pacific with the description of a new diaixid genus (Copepoda: Calanoida)

The new calanoid copepod genus Mixtodiaixis gen. nov., is based on the female and male of its type species, described herein. The specimens were collected in the vicinity of the seabed in the hadal zone of the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench, Pacific Ocean, at depths below 7000 m. Mixtodiaixis kurambiohadalis sp. nov. is a representative of the family Diaixidae distinguished by the mandible gnathobase supplied by 5 teeth and 4 setae, the maxillule praecoxal arthrite with 7 terminal spines, each of the maxilla basal endites armed with two sclerotized and one worm-like sensory setae, and a maxilliped coxal endite that possesses 2 setae. Along with the new diaixid species and genus, 16 representatives of Arietellidae, Tharybidae, Phaennidae, Scolecitrichidae, Aetideidae, Rostrocalanidae and Ryocalanidae were observed in the samples obtained from the hadal of the Kurile-Kamchatka Trench directly above the bottom. In regard to the members of Arietellidae, Diaixidae, Rostrocalanidae, Ryocalanidae and Tharybidae, this is their first record from such a great depths of the World Ocean.

Comfort in stratification and trophic flexibility: argentine anchovy, Engraulis anchoita, larvae life traits in relation to their food sources

Fish larvae feeding success is crucial for adult recruitment, which affects both fisheries and ecosystem regulation processes. Engraulis anchoita is a species of great ecological and fishing relevance in the South-West Atlantic Ocean, with a wide latitudinal distribution and active spawning throughout the year and strongly associated with frontal areas. E. anchoita larvae have been described as exclusively feeding on small copepods and their early developmental stages. In this study, the diet, nutritional condition, and daily growth of E. anchoita larvae were estimated in different environmental scenarios in the South-West Atlantic Ocean. Carbon and Nitrogen stable isotopes analysis, otolith microstructure analysis, and RNA/DNA index determination were performed. The larval diet, which was evaluated based on the availability of potential prey, varied with respect to the water column stability. It was observed that the larvae tend to feed on microphytoplankton in stratified waters and on calanoid copepods in waters with a homogeneous vertical structure. The growth and nutritional condition indexes responded to ontogeny, presenting higher values at larger larval sizes. Growth indexes also responded positively to the stratified water column structure in comparison to the homogeneous one. The nutritional condition index was only explained by the size of the individuals. This study found that E. anchoita larvae had greater trophic flexibility than previously suspected, as they included microphytoplankton as the main food item under certain oceanographic conditions without negative impacts on their growth or nutritional condition.

The Genome Architecture of the Copepod Eurytemora carolleeae -the Highly Invasive Atlantic Clade of the Eurytemoraaffinis Species Complex.

Copepods are among the most abundant organisms on the planet and play critical functions in aquatic ecosystems. Among copepods, populations of the Eurytemora affinis species complex are numerically dominant in many coastal habitats and serve as food sources for major fisheries. Intriguingly, certain populations possess the unusual capacity to invade novel salinities on rapid time scales. Despite their ecological importance, high-quality genomic resources have been absent for calanoid copepods, limiting our ability to comprehensively dissect the genome architecture underlying the highly invasive and adaptive capacity of certain populations. Here, we present the first chromosome-level genome of a calanoid copepod, from the Atlantic clade (Eurytemora carolleeae) of the E. affinis species complex. This genome was assembled using high-coverage PacBio long-read and Hi-C sequences of an inbred line, generated through 30 generations of full-sib mating. This genome, consisting of 529.3 Mb (contig N50 = 4.2 Mb, scaffold N50 = 140.6 Mb), was anchored onto four chromosomes. Genome annotation predicted 20,262 protein-coding genes, of which ion transport-related gene families were substantially expanded based on comparative analyses of 12 additional arthropod genomes. Also, we found genome-wide signatures of historical gene body methylation of the ion transport-related genes and the significant clustering of these genes on each chromosome. This genome represents one of the most contiguous copepod genomes to date and is among the highest quality marine invertebrate genomes. As such, this genome provides an invaluable resource to help yield fundamental insights into the ability of this copepod to adapt to rapidly changing environments.

