Dramaturgical Analysis of Smiles in Intercultural Communication Between Korean Students and Native English Speakers

abstract: This study analyzes the use of a smile exposed by those who speak English as a second language when they communicate with native English speakers. Based on Erving Goffman's dramaturgy perspective, this study specifically investigates communication between Korean students at three U.S. universities and native English speakers. Based on interviews with 48 Korean students, this study reveals the underlying structure of their impression management, which articulated the use of smiling in intercultural communication. The discussion includes theoretical analyses of the smiles displayed by second-language users, along with the implications of smiles that can be interpreted differently in different situations. This study will contribute not only to studies dealing with intercultural communication among people with different native languages but also to the theoretical expansion of dramaturgy to the intercultural and international communication context.

Interculturality and decision making: Pursuing jointness in online teams

Abstract Current times call for continuous communication across countries, negotiations on several levels, and the creation of international relationships based on dialogue and participation. Those ideals are often pursued in intercultural communication contexts and written about, as a desideratum, in the Intercultural Communication literature. However, how can this be achieved concretely? In this article, we analyze how decisions are taken by newly founded intercultural teams of higher-education students playing a so-called intercultural game online via Zoom. The game revolves around the creation of a development plan for a fictitious city. In our study, we conducted a conversation-analytic investigation of decision-making processes by players oriented towards the ideal of ‘intercultural speakers’ as the ones mediating between different points of view and giving voice to all parties in an inclusive way. We illustrate our analysis with examples that range from unilateral decision making to decisions achieved through highly collaborative processes. We point to how expectations of inclusion-oriented interactional moves in intercultural situations are sometimes at odds with how these interactions and the related decision-making processes actually unfold.

METHOD OF TEACHING VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL CODES OF ADVERTISING DISCOURSE IN THE CROSS-CULTURAL CONTEXT

This article considers the problem of the methodology for training student majoring in advertisement in the context of the interculturalization of the advertising market. The modern world is an environment where different cultures are clashing and mixing constantly. Geopolitical or economic ties intricately link all nations and communities. Furthermore, this dynamic is intertwined with advertising, a phenomenon crafted as a part globalization. In this context, a country promotes its commodities to others, ventures into the global market, and engages in the import and export of its products. This underscores the practical significance of the research. Additionally, there is a discernible inclination towards creating advertisements for foreign products in alignment with the cultural nuances of the target audience. Both verbal and non-verbal elements of the local culture are used. Therefore, there is a need to modernize and modify student learning. To meet this need, the article proposes a model of teaching the verbal and non-verbal code of advertising discourse within the context of intercultural communication. The model focused on four-level qualitative indicators, contributed to the improvement of students' abilities to create advertising in the context of intercultural communication. The results of the study showed the specifics of students' language training, the importance of the ability to correctly use national cultural qualities, linguistic reality, mentality and acquired knowledge to create a successful and effective advertising company on the world market.

Interpersonal strategies in international business emails: The intercultural pragmatics perspective

Abstract Business email has a significant impact on commercial activities and organizational image. Intercultural pragmatics is the new development of pragmatics, moving its focus from mono-cultural communication to multi-cultural communication, aiming to describe how communicators seek, activate, and create common ground to complete tasks in intercultural communication contexts. Drawing on 1,477 separate English emails exchanged between a Chinese auto parts export company and its business partners in different parts of the world, we find, from the intercultural pragmatics perspective, that different types of interpersonal strategies, i.e., alliance building, other-caring, and self-enhancing/defending, are employed to construct virtual intimacy and to create and highlight interpersonal relationship dimensions in international business communication. These strategies are intended to facilitate the accomplishment of communication tasks by creating emergent common ground, reflecting the dynamics and interculturality of business communication. This research deepens our understanding of the mechanism of relationship management in international business communication.

