Pemanfaatan Minyak Jelantah sebagai Bahan Dasar Pembuatan Lilin Aromaterapi di Panti Asuhan Vallery

Indonesia is one of the largest consumers of cooking oil in the world. Cooking oil functions to conduct heat in frying food. Used cooking oil or used cooking oil can be used and utilized. Disposal of used cooking oil can also cause environmental damage. Therefore, we need to be able to utilize used cooking oil into something that has economic value for society. This program is implemented to educate children at the Vallery orphanage so they can make an innovative aromatherapy candle product using used cooking oil. This activity aims to provide understanding to the children of the Vallery Orphanage as partners in the use of used cooking oil as an ingredient for making aromatherapy candles. This aromatherapy candle can provide a step that can potentially be developed as an alternative income for nursing home managers because it has economic value. This program is implemented as a real action from the leadership project course which aims to train the ability of PPG Pre-service students to lead through service learning activities or the ability to serve the community or society. Through this program, students are expected to be able to contribute to solving problems that exist in society. The implementation method for this activity is socialization by means of a presentation and followed by training in making aromatherapy candles made from used cooking oil.

Pelatihan Pemanfaatan Minyak Jelantah Menjadi Lilin Aromaterapi

This training aims to provide knowledge and skills to participants in processing used cooking oil into aromatherapy candles, as an effort to utilize household waste that is economically valuable and environmentally friendly. Used cooking oil, which is generally thrown away and can pollute the environment, can be processed into aromatherapy candles which have added value. This training includes material on basic techniques for processing used cooking oil, selecting aromatherapy ingredients, and the process of making candles until the product is ready for use. With this training, it is hoped that participants will be able to utilize used cooking oil waste creatively and productively, as well as opening up new business opportunities in the field of environmentally friendly products. The results of the training show that participants can easily understand and apply the knowledge provided, and produce quality aromatherapy candles that are ready to be marketed.

CCD-RSM optimization of biodiesel production from waste cooking oil using Angulyagra oxytropis and Bellamya crassa snail shell-based heterogeneous catalysts

In the present study, labuk tharoi (Angulyagra oxytropis), and ningkhabi tharoi (Bellamya crassa) were utilized to produce CaO catalyst for biodiesel production using waste cooking oil (WCO). The snail shells were calcined at a temperature of 800−1000℃ for 4 h and characterized using XRD, FTIR, BET, SEM, and EDX analysis. Central composite design-response surface methodology (CCD-RSM) was employed, and the input parameters considered for optimization were (i) catalyst calcination temperature (800−1000℃), (ii) methanol: oil ratio (molar) (6:1−12:1), (iii) catalyst loading (3−7 wt.%), and (iv) reaction temperature (55−75℃). A quadratic regression model was aliased by CCD-RSM with R2 values of 0.9291 and 0.976 for waste cooking oil methyl ester-labuk tharoi (WCOME-LT), and waste cooking oil methyl ester-ningkhabi tharoi (WCOME-NT) models indicating a good fit. An optimum biodiesel yield of (95.87, 95.91 %) was obtained at catalyst calcination temperature (891, 886℃), methanol to oil molar ratio (9.89:1, 9.67:1), catalyst loading weight % (7, 7 wt.%), and reaction temperature (75, 75℃) for WCOME-LT and WCOME-NT model respectively. The calcination temperature has a major impact on the biodiesel yield as per analysis of variance. The catalyst reusability was up to four cycles with a biodiesel yield of more than 83 %.

Smoke Points: A Crucial Factor in Cooking Oil Selection for Public Health

: Cooking oils and fats play a significant role in our daily diet and culinary practices by enhancing flavours, textures, and nutritional value. However, overheating these fats can compromise the quality and safety of cooked foods. When oils and fats exceed their smoke points, they undergo chemical breakdown, producing volatile compounds, off-flavours, and undesirable odors, including harmful substances like small chain fatty acids, trans fats, acrylamides, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. It is crucial to avoid overheating oils to mitigate the formation of these toxic substances and instead opt for those with higher smoke points for high-temperature cooking methods. The smoke point, indicating the temperature at which visible smoke is emitted, serves as a critical indicator of thermal stability and suitability for various cooking oils and fats. Therefore, understanding and considering the smoke points of different oils and fats are essential for maintaining food quality and safety in culinary practices. This review consolidates existing knowledge on the smoke points of various oils and fats and methods for determining smoke points, providing a list of fifty-one oils and fats with their respective smoke points and highlighting their applications in cooking. By considering the smoke point, chefs, cooks, and food manufacturers can select oils that optimize cooking, frying, taste, texture, flavour enhancement, salad dressings, marinades, baking, and overall safety in their culinary practices. Mindfulness of the smoke point helps prevent the degradation of nutritional value and the generation of harmful compounds during the cooking process.

