Nanoscale Stolephorus sp. powder fabrication using high-energy milling for bioactive materials in dentistry.

The application of natural products in dentistry has been widely explored. Anchovy (Stolephorus in Latin) has been examined for its bioactive content (calcium, phosphorus and fluoride) as an agent for bone stimulation and tooth development, topical fluoridation and pulp capping. Ball milling has been used to prepare calcium oxide nanoparticles from snakehead fish bone. The aim of the study was to reduce the particle size of Stolephorus sp. powder to the nanoscale using high-energy ball milling for 8, 12 and 24 h, and to analyze the optimal milling time by comparing the powder characteristics. The Stolephorus sp. were oven-dried at 50°C for 6 h, after which the entire fish were crushed into powder. The fish powder was produced by blending the material for 5 min and passing it through a 200-mesh sieve. The remaining dried fish was blended again for 5 min until it passed through the sieve. The top-down approach to the particle size reduction was performed using high-energy milling at 3 distinct time points (8, 12 and 24 h). The characteristics of the powder were evaluated using a particle size analyzer, a Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The Stolephorus sp. powder contained 64.50% protein, 7,420 mg/kg sodium, 28,912 mg/kg calcium, and 1,924 mg/kg magnesium. The high-energy milling process resulted in a reduction of the particle size from the microscale to the nanoscale. The analysis of the average particle size and polydispersity index indicated that 24 h of milling showed the most optimal results. Furthermore, the functional groups exhibited no significant alteration at 3 milling times (p ≥ 0.05, FTIR analysis). The high-energy milling method has the potential to reduce the particle size of Stolephorus sp. powder to the nanoscale at the 8- and 24-h milling periods. The powder resulting from the 24-h milling process had a size of 789.3 ±170.7 nm, smooth size distribution, good size uniformity, a polydispersity index of 0.763, no significant change in organic and inorganic compound content, and a calcium/phosphorus ratio that was the closest to that of hydroxyapatite (HAp).

Fluorescence Polarization Assays for Organic Compounds in Food Safety.

Elevated concentrations of toxic organic compounds observed in food products pose serious dangers to human health. Both natural and artificial pollutants can cause food contamination. The stages of food production, packaging, transportation, and storage can also largely cause the appearance of undesirable substances in food products. The health consequences of ingesting food containing toxic contaminants range from mild gastroenteritis to deaths resulting from dysfunctional internal organs and neurological syndromes. The World Health Organization (WHO) sets recommendations for the content of such chemicals in food, including a minimum allowable concentration considered safe for human consumption. However, the control of food products from chemical pollutants is necessary. Moreover, fast, sensitive, and inexpensive methods are needed to detect them at the point of need. Currently, immune analysis methods are most widely used to determine pollutants in food. The development of fluorescence polarization immunoassay (FPIA) methods in a competitive format is a powerful and modern tool for detecting organic molecules in various matrices, thereby making FPIA methods useful for food safety applications. Due to the availability of portable devices for measuring the fluorescence polarization signal, FPIA methods can be used at the point of need. The variety of fluorescent labels and recognizing elements (receptors, monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies, and nanobodies) permits fluorescence polarization (FP) assays to detect significantly lower limits of organic substances. The FP assay is a homogeneous, fast, and quantitative method. The development of various formats of FP assays makes them promising in determining food pollutants. This review summarizes publications on FP analyses for detecting organic contaminants (pesticides, hormones, toxins, antibiotics, and other pharmaceuticals) in food products during 2018-2023. Further, it demonstrates the prospects for using this method to determine pollutants at the point of need and for detecting high molecular weight substances, fungi, and bacterial infections during food safety inspections.

Ambient volatile organic compounds concentration variation characteristics and source apportionment in Lanzhou, China during the COVID-19 lockdown

