Scaffolding patient agency: Conceptualising readers' cognitive work in the comic gutter.

A life-limiting illness can erode an individual's positive sense of self. Storytelling can help counteract this, through scaffolding patients' agency and supporting them in acting to change something which matters to them. This article explains how visual stories - comics - are used within the PATCHATT intervention to support the redevelopment of a person's agential self. Through the provision of a conceptual map, this article explores the gutter as a liminal space, arguing for the importance of the deep reader engagement which takes place there. It uses Bob's comic, a story used within PATCHATT, to explore how reflexivity and imagination work together within the liminal space of the gutter to stimulate and enhance palliative care patients' agential change leadership. It concludes by considering the implications of the argument put forward for palliative care practice.

Understanding mealtime behavioral problems in nursing home residents living with dementia: a group concept mapping approach

BackgroundPersons with dementia frequently experience mealtime behavioral problems that can result in reduced or lack of intake of food or fluids. Multiple underlying causes and expressions of mealtime behavioral problems complicate its interpretation and intervention, because problems originating from cognitive and functional decline and behavioral changes may interact. Healthcare professionals and family caregivers may encounter a variety of practical and moral dilemmas in dealing with these problems. We aimed at a better understanding of mealtime behavioral problems and related complex issues in nursing home residents with dementia from a daily practice perspective.MethodsWe used a mixed-method Group Concept Mapping approach in this study, and collected data online with a panel of 67 healthcare professionals, researchers and relatives from across The Netherlands. The participants contributed to either or all of the following phases: (1) the generation of ideas (brainstorm), (2) sorting, and (3) rating of the ideas. Subsequent phases included data analysis with Groupwisdom® software and interpretation of the results. Multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis resulted in a concept map visualizing the coherence and importance of ideas. Bridging values were calculated, with low values indicating a distinct, clear concept.ResultsBrainstorming resulted in 285 statements representing 85 ideas. The concept map visualized three categories capturing ten clusters which describe the management of mealtime behavioral problems, causes of mealtime behavioral problems, and expressions and interpretations of mealtime behavioral problems. Concepts reflecting direct consequences, ethical components, and considerations to handle challenging situations overlapped on the concept map with the highest bridging values (range 0.58–0.87).ConclusionThis study added to unraveling the complex nature of mealtime behavioral problems, as perceived in practice. It is recommended to comprehensively analyze all components in the management of these problems, in particular being aware of ethical factors and align care for residents with dementia accordingly.

Towards making EIA more human-centric: Demonstration in Nepal of a values crystallization approach to capture local shared values for scoping use

Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) are a critical component of planning and decision-making processes before projects are conducted, because they are used to forecast and inform mitigation of potential impacts on the local community, including its social, physical, and natural environments. Current EIA processes predominantly focus on issues that can be directly measured using objective methods, with mostly tokenistic inadequate use of suites of qualitative methodologies needed for identification and documentation of issues relating to community shared values. On the other hand, protests and tensions are known to easily arise which are related to such human values-based issues not being addressed. In this pragmatic study, a method is demonstrated which can bridge this gap, by capturing local community shared values in a well-defined manner and short time. The approach, called WeValue InSitu, enables local communities to construct their own bespoke group shared values statements in a specialized crystallization process, with outputs which are well-articulated proto-indicators. In this study we compare the outputs from two existing scoping reports of EIA in Nepal with the outputs from the values crystallization approach which we conducted with ten groups in a village in Nepal, and show that the latter brings out many more, and more localised, shared values of the community, and additionally reveals underlying interrelationships between values, producing conceptual maps for planning effective mitigations. Future studies can investigate whether the achievements of this method offer any advantages to existing qualitative methods in improving EIA-SIA scoping, and/or whether the hegemony of objectivism of institutions and proponents is an unsurmountable barrier.