Used Cooking Oil Methyl Esther (UCOME) Production on a Pilot Scale in Bali Island, Indonesia, and Its Utilization as a Component Blending for Bio-Marine Fuel Oil

Abstract Indonesia aims to achieve a New & Renewable Energy mix of 23% by 2025, so it is necessary to have policies related to the use of complementary feedstocks in the biofuel development program in Indonesia. Used Cooking Oil (UCO) is a domestic waste with the potential to be utilized as a complementary feedstock due to its abundant availability and almost zero carbon emission. However, to assess the sustainability of UCO utilization, especially as a component blending for Bio-Marine Fuel Oil, it is necessary to identify UCO characteristics and quality of its product, called as UCOME, also the production cost impact. The 10,000 liters of UCO used as feed in the pilot-scale UCOME production came from the household sector and HoReCa (Hotels, Restaurants, and Cafes). It was found that UCO had water content and %FFA ranging from 1421.03 - 1666.74 ppm and 1.7 - 15.9%. Furthermore, the UCOME produced has characteristics that comply with the standard of Marine Fuel Oil (MFO) ISO 8217 and SNI 7182 and has a price in the range of Rp.17,000 - 18,000. The results revealed that the UCO has the potential to be a feedstock for producing UCOME as a blending component for Bio-Marine Fuel Oil.

Pseudomonas rhizophila S211 as a microbial cell factory for direct bioconversion of waste cooking oil into medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates.

The present study examines the use of waste cooking oil (WCO) as a substrate for medium-chain-length polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHA) production by Pseudomonas rhizophila S211. The genome analysis revealed that the S211 strain has a mcl-PHA cluster (phaC1ZC2DFI) encoding two class II PHA synthases (PhaC1 and PhaC2) separated by a PHA depolymerase (PhaZ), a transcriptional activator (PhaD) and two phasin-like proteins (PhaFI). Genomic annotation also identified a gene encoding family I.3 lipase that was able to hydrolyze plant oils and generate fatty acids as favorable carbon sources for cell growth and PHA synthesis via β-oxidation pathway. Using a three-variable Doehlert experimental design, the optimum conditions for mcl-PHA accumulation were achieved in 10% of WCO-based medium with an inoculum size of 10% and an incubation period of 48h at 30°C. The experimental yield of PHA from WCO was 1.8g/L close to the predicted yield of 1.68 ± 0.14g/L. Moreover, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy analysis confirmed the extracted mcl-PHA. Overall, this study describes P. rhizophila as a cell factory for biosynthesis of biodegradable plastics and proposes green and efficient approach to cooking oil waste management by decreasing the cost of mcl-PHA production, which can help reduce the dependence on petroleum-based plastics.

Assessment of performance and emission characteristics of CI engine using tyre pyrolysis oil and biodiesel blends by nano additives: An experimental study

In the current study, the diesel engine performance, emission, and combustion have been investigated using tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO) and biodiesel blended with nano-additives. The effect of the blending ratio on fuel combustion and emission was evaluated. The tyre pyrolysis oil was derived from scrap tyres through the pyrolysis process and biodiesel was synthesized from used cooking oil (UCO) through the transesterification process. Moringa oleifera-derived strontium oxide (SrO) nanoparticles were mixed into the fuel to provide extra oxygen for better combustion. Three blended fuels were formulated as: a) 5 % biodiesel and 95 % TPO containing 50 ppm SrO nanoparticles (B5TPO95SrO50), b) 10 % biodiesel and 90 % TPO containing 100 ppm SrO nanoparticles (B10TPO90SrO100), c) 50 % TPO and 50 % biodiesel without nano-additives (B50TPO50). Among the blended fuels, B10TPO90SrO100 showed the best brake thermal efficiency at 31.4 % and a brake-specific fuel consumption of 0.21 kg/kWh at full load. The B5TPO95SrO50 blended fuel showed reduced emission parameters such as unburned hydrocarbon (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxides of nitrogen (NOx) by 2.05 %, 8.30 %, and 18.00 %, respectively, as compared to the conventional diesel engine at an optimum engine load (27.9 Nm). Hence, waste tyre oil and UCO biodiesel blended with biogenic SrO nano additive can be considered a promising fuel for a sustainable environment.

