THE NATIONAL-CULTURAL FEATURES OF THE CONCEPT “MEMORY” BY PHRASEOLOGICAL MEANS IN RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH LINGUOCULTURES

This article is a comparative analysis of the concept “Memory” in English and Russian linguistic culture. It studies the English and Russian phraseological means that verbalize the abovementioned concept. The purpose of the article is to consider phraseological units expressing the concept “Memory” in both languages. The relevance of the work is due to an increased interest in phraseological linguistic units, since they capture the archetypes of human consciousness. To achieve the object in view, the definitional analysis method and the descriptive method have been used. The phraseological units reflect the idea of the British and Russian nations about the concept of memory. The author emphasizes the fact that phraseological units have cultural differences in each language. It is assumed that this research will allow us to understand the culture and mentality of the English and Russian ethnic groups.

A COGNITIVE STYLISTIC ANALYSIS OF PINK FLOYD’S SONG LYRIC “TIME”

The objective of this paper is to describe how the content of song lyrics interacts with concepts of time, memory, and human experience and knowing how language and cognition are interrelated to create profound artistic expression in music through scheme theory, metaphor theory, and figures of speech as features of creativity and novelty in language use. The data was derived from the song entitled Time by Pink Floyd. The research method used in this study is qualitative descriptive. The result of this study is skillfully employing various figures of speech, such as metaphor, personification, and paradox, to convey the complexities of time, aging, regret, and the human experience. These literary devices engage the listener's intellect and emotions, prompting reflection on the passage of time and its impact on our lives. Furthermore, the song employs schema theory to activate the "Time that has passed" schema in listeners, encouraging them to reflect on the value of time and the importance of seizing precious moments before they slip away. The song's vivid imagery and metaphors serve as a bridge between abstract concepts and concrete experiences, making it a relatable and thought-provoking piece of art.

User Interface Evaluation Through Implicit-Association Tests

The implicit-association test (IAT) is a method for measuring subconscious associations between concepts in memory. It is widely used in social psychology research for assessing associations that people may be unable or unwilling to articulate, including those relating to race, gender, self harm, and risk-taking behaviour. We describe the motivation for adapting the IAT to user interface evaluation, including its potential to support rapid A/B testing that is amenable to online crowd-source dissemination, while also potentially reducing the validity risks caused by biases such as the good subject effect. We present a method (the UI-IAT) for conducting implicit association tests for A/B user interface evaluation, and we present results of two experiments demonstrating that, although the method can successfully discriminate between 'good' and 'bad' interfaces, its sensitivity is low. We discuss implications for practical use of the UI-IAT and for further work.

Adaptive Real Time Efficient Control Algorithm for Buildings Under Wind and Earthquake Forces

The study aims to tackle two key issues: the dependency of optimal controllers on available training data and their limited capability in managing multi-component structural responses. Real Time Fuzzy Logic Efficient Control system (RTFLEC) was developed to address these challenges. This system integrates a fuzzy logic inference system with a multi-verse optimization algorithm and utilizes real time training for real-time optimal controller derivation. It incorporates decentralized systems and optimal controller memory concepts and employs a magnetorheological damper (MR) for adjustable vibration control. Two case studies were conducted to evaluate the RTFLEC system's effectiveness. The first study focused on a three-story shear building under seismic loads, while the second analyzed a 76-story building facing multi-directional wind loads. The results showed that RTFLEC system reduced structural drifts by 28.33% and 51.5% during near-field and far-field earthquakes, respectively. It also decreased structural acceleration by 27.66% and 53% during near-field and far-field earthquakes, respectively. For wind-induced structures, it reduced story displacement by 37.5%, 14.5%, and 12% against across-wind, along-wind, and rotational forces, respectively. RTFLEC system demonstrated robust performance against uncertainties in external excitations, providing exceptional structural responses. Its key advantage lies in real-time adaptability, requiring minimal training data and computational processing. These findings highlight its significant potential in enhancing the performance of adaptive vibration control systems under unpredictable real-world loads.

Movement refrains of people with visual impairments: A post-phenomenological geography beyond space and place

Abstract The paper intervenes in current discussions within post-phenomenological geography. It analyzes the movement of people with visual impairments in order to develop an approach to post-phenomenology that emphasizes the in-betweenness of bodies in motion. Our perspective differs from phenomenological (and humanistic) geographies and from post-phenomenological geographies that are rooted in object-oriented ontology. They both rely on the differentiation between space and place, accept pointillism, treat places as points in space, time as exclusively chronological, and bodies as beings, not becomings. We analyze data from interviews with people with visual impairments. We first consider their movement through the perspective of humanistic (particularly phenomenological) geography. After acknowledging the limits of this approach, we turn to our actualized conception of post-phenomenological geography, which draws on Deleuze’s concepts of movement, path, refrain, and involuntary memory. With this conceptual repertoire, we go beyond the space-place dichotomy and highlight the in-betweenness and virtuality of movement. We explore difference-producing repetitions, which are constituted through refraining into paths. Our approach conceptualizing movement as “refraining into paths” is instrumental to studying the movement of people with visual impairment: It helps to dispute ableism, and it enriches the current discussion about post-phenomenological geography in its insistence on relations and becoming.