Low‐frequency noise affects development and movement patterns of a calanoid copepod

AbstractAnthropogenic stressors are omnipresent in marine environments and interfere with organisms of all sizes, from large whales to small organisms. We investigated potential interactive multistressor effects of increased temperature with chronic low‐frequency sound on the development and movement patterns of the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa, a model species for small marine zooplankton. Copepods were reared while exposed to chronic low‐frequency sound around 15 and 22 dB re 1 μPa2 Hz−1 above control sound pressure levels at frequencies between 110 and 120 Hz, at 21°C (increased temperature) and 18°C (control temperature). For each sound and temperature scenario, we assessed after‐incubation development rate, stage distribution, and movement patterns. We found that fewer copepods reached the developmental stages copepodites IV to VI in low‐frequency sound conditions, even though warmer conditions increased developmental rate. By using high‐speed videography in both control and low‐frequency sound conditions, we observed that copepods showed more escape behaviors (drops) and fewer feeding‐associated behaviors (helical swimming) when exposed to low‐frequency sound (~ 42 dB higher than normal at 142 Hz). Copepods reared with added low‐frequency sound showed fewer feeding‐associated behaviors and did not reverse these trends despite the absence of added sound in their feeding environment. These significant behavioral changes suggest detrimental negative, life‐long, consequences for copepods exposed to low‐frequency sound.

Assessment of the cyst wall and surface microbiota in dormant embryos of the Antarctic calanoid copepod, Boeckella poppei.

Embryos of zooplankton from inland waters and estuaries can remain viable for years in an extreme state of metabolic suppression. How these embryos resist microbial attack with limited metabolic capacity for immune defence or repair is unknown. As a first step in evaluating resistance to microbial attack in dormant zooplankton, surface colonization of the Antarctic freshwater copepod, Boeckella poppei, was evaluated. Scanning electron micrographs demonstrate the outer two layers of a five-layered cyst wall in B. poppei fragment and create a complex environment for microbial colonization. By contrast, the third layer remains undamaged during years of embryo storage in native sediment. The absence of damage to the third layer indicates that it is resistant to degradation by microbial enzymes. Scanning electron microscopy and microbiome analysis using the 16S ribosomal subunit gene and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region demonstrate the presence of a diverse microbial community on the embryo surface. Coverage of the embryos with microbial life varies from a sparse population with individual microbes to complete coverage by a thick biofilm. Extracellular polymeric substance binds debris and provides a structural element for the microbial community. Frequent observation of bacterial fission indicates that the biofilm is viable in stored sediments.

Stable Isotope Analysis of Planktonic Lower Food Webs of Lakes Erie, Huron, Michigan and Superior

Historical plankton samples from the St. Lawrence Great Lakes were subjected to taxon-specific 15N analysis to test the hypothesis that the changes recorded in zooplankton communities during the 21st Century are related to changes in the trophic positions of large-bodied carnivorous copepods. Daphnia mendotae was used as the reference herbivore for trophic-level comparisons. The results were that Limnocalanus macrurus, Diaptomus (Leptodiaptomus) sicilis as well as the cladoceran Bythotrephes cederstroemi show evidence of elevated carnivory compared to data from the 20th Century. The large diaptomid Diaptomus (Leptodiaptomus) sicilis has a stable isotope signature that is significantly more carnivorous in Lake Superior than in Lakes Michigan and Huron by approximately one-half trophic level. Differences were found in 10 cases out of 15 for Limnocalanus (Huron, Michigan Superior), 6 cases out of 15 for Diaptomus (Huron, Michigan) and in 1 out of 1 for Senecella (Superior). We did not find evidence to support the theory that large-bodied calanoid copepods may have improved their representation in the food webs of the upper Great Lakes by shifting their trophic position downward. Instead, large-bodied Calanoida have increased their trophic positions in parallel with their increased relative abundance. More research is thus needed to explain the driving forces for changing food web dynamics in the Great Lakes.

Microplastics at Environmentally Relevant Concentrations Had Minimal Impacts on Pelagic Zooplankton Communities in a Large In-Lake Mesocosm Experiment.

To assess the potential risks of contemporary levels of plastic pollution in freshwater ecosystems, a large-scale experiment was conducted over 10 weeks in a boreal lake at the IISD-Experimental Lakes Area (Ontario, Canada). Fragments of common polymers (polyethylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate), each with distinct colors and buoyancies, were added as a single pulse to seven in-lake mesocosms in equal contributions in a range of environmentally relevant nominal concentrations (6-29,240 particles/L). Two additional mesocosms with no added microplastics were used as controls. Zooplankton ingested low levels of microplastics (mean of 0.06 particles/individual ± SD 0.07) and generally their total abundance and community composition were not negatively impacted. Temporary changes were however observed; total zooplankton abundance and abundance of calanoid copepods were temporarily stimulated by increasing nominal microplastic concentrations, and modest, short-term reductions in egg production of the cyclopoid copepod Tropocyclops extensus and abundance of copepod nauplii occurred. Collectively, these results suggest that microplastics could have complex impacts on zooplankton communities, stimulating some species while negatively impacting others.