Factors impacting curricula in maritime simulator-based education

AbstractThe International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) provides a foundational framework for maritime education and training (MET). However, variations in its interpretation across different nations and institutions lead to diverse teaching practices and strategies. This diversity stems from differences in national regulations, resources, cultures, and the perspectives of institutions and instructors. This study introduces a concept map to scaffold the key concepts influencing maritime simulator-based education. By examining both the education system and student factors, the concept map offers insights into these various factors through observations from simulator-based teaching sessions and discussions with maritime educators and students. This tool can help identify differences and highlight good practices. It is a valuable resource for stakeholders, promoting a novel approach to developing an effective, comprehensive, coherent maritime simulator-based education.

Using concept mapping to co-create implementation strategies to address maternal-child food insecurity during the first 1000 days of life.

Food insecurity (FI) has short- and long-term effects on maternal and child health, with persistent inequities within under-resourced communities of colour (e.g., Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Black). Interventions to mitigate maternal-child FI must engage the voices of under-resourced communities of colour to improve implementation and tackle socio-ecological drivers of inequities, leading to positive maternal-child outcomes. This exploratory sequential mixed-methods study aimed to co-create implementation strategies to tailor a culturally sensitive intervention to address FI during the first 1000 days of life in under-resourced communities of colour in Las Vegas. A Community Advisory Board (CAB) engaged in a two-step participatory process. First, through the concept mapping, hierarchical cluster analysis organized 125 strategies into seven thematic areas: policy and advocacy, access to food and resources, built environment, education across systems, social and peer support, cultural congruency and trust, and wellness and mental health. Second, through consensus-building, strategies were combined by similarity (n = 94) and excluded if unrelated to health and nutrition (n = 9). The CAB reached a consensus on 22 strategies classified across three socio-ecological levels. Examples of strategies at the community level (n = 16) included increasing utilization of federal nutrition assistance programmes; at the service level (n = 4), integrating FI screenings and referral coordination systems across services; and at the individual level (n = 2), providing mentorship, education, and support for families and moms. The co-creation of a culturally sensitive intervention to reduce inequities in maternal-child FI during the first 1000 days of life requires multi-level strategies across three socio-ecological levels in under-resourced communities of colour in Las Vegas.

Student engagement and accountability in flipped and traditional classrooms: A comparison of concept map and question and answer homework strategies

Flipped classroom structures are increasingly prevalent in higher education and facilitating student preparation is a necessary ingredient to maximize effectiveness of the approach. This research expanded upon a yearlong pilot study comparing two types of accountability homework in flipped and traditionally structured first year master’s level healthcare classrooms. Outcome measures included perceived learning, satisfaction, and usefulness of concept maps (CM) versus question-answer-rationale (QAR) homework. Study sample ( n = 77) participants were randomly assigned to either CM or QAR homework group for a period of 4 weeks. Then, participants completed the alternate homework type for a subsequent 4 weeks. Findings indicated that perceived learning, satisfaction, and usability of the method was significantly greater in the CM group as compared to the QAR group in both traditional and flipped classrooms. The use of accountability homework assignments is discussed for both classroom types.

The Effect of Concept Map-Based Education Given to Nursing Students on Medication Administration Self-Efficacy in Children: A Quasi-Experimental Study

This study was conducted as a control group, pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study between February 2024 and May 2024 with a total of 140 nursing students in the 3rd and 4th grades at a nursing school in the Western Black Sea Region of Turkey. This study was conducted as a control group, pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study between February 2024 and May 2024 with a total of 140 nursing students in the 3rd and 4th grades at a nursing school in the Western Black Sea Region of Turkey. Data were collected as pre-test and post-test using the “Introductory Information Form”, “Self-Efficacy Scale for Medication Administration in Children for Nursing Students” and “Scale for the Effectiveness of Concept Maps in Nursing Education ”. The nursing students in the training group (n=70) were given face-to-face training on drug administration in children based on concept mapping in the form of a powerpoint presentation in 4 sessions once a week. Nursing students in the control group (n=70) were not given any training. Chi-square, dependent sample t test and independent sample t test were used to analyze the data. In the post-test, nursing students in the training group had significantly higher scores on the Self-Efficacy Scale for Medication Administration in Children and the Effectiveness of Concept Mapping in Nursing Education Scale compared to the control group. It was found that the concept map-based education given to nursing students had positive effects on increasing the level of medication administration self-efficacy in children.