During the COVID-19 lockdown, PM2.5, ozone and precursor NOx were widely reported, but changes on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were scarcely reported. It is important to understand the impact of drastic changes in anthropogenic emissions on the levels of VOCs. In this study, VOCs were collected with Summa tank for monitoring before (Period I), during (Period II) and after (Period III) the COVID-19 lockdown in Lanzhou, Northwest China. During the lockdown, the average concentration of VOCs was 49.01 ± 20.63 ppbv, the total mixing ratio was 39.3 % and 48.5 % lower than Period I and Period III, at the same time alkanes, alkenes, aromatics, halo hydrocarbons decreased by 45.5 % and 46.4 %, 20.2 % and 15.1 %, 21.0 % and 51.4 %, 42.9 % and 61.6 %, respectively. The ratio of benzene/toluene (B/T) increased from 0.85 (Period I) to 1.40 (Period II) and finally to 1.83 (Period III). The trend of isobutane to n-butane （IB/NB）was 0.28 (Period I)-0.75 (Period II)-0.92 (Period III). The above results indicated that traffic source contribute more to VOCs in the Period I, and natural gas, coal and biomass combustion are the main sources during the Period II and III. The xylene/ethylbenzene (X/E) ratio showed a tendence higher in the middle (1.42) and lower on both sides (0.78 and 0.57, respectively), which indicated that the aging of gas masses during the lockdown is lower than Period I and III. Five factors resolved by the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model were Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and vehicle exhaust emission, biomass/coal burning, industrial coatings/solvents, industrial process and gasoline exhaust. The source apportionment calculation consistent with the ratio of B/T and IB/NB showed that the contribution of biomass/coal burning increased from 13.1 % (Period I) to 21.8 % (Period II), while the contribution of LPG and vehicle exhaust emission decreased from 45.8 % to 31.5 %.

Sensitivity of air quality model responses to emission changes: comparison of results based on four EU inventories through FAIRMODE benchmarking methodology

Abstract. Despite the application of an increasingly strict EU air quality legislation, air quality remains problematic in large parts of Europe. To support the abatement of these remaining problems, a better understanding of the potential impacts of emission abatement measures on air quality is required, and air chemistry transport models (CTMs) are the main instrument to perform emission reduction scenarios. In this study, we study the robustness of the model responses to emission reductions when emission input is changed. We investigate how inconsistencies in emissions impact the modelling responses in the case of emission reduction scenarios. Based on EMEP simulations over Europe fed by four emission inventories – EDGAR 5.0, EMEP-GNFR, CAMS 2.2.1 and CAMS version 4.2 (including condensables) – we reduce anthropogenic emissions in six cities (Brussels, Madrid, Rome, Bucharest, Berlin and Stockholm) and two regions (Po Valley in Italy and Malopolska in Poland) and study the variability in the concentration reductions obtained with these four emission inventories. Our study reveals that the impact of reducing aerosol precursors on PM10 concentrations result in different potentials and potencies, differences that are mainly explained by differences in emission quantities, differences in their spatial distributions as well as in their sector allocation. In general, the variability among models is larger for concentration changes (potentials) than for absolute concentrations. Similar total precursor emissions can, however, hide large variations in sectorial allocation that can lead to large impacts on potency given their different vertical distribution. Primary particulate matter (PPM) appears to be the precursor leading to the major differences in terms of potentials. From an emission inventory viewpoint, this work indicates that the most efficient actions to improve the robustness of the modelling responses to emission changes would be to better assess the sectorial share and total quantities of PPM emissions. From a modelling point of view, NOx responses are the more challenging and require caution because of their non-linearity. For O3, we find that the relationship between emission reduction and O3 concentration change shows the largest non-linearity for NOx (concentration increase) and a quasi-linear behaviour for volatile organic compounds (concentration decrease). We also emphasise the importance of accurate ratios of emitted precursors since these lead to changes in chemical regimes, directly affecting the responses of O3 or PM10 concentrations to emission reductions.

Effect of spraying air freshener on particulate and volatile organic compounds in vehicles

People in these days spend approximately 6 % of their time in a means of transport. Air fresheners are frequently used in vehicles to mask odors; however, they can cause adverse health effects such as cardiovascular disease, systemic inflammation and autonomic dysfunction. This study aimed to identify the effects of air fresheners on the concentrations of particulate and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in different vehicle cabins. Scanning mobility and optical particle sizers were used for the particle measurements. VOCs (e.g., BTEX and d-limonene) were collected using a Tenax TA. The products were sprayed for less than a minute. The study assessed three spray products (all trigger types), vehicle size (small, medium, and large), cabin temperature (10 °C, 20 °C, and 25 °C), and in-vehicle ventilation mode (all-off, recirculation, and external inflow modes). The particle concentration increased rapidly during the 1-min spraying of the products. The proportion of nanoparticles in the front seat (67.2 % ± 2.2 %) was 11.1 % ± 2.2 % lower than that in the rear seat (75.6 % ± 2.1 %). The spray product and vehicle size did not significantly affect the particle or VOC concentrations. With an increase in the temperature of the front seat, the proportion of nanoparticles increased by 25.3 % ± 3.2 %. Moreover, the maximum total VOC concentrations (front seat: 364.3 μg/m3; back seat: 241.3 μg/m3) were observed at 20 °C. Under in-vehicle ventilation, recirculation effectively reduced the overall particle concentration within the cabin; however, the generated VOCs circulated. The external inflow proved effective in cabin air purification by reducing the total VOC concentration to 56.0–57.2 % compared with other ventilation modes. These findings provide substantial insight into the persistence of particles and the dynamics of their dispersion, thereby enabling informed decision-making for particle-related risk management.