Ecological impact of artificial barrage on calanoid copepods in the Vembanad Lake, Southwest Coast of India

The Vembanad Lake (VL) is a brackish water lagoon, an integral part of Ramsar site, Vembanad Kol Wetland ecosystem on the southwestern coast of India. VL faces escalating anthropogenic impact, notably worsened by the establishment of the Thanneermukkom barrage (TMB) in 1976. This study hypothesizes that the TMB has led to significant ecological changes in VL, specifically altering the distribution and abundance of calanoid copepods, which are vital as a food source for higher trophic levels, particularly fish. To test this hypothesis, zooplankton samples were collected from various sites along the lake, and environmental parameters such as salinity and chlorophyll-a concentration were measured. This investigation reveals a distinct limnetic zone in the southern region, in contrast to the oligo-mesohaline zone in the north, attributed to the TMB. The study identifies the prevalence of calanoid copepod species such as Heliodiaptomus cinctus, Allodiaptomus mirabilipes, and Acartiella gravelyi in the TMB-South region, reflecting a freshwater-dominated ecosystem. The low salinity and high chlorophyll-a content in this area create an optimal environment for these species. In contrast, the dominance of Acartia (Odontacartia) spinicauda, Pseudodiaptomus serricadatus, and Paracalanus sp. in the TMB-North indicates higher salinity levels, with species in this region adapting to a different ecological niche. Thus, the installation of the TMB has significantly altered the ecological balance of VL by dividing the water body into two distinct salinity zones. This separation has led to changes in the distribution and abundance of calanoid copepods, which are essential for energy transfer to higher trophic levels in the VL food web, consequently affecting fish populations and overall biodiversity.

Extreme Temperatures Reduce Copepod Performance and Change the Relative Abundance of Internal Microbiota

ABSTRACTCopepods are one of the most abundant invertebrate groups in the seas and oceans and are a significant food source for marine animals. Copepods are also particularly sensitive to elevated temperatures. However, it is relatively unknown how the internal microbiome influences copepod susceptibility to warming. We addressed this fundamental knowledge gap by assessing key life history traits (survival, development, and reproduction) and changes in the internal microbiome in the tropical calanoid copepod Acartia sp. in response to warming (26°C, 30°C, and 34°C). Copepod microbiomes were analyzed using high throughput DNA sequencing of V1–V9 of 16S rRNA hypervariable regions. Copepod performance was better at 30°C than at 26°C, as indicated by faster development, a higher growth rate, and fecundity. However, these parameters strongly decreased at 34°C. We recorded 1,262,987 amplicon sequence reads, corresponding to 392 total operational taxonomic units (OTUs) at 97% similarity. Warming did not affect OTU numbers and the biodiversity indices, but it substantially changed the relative abundance of three major phyla: Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidota. The thermophilic and opportunistic Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota increased under extreme temperatures (34°C) while Actinobacteria abundance was strongly reduced. Changes in the relative abundance of these bacteria might be related to reduced copepod growth, survival, and reproduction under extreme temperatures. Profiling the functional role of all internal bacterial groups in response to the temperature change will fundamentally advance our mechanistic understanding of the performance of tropical copepods and, more generally, marine invertebrates to a warming climate.

Insight into the diet of early stages of mesopelagic fishes in the Indian Ocean using DNA metabarcoding