A strategic evaluation of BIM-driven information management in the context of ISO 19650-2 standard

PurposeThis paper presents an in-depth evaluation of BIM-driven information management in the context of ISO 19650-2. The study aimed to understand and evaluate the existing mechanisms and the recommended activities and tasks of collaborative information management, particularly as the Turkish AEC organizations are currently implementing ISO 19650-2.Design/methodology/approachThe study employed a qualitative research design based on information management stages of ISO 19650-2. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with purposefully selected professionals. The framework analyses were made with MAXQDA through conceptual coding to identify current drivers, challenges and incentives for BIM-driven information management. The frequencies of common themes, required tasks and semantic relationships were reported systematically and interpreted to provide a conceptual implementation map, practical insights and actionable recommendations.FindingsThe study results encompass strategies for establishing new tasks and implementation procedures to uphold business value by aligning information management standards with evolving project requirements, providing detailed and responsive EIRs, early use of CDEs, compliant production methods, clarity of roles and responsibilities, increased organizational capacity and capabilities, sustained planning and production quality and leveraging lessons learned.Originality/valueThe study provides evidence-based arguments and strategic insights for BIM-driven information management, focusing on the current implementation compatibilities with ISO 19650-2. Findings and discussions highlight the necessity of industry-wide transformations, reengineered activities/tasks and compliant information flows, which are crucial for adopting ISO 19650-2 and the formulation of national annex documents.

Understanding the Constraints Shaping Women’s Intentions to Stop Playing Community Sport

This study explored the types of constraints that inhibit women’s participation in community basketball. It investigated whether the perception of these constraints changes at different ages to understand how this impacts one’s intention to leave the sport of basketball. A mixed-methods approach was used. In phase 1, Concept Mapping examined the types of constraints faced by Australian women community basketball players. In phase 2, quantitative survey data were analyzed to understand how age and the constraints identified from phase 1 impacted on women’s intention to leave basketball. Results demonstrated that key types of constraints are a lack of playing opportunities and gender discrimination. Younger women were more likely to intend to leave basketball when they reported higher incidences of these constraints, indicating that they are more difficult to negotiate. Sport organizations must increase playing opportunities for young women and eradicate nuanced gender discrimination to improve the retention of younger women.

The institutionalisation of parliamentary party groups. Towards a concept

ABSTRACT Notable efforts have been made to apply the institutionalisation concept to legislatures, parties and party systems. In contrast, parliamentary party groups (PPGs) were either side-lined or bundled under the concept of institutionalised parliaments and parties, which implies some conceptual confusion. However, PPGs should be treated as distinct topic given their role in stabilising the parliamentary business in all modern assemblies. Encouraging research to close that gap, we introduce a framework to study the institutionalisation of PPGs for which we use illustrations from various polities. We suggest that highly institutionalised groups exhibit stable personnel, coherent legislative behaviour, structural differentiation, well-established procedural routines, and autonomy in terms of policy decision-making, leadership selection, and resources. Also, we examine PPGs as embedded institutions and provide a conceptual map for varying relationships with the institutionalisation of parliaments and parties. Finally, we point to a widely unexplored field for comparative research including investigations on democratisation.

Digital Teaching Materials of Logical Thinking - Oriented Exposition Text for X Graders of SMA/MA/SMK

This research aims to develop a logical thinking-oriented exposition digital teaching material product that is feasible and effective for Indonesian Language learning in grade X students of SMA/MA/SMK. This research uses a research and development method (Research and Development) with the ADDIE (Analysis Design Development Implementation Evaluation) model. Data collection in the study was carried out and analyzed descriptively, both quantitative and qualitative. The result of the design and development of this digital teaching material is a digital module in the form of pdf and a Flipbook consisting of a cover, concept map, learning objectives, until author biodata. It also contains materials in videos to practice listening, reading and writing that can be accessed in youtube by scanning the link. The results of product validation by language, material and media validators and practitioners stated that the digital teaching materials of logical thinking-oriented exposition texts for SMA/MA/SMK with a result of 80.79% mean "Feasible" to use. The results of the implementation of digital teaching materials for logical thinking-oriented exposition texts for 63 grade X students at SMAN 1 Gantar, SMAN 1 Gantar and MA Ma'had al-Zaytun, showed that there was a significant development between student learning outcomes before and after the use of digital teaching materials after being assessed using the T-Test (Paired sample Test), meaning "effective" for learning exposition text materials. Thus, digital teaching materials for logical thinking-oriented exposition texts for teachers and students of class X SMA/MA/SMK are feasible and effective in learning.

