Community Service Activities (PKM) have been completed to solve community problems through innovation regarding the use of used cooking oil waste as raw material for solid soap. The targets of this service activity are the people of Tualang Teungoh Village, Langsa City, Aceh, especially PKK women. The problem faced by partners is the accumulation of used cooking oil waste that cannot be utilized. Through this service activity, the community will be educated to utilize science and technology to utilize used cooking oil waste as raw material for making multi-purpose solid soap. The series of activities that will be carried out in the Service include several stages, first an initial survey is carried out regarding the problems faced by the village community, next is outreach activities, and then practical training in making multipurpose solid soap, the final stage is monitoring partners in the solid soap packaging process. A product has been obtained in the form of multi-purpose solid soap from used cooking waste which can be used for washing household equipment in everyday life. This product is expected to become one of the local products that has market opportunities thereby increasing the utilization of household waste and improving the economic level of the community.

Experimental studies of thermal behavior, engine performance and emission characteristics of biodiesel / diesel / 1 pentanol blend in diesel engine

The present study investigates the significance of the utilization of biodiesel derived from waste cooking oil in diesel engines and its impact on engine output and environmental pollution after blending with diesel and 1-pentanol. The higher values of the ignition index and comprehensive performance index of 4.34 ×10−4mass/min°C2 and 13.71×10−6 mass2/min2 °C3, respectively, for D70B20P10 (70 % diesel, 20 % biodiesel & 10 % 1-pentanol by volume) indicate superior combustion performance. At full load, carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emissions from 1-pentanol blended fuels decrease significantly, ranging from 40 % to 52 % and 30.76–46.15 % compared to diesel. The D70B20P10 also showed an improved thermal efficiency of 28.68 % among all tested fuels at full load but slightly lower than diesel (29.56 %). Diesel demonstrated superior in-cylinder pressure (ICP) of 77 bar and heat release rate (HRR) of 41.1 J/ºCA owing to its excellent combustion characteristics. Introducing 5–10 % 1-pentanol in blend improved combustion, elevating ICP and HRR, attributed to enhanced fuel atomization and oxygen content. The sustainable process index value obtained for a global index per person is 0.002×10−4cap Litre-1, which lies between 0 and 1, indicates sustainability and compatibility of biodiesel production demonstration by universal biofuels (Andhra Pradesh).

Strategies to build stronger bones in Indian children: Challenges for implementation.

Background & objectives Globally, vitamin D deficiency has been incriminated in poor bone health and growth retardation in children, impaired adult musculoskeletal health (classically described), increased risk of cardiovascular events, immune dysfunction, neurologic disorders, insulin resistance and its multiple sequelae, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and certain cancers. This review intends to holistically highlight the burden of vitamin D deficiency among children in India, the public health importance, and potential therapeutic and preventive options, utilizing the concept of implementation research. Methods A systematic search was carried out on PubMed, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Cochrane database, clinicaltrials.gov, Google Scholar, and ctri.nic.in with the keywords or MeSH terms namely 'vitamin D', 'cholecalciferol', 'ergocalciferol', 'children', connected with appropriate boolean operators. Results Vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency prevalence varies from 70-90 per cent in Indian children. Rickets, stunting, impaired bone mineral health, and dental health are common problems in these children. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) should be maintained >20 ng/ml in children. Oral vitamin D supplementation has a high therapeutic window (1200-10,000 IU/d well tolerated). Fortification of grains, cereal, milk, bread, fruit juice, yogurt, and cheese with vitamin D has been tried in different countries across the globe. From Indian perspective, fortification of food items which is virtually used by everyone would be ideal like fortified milk or cooking oil. Fortification of "laddus" made from "Bengal gram" with vitamin D as a part of a mid-day meal programme for children can be an option. Interpretation & conclusions There is enough evidence from India to suggest the importance and utility of food fortification with vitamin D to address the epidemic of vitamin D deficiency/insufficiency in children.

Waste Cooking Oil Recycling and the Potential Use of Blockchain Technology in the UK

This study explores the recycling of Waste Cooking Oil (WCO) in the UK, analysing the recycling models and practices, and investigating the application of blockchain technology (BCT) from Z company’s Southern European project to UK’s WCO recycling. Employing a multi-method qualitative approach, including unstructured and semi-structured interviews, the research delves into the experiences of current WCO recycling methods in the UK and Z company’s project. Through thematic analysis of both primary data and archival data, the study identifies seven distinct recycling models in the UK and assesses the implementation of BCT using the Technology, Organization, and Environment (TOE) framework. The research underscores the current state of WCO recycling in the UK, highlighting the industry’s challenges and providing recommendations for future implementation. Its significance lies in addressing the academic gap in WCO recycling studies and offering insights into recycling models and BCT application, potentially guiding future commercial endeavours.

