Self-assembly of fluorescent and magnetic Fe3O4@coordination polymer nanochains.

Fluorescent and magnetic Fe3O4@coordination polymer (Fe3O4@CP) nanochains are synthesized via a simple one-pot solvothermal reaction of magnetite (Fe3O4) and coordination polymer precursors in the presence of an external magnetic field. The shell thickness within Fe3O4@CPs was easily regulated by varying the amounts of coordination polymer precursors used during the reaction.

Direct Synthesis of PbO Nanoparticles from a Lead(II) Nanoflower Coordination Polymer Precursor: Synthesis, Crystal Structure and DFT Calculations of [Pb(pcih)N3H2O] n with the Terminal Azide Unit

The first nanoflower lead(II) coordination compound, [Pb(pcih)N3MeOH] n (1), (“pcih” is the abbreviations of 2-pyridinecarbaldehyde isonicotinoylhy-drazoneate) were synthesized by a sonochemical method. The new nano-structure was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, elemental analyses and IR spectroscopy. Single crystalline material was obtained using a heat gradient applied to a solution of the reagents. Compound 1 was structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The determination of the structure by single crystal X-ray crystallography showed that the complex taking the form of a zig-zag one dimensional polymer in the solid state and the coordination number of PbII ions is six, (PbN4O2), with three N-donor and one O-donor atoms from two “pcih” and one O-donors from methanol and one N atom from terminal azide anion. It has an asymmetrical coordination sphere. The supramolecular features in these complexes are guided and controlled by weak directional intermolecular interactions. The chains interact with each other through π–π stacking interactions creating a 3D framework. After thermolysis of 1 at 180 °C with oleic acid, pure phase nano-sized lead(II) oxide was produced. The morphology and size of the prepared PbO samples were further observed using SEM.

AbstractNanostructures of a new coordination polymer of divalent lead with the ligand 2, 9‐dimethyl‐1, 10‐phenanthroline (dmp) containing the first Pb2‐(μ‐ClO4)2 motif, [Pb2(dmp)2(μ‐N3)2(μ‐ClO4)2]n (1), was synthesized by a sonochemical method that produces the coordination polymers at nano size. The new nanostructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray powder diffraction, IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Compound 1 was structurally characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction and the single‐crystal X‐ray data shows that the coordination number of PbII ions is six, (PbN4O2), with two N‐donor atoms from aza‐aromatic base ligands and four O‐donors from two perchlorate anions and two N‐donors from two azide anions. It has a “stereo‐chemically active” electron lone pair, and the coordination sphere is hemidirected. The supramolecular features in these complexes are guided and controlled by weak directional intermolecular interactions. The chains interact with each other through π–π stacking interactions creating a 3D framework. The structure of the title complex was optimized by density functional theory calculations. Calculated structural parameters and IR spectra for the title complex are in agreement with the crystal structure. The PbO nanoparticles were obtained by thermolysis of 1 at 180 °C with oleic acid as a surfactant. The average diameter of the nanoparticles was estimated by the Scherrer equation to be 23 nm. The morphology and size of the prepared PbO samples were further observed using SEM.

Preparation of Cadmium(II) Oxide Nanoparticles from a New One-Dimensional Cadmium(II) Coordination Polymer Precursor; Spectroscopic and Thermal Analysis Studies

A one-dimensional Cd(II) coordination polymer containing 2-pyridinecarboxylate (2-pyc−) and iodide anions [Cd(μ-2-pyc)(μ-I)] n (1), is synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermal analysis and X-ray crystallography. The single-crystal X-ray data show that the coordination number for the Cd2+ ion is five. The thermal stability of 1 was studied by thermogravimetry and differential thermal analyzes. Cd(II)O nanoparticles were prepared by direct calcination of 1 at different temperatures. The Cd(II)O nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The results show that the morphology of the Cd(II)O nanoparticles is dependent upon the thermolysis temperature.

