Exploring blockchain technology acceptance among non-managerial construction practitioners in Shenzhen, China

PurposeProblems such as information asymmetry and a lack of trust among construction practitioners damage the quality and progress of construction projects. The decentralization, transparency, traceability and temper-proof nature of blockchain technology (BCT) can provide solutions and facilitate multiparty cooperation. However, BCT acceptance in the construction industry is relatively low, and there are few pilot projects adopting BCT. Most relevant literature focuses on BCT acceptance at the industry and organizational levels, but the impact of non-managerial practitioners executing BCT or the traditional approach in day-to-day work tends to be disregarded. This study aims to establish a theoretical model of BCT acceptance, identify key influencing factors and paths of behavioral intention to adopt BCT and promote strategies to enhance BCT adoption.Design/methodology/approachA new BCT acceptance model for construction practitioners was proposed. A survey was performed with 203 construction practitioners in Shenzhen, China and post-survey interviews were conducted with four BCT experts for validation. Covariance-based structural equation modeling was used to examine the influence paths and moderating effect analysis was performed to check practitioners’ differential perceptions.FindingsPerformance expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions and perceived behavioral control significantly and positively influence behavioral intention to accept BCT, while impacts from effort performance and risk are negative. Overcoming obstacles related to the effort required for BCT adoption and effective risk management will be essential to unlocking BCT’s transformative potential. Then, the moderating effects of respondents’ gender, degree and BCT knowledge as well as the project type involved were analyzed. Continued adoption of BCT in the construction industry has the potential to revolutionize project management, transparency and trust among stakeholders.Research limitations/implicationsThe findings of this research can help practitioners and government agencies understand crucial influencing factors and pathways of BCT acceptance. Targeted measures, such as increasing practitioners’ benefits and sense of BCT usefulness, conducting pilot projects and increasing publicity, were proposed for project leadership teams to enhance BCT adoption. This may lead to increased efficiency, reduced disputes and more streamlined and secure construction processes, ultimately enhancing the industry’s overall performance.Originality/valueFew studies have explored BCT acceptance from the perspective of non-managerial construction practitioners. The BCT acceptance model proposed in this study is a novel adaptation of previous technology acceptance models, with new factors (risk and perceived behavioral control) and moderating variables (degree, BCT knowledge and project type) added for better understanding of non-managerial practitioners’ perceptions and differences.

Therefore, this paper discusses the construction technology related to civil engineering construction projects, analyzes the relevant problems and puts forward innovative solutions.

Novel blockchain deep learning framework to ensure video security and lightweight storage for construction safety management

In construction management, video data tampering behavior like manual forging and deletion can negatively impact on-site safety and accident accountability. Blockchain technology holds the potential to address this issue by leveraging distributed ledger characteristics. However, blockchain's limited storage capacity and block size make it difficult to upload large-sized construction data such as daily monitoring video. Furthermore, it is unnecessary to store all construction data in any case. Therefore, this study proposes a blockchain deep learning framework that focuses on how to efficiently extract and securely store key information (i.e., video summarization that involves worker’s unsafe behavior) on-blockchain for data traceability. The framework involves a novel data-driven and rule-based keyframe extraction (DRKE) model to lightweight large-sized construction video in the nascent field of deep learning and blockchain combination. To define parameters for the DRKE model, specific construction rules (e.g., people’s unsafe behavior-based and people-based rules) have been pre-defined. This framework has been evaluated, and the results demonstrate its capability for effective video security storage, facilitating practical needs in construction management. The study extends existing research and provides a practical solution for large-sized construction video storage with security and lightweight considerations. The proposed video security storage and data lightweight process offers substantial benefits to construction management, such as streamlined accident investigation and accountability and improved on-site work efficiency, contributing to the smooth progress of construction projects.