MEMORIAL URBAN NAMES OF UZHGOROD THROUGH THE PRISM OF ECOLINGUISTICS

At the current stage of the development of Ukrainian proper vocabulary, in particular in the post-Soviet period, the subsystem of modern Ukrainian urban names has undergone deeper and more systematic changes. According to linguists, this situation was caused by a distinct development trend such as de-ideologization. After all, the massive nature of the changes observed in Ukrainian urbanonymy, in particular in the western and central parts of Ukraine, is explained by the democratic procedure of replacing the proper names of streets, squares, parks, squares, microdistricts, etc., which, according to current Ukrainian legislation, is implemented on the basis of a resolution of the local council, and not the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, as provided by the procedure for changing the proper names of settlements. However, the democratic nature of the procedure for changing Ukrainian urban names, in our opinion, became the main reason for the insufficient or superficial linguistic examination of both urban neologisms and already traditional onims, which enables the functioning of many proper names of urban objects, the structure of which contradicts the norms of the Ukrainian language. Spelling errors are a characteristic type of violation of the norms of the Ukrainian literary language in the subsystem of Ukrainian urban names of the post-totalitarian era. Most often, when writing modern Ukrainian urban names, the rules of capitalization are violated. Urbanonymy is a specific onymic subsystem, which reacts extremely actively to social changes and is especially dependent on the political regime, which is connected with the memorial function of the names of inner-city objects. In this connection, the analysis of the concept of historical memory in urbanonymy becomes especially relevant. the negative influence of the environment affects the ecolinguistic state of various levels and even classes of the Ukrainian onymic vocabulary of the post-totalitarian era differently. Ukrainian anthroponymy, in particular people’s proper names and patronymic names, as well as oikonyms, urbanonyms, ergonyms, are adversely affected at the lexical level. Does Body Memory Exist? A Review of Models, Approaches and Recent Findings Useful for Neurorehabilitation.

Over the past twenty years, scientific research on body representations has grown significantly, with Body Memory (BM) emerging as a prominent area of interest in neurorehabilitation. Compared to other body representations, BM stands out as one of the most obscure due to the multifaceted nature of the concept of "memory" itself, which includes various aspects (such as implicit vs. explicit, conscious vs. unconscious). The concept of body memory originates from the field of phenomenology and has been developed by research groups studying embodied cognition. In this narrative review, we aim to present compelling evidence from recent studies that explore various definitions and explanatory models of BM. Additionally, we will provide a comprehensive overview of the empirical settings used to examine BM. The results can be categorized into two main areas: (i) how the body influences our memories, and (ii) how memories, in their broadest sense, could generate and/or influence metarepresentations-the ability to reflect on or make inferences about one's own cognitive representations or those of others. We present studies that emphasize the significance of BM in experimental settings involving patients with neurological and psychiatric disorders, ultimately analyzing these findings from an ontogenic perspective.

The Infrastructure of Traumatic Memory: Kazakhstan after Soviet Modernization Projects

Abstract The article discusses the features of the interaction of local, national, and global memory of the traumatic past and the current commemorative practices of Kazakhstan. The authors used the concept of transnational, multidirectional, and agonistic memory to make an extended interpretation of Kazakhstan’s postcolonial/post-Soviet situation as avoiding conflict. Traditionally, the traumatic discourse of memory in Kazakhstan is described in the context of post-Gulag analytics. On the other hand, some places as the Baikonur cosmodrome produce technogenic traumas. The fundamental concept of the article is a traumatic memory infrastructure which allows, first, to link the diversity of places of memory with the implementation of technological megaprojects in Kazakhstan; second, to identify their correlation with transnational memory practices; and finally, to show the Kazakhstani outline of trauma, which is still insufficiently represented in academic literature. The article uses empirical materials collected by the authors during field research in Kazakhstan.

Soil Moisture Memory: State‐Of‐The‐Art and the Way Forward

AbstractSoil moisture is an essential climate variable of the Earth system. Understanding its spatiotemporal dynamics is essential for predicting weather patterns and climate variability, monitoring and mitigating the effects and occurrence of droughts and floods, improving irrigation in agricultural areas, and sustainably managing water resources. Here we review in depth how soils can remember information on soil moisture anomalies over time, as embedded in the concept of soil moisture memory (SMM). We explain the mechanisms underlying SMM and explore its external and internal drivers; we also discuss the impacts of SMM on different land surface processes, focusing on soil‐plant‐atmosphere coupling. We explore the spatiotemporal variability, seasonality, locality, and depth‐dependence of SMM and provide insights into both improving its characterization in land surface models and using satellite observations to quantify it. Finally, we offer guidance for further research on SMM.