Synthesis and Characterization of Zinc(II) Oxide Nanoparticles by Thermal Decomposition of Two Zinc(II) Nitrite Coordination Polymer Precursors

Two zinc(II) coordination polymers, {[Zn(3-bpdb)(NO2)]·0.5H2O}n (1) and [Zn(4-bpdb)(NO2)2]n (2), 3-bpdb = 1,4-bis(3-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene and 4-bpdb = 1,4-bis(4-pyridyl)-2,3-diaza-1,3-butadiene}, have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses and IR spectroscopy. Nanoparticles of zinc(II) oxide have been prepared by thermolyses of two different zinc(II) coordination polymers, 1–2. The nano-materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction and IR spectroscopy. The thermal stability of ZnO nano-particles was studied by thermal gravimetric and differential thermal analysis and showed that there is no loss of weight, which indicates that the products were zinc(II) oxide. This study demonstrates the coordination polymers may be suitable precursors for the preparation of nanoscale materials.

One‐Pot Synthesis of Silica@Coordination Polymer Core–Shell Microspheres with Controlled Shell Thickness

A metal-mediated coordination polymeri-zation method is demonstrated to immobilize organic molecules onto silica particles in the form of coordination polymers. Unique silica@coordination polymer core–shell microspheres are generated, in which the shell thickness is controlled from 65 to 295 nm by varying the amount of coordination polymer precursors or silica particles.

Direct Synthesis of Cd3OSO4 Nano-particles From a New Three-dimensional Cadmium(II) Coordination Polymer Precursor

A new three-dimensional Cd(II) coordination polymer, {[Cd3(3-pyc)4(NCS)2(H2O)4]·2H2O} n (1); 3-Hpyc = 3-pyridinecarboxylic acid, was prepared and characterized by elemental analyses and IR spectroscopy. Compound 1 was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structural determination shows that the compound is a new 3D coordination polymer has different environments containing CdO5NS and CdO2N4 units. This polymeric precursor has been used in the preparation of Cd3OSO4 nanoparticles by thermolysis in oleic acid. The new nano-structure of Cd3OSO4 was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. This study demonstrates that coordination polymers may be suitable precursors to the preparation of desirable nanoscale materials.

Kinetics and mechanism of disproportionation of Mn (VI)O 42− induced by decomposition of intramanganato-polygalacturonate methyl ester coordination polymer precursor: Medium-substituent effects on reactivity

During the oxidation of polygalacturonate methyl ester polysaccharide by MnO 4 − in highly basic medium, the formation of the green polygalacturonate methyl ester (PGME-Mn (VI)O 4 2−) and the blue (PGME-Mn (V)O 4 3−) intermediates were followed spectrophotometrically. In this paper, the kinetics of the decay of the green (PGME-Mn (VI)O 4 2−) intermediate, the second stage of the oxidation process, were followed spectrophotometrically at different concentrations of NaOH and temperatures ranging from 10 to 30 °C. The decay of the green intermediate (PGME-Mn (VI)O 4 2−) follows pseudo-first-order kinetics, d[PGME-Mn (VI)O 4 2−]/d t = k obs.[PGME-Mn (VI)O 4 2−] where k obs. = k 2[OH −]. The reaction was found to be base catalyzed. The obtained linear Michaelis–Menten kinetics proves the formation of intermediates during the decay process. A reaction mechanism involving a deprotonation pre-equilibrium step followed by a rate determining decay of the deprotonated green intermediate (PGME-Mn (VI)O 4 2−) is proposed. Moreover, the activation parameters were consistent with the assumed reaction mechanism. The positive salt effect indicates the ionic character of the transient species. The decay and formation rates increase in the following order of polysaccharides: MC-Mn (VI)O 4 2− < CMC-Mn (VI)O 4 2− ≪ PGME-Mn (VI)O 4 2−.

Synthesis of PbO nano-particles from a new one-dimensional lead(II) coordination polymer precursor

A new Pb(II) one-dimensional coordination polymer, [Pb(µ-NO 2)(µ-pyc)(H 2O)] n ( 1 ), Hpyc = 2-pyridinecarboxylic acid} was prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, powder XRD diffraction and IR spectroscopy. Compound 1 was structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and one-dimensional coordination polymer with coordination environment of PbNO 6. The thermal stability of compound 1 showed that compound 1 decomposes at 110–500 °C and the final product is PbO. This polymeric precursor has been used to make PbO nano-particles using two different surfactants. The new nano-structure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. This study demonstrates that the coordination polymers may be suitable precursors for the preparation of nanoscale materials.