The development of the automotive world to date has grown rapidly, especially two-wheeled vehicles. Large temperature changes in lubricating oil viscosity, even if the value is too low, will reduce the lubrication of engine parts, increase friction between metals, and cause engine parts to heat up quickly. Efforts to control and overcome excessive engine heat can replace mineral-based lubricating oils with environmentally friendly and biodegradable lubricating oils. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of using a mixture of cooking oil and surfactants C64H124O26 and C42H80NO8P as engine lubricants on the power and temperature produced by motorized vehicles. The independent variables of this research are RPM variation and mixture of pure cooking oil with lecithin and polysorbate surfactant (2.5%, 5%, 7.5%). The dependent variables are engine temperature and power. The control variables of this research are testing at room temperature, 4 stroke 125CC matic vehicle, and Raw Material using Palm cooking oil. The test method uses an infrared thermo gun for temperature and Dyno test for the highest power test on the type of Cooking Oil + Polyosrbate 7.5% with an average overall power of 5.872, then for the lowest temperature on the type of Cooking Oil + Polysorbate 2.5% with an average value of 86.2ºC.

A Comprehensive Approach to Biodiesel Blend Selection Using GRA-TOPSIS: A Case Study of Waste Cooking Oils in Egypt

The transition to sustainable energy sources is critical for addressing global environmental challenges. In 2017, Egypt produced about 500,000 tons of waste cooking oil from various sources including food industries, restaurants and hotels. Sadly, 90% of households choose to dispose of their used cooking oil by pouring it down the drain or into their village’s sewers instead of using proper disposal methods. The process involves converting waste cooking oil (WCO) into biodiesel.This study introduces a multi-criteria decision-making approach to identify the optimal biodiesel blend from waste cooking oils in Egypt. By leveraging the grey relational analysis (GRA) combined with the technique for order preference by similarity to the ideal solution (TOPSIS), we evaluate eight biodiesel blends (diesel, B5, B10, B20, B30, B50, B75, B100) against various performance metrics, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, particulate matter, engine power, fuel consumption, engine noise, and exhaust gas temperature. The experimental analysis used a single-cylinder, constant-speed, direct-injection eight cylinder diesel engine under varying load conditions. Our methodology involved feature engineering and model building to enhance predictive accuracy. The results demonstrated significant improvements in monitoring accuracy, with diesel, B5, and B20 emerging as the top-performing blends. Notably, the B5 blend showed the best overall performance, balancing efficiency and emissions. This study highlights the potential of integrating advanced AI-driven decision-making frameworks into biodiesel blend selection, promoting cleaner energy solutions and optimizing engine performance. Our findings underscore the substantial benefits of waste cooking oils for biodiesel production, contributing to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.

The Green Energy Effect on an HCCI Engine from Used Cooking Oil-based Biodiesel from Malaysia

Emissions from internal combustion engines (ICEs) significantly impact the environment, leading continents worldwide to work towards reducing them. The industry is increasingly leaning towards electric powertrains. However, power plants still utilize ICEs as generators, contributing to global pollution. Consequently, ICE emissions are garnering international attention. Alternatives like the Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engine and biodiesel fuels are being explored. HCCI engines have not been extensively tested with Used Cooking Oil (UCO) biodiesel. This study investigates the performance and emissions of HCCI engines using UCO-based biodiesel. This study tested an air-cooled, single-cylinder, 4-stroke diesel engine operating at 3600 rpm with a displacement of 0.219 liters. The HCCI mode was activated during preheating and run at 2700 rpm under varying biodiesel blend percentages and intake temperatures. In HCCI mode, brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) increased, peaking at a 90°C intake temperature. Diesel fuel in-cylinder pressure reached a maximum of 81 bars at 90°C, decreasing to 79 bars at 70°C. The HCCI mode resulted in lower NOx, CO, and UHC emissions. Higher biodiesel blend ratios further reduced CO emissions. Raising the intake air temperature to 90°C lowered NOx emissions by 96.66%, from 150 ppm to 5 ppm. Using green energy sources as fuel in HCCI engines significantly reduced emissions in this study, suggesting their potential as a future fuel for advanced engines.

D-shaped optical fiber-based refractometer for olive oil adulteration detection

Extra virgin olive oil is a product in great demand, due to its popularity as the healthiest cooking oil. Thanks to its popularity and high price, extra virgin olive oil is also a common target of adulterators who add other vegetable oils in order to increase the volume of the final product. This practice is specially harmful to consumers who choose olive oil due to dietary restrictions, in addition to directly affecting producers, due to unfair competition. Based on this scenario, this work presents a D-shaped optical fiber-based refractive index sensor to detect adulteration of olive oil caused by the addition of canola, corn, cotton, soybean and sunflower oils. The device fabrication and characterization processes are presented, detailing the instrumentation used and the methodology adopted during the measurements. The sensor sensitivity, measured against the added percentage of contaminants, was determined as 0.037 dB/%. The results show that the sensor is capable of detecting adulterations from additions of any combination of the five adulterants greater than 9% of the total volume.