Improvement of ferrioxalate assisted Fenton and photo-Fenton processes for paracetamol degradation by hydrogen peroxide dosage.

This work aimed to investigate the impact of hydrogen peroxide (HP) punctual dosage on paracetamol (PCT) degradation, through Fenton and photo-Fenton processes under near-neutral pH conditions, using ferrioxalate and artificial sunlight. The assays were performed using a D-optimal experimental design, to statistically evaluate the influence of radiation (ON or OFF), HP concentration (94.5-756mg L-1), and HP dosage (YES or NO), on PCT conversion. The optimal conditions determined from the study were: HP = 378mg L-1, DOS = YES, and RAD = ON, achieving a predicted PCT conversion of 99.68% in 180min. This result obtained from the model was very close to the experimental one (98.80%). It was verified that HP dosage positively influenced the iron catalytic cycle since higher Fe2+ concentrations were reached at shorter reaction times, accelerating not only PCT conversion but also its by-products hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone, leading to better performances of Fenton and photo-Fenton reactions. Under optimal conditions and employing real water matrices (an artificial matrix with inorganic anions, a real groundwater sample, and a synthetic industrial wastewater), HP dosage demonstrated the ability to mitigate the negative effects caused by the content of different ions and other organic compounds and significantly improve HP consumption in challenging wastewater conditions.

Assessment of Atmospheric Pollution by Selected Elements and PAHs during 12-Month Active Biomonitoring of Terrestrial Mosses

Biomonitoring studies are most often used in short-term study periods to quickly obtain information on the state/quality of the environment and its pollution levels. Performing long-term surveys involves a prolonged wait for the result and is therefore not often used and is rather associated with classical air quality monitoring. The aim of this study was to evaluate atmospheric air pollution by selecting 16 elements and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons conducted as part of a 12-month ‘moss-bag’ technique of an active biomonitoring method with the use of three moss species: Pleurozium schreberi, Sphagnum fallax, and Dicranum polysetum. All analytes were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). As a result of the experiment, it was found that the concentrations of all elements increased with time of exposure. The total sum of them in D. polysetum moss was 30% and 60% more than in P. schreberi and S. fallax, respectively, which allows us to consider this species’ broader use in active biomonitoring. For PAHs analysis, the best biomonitor in time was P. schreberi, which accumulated 25% and 55% more than S. fallax and D. polysetum, respectively. In this one-year study, most organic compounds accumulated between 5 and 6 months of exposure, depending on the species. Given the low-cost nature of active biomonitoring, it should be concluded that mosses could be used in long-term monitoring of the quality of the atmospheric aerosol in terms of element and organic compound concentration in air.

The content and composition of organic compounds in the bottom sediments of the Norilsk-Pyasina water system one year after the accidental spill of diesel fuel

One year after the emergency diesel fuel spill in Norilsk, hydrocarbon concentrations in bottom sediments of the Norilsk-Pyasina water system decreased. However the average concentrations of hydrocarbons in surface sediments decreased in the same sequence (μg/g) as in 2020: the mouth of the Ambarnaya R. (835, σ = 1788) > Bezymyanny Cr.–the Daldykan R.–the Ambarnaya R. (306, σ = 273) > the Pyasina R. (23, σ = 20) > the Pyasino Lake (12, σ = 8). Concentrations decreased due to degradation of low molecular weight hydrocarbons. The content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in 2021 also changed in a smaller range (0–1027 ng/g) than in 2020 (0–3865 ng/g). Petroleum origin of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the sediments of the Ambarnaya R. (including the mouth), Bezymyanny Cr. and the Daldykan R. is confirmed by the dominance of alkylated naphthalene homologues in their composition. Hydrocarbons accumulation in some layers of the sedimentary column is caused not only by the spill of diesel fuel, but also by the organic matter from the surrounding swamps, from wetlands and floodplain lakes, as well as by the burial of the surface layer by the 2021 flood.