Despite playing a critical role in oligotrophic ocean food webs, relatively little is known about the diet of mesopelagic fishes in the Indian Ocean. These fishes are an abundant component of the micronekton assemblages and are a major energy- and nutrient-rich food source, linking the plankton which they feed on to marine predators at higher trophic levels. DNA metabarcoding, a molecular method to identify species from mixed assemblages, has not been commonly used in studies of mesopelagic fish diet, but using it to analyse gut contents can greatly improve the understanding of mesopelagic fish feeding ecology. In this study, we apply DNA metabarcoding (18S rRNA and COI) to gut contents from Stomiiformes and Myctophiformes species from 20 sampling stations covering 30° of latitude on the 110°E meridian in the Indian Ocean. In total, 174 fish specimens from 13 genera were examined. Differences in the gut contents among fish families, geographic areas and fish stages were identified. Specimens within the family Myctophidae had the most diverse diet, more so in the northern sampling stations than the south. Gonostomatidae had the least diverse diet. Overall, the most frequently identified prey items from the gut contents were calanoid copepods and halocyprid ostracods. The proportion of halocyprids were also identified to be significantly different among Myctophidae larvae and juvenile specimens, which is a potential ontogenic shift in diet towards a higher ostracod contribution in juveniles as mouth gape increases. In comparison with other plankton abundance data, Copepoda were the most abundant plankton in the gut contents of all fishes sampled throughout the latitudinal gradient, allowing them to be a potential food resource through the region. There are indications that other less abundant plankton, such as Ostracoda and Malacostraca, may be preferentially targeted by some mesopelagic fish families.

Zooplankton vertical stratification in the East-pacific and Indian sectors of the Southern Ocean

IntroductionIn the Southern Ocean, the large-scale distribution of zooplankton, including their abundance and community composition from the epipelagic to the upper bathypelagic layers, remains poorly understood. This gap in knowledge limits our comprehension of their ecological and biogeochemical roles.MethodsTo better understand their community structure, depth-stratified zooplankton samples were collected from 0 to 1500 m during four summers in the East-Pacific and Indian sectors of the Southern Ocean. In addition, analysis of environmental drivers including temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll a concentration, as well as water masses was conducted.ResultsOur study indicates that zooplankton diversity may be similar between the two sectors, while zooplankton abundance was higher in the East-Pacific sector during different sampling months and years. Moreover, zooplankton abundance decreased with depth in both sectors. Based on cluster analysis, zooplankton communities were generally divided by either the epipelagic or the deeper layers’ communities. In both sectors, the epipelagic layer was dominated by cyclopoid copepods, such as Oithona similis and Oncaea curvata, as well as calanoid copepods including Calanoides acutus, Rhincalanus gigas, and Ctenocalanus citer, while copepods and other taxa including Chaetognatha, Amphipoda, and Ostracoda, were important contributors to the deep layer communities.DiscussionOur analysis revealed that water masses, combined with their physical characteristics such as specific temperature and salinity ranges and depth, along with biological factors such as chlorophyll a concentration, might be the most important drivers for structuring zooplankton communities from epipelagic to upper bathypelagic layer.

Integrative approach to monitoring metazoan diversity and distribution in two Mediterranean coastal sites through morphology and organismal eDNA

Marine and coastal ecosystems respond to climate change in various ways, such as the type of ecosystem, the species composition, interactions, and distribution, and the effect of local stressors. Metazoan organisms, particularly zooplankton, are important indicators for monitoring the effects climate-driven warming in marine coastal ecosystems over the long term. In this study, the diversity and distribution of zooplankton communities in the Mediterranean Sea (Canyon Dohrn and LTER-MareChiara, Gulf of Naples), a known biodiversity and climate changes hotspot, have been assessed using the integration of morphological-based identification and organismal eDNA. Our findings showed that the multi-locus strategy including the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene and the hypervariable region V9 of the 18S rDNA (18S V9) as targets, improved the taxonomic overview, with the COI gene being more effective than the 18S V9 region for metazoans at the species level. However, appendicularians were detected only with the 18S V9 region. Overall, organismal eDNA is a powerful approach for revealing hidden biodiversity, especially for gelatinous and meroplankton components, and provided new insights into biodiversity patterns. The ecological importance of calanoid copepods in coastal ecosystems has been confirmed. In contrast, the discovery of 13 new metazoan records in the Mediterranean Sea, including two non-indigenous copepod species, suggested that local stressors affect zooplankton community structure and resilience, highlighting the importance of biomonitoring and protecting marine coastal ecosystems.

A description of a new species of Mongolodiaptomus Kiefer, 1937 (Copepoda, Calanoida, Diaptomidae) from Thailand with an up-to-date key to the genus.