Response optimisation of TiO2-supported bimetallic NiCo catalyst for the cracking and deoxygenation of waste cooking oil into jet-fuel range hydrocarbon fuels under non-hydrogen environment

Waste cooking oil is a sustainable feedstock that can be utilised to produce biojet fuel via the hydrodeoxygenation process. However, the need for hydrogen for the hydrodeoxygenation process incurs high cost. In the present work, a type of bimetallic catalyst that can deoxygenate and selectively crack free fatty acids under hydrogen-free conditions was developed. The NiCo/TiO2 catalyst was prepared via the impregnation of varying amounts of Ni and Co salts onto TiO2. Optimisation of the production conditions was performed via response surface methodology based on the Box-Behnken experimental design to maximise the deoxygenation and biojet fuel yield. A maximum deoxygenation yield of 83.13 % with 44.5 % biojet fuel selectivity was obtained from the experiment and optimisation based on Box-Behnken design (R2 > 0.9). Incorporation of Ni and Co onto TiO2 reduced the surface area of the catalyst, but active metal dispersion significantly improved the deoxygenation performance and biojet fuel selectivity. The viscosity, flash point, freezing point and net heat of combustion value of the liquid product were within the jet fuel standard specifications. Overall, the study shows the potential of bimetallic NiCo/TiO2 catalyst in waste cooking oil deoxygenation for biojet fuel production.

Ethion food poisoning outbreak in Pereira, Colombia, 2022

Introduction Ethion is an organophosphate used as an acaricide and insecticide, that is restricted worldwide. In Colombia, pesticide poisoning is the third most common cause of chemical intoxication. On 9 October 2022, an outbreak of ethion poisoning occurred in Pereira. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the outbreak. Methods This is a descriptive study of an outbreak of organophosphate poisoning. The onset of symptoms occurred on 9 October 2022, following the consumption of empanadas. Information was collected on sociodemographic characteristics and clinical manifestations, as well as from paraclinical examinations. Data were obtained from clinical histories, field epidemiological investigations, and inspection visits. Food samples were collected for analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Attack rates, proportions, and measures of central tendency, dispersion, and position were calculated. Results The case definition was met by 37 individuals with a median age of 30 years; all presented with muscarinic symptoms, 29 patients presented with nicotinic symptoms, and 20 patients presented with neurological symptoms. Males were the most affected (57%), and the most common time of symptom onset was 10:00 am. Twenty-three patients (62%) required intensive care unit admission, of whom 14 (38%) required mechanical ventilation. No deaths were reported. Erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase activity was reduced in all patients. Ethion was detected in mass-prepared maize and empanadas at concentrations greater than 0.1 mg/kg. The consumption of empanadas was identified as the common source. Discussion In Colombia, pesticide poisonings are the third most common type of poisoning caused by chemical substances reported to the National Health Institute through the National Public Health Surveillance System. In the present outbreak, ethion was in empanadas, likely due to contamination of cooking oil. Conclusions We describe a large ethion-contaminated food poisoning outbreak reported in Colombia. The main symptoms were muscarinic, and the main treatment measures employed were atropine and respiratory support. Increased awareness of pesticide poisoning and training for food handlers are needed.

Experimental investigation of performance, emission, and combustion characteristics of a diesel engine using blends of waste cooking oil-ethanol biodiesel with MWCNT nanoparticles

In this study, blends of 5 % and 10 % ethanol with waste cooking oil biodiesel are mixed with Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNT) at a concentration of 30 ppm. MWCNTs, known for their high surface area and unique properties, are added to potentially enhance combustion efficiency and reduce emissions. These blends are then tested in a diesel engine to evaluate their performance, emission and combustion characteristics using Design of experiment technique. After conducting various experiments and analyses, the blend of 20 % biodiesel, 10 % ethanol, and 30 ppm MWCNT was identified as the most optimal due to its favorable engine characteristics. Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE) was increased from 3.1 % to 3.4 % with the addition of MWCNTs, indicating enhanced fuel efficiency. Moreover, average Fuel Consumption is decreased from 2.2 % to 2.5 %, suggesting improved fuel utilization. Using MWCNT 30 ppm in B20 ethanol blends (MWCNT 30 ppm B20+E10) resulted in 35 % reduction in nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, 37 % reduction in CO emissions and 39 % reduction in HC emissions. Hence MWCNTs demonstrated effectiveness in mitigating harmful exhaust emissions The optimized values for all parameters fall within acceptable ranges, indicated successful optimization using Response surface methodology. Additionally, statistical analysis reveals that the machine learning- XGBoost model outperformed all other advanced machine learning models across all tested metrics, including MSE, MAE, and R-square.