Assessment of Causes Affecting Progress Schedules on Construction Investment Projects Funded by State Budget in Hanoi City, Vietnam

Background: Hanoi, the capital city, is the economic, political, and cultural center of Vietnam. Every year, the City’s Government always spends a large part of the budget on construction investment in order to create a basis for promoting its economic development and improving the residents living standards. However, in the process of implementing investment and construction, many projects were delayed, leading to the failure to achieve the desired investment efficiency. Objective: To research and evaluate the causes affecting the progress schedules of construction projects using public investment capital in Hanoi, the authors conducted a survey and used the F-AHP method to analyze data collected data in order to obtain objective and accurate results on the research problem. Methods: The causes affecting the progress of construction projects are classified into four groups, including subjective causes from project participants and objective reasons. Results: The results show that the causes of the project participants have a stronger influence than the objective causes in which the causes related to the owner and the causes related to the contractor have the highest influence. Conclusion: Based on projects ‘ progress schedules, the resources are mobilized, the parties work together to promote the development of the project.

Automated progress measurement using computer vision technology in UK construction

A critical concern with the UK’s construction project progress monitoring and control techniques is their dependency on data collection, which is time consuming and unproductive and may lead to various circumstances in managing projects. However, collecting and accurately analysing information from construction sites requires the development of technologies. As key artificial intelligence (AI) technology, computer vision (CV) is a powerful tool for big data analysis that can address the aforementioned challenges. This study explores the status of CV-based construction progress monitoring (CV-CPM) adoption and the main barriers to and incentives for its adoption within the UK construction sites. In this respect, after an extensive review of the literature covering the AI technology in construction management and the concept, function and usage of CV and its integration with construction progress monitoring, including its benefits and drivers and technical challenges, a questionnaire was administered to UK construction professionals to collect their perceptions. The study results indicated that construction practitioners were relatively aware of CV-CPM but lacked competencies and skills. CV-CPM has been perceived to be relatively better than the traditional approach. Implications such as the cost of implementation, lack of expertise and resistance to change were the major challenges in CV-CPM adoption. Meanwhile, technological development, decision making and competitiveness were classified as incentives for its adoption.

Research on the application of BIM technology in commercial building construction management

The development of information technology plays an important role in building engineering design, construction, and cost management. This is intended to support the smooth progress of construction projects by optimizing the entire construction process, reducing engineering costs, and improving construction efficiency. In order to further improve the development of this field, this study combines the application of building technology with the project construction management process based on Building Information Modeling (BIM). In response to the demand for multi-objective optimization, this study established a multi-objective optimization model with two stages: time cost and time resource balance, and utilized this model to optimize resource allocation and reduce construction costs. In order to solve this multi-objective solving problem, genetic algorithm was used to solve the model, and the optimal construction management plan was obtained, which is suitable for large commercial buildings. During the construction process, as the construction period progresses, the construction cost gradually increases. Through the optimal construction management plan of this study, the optimal construction period of the project was determined to be 438 days. Under this construction period, the cost of this phase of the project is 2712.32 million yuan. Compared to the project planning cost, the total cost decreased by 17.05%. This result indicates that through the collaborative work of construction management mode and BIM technology, the entire construction process of the project has been effectively optimized. In addition, the construction management model of this study provides valuable benchmarks for the development of large-scale construction projects. It demonstrates how to use BIM technology and optimization models to improve the construction process, and provides a reference for the future development of more advanced construction management technologies.