The genus Mongolodiaptomus is widely distributed in stagnant water bodies in Southeast Asia. During a comprehensive collection of freshwater copepods from different areas in Thailand, a previously unknown species of calanoid copepod, Mongolodiaptomusphutakaensis sp. nov., was recorded. Representatives were found in a natural swamp located in the Kok Phutaka community forest in Khon Kaen Province, northeastern Thailand. The new species belongs to the "M.loeiensis species group" and most closely resembles M.loeiensis and M.mekongensis by having a distinct shape of the second exopodal segment of the male right P5, with enlarged proximal and distal parts of the outer margin as well as a bent and twisted principal lateral spine. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by various characters in the males. The ventral surface of the right caudal ramus has two chitinous teeth and two knobs. The intercoxal plate is slightly produced distally and without any spine. The right P5 basis lacks a hyaline membrane on the inner margin but has a distinct spur-like chitinous process at the mid-distal margin on the posterior surface. The left P5 basis has a thin, longer hyaline lamella on the inner margin. The new species is rare, having been observed in only one out of approximately 5,000 surveyed locations in Thailand. A detailed morphological comparison and an up-to-date key to the Mongolodiaptomus species are presented. Their taxonomic characters, interspecies relationships, and biogeography are discussed.

Spring resting egg production of the calanoid copepod, Eurytemora affinis, in a freshet-dominated estuary.

Seasonal peaks in river discharge, such as snowmelt-dominated freshets, are predictable events that can have a large effect on flushing rates and salinity in estuaries. Resting eggs, which many coastal and estuarine copepods produce for overwintering or aestivation, could also serve to bridge predictable peaks in river discharge. We assessed the timing of resting egg production of the egg-carrying estuarine copepod, Eurytemora affinis (Poppe), in relation to river discharge in the Fraser River Estuary, Canada. Approximately 30 field-collected females were individually incubated on 12 occasions over the period February 2015-May 2016. Eurytemora affinis abundance and population structure were investigated from vertical net tow samples collected twice monthly to monthly. Resting eggs occurred primarily in May 2015 and May 2016 (6.5 and 9.2 eggs day-1, respectively), a month prior to peak flows, and the proportion of offspring that were resting eggs increased with river discharge. Eurytemora affinis reached a minimum abundance in July 2015, when the population was dominated by adults (86%). Resting egg production in E. affinis is typically considered an overwintering mechanism but we suggest that the ultimate driver of resting egg production in this population is avoidance of flushing and/or low salinities.

Community structure of whole pelagic copepods along the Kuroshio: Increase in the abundance and size in the north frontal area of the Kuroshio axis near the Japanese archipelago

The Kuroshio ecosystem is an important nursery ground for various fish species. Because the prey biomass and composition influence the recruitment of larval and juvenile fish, we investigated the variation in the abundance, carbon biomass, and community structure of copepods, which are the main prey for larval and juvenile fish, along the Kuroshio from the eastern coast of Taiwan to the Boso Peninsula, Japan from 8–November 24, 2015, using 100 μm-meshed plankton net samples. We identified two groups of stations (A and B) by the cluster analysis based on the composition and abundance for adult copepods (Q-mode). The total copepod abundance and carbon biomass were higher in Group A than in Group B. Of the dominant species assemblages classified by cluster analysis (R-mode), the abundance of species assemblages S2b and S3, which were composed of small-sized species (e.g., Oithona and Oncaea species), did not differ between Groups A and B, indicating that they were distributed abundantly throughout the Kuroshio region. On the other hand, the species assemblages (S1 and S2a) including the medium-sized calanoid copepods of coastal species and subtropical species (e.g., Paracalanus aculeatus and Clausocalanus furcatus) contributed to the high abundance and biomass of Group A. Group A occurred in the north-frontal area of the Kuroshio axis near the Japanese archipelago where chlorophyll a was high. This indicates that the community was changed by the bottom-up processes driven by nutrient supply from the subsurface layer in the north-frontal area. These results show that although the small-sized copepods were usually dominant in numerical abundance in the Kuroshio region as well as other oligotrophic oceans, the medium-sized copepods were an important component in the copepod community in water with high primary production. We concluded that the ecosystem in the north-frontal area downstream of the Kuroshio might provide optimal prey environments for diverse fish larvae and juveniles.