Co-Transport of Aniline and TNT with Loess Colloid Particles in Saturated Loess Columns: Mechanism and Processes

The transport of mobile colloidal particles with organic pollutants in porous media has attracted considerable attention. Aniline and 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), as aromatic compounds and key components of energetic materials, are continuously released into the environment. This study compared the co-transport of loess colloidal particles with aniline and TNT, aiming to investigate the influence of structural and physicochemical properties of the pollutants. The colloids were prepared and characterized, and static adsorption and dynamic column experiments were conducted. The results indicate that the adsorption processes of aniline and TNT both conformed to the quasi-second-order kinetic and the intra-particle diffusion models, with aniline exhibiting higher rate constants than TNT. The main adsorption mechanism involved van der Waals force, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction. Response surface experiments indicated that the adsorption capacity increased with higher initial concentration of organic compound but decreased with larger particle size and higher Na+ concentration. In column experiments, the adsorption of loess colloid particles on aniline and TNT was strongly correlated with the concentration of loess colloid particles. Loess colloid particles could be used as carriers to enhance the co-transport, with aniline exhibiting a faster transport rate due to the differences in polarity and molecular structure compared to TNT. In summary, loess colloidal particles enhanced the transport behavior of aniline and TNT in saturated loess columns. The differences in polarity and molecular structure of aniline and TNT further affect their co-transport mechanism in loess.

The Effect of Wooden Building Materials on the Indoor Air Quality of Houses

This work focuses on researching wood as a low-emitting building material. Many studies showed that by regulating the emission of adverse chemicals from pressed wood products, they could be recycled as low-emitting materials. The presented case study, shows the measurements of the indoor air quality in a passive, low-energy, wooden, light frame house. Concentrations of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and formaldehyde were measured and compared with data from other case studies made in this subject and with the current Hungarian and international regulations of adverse chemicals. The main VOC materials which concentrations were significant in all measurements were terpenes (limonene, alpha-pinene, 3-carene), aliphatic-hydrocarbons and aldehydes (acetic acid, 2-Methoxy-1-ethylmethyl acetate). The comparison showed that the concentrations of benzene, toluene, naphthalene, formaldehyde, and styrene were not deviant from the average values measured by other case studies. The observations showed that the main influencing factors of indoor air quality were the changes in indoor temperature, relative humidity, air exchange rate, and human activities. The conclusion is that the wooden materials applied in the house are low-emitting materials and do not pose a health risk for people.

Investigating Benzene and Derivatives in Edible Oils: Impact of Heating Duration Analysed through VOC Examination

This study investigates the concentration of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in various edible oils and their behaviour when subjected to heat. Building on the limited data available on the effects of heating on these compounds, the research provides a comprehensive analysis of benzene and its derivatives in fresh and heated edible oils. Utilizing High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with a UV detector at 254 nm wavelength. Our findings demonstrate that fresh mustard, cottonseed, rice bran, and palm oils possess higher initial concentrations of benzene and substituted benzenes. These concentrations decrease significantly upon heating, which is likely due to the volatilization of low-boiling organic compounds. Furthermore, the study explores the emissions of VOC during deep frying with edible oils, which is a significant concern given their mutagenic and carcinogenic potential. The vapours captured 2, 4, 6 hours of heating were analysed, revealing high levels of benzene and its derivatives, particularly from mustard oil. The intense emissions from frying mustard oil suggest potential health risks for individuals exposed to these fumes, especially cooks.

The chemical assessment of surfaces and air (CASA) study: using chemical and physical perturbations in a test house to investigate indoor processes.

The Chemical Assessment of Surfaces and Air (CASA) study aimed to understand how chemicals transform in the indoor environment using perturbations (e.g., cooking, cleaning) or additions of indoor and outdoor pollutants in a well-controlled test house. Chemical additions ranged from individual compounds (e.g., gaseous ammonia or ozone) to more complex mixtures (e.g., a wildfire smoke proxy and a commercial pesticide). Physical perturbations included varying temperature, ventilation rates, and relative humidity. The objectives for CASA included understanding (i) how outdoor air pollution impacts indoor air chemistry, (ii) how wildfire smoke transports and transforms indoors, (iii) how gases and particles interact with building surfaces, and (iv) how indoor environmental conditions impact indoor chemistry. Further, the combined measurements under unperturbed and experimental conditions enable investigation of mitigation strategies following outdoor and indoor air pollution events. A comprehensive suite of instruments measured different chemical components in the gas, particle, and surface phases throughout the study. We provide an overview of the test house, instrumentation, experimental design, and initial observations - including the role of humidity in controlling the air concentrations of many semi-volatile organic compounds, the potential for ozone to generate indoor nitrogen pentoxide (N2O5), the differences in microbial composition between the test house and other occupied buildings, and the complexity of deposited particles and gases on different indoor surfaces.