Pura Dalem Betawi: Harmonisasi Komunikasi Antarbudaya Dalam Ikatan Menyamabraya Hindu dan Budha

Pura Dalem Betawi is located in Banjar Jumpayah, Mengwitani Village, Mengwi Subdistrict, Badung Regency, Bali Province, belonging to the concept of siwa-buddha. The uniqueness of Pura Dalem Betawi is the palinggih Gedong Buddha Dewi Kwan Im, and its piodalan coincides with Chinese New Year. The community as the temple caretakers call it Chinese New Year piodalan. Intercultural interaction occurs at Pura Dalem Betawi, because the Chinese New Year piodalan is attended by Chinese people. The purpose of this research emphasizes the context of intercultural communication, namely to bridge the process of community interaction in ethnic, religious and racial differences, so that social conflict does not arise. The research used a qualitative-interpretative approach with the intention of exploring information that describes the existence of the research location, based on community experience and describing it in scientific work. Determination of informants using purposive sampling technique, with the consideration that the informants know and understand the research topic, such as: pemangku, pengempon temple, religious leaders, and temple pengayah from Chinese residents. The data analysis technique uses the Miles and Huberman model, resulting in a picture that intercultural communication has a very important role in the process of social interaction in Pura Dalem Betawi. The intercultural communication approaches applied are: social psychological, intercreative, and cultural dialogic approaches. Humans develop understanding through their mindset, and gain new knowledge through interaction so that they can interpret it to form perceptions. The intercultural communication approach is combined with the concept of menyamabraya that has been inherent in Balinese life. Menyamabraya is ideal, because it views all humans as brothers, so menyamabraya is applied in intercultural interactions at Pura Dalem Betawi when ngayah prepares for the Chinese New Year piodalan. Cultural acculturation in Pura Dalem Betawi runs harmoniously and in line with religious moderation, because it has the same goal in maintaining harmony.

A flow that comes when we’re talking: water metaphors for exploring intercultural communication during early childhood assessment interactions in a Yolŋu (First Nations Australian) community

ABSTRACT Culture mediates how all people think and communicate and intercultural communication skills are required for effective collaboration. This study (2017–2021) explored intercultural communication with 40 participants in one very remote First Nations Australian community in Northern Australia. We explored the perspectives of both Yolŋu (First Nations Australian people from North-East Arnhem Land) and Balanda (non-Indigenous people, in this case Australian) on interactions during early childhood assessments of Yolŋu children (0–6 years). Our intercultural research team used a culturally responsive form of video-reflexive ethnography, a Yolŋu approach to in-depth discussion and collaborative analysis. In this article, we explore nine intercultural communication processes that were recognized and enacted by study participants. Each process is represented by a metaphor drawn from water traveling in North-East Arnhem Land. We share these processes so that others may consider exploring their relevance in other intercultural communication contexts.

The present article highlights the significance of comprehending the context of intercultural communication to surmount cultural and religious disparities in Indonesia. Enhancing comprehension of cultural and religious disparities, mitigating conflict and misinterpretation, and fostering amicability, acceptance, and multiplicity within society are potential benefits of this approach. This article endeavours to examine the intercultural communication dynamics in Indonesia, encompassing various topics such as the challenges and strategies involved in addressing cultural and religious disparities in the country. The research employed library research analysis, utilizing an intercultural communication approach.

Vocal education in the context of intercultural communication: Experience of teaching chinese students

The article considers vocal education in an intercultural communication perspective, presents corresponding Polish research and experience of Chinese students training in Ukrainian universities. The result of the study is the idea of creating a kind of multi-aesthetic synthesis, where a specific association of vocal activities in different cultures will be made. One example of this is a project that will contain both the European vocal technique elements and the Chinese singing tradition in one performance. The article proves that internationalization processes in higher art education create the context of intercultural communication in the process of vocal training of Chinese students and a new trend emerges – research area of Chinese PhD students in Ukrainian universities. The studies of Chinese researchers conducted in Ukraine contribute to the achievement of the specified synthesis.

Research of the Spring Festival Report Overseas in Chinese Mainstream Media: Taking the CGTN as an Example

In the context of intercultural communication, as a traditional Chinese festival. The Spring Festival (also called Chinese New Year)has caused widespread dissemination overseas. The article takes Chinese mainstream media CGTN’s Chinese New Year related reports released on Youtube platform as research samples, and takes the period of Chinese New Year of the Rabbit in 2023 as the time period for the study. Starting from the video content released by CGTN, the article explores the Chinese image and Chinese symbols shaped by it. And with the support of Frame Theory, the study analyzes the reporting framework from two levels of textual content and value orientation, and further to explore the communication dilemma of Chinese image in the intercultural communication context.