Larval coregonine density and diet composition along beaches of northern Lake Michigan

Recent oligotrophication in Lake Michigan has contributed to reduced biomass of spring zooplankton and a shift in the zooplankton assemblage toward more calanoid copepods. These changes have likely altered prey availability for first feeding native fish species that hatch in early spring. While spring zooplankton densities and assemblage compositions are routinely monitored in offshore areas of Lake Michigan, zooplankton in nearshore areas such as shallow beach environments are less studied; and associated descriptions of diet characteristics among larval coregonine species are limited. In this study, we a) describe the nearshore (<1 m depth) zooplankton assemblage at four sites in northeastern Lake Michigan during early spring 2015–2019 and b) compare diets and diet selectivity of larval lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) and Cisco (C. artedi). Zooplankton composition varied among years, but calanoid copepods and copepod nauplii consistently dominated the zooplankton assemblage. Cisco and lake whitefish larvae were captured regularly, with Elk Rapids containing the highest proportion of ciscoes each year. For both species, calanoid and cyclopoid copepods were common in diets and were positively selected as prey. Although previous research has indicated high consumption of cyclopoid copepods by larval coregonines, our results provide new evidence that larval lake whitefish and Cisco in northeastern Lake Michigan will also consume and select for calanoid copepods when they are abundant. As such, should calanoid zooplankton continue to dominate the copepod community in Lake Michigan, larval coregonines appear capable of exploiting this abundant prey resource to improve their likelihood of survival to later life stages.

Grazing impact of the calanoid copepods Acartia spp. on the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax in the western coastal waters of Korea.

Marine dinoflagellate species in the genus Alexandrium are well known to produce paralytic shellfish poison as well as common coastal species with cosmopolitan distribution. However, few studies on the feeding of copepods on Alexandrium species have been conducted. The toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium pseudogonyaulax contains goniodomin A and causes red tides in many countries. To investigate the relationship between the toxic dinoflagellate A. pseudogonyaulax and the calanoid copepods Acartia spp., we quantified the ingestion rates of Acartia spp. feeding on A. pseudogonyaulax as a function of prey concentration. Additionally, we estimated grazing coefficients by integrating data from field observations of Acartia spp. and coexisting A. pseudogonyaulax with laboratory measurements of ingestion rates obtained during this investigation. Furthermore, we compared the ingestion rates of Acartia spp. and other predators feeding on Alexandrium species as previously reported. The ingestion rates of Acartia spp. on A. pseudogonyaulax increased continuously with increasing mean prey concentration. The highest values among the ingestion rate of Acartia spp. feeding on A. pseudogonyaulax was 3,407 cells predator-1 d-1 (4,872 ng C predator-1 d-1) at the given prey concentration. The calculated grazing coefficients for Acartia spp. on A. pseudogonyaulax in Shiwha Bay, Korea, were up to 0.073 d-1. The results of this study suggest that A. pseudogonyaulax may decrease or maintain the population of Acartia spp. in marine food webs.

Kinematic characteristics of calanoid copepod appendage motion

Abstract Propulsion by copepods requires high-speed video and intensive analyses. Routine smooth swimming is compared with small relocation jumps and escape reactions, relying on kinematics analyses of appendage movement. In this study, we used high-speed video at 1200 frames per second to determine the kinematic parameters of three types of swimming in Eurytemora affinis females: routine steady swimming, small relocation jumps and escape reactions. The average speed varied in the range 0.30–0.82 cm s−1 during steady routine swimming. This value increased to 4.48 ± 1.01 cm s−1 during small relocation jumps, and reached 21.94 ± 2.68 cm s−1 during escape reactions. The small angular amplitude (40–50°) and the very high beat frequency (63–80 Hz) of the cephalic appendages during routine swimming indicate that E. affinis is a feeding-current feeder. The comparison of the angular displacements of the antennules, thoracic legs and abdomen with respect to the movement speed demonstrates that, both in the case of small relocation jumps and during escape reactions, the main propulsive role is played by the thoracic swimming legs and abdomen.

Light traps as an exploratory tool in light pollution studies: Assessment of vulnerable species and their migratory patterns

Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) is one of the most widespread stressors on coastal marine habitats. Despite their sparse use in light pollution studies, light traps are a useful methodology to explore which species are attracted by ALAN. For that purpose, we placed light traps during the day and at night in the shallow subtidal adjacent to three natural sandy shores. Additionally, to determine the origin of the catches, the sediment and the water column were also sampled in both periods by a Van Veen grab and a plankton net, respectively. Our results showed that light traps catches at night were dominated by migrant fauna, mostly amphipod crustaceans emerging from the sediment. Other species that perform diel vertical migrations, such as calanoid copepods, were also attracted. This approach may help to understand which taxa are more susceptible to ALAN in these shallow habitats.
