Unveiling the key role of metal coordination mode and ligand's side groups on the performance of deep-red light-emitting electrochemical cell

Three novel deep-red to near-infrared (DR to NIR) emitters based on mononuclear and dinuclear ruthenium(II) complexes with bulky structures were presented herein. For the first time, the unusual effects of metal coordination mode on the electroluminescence properties of a binuclear emitter were investigated. Unexpectedly, the mononuclear complexes showed superior performance in deep-red light-emitting electrochemical cells (DR-LEC) compared to the dinuclear complex. Likewise, substituting various ancillary ligands improved the radiance and lifetime of devices by 2.5 and 1.5 times, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the obtained efficiency is among the best reported to date for DR-LECs based on ruthenium polypyridyl complexes.

Electrosynthesis of Transition Metal Coordinated Polymers for Active and Stable Oxygen Evolution

Transition metal coordination polymers (TM‐CP) are promising inexpensive and flexible electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction in water electrolysis, while their facile synthesis and controllable regulation remain challenging. Here we report an anodic oxidation‐electrodeposition strategy for the growth of TM‐CP (TM = Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, Mn; CP = polyaniline, polypyrrole) films on a variety of metal substrates that act as both catalyst supports and metal ion sources. An exemplified bimetallic NiFe‐polypyrrole (NiFe‐PPy) features superior mechanical stability in friction and exhibits high activity with long‐term durability in alkaline seawater (over 2000 h) and anion exchange membrane electrolyzer devices at current density of 500 mA cm−2. Spectroscopic and microscopic analysis unravels the configurations with atomically distributed metal sites induced by d‐π conjugation, which transforms into a mosaic structure with NiFe (oxy)hydroxides embedded in PPy matrix during oxygen evolution. The superior catalytic performance is ascribed to the anchoring effect of PPy that inhibits the metal dissolution, the strong substrate‐to‐catalyst interaction that ensures good adhesion, and the Fe/Ni−N coordination that modulates the electronic structures to facilitate the deprotonation of *OOH intermediate. This work provides a general strategy and mechanistic insight into building robust inorganic/polymer composite electrodes for oxygen electrocatalysis.

Structural diversity of transition-metal coordination polymers and dinuclear metallocycles constructed by bispyridyl-substituted diphthalic diimide ligands

Four coordination polymers (CPs), namely, {[Ni(L1)2Cl2]·(CHCl3)}n(1), {[Co(L1)1.5(NO3)2]·(CHCl3)}n (2), {[Ag2(L2)2(NO3)2]·(CHCl3)}n (3), [Cd(L2)2(Cl)2]n (4), and two dinuclear metallocycles, namely, {[Zn2(L3)2(Cl)4]·2CHCl3}n (5) and [Cu2(L3)2(Cl)4] (6), (L1 = 2,2′-bis(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)-[5,5′-biisoindoline]-1,1′,3,3′-tetraone), L2 = 5,5′-oxybis(2-(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione), L3 = 5,5′-carbonylbis(2-(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)isoindoline-1,3-dione)), have been adeptly constructed using solvothermal conditions and successfully delineated by non-destructive single-crystal (X-ray) diffraction. Structural analyses provide insights into a two-dimensional (2D) 44 grid layer of complex 1 and a three-dimensional (3D) 63 network of 2. Additionally, the connection between these two complexes is established via hydrogen bonding (CH···O) to further accomplish a three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular framework system. Similarly, Complex 3 and 4 possess a one-dimensional (1D) wave-like chain and loop-like chains composed of olive-like metallacycle building units, respectively. These chains are bridged by CH···O hydrogen bond and π∙∙∙π stacking interactions to generate 3D supramolecular structure. Finally, complexes 5 and 6 occupies zero-dimensional (0D) square-like array also called as olive-like dimeric M2L2 metallacycles. The distinct structural configurations of the six complexes are in close alliance with different conformations of the N-donor pyridyl ligands and coordination arrangement of the transition metal centers.

Investigation of Doping Effects on the Local Electrochemical Activity of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides 2D Materials

AbstractFinding strategies to enhance catalysts’ electrochemical activity is based on controlling the material design. Bidimensional materials (2DM) such as MoS2 are explored as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A comprehensive study of the effects of doping 2D materials with transition metals based on theoretical predictions in tandem with experimental investigation correlates the doping type to the changes in the electronic and electrochemical activity. Localized electrochemical maps obtained by scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) reveal that Ti‐doping induces a heterogeneous increase in 2H‐MoS2 basal plane electrochemical activity, while Ni‐doping induces a homogeneous decrease. Additionally, Kelvin probe microscopy provides insight into Ti‐doping, showcasing a decline in the 2H‐MoS2 work function, therefore confirming the predictions from density functional theory simulations. In essence, the findings underscore the potential of transition metal coordination on the 2H‐MoS2 surface as an attractive method for locally doping 2D materials with minimal damage to the crystalline lattice, consequently enhancing the electrochemical activity on the material's basal plane.