Lubricating oil is a type of fluid needed by a machine to carry out work steps. Significant changes in the temperature of the lubricating oil viscosity until it is too low makes the engine components less lubricated, which causes the engine components to heat up quickly because the friction between the metals that occurs becomes greater. Lubricant that is of poor quality can cause deposits to appear in the engine room which results in the engine working harder. The aim can be achieved in this research by varying the lubricating oil with a mixture of Estolide and Diglyceride surfactant percentages of (2.5%, 5% and 7.5%). This test was carried out on a petrol motorbike with a combustion chamber volume of 125cc with standard conditions. The data that will be taken in this research includes engine temperature and power. The power testing method using a dynamometer and lubricant with cooking oil mixed with 7.5% estolide surfactant after heating produces an average value of 6.52 HP which has a higher average value than oil with a value of 5.37 HP

Bio-enriched composite materials derived from waste cooking oil for selective reduction of odour intensity

Currently, pathogenic microorganisms are becoming more active in public utility areas like parking lots and waste shelters due to the accumulation of organic waste. This uncontrolled waste leads to decay, altering its composition and presenting a microbiological risk to public health. Additionally, it emits unpleasant odors containing chemicals that irritate the mucous membranes, causing discomfort in the nose, throat, and eyes by stimulating the trigeminal nerve. These odors can have various negative effects on both quality of life and public health. The study investigated the physicochemical properties of oil composites enriched with natural additives and determined their effectiveness in reducing the intensity of nuisance odours. The research showed over 82% reduction in decaying meat odour and almost 65% reduction in ammonia odour. A higher impact of the given composites on reducing the odour from decaying meat than from ammonia was observed. This may be due to the biocidal properties of the additives used (turmeric, thymol, salicylic acid, hops and curly sorrel) and the higher intensity of ammonia odor compared to meat-derived odour. Despite the non-porous nature of the solids tested (with similar specific surface areas ranging from 0.66 to 0.88 m2/g), they were capable of sorbing NH3.

Analysis of a CRDI diesel engine powered by ternary fuel blends (diesel, biodiesel, and pentanol) doped with alumina nano-additives

Environmental constraints associated with fossil fuels have driven researchers to find a novel, potential and environmentally benign alternative fuel. Biodiesel, vegetable oil, and alcohol have gained rapid momentum thanks to their renewable nature and comparable energy contents in recent years. Accordingly, a Ternary fuel blend is prepared comprising three fuels namely diesel, biodiesel, and pentanol. Waste cooking oil was identified as the source for biodiesel and Pentanol was chosen among various alcohol alternatives due to improved energy density, reduced toxicity. These are endorsed to the enhancement in surface area-volume ratio of nano additives which boosts the catalytic combustion activity and also causing lesser fuel to take part in combustion for maintaining a constant engine speed. The experimentation is done with ternaryfuel blends with varying pentanol and biodiesel concentrations of diesel, biodiesel and pentanol). Upon experimentation, it was observed that, ternary fuel blend ‘TF’ comprising 70% diesel, 20% biodiesel and 10% pentanol, yielded best performance and was used for doping of Alumina oxide (Al2O3) nano additives. The Al2O3 nanoparticles were doped with ternary blends at fractions of 10 ppm, 20 ppm, and 30 ppm. It was observed that 20 ppm Al2O3 nanoparticle blended TF blend improved BTE and lowered BSFC by about 12.01% and 22.57% respectively. The performance tremendously along with lowered the CO emission by 49.21%, HC emission by 18.91% and smoke opacity by 9.02%.

The increase in cooking oil as a staple food is certainly detrimental to consumers, especially consumers from the lower middle class, after the problem of scarcity of cooking oil occurred in Indonesia and various policies to adjust the price of cooking oil carried out by the government, provide evidence that the urgency of the price of cooking oil has an impact on society. This research aims to find out and explain the causes of the increase in cooking oil prices carried out by shop entrepreneurs in West Sabu sub-district, Sabu Raijua Regency. The research method used is that this research is included in empirical legal research, namely a legal research method that attempts to see the law in a real sense or can be said to see, examine how law works in society, which then uses a research approach, a qualitative type of approach. The research results show that legal protection for consumers can be carried out by resolving disputes in court and outside of court. Every consumer who is harmed can sue business actors through institutions tasked with resolving disputes between consumers and business actors or through courts within the general court environment and the government also plays an important role in efforts to protect consumers legally. The form of consumer protection provided is by issuing laws and government regulations, where the implementation of statutory regulations is then carried out by supervising the implementation of these regulationsto be able to socialize it to the public and there is also a need for supervision carried out by the government on business actors.