ПУБЛИЧНАЯ ДИСКУССИЯ КАК СРЕДСТВО РАЗВИТИЯ РЕЧЕВОЙ КРЕАТИВНОСТИ: ОПЫТ МОЛОДОГО УЧИТЕЛЯ

Modern education in the 21st century is shaped by the trend of universality. The pedagogical community is preparing for the realities where a fundamental skill of future teachers is the ability to “see the big picture.” However, the dominance of reproductive tasks suppresses the personal and professional initiative of educators. This results in a loss of the ability to express professional positions creatively and independently, leading to a lack of creativity in solving complex pedagogical situations. It is important to remember that the speech of a future teacher is not only the primary tool in educational activities but also an example for students to learn and emulate. The development of the future teacher’s speech creativity through discussion helps mitigate the identified shortcomings. Speech creativity in this context encompasses the ability to engage in dialogue with various audiences (colleagues, students, parents, administration), mastery of intonation and voice tone (as factors influencing engagement), and the ability to speak spontaneously, coherently, and clearly. Achieving these skills for future teachers is facilitated by public discussion as a platform for practicing their communicative competencies. Public discussions offer advantages such as the opportunity to prepare in advance, develop a presentation strategy, and simultaneously prepare spontaneous responses to audience questions, engage in discussions with colleagues, and receive feedback. Thus, the central purpose of public discussion as a means of developing speech creativity is practical training, self-development, and active participation in the academic sphere of higher education. Changes in sociocultural situations, consideration of intercultural communication contexts, and modern educational trends in higher education highlight the challenge of preparing future teachers professionally. Developing the speech creativity of future teachers through public discussion enables the production of prepared and contemporary specialists capable of addressing educational challenges.

“Am I Being Rude”: Exploring Indonesian Students’ Intercultural Communicative Competence in Inner Circle Countries

Studies in Intercultural Communication Competence (ICC) has been extensively investigated by numerous experts in the last decade. Some models and approaches have been constructed to the purposes of developing individuals’ competency in intercultural communication context. However, some problems occurred due to cultural discrepancy. The purpose of this study is to explore strategies being used by Indonesian postgraduates’ students to be inter-culturally and communicatively competent. Interviews session (adopted from Fantini’s conceptual framework) with sixteen Indonesian students have been conducted to scrutinise their personal experienced and awareness in intercultural communication setting. Despite the fact that the existences of cultural diversity in inner circle countries, Indonesian students have attempted to exposure more in intercultural interaction. They converged themselves with other international students as well as with locals in the community. From a critical perspective, this study suggested that Indonesian students should attempt to shift out from their ‘very own’ circle. Equally significant, to be more open to initiate more deep conversation and involve in a more interactive, intercultural communication settings, with other students from different countries.

Promoting Intercultural Competences and Communication Skills through English Textbooks within Multilingual Education

In intercultural and transcultural communication contexts within multilingual education, English learners should be able to communicate and interact with other people who have different linguistic and cultural background. For this reason, intercultural contents should be incorporated in EFL textbooks to promote learners’ intercultural competences and communication skills. The contents are designed with containing not only Anglo-American and British cultural dimensions but also learners’ home and foreign cultures. It is to prepare learners to become global citizens. The principal aim of this study is to investigate how teachers apply English textbooks to promote learners’ intercultural competences and intercultural communicative skills within multilingual education. This article argues that intercultural representations incorporated in EFL textbooks are used as useful resources for helping learners develop their intercultural competences and communication skills. also, the ways teachers carry out their teaching in the classes are measured. The results of this study show that the teachers employ EFL textbooks effectively with utilizing potential teaching materials containing cultural values to promote learners’ intercultural competences and communicative skills within multilingual education. This study also suggests that English teachers needs reinforcement in multilingual education.

AUTHENTIC MATERIALS IN FRENCH LANGUAGE LEARNING AS A PRACTICE OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION

The theoretical aspects of the use of authentic materials in the study of foreign languages are mainly focused on the problem of forming the language and speech competence of the methodological provision of separate components of intercultural students' education. However, the context of intercultural communication actualises the question of the functional filling of authentic educational materials for the implementation of linguocultural and socio-cultural aspects in the study of a foreign language. The purpose of the article is to study the effectiveness of authentic educational materials in the formation of foreign communicative competence, which has a complex structure and acts as interaction and interpenetration of linguistic, sociocultural and communicative competences, the level of formation of which allows a student or a future specialist to effectively implement a foreign language, and, therefore, interlingual, intercultural and interpersonal communication. The study uses a wide range of theoretical methods, including discursive analysis, intercultural studies, pragmatic and sociolinguistics approaches, systematisation of scientific research that studies this issue, as well as a survey method, including observation, conversion analysis and a statistical method during the calculation of results. The effectiveness of authentic materials such as authentic textbooks, written and oral texts from the media, video and audio materials, and the advantages of the IT network in the teaching of the French language have been analysed. Chinese international students and American domestic students’ intercultural communication in response to group criticism: collective face and discomfort feelings