Combined temperature and salinity effects on the passive sampling of PAHs with an assessment of impacts to petroleum toxicity.

In equilibrium-based passive sampling applications, the accuracy of estimating freely dissolved concentration (Cfree) of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) relies on the passive sampler-water partition coefficient (KPS-W) values applied. The vast majority of KPS-W are generated under standard conditions: 20 °C in deionized or freshwater. Few empirically derived values are available for non-standard conditions. In this study, polyethylene (PE)-water partitioning coefficients (KPE-W) were experimentally determined for 15 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, comprising 9 parent and 6 alkylated compounds) under three different temperature (10, 20, 30 °C) and salinity (0, 18 and 36‰) regimes, the KPE-W values were found to correlate strongly with a variety of molecular parameters (e.g., octanol-water partition coefficients (KOW), molecular weight (MW) and molecular volume (MVOL)). The effects of temperature and salinity on the magnitude of KPE-W were found to be substantial. For temperature, the values range between -0.005 and -0.023 log units per °C; these values indicate that every 10 °C rise in temperature would potentially decrease the KPE-W by a factor of between 0.4 to 1.6. For salinity, the values range from 0.0028 to 0.0057 log units per unit ‰, indicating that an 18‰ increase in salinity would likely increase the KPE-W by a factor of between 0.28 and 0.82. Moreover, temperature and salinity were shown to be independent of each other and non-interacting. Temperature effects were chemical-specific and moderately dependent on hydrophobicity (expressed as the KOW), whereas salinity effects were independent of hydrophobicity. We also assessed the combined impact of temperature and salinity, which showed increasing effects with the hydrophobicity of the PAHs studied. Based on the results, KPE-W values adjusted for site-specific temperature and salinity can be calculated. The impact of applying such site-specific values was demonstrated using a PE-based field monitoring dataset for PAHs from coastal waters of Grand Isle (LA, USA) collected during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. When KPE-W values were adjusted to 10 °C and 30 °C, the final freely dissolved concentrations (Cfree) decreased or increased depending on the adjustment. Use of the results of this investigation allow for adjusting existing PE-based datasets to site-specific conditions resulting in more accurate Cfree values for estimating exposure and adverse ecological effects.

Analysis and application of volatile metabolic profiles of Escherichia coli: a preliminary GC-IMS-based study.

Nosocomial infections caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli) may pose serious risks to patients, and early identification of pathogenic bacteria and drug sensitivity results can improve patient prognosis. In this study, we clarified the composition and relative content of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) generated by E. coli in tryptic soy broth (TSB) using gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). We explored whether imipenem (IPM) could be utilized to differentiate between carbapenem-sensitive E. coli (CSEC) and carbapenem-resistant E. coli (CREC). The results revealed that 36 VOCs (alcohols, aldehydes, acids, esters, ketones, pyrazines, heterocyclic compounds, and unknown compounds) were detected using GC-IMS. Besides, the results indicated that changes in the relative content of VOCs as well as changes in the signal intensity of fingerprints were able to assess the growth state of bacteria during bacterial growth and help identify E. coli. Lastly, under selective pressure of IPM, volatile fingerprints of E. coli could be employed as a model to distinguish CSEC from CREC strains.

Simulating Biogas Production Process from Palm Oil Mill Effluent for Power Generation

The rapid growth of the palm oil industry in Indonesia has made it the world's largest palm oil producer. However, this progress comes with a challenge as the industry generates Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), which poses an environmental threat if directly discharged into the environment. POME contains high concentrations of organic compounds that can be harnessed to produce energy in biogas through anaerobic treatment processes. This study aims to develop an efficient POME biogas production technique for large-scale power generation. The biogas production process with a capacity of 675.38 Kg/batch, 51,9 tonnes/year, and economic evaluation were simulated using SuperPro Designer v13.0. Biogas production from POME involves a series of stages employing anaerobic microorganisms for organic material decomposition, including hydrolysis, acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and methanogenesis. The simulation results indicate that the plant can produce biogas with a composition of 86.228% methane, 1.507% water, 0.059% hydrogen, 0.016% hydrogen sulfide, and 1.959% carbon dioxide within a batch time of 114 hours. The economic feasibility simulation resulted in a Net Present Value (NPV) of $553,000, Internal Return Rate (IRR) of 19.3%, and Payback Period (PBP) of 4.22 years. Those results confirm the viability of these projects.