The effect of used cooking oil composition on the specific CO2e emissions embodied in HEFA‐SPK production

AbstractIn this study, the correlation between the composition, hydrogen/carbon (H/C) ratio, and hydrogen/oxygen (H/O) ratio of a used cooking oil (UCO) and the specific emissions embodied in the derived hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids synthetic paraffinic kerosene (HEFA‐SPK) is investigated. It is shown that HEFA‐SPK produced from UCOs with low concentrations of C18:1, high concentrations of C18:2, and low H/C ratios utilize less energy and more hydrogen during Fuel Production. Hence, HEFA‐SPK produced from such UCOs will embody higher gCO2e for fossil hydrogen utilization scenarios, and lower gCO2e for green hydrogen utilization scenarios compared with other UCOs. Conversely, it is shown that HEFA‐SPK produced from UCOs with high concentrations of C18:1, low concentrations of C18:2 and high H/C ratios utilize more energy and less hydrogen during Fuel Production. Hence, HEFA‐SPK derived from such UCOs will embody lower gCO2e for fossil hydrogen utilization scenarios, and higher gCO2e for green hydrogen utilization scenarios compared with other UCOs. Monte Carlo simulation gives the emissions embodied in Fuel Production a 95% confidence interval for all UCO‐derived HEFA‐SPK, showing a similar uncertainty for all compositions. A maximum of +1.1 gCO2e/MJSAF and −1.0 gCO2e/MJSAF is obtained for the upper and lower bounds respectively for the emissions embodied during HEFA‐SPK production from UCO. The application of the correlations founded in this study allows for the prediction of the specific emissions embodied in the feedstock‐to‐fuel conversion of any UCO, providing the C18:1 concentration, C18:2 concentration, H/C ratio and H/O ratio of the UCO is known.

Analysis of the Quality of Fresh and Used Cooking Oil Among Fried Catfish Street Vendors in the Eastern Region of Lamongan Sub-District, Lamongan District

Cooking oil that is repeatedly used by vendors can cause damage and a decline in quality. Moreover, it can pose health risks. Repeated use of cooking oil leads to various degradation reactions such as oxidation, hydrolysis, and polymerization. This research aims to analyze the quality differences between initial and used cooking oil. The study is a survey with a cross-sectional study method. The sampling technique used purposive sampling (13 vendors) with data analysis using a paired t-test at a 5% significance level. Cooking oil samples were taken twice a day. The chemical quality analysis results of 13 initial cooking oil samples showed that the percentage that did not meet SNI 7709:2019 standards for water content was 46.15%, free fatty acids were 46.15%, and peroxide values were 69.23%. For used cooking oil samples, the percentages that did not meet SNI 7709:2019 standards for water content were 92.30%, free fatty acids were 100%, and peroxide values were 100%. The average TBA value for all initial-use cooking oil samples was 0.44 mg MDA/kg, and for used cooking oil samples was 0.65 mg MDA/kg, both higher than the reference sample (0.15 mg MDA/kg).. The t-test results showed that there were quality differences between the initial and used cooking oil used by street vendors selling pecel lele in the eastern region of Lamongan District.

Multiple-heated cooking oil promotes early hepatic and renal senescence in adult male rats: the potential regenerative capacity of oleuropein

For economic purposes, cooking oil is repeatedly heated in food preparation, which imposes serious health threats. This study investigated the detrimental effects of multiple-heated cooking oil (MHO) on hepatic and renal tissues with particular focusing on cellular senescence (CS), and the potential regenerative capacity of oleuropein (OLE). Adult male rats were fed MHO-enriched diet for 8 weeks and OLE (50 mg/kg, PO) was administered daily for the last four weeks. Liver and kidney functions and oxidative stress markers were measured. Cell cycle markers p53, p21, cyclin D, and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were evaluated in hepatic and renal tissues. Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and Bax were assessed by immunohistochemistry. General histology and collagen deposition were also examined. MHO disturbed hepatic and renal structures and functions. MHO-fed rats showed increased oxidative stress, TNF-α, Bax, and fibrosis in liver and kidney tissues. MHO also enhanced the renal and hepatic expression of p53, p21, cyclin D and PCNA. On the contrary, OLE mitigated MHO-induced oxidative stress, inflammatory burden, apoptotic and fibrotic changes. OLE also suppressed CS and preserved kidney and liver functions. Collectively, OLE displays marked regenerative capacity against MHO-induced hepatic and renal CS, via its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.