PurposeGroup criticism plays an important role in intergroup relations and conflicts, but few studies have related group criticism to intercultural communication contexts. This study aims to explore two cultural groups’ (Chinese international students in the USA and American domestic students) collective face concern as a unique experience in intercultural communication and other psychological responses while encountering group criticism targeting their country image.Design/methodology/approachA laboratory experiment was conducted assessing Chinese international students (n = 115) and American domestic students’ (n = 100) responses to a research-confederate critic (whose group membership was manipulated) criticizing participants’ country image such as blaming China and the USA for air pollution or using drugs in the Olympics. analysis of covariance, correlational analysis and regression analysis were adopted to analyze the data.FindingsChinese international students reported higher collective face concerns and lower liking toward the critic compared with American students. When criticism specifically targeted participants’ country image, Chinese international students reported more discomfort feelings than American students; and while responding to the critic who identified as participants’ ingroup member, Chinese international students’ discomfort feelings were more susceptible to their collective face than American students in the same condition.Originality/valueThis study illustrates cultural differences in collective face concerns and psychological reactions in responding to criticism targeting a country image in intercultural communication contexts.

Autopoiesis of the Discourse of Religious Tolerance (Early Intercultural Communication in the 19th Century)

The problem of religious tolerance is becoming more and more relevant both for the Russian Federation and the modern world as a whole, since not only the media, but also academic publications almost every day inform us about conflicts between religious communities of local and global scale. The article examines a number of new aspects of the phenomenon of religious tolerance that are revealed when it is described as an autopoiesis of a specific intercultural communicative discourse. This specific discourse is explicitly presented in the texts of the 19th centuries and later texts included in the database of the academic linguistic resource National Corpus of the Russian Language. The texts manifest special forms of implicit tolerance, which is formed, developed and transformed in the global context of intercultural communication, which seeks to distribute the true (“due”, “normative”) and superstitious (“false”, “forbidden”). Starting with the most ancient texts supersticious is intended to mark the difference between permissible (“tolerant”, “ridiculed”) and the unconditionally forbidden (“dangerous”, “intolerant”). The development of communication from the most ancient face-to-face communication to written forms in urban cultures and mass media images of global reality contributes to the formation of an imperial understanding of local features in modern culture. A number of materials from the Russian history of the 19th century show us in detail the development of discourse of tolerance in dialectics with the discourse of intolerance. We can see it from the era of the creation of the Holly Alliance by Alexander I, in which Orthodox Christians, Catholics and Lutherans were proclaimed one Christian people to protective triad of Uvarov and national romanticism, which sought not only to distance itself from everything different, but also to enter into a multifaceted intercultural dialogue. Communicating with the ‘uncultured’: the study of conventional norms in Indonesian intercultural communication context

ABSTRACT Intercultural communication study is gaining relevance in the globalised and connected world. This paper continues the research trend of communication practice between East versus West, using Indonesian and American communication practices as a case study. The paper aims (1) to assess Indonesian intercultural communication practice based on the five components of intercultural communication competence and (2) to explain the cause of the clashing norms which lead to intercultural communication problems in an Indonesian context. Data were drawn from questionnaires administered to Indonesian research participants and semi-structured interviews with Americans. The assessment components of intercultural communication competence show that despite having high levels of motivation, Indonesians still have difficulty communicating with Americans. The problem is mainly caused by fixed conventional norms possessed by Indonesians. This leads Indonesians to develop negative attitudes towards Americans, whom they label as ‘uncultured’.