Simultaneous modulation of cathode/anode and electrolyte interfaces via a nitrile additive for high-energy-density lithium-metal batteries.

Nickel-rich layered oxides have great potential for commercial development applications, so it is critical to address their stability over long cycles. Ensuring long-term cycle stability relies heavily on the stability of the interface between the electrode and electrolyte in Li|LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) batteries. In this work, a denser, more stable and thinner nickel-rich cathode/electrolyte interface was constructed by electrolyte engineering with succinonitrile (SN) as an additive. The increase of organic compound content in the formed Ni-rich cathode/electrolyte interface can fully release the stress and strain generated during repetitive charge-discharge processes, and significantly reduce the irreversible phase transition during the nickel-rich cathode charge-discharge processes. Additionally, this interface impedes the breakdown of electrolytes and the dissolution of transition metals. Furthermore, the addition of SN additives also forms a more stable lithium metal anode/electrolyte interface. Notably, batteries containing SN additives (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 wt%) show excellent electrochemical performance compared to base electrolytes. Particularly, the improvement is most significant with an SN addition of 1.0 wt%. After 250 cycles at 1C rate, the capacity retention rate of the battery improved by 32.8%. Thus, this work provides a new perspective for simultaneously constructing a stable interface of nickel-rich cathode and lithium metal anode with a high energy density in lithium metal batteries.

Identification of Volatile Molecules and Bioactivity of Gruyt Craft Beer Enriched with Citrus aurantium var. dulcis L. Essential Oil.

In this work, for the first time, a gruyt beer and the same one after the addition of Citrus aurantium essential oil (AEO), were investigated to determine the composition of the volatile fraction. The applied analytical techniques, such as Head Space/Solid Phase Microextraction-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (HS/SPME-GC-MS) and Proton Transfer Reaction-Time of Flight-Mass Spectrometer (PTR-ToF-MS), allowed us to identify the content of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). From the comparison between the two beer samples, it showed that the one after the addition of AEO was particularly richened in limonene and a series of minor terpene compounds. AEO was also characterized by GC/MS analysis and the results showed that limonene reached 95%. Confocal microscopy was used to look at riboflavin autofluorescence in yeast cells. It was found that beer with AEO had twice as much fluorescence intensity as the control. A spectrophotometric analysis of total polyphenols, tannins, and flavonoids, and a bioactivity screening, including 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-Azinobis-(3-Ethylbenzthiazolin-6-Sulfonic Acid) (ABTS) radical scavenger, chelating, reducing, antiglycative ones, were also carried out. Moreover, the tolerability of the tested samples in human H69 cholangiocytes and the cytoprotection towards the tert-butyl hydroperoxide (tBOOH)-induced oxidative damage were evaluated. Under our experimental conditions, the beers were found to be able to scavenge DPPH and ABTS radicals and chelate iron ions, despite weak antiglycative and reducing properties. The tested samples did not affect the viability of H69 cholangiocytes up to the highest concentrations; moreover, no signs of cytoprotection against the damage induced by tBOOH were highlighted. Adding AEO to beer resulted in a moderate enhancement of its DPPH scavenging and chelating abilities, without improvements in the other assays. Conversely, AEO and its major compound limonene were ineffective when assessed at the concentrations added to beer. This evidence suggests that the addition of AEO may enhance the organoleptic features of the beer and slightly potentiate some of its bioactivities.