Assessing the COVID-19 Impact of Projects under Construction with Monte Carlo Simulation

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) in 2019 and the 2022 war in Ukraine have had profound global impacts on travel and logistics, disrupted the material supply chain, significantly influenced the cost and progress of construction projects, and further impacted the operational effectiveness of firms. Despite some existing studies providing valuable insights into the impact of COVID-19 on the construction industry, there remain research gaps that need to be addressed. Prior studies have mainly focused on the immediate impact factors of the pandemic, such as supply chain disruptions and workforce shortages, and strategies for effectively reducing or eliminating these risks. However, there is a need for research that delves into the long-term implications of these disruptions. So far, no relevant research has quantified the broader impact of the epidemic. Thus, this study aims to analyze the effects of the pandemic and the war on 136 construction industry professionals, their projects, and firms through literature review, questionnaire surveys, and expert interviews. The study compiles a list of significant risk factors for construction projects between 2019–2022, including their probability of occurrence, impact over time, and overall cost. The study also analyzes and discusses the impact of these high-risk factors as of 2022. To quantify the impact, cost, and level of exposure to these risks suffered by actual construction projects over this period, the Monte Carlo simulation method is introduced. This approach provides contractors with early prediction of risks and appropriate responses to mitigate risks.

Construction project management monitoring system using s-curve

Every construction project generally has a specific implementation plan and implementation schedule: when to start the implementation of the project, when to complete the project, how to do the project, and how to provide resources. Making a plan for a construction project always refers to the estimates that exist when the scheduled development plan is made. Therefore, problems can arise if there is a mismatch between the plan that has been made and its implementation. With the limited resources in the company, thorough and good planning is needed as a guide in carrying out the project to use resources efficiently and organize work to be completed according to the time specified in the contract. To achieve this goal, the manager controls the project with an s-curve by comparing the actual curve graph with the plan curve graph. The method to be used in monitoring the progress of construction projects is the s-curve. The use of the s-curve method is very supportive because it is suitable for monitoring project progress in terms of performance, cost, and timeliness of project work. The results of this study show that the construction project management monitoring website using the s-curve can create a cost budget plan that follows the contract document, a schedule plan, a weekly project report, and a project report recapitulation. The output results are displayed in the form of a Gantt Chart, and S-curves are completed with plan curve lines and realization curve lines. This project management monitoring website has a multi-user feature so that more than one user can use it.

A construction schedule management method of large-scale construction project based on BIM model

In order to overcome the problems of long response time and small number of manageable indicators existing in traditional construction project schedule management methods, a new construction schedule management method based on BIM model is designed in this paper. The construction progress data acquisition and decoding module circuit is set to complete the construction progress data acquisition, and the K-means algorithm is used to preprocess the construction progress data. First, the construction project progress is decomposed; then, the large-scale construction project is divided into different progress management levels by the WBS analysis method; a functional information module is established; the construction project progress data is imported into the BIM model; and finally, the BIM information function management of the method is realised. The experimental results show that the proposed method has low response time and multiple schedule management indicators, and the shortest response time of the proposed method is only 1.1 s.

A Quantitative Study of the Impact of Organizational Culture, Communication Management, and Clarity in Project Scope on Constructions’ Project Success with Moderating Role of Project Manager’s Competencies to Enhance Constructions Management Practices

The construction industry is considered a driver of economic growth, especially in developing countries. However, the successful completion of construction projects is a major challenge, due to the lack of competencies. The current study explores the effects of communication management practices, clarity in the scope of the construction project, and organizational culture to enhance project success. A project manager is essential in running a project smoothly and according to the schedule. Keeping in view the predominant role of the project manager, this study aims to find the moderating impact of manager competencies to improve the construction project routine and generate successful projects. A questionnaire survey was conducted to collect the data and determine how these variables influence construction project progress. The current research results show an excellent association between a construction project’s success and the discussed independent variables. Additionally, it was found that a competent project manager can play a better role in preventing the uncomfortable influences of independent variables on the dependent variable. The obtained outcomes highlight the importance of adequately handling organizational culture, communication management, and clarity to achieve project success. These outcomes are helpful for the professionals working in the construction sector to raise the project success rate and enhance their construction management capabilities.