O conceito bermaniano de “a prova do estrangeiro” é particularmente capaz de elucidar e explicar a prática tradutória pós-colonial. A escrita literária em línguas europeias na África é caracterizada pela vernaculização e pela diglossia literária como estratégia de escrita em um contexto de comunicação intercultural. O emprego de línguas coloniais suscita questões de identidade e de ideologia, assim como o problema das relações de poder entre o centro e a periferia. A estratégia de desterritorialização e de reterritorialização, frequentemente utilizada por escritores pós-coloniais para tentar se reapropriar da língua colonial e reivindicar seu espaço próprio, é um exemplo do que Berman chama de “a escrita-de-tradução”. Esse estilo de escrita tem fundamentos ideológicos e socioculturais e coloca questões importantes relativas à s escolhas tradutórias, questões à s quais apenas se pode esperar responder por meio de uma ética séria e global da tradução. As teorias pós-modernas podem contribuir para a definição de um quadro ético da tradução que permite se distanciar da dicotomia presente na base de grande parte das teorias em tradutologia e que opõe a tradução estrangeirizadora à tradução domesticadora.

Ethnic Stereotypes in Intercultural Communication: Psychological and Semantic Aspects

Currently, ethnic stereotypes are considered as phenomena that mediate the processes of intercultural perception, dialogue and interaction. This fact determines the relevance of it comprehensive interdisciplinary study by different sciences (sociology, political science, psychology, linguistics, etc.). In this article, ethnic stereotypes are analyzed, firstly, at the psychological level (types, functions, structure), and secondly, at the psycholinguistic and psychosemantic levels (from the point of view of the rationale for it diagnosis with using the semantic differential). The possibilities of the semantic differential for studying the content, consistency, direction and intensity of social stereotypes in general, as well as the method modifications for diagnosis ethnic stereotypes, are examined. The heuristic potential of semantic differential for diagnosing ethnic stereotypes as phenomena, on the one hand, reflecting various aspects of intercultural perception and dialogue, and, on the other hand, directly affecting the intercultural interaction, is shown on the example of empirical studies on ethnic stereotypes in the intercultural communication context. The results of ethnic stereotypes studies are of high practical importance for the development of programs for increase intercultural competence, which are in demand in various areas of modern society in the face of e globalization and the growth of intercultural contacts (education, business, tourism, etc.).

Formation of senior students’ sociocultural competence by means of blog technology

This article is devoted to the research of the formation of sociocultural competence in the process of teaching a foreign language at the senior stage with the help of the blog technology. The relevance of this article is because sociocultural competence is one of the structural components of communicative competence, which is key in the context of global intercultural communication. The aim of the research is to provide the theoretical basis and practical verification of the effectiveness of using blog technology in the formation of the sociocultural competence of senior students in a foreign language class. In the research, the authors analysed the characteristics of the blog and the benefits of its use, revealed that using the blog technology can develop almost all types of speech activities: writing, reading and listening, as well as improve the sociocultural competence of students. Obviously, the blog technology has many advantages compared to other technologies, as it includes all types of information. Consequently, the blog provides an opportunity to implement various tasks. The article describes the experimental work, namely, its purpose, tasks, stages, conditions, content, methods of teaching the formation of the sociocultural competence of senior students.

Muslim customer’s shopping experiences in multicultural retail environment

PurposeThis study aims to understand better the impact of intercultural communication, social environment and personality on customer satisfaction and post-purchase stage in retailing from Muslim customers’ perspective. In this endeavour, this study illustrates the unique context of intercultural communication to highlight several improvements contributing towards the advancement of intercultural communication literature.Design/methodology/approachThis research adopted a survey approach where 450 questionnaires were obtained among selected grocery retailers in Klang Valley, Malaysia. The measurement of the constructs and their interrelationships were examined based on partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM).FindingsThe findings partially validated the proposed framework with statistically significant relationships among all constructs. Furthermore, it exposed additional insights into some practical and conceptual solutions for addressing intercultural communication of religiously and culturally diverse service encounters in the Malaysian grocery retail industry. These contributions postulated an impetus for future research in various service settings.Originality/valueBased on the theories, this study assessed the role of the social environment and personality of grocery retail customers on intercultural communication competence (ICC). It also examined the impacts of ICC on inter-role congruence and interaction comfort. It is anticipated that by filling this knowledge gap, the research assisted in strengthening retail communication strategies, which require intercultural communication adjustments in a multicultural business environment. ICC is expected to improve the retail industry’s competitiveness when it positively influences inter-role congruence and interaction comfort among customers.