Top-down meets bottom-up — Electron-beam induced metalorganic deposition of amorphous iron oxide nanostructures

We present the use of a metalorganic precursor, iron(III) 2-ethylhexanoate, as a precursor for the electron-beam induced deposition of amorphous iron oxide nanostructures. Exposing this precursor to an area dose of 1.560 mC/cm2 with 10 keV electrons affords a material that can be developed and was determined to be amorphous iron oxide when examined by TEM, electron diffraction, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Single point exposure yields free-standing hollow nanorods with diameters from 85 to 255 nm controlled by the exposure dose. The patterning of sub 40 nm nanowires with low (&lt;3 nm) line edge and width roughnesses is also presented.Key words: electron beam lithography, amorphous iron oxide, nanotubes, nanowires, coordination polymer precursor.

Monodisperse, submicrometer-scale platinum colloidal spheres with high electrocatalytic activity

Monodisperse, submicrometer-scale platinum (Pt) colloidal spheres were prepared through a simple direct chemical reduction of p-phenylenediamine (PPD)-chloroplatinic acid (H 2PtCl 6) coordination polymer colloids. It was found that the prepared Pt colloids had the similar size and morphology with their coordination polymer precursors, and the prepared Pt colloids with rough surfaces were three-dimensional (3D) structured assemblies of high-density small Pt nanoparticles. The electrochemical experiments confirmed that the prepared Pt colloids possessed a high electrocatalytic activity towards mainly four-electron reduction of dioxygen to water, making the prepared Pt colloids potential candidates for the efficient cathode material in fuel cells.

A coordination polymer precursor approach to the synthesis of NiFe bimetallic nanoparticles within hybrid mesoporous silica

An approach to the synthesis and the organization of magnetic bimetallic NiFe nanoparticles of controlled size and composition was developed using thermolysis of the cyano-bridged Ni2+/[Fe(CN)6]3− coordination polymer nanoparticles anchored within a hybrid mesostructured silica either under argon or under hydrogen atmospheres. The obtained NiFe nanoparticles were studied by high resolution transmission electronic microscopy (HRTEM), nitrogen sorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements, which reveal the presence of uniform bimetallic NiFe nanoparticles inside the silica pores. The size of these nanoparticles is controlled by the pore size of the silica used and by the size of the cyano-bridged coordination polymer nanoparticles. The magnetic measurements show a superparamagnetic behaviour of the nanoparticles with a decrease of the blocking temperature as the size of the nanoparticles decreases.

In situ sol–gel synthesis and luminescence of Y xGd 2− xO 3:Eu 3+ nanophosphors by assembling hybrid polymeric precursors

Using rare earth coordination polymers with salicylic acid and rare earth nitrates as precursors for the luminescent species Y x Gd 2− x O 3:Eu 3+, composed with the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as dispersing media, nanophosphors of Y x Gd 2− x O 3:Eu 3+ with different ratio of Y and Gd were synthesized, among x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.6, 1.8 for rare earth nitrate precursors and x = 0.4, 1.0, 1.6 for rare earth salicylate coordination polymer precursors, respectively. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscope (SEM) show that these materials have the nanometer size of 20–70 nm. These nanometer materials exhibit strong emission at 612 nm and a blue shift of 6 nm compared with the bulk Y 2O 3:Eu 3+ phosphors.

Growth of well-aligned gamma-MnO2 monocrystalline nanowires through a coordination-polymer-precursor route.

A new coordination-polymer-precursor route has been developed to synthesize nanowires under hydrothermal conditions. In the present work, well-aligned gamma-MnO(2) nanowires, growing along the [0 0 2] axis, have successfully been prepared by selecting an appropriate coordination polymer [[Mn(SO(4))(4,4'-bpy)(H(2)O)(2)](n)] as precursor. In comparison with the experimental results from other coordination-polymer precursors, it is found that only [[Mn(SO(4))(4,4'-bpy)(H(2)O)(2)](n)] is appropriate for the formation of gamma-MnO(2) crystal lattices during the process of oxidization. The IR absorption spectra of as-obtained precipitates at different reaction intervals minutely describe the reaction process, due to the different coordination abilities of ligands in the coordination polymer. More evidence about the mechanism will be further explored in the future study. Further observations show the ordered alignment of nanowires' tops and such well-aligned nanowires provide more possible applications in lithium batteries.