Composite Eu@Cd-CP as a fluorescent probe for the detection of some food additives

A transition metal coordination polymer (CP), [Cd(Hdpcp)]n (Cd-CP) was prepared based on 3-(2,4-dicarboxyphenyl)-6-carboxypyridine ligand (H3dpcp), and then its composite Eu@Cd-CP was synthesized by the post-modification through loading Eu3+ ions on Cd-CP. Eu@Cd-CP has outstanding fluorescence stability in aqueous solution with a wide range of pH. Furthermore, Eu@Cd-CP can distinguish sodium salicylate (SS) and sodium dehydroacetate (SA) in some food additives by quenching the characteristic fluorescence of Eu3+ ion. Eu@Cd-CP is the first known CP-based fluorescent probe for selective detection of SS and SA. In addition, the fluorescence mechanisms of discerning above analytes by Eu@Cd-CP have been thoroughly evaluated. It has found that synergistic effect of the dynamic process, photoinduced electron transfer (PET) process, energy absorption competition, and formation of Eu-O bonding interactions in sensing SA lead to the fluorescence quenching of Eu@Cd-CP. The fluorescence response mechanism of Eu@Cd-CP with SA is ascribed to the combination of the dynamic process, PET process, and energy absorption competition. A series of portable devices based on Eu@Cd-CP including fluorescence test strips, lamp beads, and composite films were developed to discern SS and SA via visual changes in luminescence color. This composite material can be potentially used as a multifunctional fluorescent probe for practical applications.

Directional multiobjective optimization of metal complexes at the billion-system scale.

The discovery of transition metal complexes (TMCs) with optimal properties requires large ligand libraries and efficient multiobjective optimization algorithms. Here we provide the tmQMg-L library, containing 30k diverse and synthesizable ligands with robustly assigned charges and metal coordination modes. tmQMg-L enabled the generation of 1.37 million palladium TMCs, which were used to develop and benchmark the Pareto-Lighthouse multiobjective genetic algorithm (PL-MOGA). With fine control over aim and scope, this algorithm maximized both the polarizability and highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital gap of the TMCs within selected regions of the Pareto front, without requiring prior knowledge on the objective limits. Instead of genetic operations on small ligand fragments, the PL-MOGA did whole-ligand mutation and crossover operations, which in chemical spaces containing billions of systems, yielded thousands of highly diverse TMCs in an interpretable manner.

Ethylene/Polar Monomer Copolymerization by [N, P] Ti Complexes: Polar Copolymers with Ultrahigh-Molecular Weight.

A series of novel titanium complexes (2a-2e) bearing [N, P] aniline-chlorodiphenylphosphine ligands (1a-1e) featuring CH3 and F substituents have been synthesized and characterized. Surprisingly, in the presence of polar additive, the complexes (2a-2e) all displayed high catalytic activities (up to 1.04 × 106 gPolymer (mol·Ti)-1·h-1 and produced copolymer with the ultrahigh molecular weight up to 1.37 × 106 g/mol. The catalytic activities are significantly enhanced by introducing electron-withdrawing group (F) into the aniline aromatic ring. Especially, the increase in activity based on different complexes followed the order of 2e > 2d > 2c > 2b > 2a. Simultaneously, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed to probe the polymerization mechanism as well as the electronic and steric effects of various substituents on the catalyst backbone. DFT computation revealed that the polymerization behaviors could be adjusted by the electronic effect of ligand substituents; however, it has little to do with the steric hindrance of the substituents. Furthermore, theoretical calculation results keep well in accordance with experimental measurement results. The article provided an appealing design method that the employment of fluorine atom as electron-withdrawing to be studied is the promotive effect of transition-metal coordination polymerization.

Mn-L-based multifunctional molecular spintronic device: A first-principles investigation

A transition metal coordination complex Mn-L-based multifunctional molecular spintronic device is proposed and its spin-polarized transport properties in two magnetic configurations (parallel and anti-parallel alignments) are evaluated using the first-principles density functional theory and non-equilibrium Green’s function method. Four high-performance physical effects, including spin-filtering, spin-rectifying, giant magnetoresistance and negative differential resistance, are revealed in the proposed device. The physical mechanisms are analyzed through the spin-resolved bias-dependent transmission spectra, and projected device density of states spectra. These results demonstrate that the proposed system holds great promise in developing the multifunctional molecular spintronic devices.

Coumarin-transition metal complexes with biological activity: current trends and perspectives.

Coumarin (2H-1-benzopyran-2-one) presents the fundamental structure of an enormous class of biologically active compounds of natural, semi-synthetic, and synthetic origin. Extensive efforts are continually being put into the research and development of coumarin derivatives with medicinal properties by the broad scientific community. Transition metal coordination compounds with potential biological activity are a "hot topic" in the modern search for novel drugs. Complexation with transition metals can enhance the physiological effect of a molecule, modify its safety profile, and even imbue it with novel attributes of interest in the fields of medicine and pharmacy. The present review aims to inform the reader of the latest developments in the search for coumarin transition metal complexes with biological activity, their potential applications, and structure-activity relationships, where such can be elucidated. Each section of the present review addresses a certain kind of biological activity (antiproliferative, antioxidant, antimicrobial, etc.), explores the most recent discoveries in the field, and, at the same time, tries to offer useful perspectives for potential future investigations.