Concept mapping and students’ attitudes towards biology: Analysis of school location differences and attitude toward concept maps

Many secondary school students, especially those in rural settings do not view favorably biology subject. The predominant use of the teacher-centered approach is mostly cited as the determinant. This study, therefore, investigated the effect of Concept Mapping (CM) mapping on students’ attitudes based on school location and how students experienced the CM. The study used a quasi-experimental research with a pre-test and post-test control group design. The research sample consisted of 305 students from lower secondary schools. Data were collected using Biology Attitude and Attitude toward Concept Mapping Questionnaires and were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance, Multivariate Analysis of Variance, and Independent t-student test. The findings showed that the CM is more effective in fostering students' attitudes toward biology than the conventional methods of instruction. Students' attitudes towards biology when taught using the CM did not significantly differ between those in rural and urban areas. Students showed a positive attitude towards using CM as a learning tool regardless of school location. To enhance student attitudes toward biology, schools should integrate Concept Mapping (CM) into the curriculum and provide professional development for teachers to effectively implement this method. Resources and support should be allocated, especially to rural areas, to ensure equitable access to CM tools. Gathering and responding to student feedback will help refine the approach, while continuous assessment will track its effectiveness. Encouraging collaborative learning with CM can further engage students and improve their overall learning experience in biology and other science-related courses.

By drawing on Islamic principles related to knowledge acquisition, ethics, and comprehensive healthcare, this examination offers strategies for integrating Islamic perspectives into concept mapbased teaching approaches. Through harmonizing educational practices with Islamic ethos, medical educators can cultivate an environment that is culturally attuned and ethically rooted, fostering the development of healthcare professionals who embody compassion and integrity in serving their communities. Job demands and resources of information and technology use among teachers in Germany

Some teachers associate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) use with additional stress, which is investigated under the term technostress. Other teachers seem to be able to utilize the advantages and potentials of ICT. The extent to which advantages of ICT positively impact teachers’ health has mostly been neglected in previous studies, as well as the interplay of ICT-related factors. The study aims to compile influencing factors of ICT use on teachers’ health and to gain knowledge on the role of the benefits of ICT. Furthermore, information about the interplay of factors is to be obtained. The group concept mapping (GCM) method was used with 14 in-service German teachers from different school types. They compiled, sorted and rated factors related to teachers' health in the context of ICT use. The sorted factors were structured using non-metric multidimensional scaling, and cluster analysis. Seventy-eight unique factors were generated and divided into 9 clusters. The resulting concept map (CM) provides an overview of the various factors influencing the health of teachers using ICT and gives information about their interplay. In addition, the teachers rated clusters related to the positive effects on teachers’ health as more important than those related to negative effects. The results suggest that future studies should consider the positive effects of ICT on teachers' health more extensively. Limitations concerning the chosen method, sampling, and the need for further research are discussed.