An efficient energy measurement system based on the TOF sensor for structural crack monitoring in architecture

ABSTRACT With the continuous development of a society in which construction works are ubiquitous, investors often accelerate the progress of construction projects and may neglect to follow the proposed construction processes. As a result, construction works decrease in durability and become more susceptible to cracking, breakages, or collapse, resulting in significant damage to people and property. Meanwhile, labour to monitor the progress of works is often time-consuming, effortful, prone to errors, and vulnerable to risk. This study introduces a system that uses a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) consisting of a laser-ranging Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor module for structural crack monitoring in architecture. The proposed system collects data on the variation in amplitude of an existing crack as well as environmental factors that can adversely affect cracks such as temperature, humidity, and vibration. This aids the assessment of safety levels by providing warnings and remedies as quickly as possible, contributing to raising the safety level for workers and people living in the area, and minimizing potential damage. Test results demonstrate the following advantages: the device operates stably in extreme weather conditions; has an expected lifetime of more than ten years; and features high accuracy, long data transmission, and low-cost, low-power operation.

BIM integrated smart contract for construction project progress payment administration

In recent years few blockchain based progress payment methods have been proposed to improve the traditional payment process for construction projects. The blockchain based methods require the off-chain real world information to be connected to the blockchain which could be challenging for construction projects. This paper presents a novel building information modeling (BIM) integrated smart contract progress payment administration system, in which as-constructed BIM is used to link the real world with the blockchain. Results of a survey of construction professionals revealed that the proposed system has a significant potential for improving the traditional payment procedure by accelerating the process and by making the progress payments less prone to disputes, especially for lump sum projects. The results also indicate the potential of future research on semi-autonomous BIM integrated smart contract systems to accelerate the adoption of the BIM and smart contract technologies for progress payment administration within the construction sector.

Developing a Resilient Crisis Management Plan (CMP) for the Malaysian Construction Sector

Construction is a diverse and complex sector. It consists of projects with intricate activities and interfaces between stakeholders who undergo a series of development phases using numerous resources, integration of technologies, materials, and approaches. Theoretically, construction projects can be well planned. However, it is being exposed to unanticipated events or crises that could disrupt original plans, affecting organizations’ operation and progress of construction projects. Problems may even have the propensity to destroy the organization significantly. Considering the current paradigm of crisis, the Covid-19 outbreak that emerged in late 2019 has continuously left a lasting impact on the construction industry. As of August 2020, Covid-19 has spread to over 200 countries, and the number has increased beyond 100,000 cases in Malaysia. Regardless of Covid-19 has placed great stress on all aspects worldwide, it led to the closure of most construction businesses, causing contraction towards industry growth to the greatest to extend of -7.9%, the lowest since 1999. In this context, the effort to ensure the preparedness of the construction organizations against crisis has become an issue. Hence, this paper aims to structure a framework that consists of principles and processes which can recover and develop a resilient construction industry. The method used for this study is Systematic Literature Review of related journals gathered through WOS, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, reports, and relevant references from Government Authorised agencies circa 1998 to 2020. 4262 articles were identified, and 111 papers were subsequently selected for further analysis. Based on the findings, there are five major phases of CM, including prepare, prevent, respond, evaluate, and redesign. The proposed CM includes 4 elements and 2 outputs. The preliminary findings form the foundation for an extended investigation to offer a specific crisis management plan to guide the Malaysian construction industry, specifically in Klang Valley, to be resilient during plight.Keywords: Crisis, External Crisis, Crisis Management Plan, Construction Sector

CAPTURING THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS: A CASE STUDY OF PAKISTAN

The spread of COVID-19 has obstructed construction projects worldwide owing to disruptions in supply chain, restriction on the combine work and legislative enforcements. Construction projects from developing economies are more susceptible to these challenges. The aim of this research is to identify factors caused by COVID-19 impacting progress of construction projects and review tools to lessen its negative impact. Multistep methodology is adopted using semi-structured interviews with construction experts to identify factors affected the progress during COVID-19; and data collection from professionals to quantify the significance of each identified factor; Cronbach’s alpha for reliability and multiple regression to assess the effect of COVID-19 on progress of construction projects. The findings show that COVID-19 has left severe issues at the operational and financial levels. The remedies use to correct these issues will help policymakers from construction industry to improve existing strategic plans and develop new policies to manage the issues caused by COVID-19.