Development of Free Fatty Acid (FFA) monitoring device for evaluation of oil samples used for biodiesel production

Diversion of oil sources for biodiesel production has been gaining importance to meet the environmental concerns and energy demand. The free fatty acid (FFA) content of the feedstock is a significant factor in biodiesel production. The FFA values determine the complexity of the biodiesel production. Until date, an experimental procedure has been used to determine the FFA concentration of an oil source; this method is dependent on titration, which is a laborious process involving significant volumes of chemicals. Hence, in the present study, an attempt was made to develop a device for the identification of FFA of the oils. Waste cooking oil samples subjected to wide range of cooking conditions like cooking time, temperature, type of food are collected from different food outlets. Subsequently, the composition of oil samples and the variation in their quality were analysed using gas chromatography flame ionization detector (GC – FID). Biodiesel is prepared from the oil samples through transesterification and the impact of FFA and their respective methyl esters in the quality and properties have been investigated. The properties of biodiesel were determined as per ASTM standards. The study was further extended to correlate the properties of biodiesel with the composition of the oil from which it was derived. The analysis evidently proved the dependence of biodiesel properties on the FFA percentage and the composition of the oil. The results have been further substantiated with the performance and emission characteristics of internal combustion engine fuelled with the prepared biodiesel samples.

Market dominance also includes activities that limit the circulation and/or sale of goods and/or services in the relevant market. Related to these activities, these are activities that fall into the category prohibited by law, more precisely activities prohibited by Law Number 5 of 1999 concerning the Prohibition of Monopolistic Practices and Unfair Business Competition. This happened in the case of cooking oil in Indonesia, which in 2021 experienced a shortage. In the decision of the KPPU Panel of Judges, out of 27 Reported Parties, only 7 reported parties were proven legally and convincingly to have committed violations according to Article 19 letter c. The approach used is the rule of reason and an important part to handle the existence of elements of activities to limit the circulation and/or sale of goods and/or services in the relevant market. Restrictions on the circulation/sale of goods in this case cooking oil which causes a shortage are very detrimental to the community. The importance of law enforcement, therefore the KPPU has determined that a law enforcement process will be carried out after evidence of alleged violations of Law Number 5 of 1999 is found

Performance of Hydrothermally Prepared NiMo Dispersed on Sulfated Zirconia Nano-Catalyst in The Conversion of Used Palm Cooking Oil into Jet Fuel Range Bio-Hydrocarbons

Human efforts to overcome environmental problems from using fossil fuels continue, such as hydroconversion of biomass into bio-jet fuel. Research on producing a jet fuel range of bio-hydrocarbons from used palm cooking oil catalyzed by sulfated zirconia impregnated with nickel-molybdenum bimetal has been successfully conducted. The hydrothermal method synthesized the nano-catalyst material in the sulfation and impregnation processes. The hydroconversion process was carried out at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 300–600 °C for 2 h with a hydrogen gas flow rate of 20 mL/min and a catalyst-to-feed ratio of 1:100 (wt%). Compared with zirconia and sulfated zirconia, NiMo-impregnated sulfated zirconia showed the best activity and selectivity in bio-jet fuel production with liquid product and selectivity of 61.07% and 43.49%, respectively. This catalyst also performed well in three consecutive runs, with bio-jet fuel selectivity in the second and third runs of 51.68% and 30.86%, respectively. Sustainable Biodiesel Production from Waste Cooking Oil and Crude Palm Oil Using a Custom Mini Pilot Plant

The widespread practice of reusing Waste Cooking Oil (WCO) in hawker food stalls, often for multiple frying cycles, presents a significant public health concern due to the degradation of the oil, which can lead to the formation of toxic compounds. These practices not only pose health risks, such as increasing the potential for cardiovascular diseases and cancer, but also contribute to environmental pollution when the oil is improperly disposed of. This study seeks to address these issues by converting WCO, along with crude palm oil (CPO), into biodiesel using a custom-designed mini pilot plant. The biodiesel production process involved a two-step reaction. The first step, esterification, was conducted using a 55:100 alcohol-to-oil volume ratio with 1% by volume sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) as the acid catalyst, at 60°C, with a reaction time of 30 minutes and a stirring speed of 800 rpm. The second step, transesterification, utilized a 6:1 alcohol-to-oil molar ratio, with 1 wt.% sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as the alkaline catalyst, carried out at 70°C over the course of one hour. These conditions were carefully selected to optimize the conversion efficiency and to minimize the free fatty acid content, which is crucial for achieving a high yield of biodiesel. The results demonstrated that the mini pilot plant is highly effective in producing biodiesel from both WCO and CPO. The study also led to the development of a standard operating procedure (SOP) for the biodiesel production process, ensuring reproducibility and efficiency.