UNLOCKING ALGEBRA: DEVELOPING STRATEGIC INTERVENTION MATERIALS TO BOOST GRADE VII COMPETENCIES

This study aimed to develop a Strategic Intervention Material (SIM) addressing the Least Learned Competencies of Grade 7 students in a public secondary school in Agusan del Sur, specifically focused on solving problems involving algebraic expressions during the 2021-2022 academic year. The research employed an educational design approach to systematically design, develop, and evaluate the intervention. The study identified the most preferred activities by student evaluators across the six facets of understanding, which included "Concept Map," "Represent Me," "My Facemask," "Tiles," "You Are X Years Old," and "Synthesis Journal." Furthermore, teacher validators rated the instructional quality of the SIM in terms of content, format, presentation, organization, and accuracy as very satisfactory, with an overall weighted mean of 3.63. These results highlighted extension activity and implementation of the SIM to address student’s difficulties in the least learned areas, contributing valuable insights for enhancing instructional materials in Mathematics education. Effect of concept mapping education on clinical decision-making in nursing students: A randomized controlled trial

Clinical decision-making is a critical and essential skill in clinical care. Nurses' proficiency in proper clinical decision-making significantly improves the quality of nursing care. As an active learning approach, concept mapping education plays a vital role in deep learning and applying critical thinking skills in clinical decision-making. This study aimed to investigate the impact of concept mapping on clinical decision-making in nursing students. The study was an experimental design with two groups, where participants were randomly assigned to the test group (25 students) or the control group (25 students). Data were collected using the clinical decision-making questionnaire. Based on relevant literature, the test group participated in eight concept mapping sessions lasting 60 to 90 minutes each, while the control group received traditional lecture-based education. Covariance analysis, excluding the effect of the pre-test, showed no significant difference (P=0.86, eta=0.01). Still, a paired t-test revealed a significant difference in the test group before and after the intervention (P<0.01). The results demonstrated that concept mapping education enhances clinical decision-making. Therefore, this teaching method, which promotes students' reflection, creativity, and decision-making skills, is recommended in nursing education. Concept mapping is an effective, innovative, and cost-efficient educational strategy.

Do concept maps prompt long-term memory in CLIL schoolchildren?

To address the learning disadvantages that students might face in a foreign language (L2) environment, this research explores the impact of concept mapping on enhancing long-term memory retention among Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) pupils. The research design is quasi-experimental and involves sixty Spanish primary education students non-randomly assigned from a Spanish-English semi-public bilingual school. The main hypothesis investigated is that concept maps serve as effective teaching instruments for enhancing long-term memory. During training, new information was systematically integrated with students’ prior knowledge to aid long-lasting retention of instructional content. The study examines the use of concept maps in a CLIL classroom as a complement to traditional teaching strategies and instructional design, focusing on improving the recall of previously learned information. Findings show that concept maps are reliable tools for assisting CLIL students whose mother tongue (L1) is not English, significantly reducing forgetfulness because of the precision of the transmitted information. The study shows the potential of concept mapping to improve learning outcomes in L2 settings by providing visual, accurate, and structured learning aids.

Determining user implementation needs for pharmacist-prescribed contraception using concept mapping: A participatory, multiple stakeholder approach

BackgroundAs of October 2024, 29 states and the District of Columbia allow community pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraceptives. Pharmacists have reported many challenges and barriers to service implementation. MethodsConcept mapping was used to gather insights from diverse stakeholders to identify resources to facilitate implementation of pharmacist-prescribed contraceptive services. Stakeholders included end-users (pharmacy managers, staff pharmacists) and decision-makers (pharmacy owners/executives). Participants' ideas for resources were collected via multi-stakeholder focus groups. Participants then rated each idea (i.e. statement) in terms of importance and feasibility (1 = not at all important/feasible, 4 = extremely important/feasible) and sorted ideas into groups based on similarity via an online survey. Sorting data were analyzed using multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis to develop a cluster map. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze rating data to develop a go-zone map, where statements rated above average in terms of both importance and feasibility are plotted in the “go-zone” and are considered the most actionable ideas. ResultsParticipants (focus groups n = 19, survey n = 48) generated 46 unique statements which created four clusters via multidimensional scaling: 1) implementation guidance for practice setup, 2) marketing resources, 3) billing and payment resources, and 4) appointment management. The majority of the statements (13 of 15) considered the most actionable were from the implementation guidance and appointment management clusters. ConclusionsStakeholders seek guidance on implementation, marketing, billing and payment, and appointment management. To increase the ability of community pharmacies to meet the contraceptive needs of patients, resources should be dedicated to creating tools and solutions to address these identified needs.