Discussion about the Application of Information Technology in Construction Project Management

With the development of society, modern information technology is gradually improved, and now it is widely used in various industries. As one of the industries widely concerned by society, the trends and trends of the construction industry have been widely discussed by the community. The integration of information technology into the management of construction projects can not only accelerate the progress of construction projects, but also ensure the normal operation of the construction process through scientific and effective management of the project. Although China’s information technology management technology has been improved a lot, but the mutual integration with the construction project, still need to spend a long period of friction.

Automated activity and progress analysis based on non-monotonic reasoning of construction operations

PurposeReal-time location sensing (RTLS) systems offer a significant potential to advance the management of construction processes by potentially providing real-time access to the locations of workers and equipment. Many location-sensing technologies tend to perform poorly for indoor work environments and generate large data sets that are somewhat difficult to process in a meaningful way. Unfortunately, little is still known regarding the practical benefits of converting raw worker tracking data into meaningful information about construction project progress, effectively impeding widespread adoption in construction.Design/methodology/approachThe presented framework is designed to automate as many steps as possible, aiming to avoid manual procedures that significantly increase the time between progress estimation updates. The authors apply simple location tracking sensor data that does not require personal handling, to ensure continuous data acquisition. They use a generic and non-site-specific knowledge base (KB) created through domain expert interviews. The sensor data and KB are analyzed in an abductive reasoning framework implemented in Answer Set Programming (extended to support spatial and temporal reasoning), a logic programming paradigm developed within the artificial intelligence domain.FindingsThis work demonstrates how abductive reasoning can be applied to automatically generate rich and qualitative information about activities that have been carried out on a construction site. These activities are subsequently used for reasoning about the progress of the construction project. Our framework delivers an upper bound on project progress (“optimistic estimates”) within a practical amount of time, in the order of seconds. The target user group is construction management by providing project planning decision support.Research limitations/implicationsThe KB developed for this early-stage research does not encapsulate an exhaustive body of domain expert knowledge. Instead, it consists of excerpts of activities in the analyzed construction site. The KB is developed to be non-site-specific, but it is not validated as the performed experiments were carried out on one single construction site.Practical implicationsThe presented work enables automated processing of simple location tracking sensor data, which provides construction management with detailed insight into construction site progress without performing labor-intensive procedures common nowadays.Originality/valueWhile automated progress estimation and activity recognition in construction have been studied for some time, the authors approach it differently. Instead of expensive equipment, manually acquired, information-rich sensor data, the authors apply simple data, domain knowledge and a logical reasoning system for which the results are promising.

Application Analysis of Computer Technology in Construction Project Schedule Control in Information Age

Construction industry is one of the pillar industries in China, which has made great contributions to China’s economic development. However, because the overall management level of the construction industry in China is still relatively low at present, the construction procedures of many projects are complex and involve many factors. In order to make the construction proceed smoothly, it is necessary to control the progress of construction projects reasonably. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the application of computer technology in construction project schedule control in the information age. In this paper, according to the actual situation, the project management software Project 2019 in computer technology is used to control and manage the progress of the project. Project 2019 can work out a set of optimal construction schedule within the specified time limit, compare it with the actual schedule, find out the deviation and its causes, make reasonable analysis and make corresponding adjustments. At the end of this paper, the construction projects controlled by the project management software Project 2019 are compared with those not used, and the actual effects of both are analyzed. The experimental results show that the project management software Project 2019 can effectively control the progress of the construction project reasonably, and can make corresponding adjustments according to the actual situation, which can accelerate the overall progress of the project by about 10%, which is of great significance for improving the existing construction project progress.