Cavitation-assisted synthesis and chracterization of a novel catalyst from waste coconut trunk biomass for biodiesel production

In the current study, a novel heterogeneous catalyst has been prepared from waste coconut trunk biomass using an ultrasound-assisted batch reactor. It is observed from the characterization studies that the raw coconut trunk biomass consists of the maximum amount of silicon dioxide (SiO2) present in it which is further converted to mullite (composition of 3Al2O3.2SiO2) with a composition of 94.18 % (analyzed through Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDAX) studies) is formed through the reaction in an ultrasound reactor processed at a very mild reaction temperature and reaction time 80℃ and 90mins. Synthesis of catalyst at mild process conditions will help to enhance the formation of energy-intensive products at a low cost. It is also observed from the XRD studies of raw feedstock and synthesized catalyst a change in the crystalline structure from hexagonal silicon dioxide to orthorhombic mullite shape. In comparison with the surface area of the raw biomass and mullite, a large amount of surface area ∼ 32 m2/g is observed which is due to the process of reaction in a highly intense ultrasound reactor. A change in the morphological structure of raw feedstock and synthesized catalyst is also observed through scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis. The activity of the synthesized catalyst has been analyzed through its application in the production of biodiesel from waste cooking oil is also studied., and a yield of 75 % with a conversion of 74 % is observed at process conditions of 1:3 (oil: ethanol) (volumetric ratio), 3 (wt%) of catalyst concentration and 3hrs of reaction time. A prospective aspect of the implication of the entire work to analyze the life cycle analysis (LCA) is also reported in terms of environmental friendliness and sustainability.

Enzymatic Transesterification Using Different Immobilized Lipases and its Biodiesel Effect on Gas Emission

Biodiesel, a third-generation bio-fuels, offering several advantages over regular diesel fuel. Waste cooking oil (WCO) emerges as an ideal feedstock due to its availability and easy accessibility. In this work, biodiesel is utilized from two different types of immobilized lipases: Rhizomucor miehei lipase (RMIM) and Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB). The impact of the molar ratio of oil to methyl acetate (1:3-1:12) was evaluated for both lipases, and the resultant biodiesel was tested in diesel engine. The enzymatic transesterification was carried out in ultrasonic assistance and the results showed that the greatest yield of 81.20% at 45℃, using CALB as a biocatalyst, 1.8% (w/v) lipase and oil to methyl acetate molar ratio of 1:12 within 3 hours. Triacetin, by-product was determined their concentration for each molar ratio and analyzed using FTIR range of 500cm-1 to 4000cm-1, revealing a significant absorption peak at 1238.90cm-1. Biodiesel was blended with commercial diesel fuel in varying quantities of 7, 10, and 20% by volume (B20). The results were compared to Industrial Diesel Fuel 7% (B7) and Commercial Diesel Fuel 10% (B10). NOx and CO2 emission drops as the percentage of diesel/biodiesel blends increases, supporting WCO as a cost-effective biodiesel feedstock with low petrol pollution.

Analysis of Consumer Decision Factors on Purchasing Packaged Cooking Oil at Simpang Limun Market, Medan

The objective of this investigation is to examine the factors that influence consumer decisions regarding the acquisition of packaged heating oil. This research employs an explanatory research approach using a quantitative methodology. A sample of 96 respondents was selected using a non-probability sampling technique from the study population, which consists of all consumers of packaged cooking oil at Simpang Limun Market in Medan. We obtained primary data by administering a questionnaire that employed a Likert scale. We employed SPSS Version 21 to conduct data analysis using multiple linear regression. The study’s findings indicated that cultural, social, personal, and psychological factors significantly influenced purchasing decisions. Cultural factors partially suggest that consumers’ cultural values and practices influence their product purchasing decisions. Additionally, social factors demonstrate the influence of family, acquaintances, and the social environment on consumer decisions. Additionally, personal factors, including age, lifestyle, and purchasing power, influence consumers’ purchasing decisions. Purchasing decisions are also influenced by psychological factors, including motivation, beliefs, and product assessments, which have a positive and significant effect. At the same time, the four independent variables have a positive and significant impact on purchasing decisions, suggesting that the confluence of these factors influences consumer decision-making when selecting products.