Accelerating Charge Kinetics in Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction by Modulating the Cobalt Coordination in Heterostructures of Cadmium Sulfide/Metal-Organic Layer.

Artificial photocatalytic CO2 reduction (CO2R) holds great promise to directly store solar energy into chemical bonds. The slow charge and mass transfer kinetics at the triphasic solid-liquid-gas interface calls for the rational design of heterogeneous photocatalysts concertedly boosting interfacial charge transfer, local CO2 concentration, and exposure of active sites. To meet these requirements, in this study heterostructures of CdS/MOL (MOL = metal-organic layer) furnishing different redox Co sites are fabricated for CO2R photocatalysts. It is found that the coordination environment of Co is key to photocatalytic activity. The best catalyst ensemble comprising ligand-chelated Co2+ with the bipyridine electron mediator demonstrates a high CO yield rate of 1523µmol h-1 gcat -1, selectivity of 95.8% and TON of 1462.4, which are ranked among the best seen in literature. Comprehensive photochemical and electroanalytical characterizations attribute the high CO2R performance to the improved photocarrier separation and charge kinetics originated from the proper energy band alignment and coordination chemistry. This work highlights the construction of 2D heterostructures and modulation of transition metal coordination to expedite the charge kinetics in photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Transition metal coordination polymers based on imidazole/triazole carboxylic acid ligands for efficient detection of Fe3+ ions and adsorption of dyes

Five new coordination polymers (CPs), namely [Zn(L1)2·(H2O)2]n (1), [Cd(L1)2(H2O)2]n (2), [Cd(L1)Cl]n (3), [Cu(L1)2(H2O)2]n (4) and [Cd(L2)2(H2O)2]n (5) [HL1=4-(((1H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)amino)methyl)benzoic acid, HL2=4-((4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzyl)amino)benzoic acid] based on imidazole/triazole carboxylic acid ligands were synthesized by adjusting the structure of the ligands, synthesis temperatures and solvents. CPs 1, 2, 4 and 5 display 1D chain structures with different shapes, and 3 is a 4-connected crb network structure. The fluorescence sensing properties and dye adsorption of those CPs were studied, the results showed that 1–3 can sensitively detect Fe3+ by turn-off effect and the limits of detection were 0.269, 0.024 and 0.06 μM, respectively. The study of the mechanism showed that energy transfer, competitive absorption and weak interaction are the reasons of fluorescent quenching. CP 5 exhibited adsorption performance for malachite green (MG) with adsorption capacity of 1428.6 mg g−1 and has good reusability, and the hydrogen bond and π-π interactions have been proved to be the main factors for the adsorption of MG by 5.

2-Pyridonates: a versatile ligand platform in 3d transition metal coordination chemistry and catalysis

Among the vast family of aminoalcohol ligands, 2-pyridonates take a special position. This review illustrates the intriguing properties of pyridonate ligands and their key roles in 3d transition metal catalysts from the natural role model [Fe]-hydrogenase to modern applications.

Ag-based coordination polymer-enhanced photocatalytic degradation of ciprofloxacin and nitrophenol.

Transition-metal coordination complexes have attracted wide attention in molecular chemistry, but their applications still confront a tremendous challenge. Herein, a novel silver coordination polymer with a formula of {[Ag9(TIPA)6](NO3)9·12H2O}n (Ag-TIPA) was prepared by a solvothermal reaction of silver nitrate with triangular tris(4-imidazolylphenyl)amine (TIPA). The crystalline molecular structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, which showed that each Ag(I) was coordinated with two nitrogen atoms of TIPA ligands. Such Ag-TIPA was used as a catalyst for the photodegradation of ciprofloxacin and 4-nitrophenol under UV-visible light irradiation. The results exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance and reusability due to high structure stability in an acidic, neutral and alkaline environment. The experimental findings and density functional theory calculations revealed that metal-ligand charge transfer in Ag-TIPA extended the absorption range of light and improved the charge transfer properties of TIPA. To further understand the photodegradation process, the intermediates were predicted and analysed through electrostatic potential, orbital weighted dual descriptor, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques. Based on these findings, a possible degradation mechanism was proposed. This study provides new insights into the design and synthesis of Ag-based coordination polymers with novel structures, excellent catalytic activity, and good durability.

Borataalkenes, boraalkenes, and the η2-B,C coordination mode in coordination chemistry and catalysis.

Borataalkenes and boraalkenes are the boron-containing isoelectronic analogues of alkenes and vinyl cations respectively. Compared with alkenes, the borataalkene and boraalkene ligand motifs in transition metal coordination chemistry are relatively underexplored. In this review, the synthesis of borataalkene and boraalkene complexes and other transition metal complexes featuring the η2-B,C coordination mode is described. The diversity of coordination modes and geometry in these complexes, and the spectroscopic and structural evidence supporting their assignments is disclosed as well as computational analysis of bonding. The applications of the borataalkene ligand motif in synthetic organic homogeneous catalysis, especially those involving geminal bis(pinacolatoboronates) and 1,4-azaborines, are discussed.