(Invited) Role of Heterojunctions in Metal Oxide Heterostructures for Energy and Environmental Applications

Heterostructures made from metal oxide semiconductors are fundamental for the development of high-performance gas sensors and electrocatalysts, for examples. Here, I will introduce hierarchical heterostructures composed of p-, n-type and insulating metal oxide shells.Precisely controlled films of alternating metal oxides can be uniformly deposited onto the inner and outer walls of the CNTs and onto mesoporous substrates by atomic layer deposition. The morphological, microstructural and electrical characteristics of the heterostructures were thoroughly investigated. Electrical resistance measurements highlighted the large influence of the metal oxides thickness and charge carriers types, suggesting that the conductivity of the electrodes are dominated by Schottky barrier junctions across the heterojunctions.The behavior of the heterostructured electrodes in sensors and in electrocatalysis applications was investigated for low concentrations of volatile organic compounds and pollutants, and the oxygen evolution reaction in acidic media, respectively. For examples, the gas sensing response of the heterostructures showed a strong dependence on the thickness of the metal oxide shell layers and the type of heterostructures formed. On the other hand, the electrocatalytic performances are strongly related to the surface catalyst/stabilization layer and the electrical conductivity of the heterostructured electrode.On the basis of the morphological, microstructural and electrical characterization, and electrode performances, the mechanisms which account for the performances of our heterostructured electrodes will be correlated and discussed.

THE IMPACT OF STILLAGE FILTRATE ON THE SYNTHESIS OF VOLATILE IMPURITIES OF ALCOHOL AND THE OPTIMIZATION OF THE RECTIFICATION PROCESS

The aim of this research is to determine the influence stillage filtrate on the synthesis of volatile impurities in alcohol, with subsequent removal through the rectification process in a rectification unit operating in an energy-saving mode at pressures lower than atmospheric. The study was conducted at the state enterprise (hereinafter - SE) "Kozlivsky Distillery" located at: Ternopil region, Kozlivsky district, urban-type settlement Kozliv, using gas chromatographic method for determining the content of microcomponents (acetaldehyde, methanol, fusel oil components, esters) using capillary columns. The rectification unit includes various components such as the mash column, hydroselection column, rectification column, methanol column, impurity concentration column and "zero" column. During the research, technological parameters of operation of each unit component were studied, and the concentration of organic impurities in alcohol at different stages was determined. The results of this study allow improving the efficiency of the rectification unit, which is of great importance in alcohol production. Research was conducted on the impact stillage filtrate on the synthesis of volatile impurities in alcohol during fermentation. The research was carried out with the full use iltrate of stillage at the stage of preparing the fermenting substrate. The mash had different concentrations of dry substances. The stillage filtrate was obtained by centrifugation of native stillage and its suspended matter concentration did not exceed 1%. The influence of the amount stillage filtrate and the number of cycles of its recirculation on the biosynthesis of volatile organic compounds during fermentation was studied. The research results showed that the use stillage filtrate at the stage of preparing the fermenting substrate contributes to reducing water consumption and slows down the synthesis of acetaldehyde and higher alcohols during fermentation. With repeated use stillage filtrate, the synthesis process changes, which affects the concentration of volatile organic compounds in the fermentation mash. This impact should be taken into account when selecting operating modes of the rectification unit. Therefore, to obtain high-quality rectified alcohol, it is necessary to adjust the appropriate operating mode of the rectification unit and consider the influence stillage filtrate on the fermentation process.

Cataluminescence sensor based on LaCO3OH microspheres for volatile organic compounds detection and pattern recognition

The cataluminescence (CTL) reaction detects the presence and concentration of toxic volatile organic compounds by detecting the luminescence intensity of the different components of the gas mixture. In our study, a cataluminescence online sensor system based on LaCO3OH microspheres was developed for the low concentration detection of volatile organic compounds. Multi-dimensional CTL test was carried out to analyse the correlation characteristics of heterogeneous analytes among the catalytic activity, selectivity, sensitivity, response/recover time, stability, and photoelectric signals by changing the parameters of wavelength, flow rate, temperature, and response time under the optimal conditions (280 mL/min, 180ºC, and 480 nm). Due to noise interference received by the CTL signal, the weak CTL signal was filtered based on the time-frequency characteristics of the CTL pattern signal power frequency interference and background noise. Next, this study also studied the mechanism action of the cataluminescence sensor based on LaCO3OH microspheres for gas detection, including ethyl ether, acetone, chloroform, and formaldehyde. The principal component analysis (PCA) algorithm was adopted to analyse the CTL patterns, after threshold filtering, the total variance was improved from 89.23% to 98.78% and each vapour gave its unique CTL patterns. Moreover, clustering and identification are discussed to analyse the results, including Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA) and Radial Basis Function Neural Networks (RBFNN), was also discussed. The excellent cluster and recognition ability indicate the feasibility of this CTL sensor for volatile compound determination.