Architectural Support for Sharing, Isolating and Virtualizing FPGA Resources

FPGAs are increasingly popular in cloud environments for their ability to offer on-demand acceleration and improved compute efficiency. Providers would like to increase utilization, by multiplexing customers on a single device, similar to how processing cores and memory are shared. Nonetheless, multi-tenancy still faces major architectural limitations including: (a) inefficient sharing of memory interfaces across hardware tasks (HT) exacerbated by technological limitations and peculiarities, (b) insufficient solutions for performance and data isolation and high quality of service, and (c) absent or simplistic allocation strategies to effectively distribute external FPGA memory across HT. This article presents a full-stack solution for enabling multi-tenancy on FPGAs. Specifically, our work proposes an intra-fpga virtualization layer to share FPGA interfaces and its resources across tenants. To achieve efficient inter-connectivity between virtual FPGAs (vFGPAs) and external interfaces, we employ a compact network-on-chip architecture to optimize resource utilization. Dedicated memory management units implement the concept of virtual memory in FPGAs, providing mechanisms to isolate the address space and enable memory protection. We also introduce a memory segmentation scheme to effectively allocate FPGA address space and enhance isolation through hardware-software support, while preserving the efficacy of memory transactions. We assess our solution on an Alveo U250 Data Center FPGA Card, employing 10 real-world benchmarks from the Rodinia and Rosetta suites. Our framework preserves the performance of HT from a non-virtualized environment, while enhancing the device aggregate throughput through resource sharing; up to 3.96x in isolated and up to 2.31x in highly congested settings, where an external interface is shared across four vFPGAs. Finally, our work ensures high-quality of service, with HT achieving up to 0.95x of their native performance, even when resource sharing introduces interference from other accelerators.

Does Memory Reflect the Function of Smṛti? Exploring the Concept of the Recollecting Mind in the Cheng Weishi Lun

In the majority of Abhidharmic Buddhist schools, smṛti serves the crucial function of ensuring the recollection of past events and is thus conceptualized as memory in scholarly discourse nowadays. Nevertheless, upon closer examination of various doctrinal perspectives, the interpretation of smṛti diverges significantly among different schools. Notably, it is deemed to be omnipresent in every moment of perception within the Sarvāstivādin tradition, while in Yogācāra, it is regarded as a specific response to an experienced object. This paper seeks to delve into the concept of smṛti within the latter tradition, with a specific focus on the Cheng Weishi Lun (成唯識論, henceforth: CWSL). Drawing upon the foundational principles of Yogācāra doctrine, which posit the ālayavijñāna as an underlying substratum responsible for retaining past information, I contend that smṛti embodies a cognitive faculty that intensifies the apprehension of learned objects when they are present. Furthermore, I argue that smṛti serves as the inception point for a series of cognitive processes acquiring knowledge that helps decision-making. Additionally, I will demonstrate that the function of smṛti in the CWSL diverges from both traditional Buddhist conceptions of memory and contemporary understandings thereof.

Principal Component Analysis of Cognitive Executive Function: A Predictive Model of Academic Performance of Students in Mathematics in Secondary Schools

There is a growing interest from instructional scientists in using parameters of brain executive functions to unfold cognitive disorders, Mathematical Learning Difficulties (MLD), and assessment of learners’ academic performance. Thus, it is imperative to investigates, extracts and classify the major principal components of learners’ cognitive executive functions that predict academic performance of students in Mathematics and science related courses in secondary schools. An ex post facto quasi-experimental design was adopted for the study. Students’ cognitive profile was measured using a validated and reliable cognitive assessment Battery (CAB) application. There were significant positive correlations between cognitive executive functions and academic performance of students in Mathematics. The major components of the executive functions that accounted for substantial effects on academic performance of students in Mathematics include working memory, conceptual memory, short-term memory, inhibition, updating, focus attention, divided attention, auditory perception, and visual perception. Also, processing speed, shifting, planning, hand-eye coordination and response time accounted for moderate effects on academic performance of students in Mathematics. Consequently, instructors should reinforce learners’ cognitive processes using cognitive retraining programmes, personalized learning, differentiated instructional strategies for exceptional students, and offer therapeutic interventions on the identified cognitive parameters that could reduce extraneous cognitive loads. These could facilitate mental internalization of external perception during instructional delivery and learning.

Evapotranspiration in the Amazon Basin: Couplings, hydrological memory and water feedback

The hydrological cycle of the Amazon Basin is characterized by a multitude of interactions between the atmosphere and surface processes, involving several temporal and spatial scales. Evapotranspiration is a key variable in the water and energy balance, particularly in this watershed that is home to the world largest rainforest. This study analyzed evapotranspiration in the Amazon Basin using the concepts of Coupling (one way relationship between two variables), Memory (temporal permanence of a state or anomaly in the behavior of one variable) and Feedback (two way relationships between two variables), during a 62-year period (12/1959–11/2021). This study found that the seasonality of precipitation, mainly due to the South American Monsoon, determines when evapotranspiration is mainly driven by (or coupled with) net radiation at the surface or soil moisture. Moreover, in the regions where seasonality of precipitation is strong, the previous hydroclimatic conditions due to hydrological memory (reaching just over 90 days in shallow soils) influences the evapotranspiration during the relatively dry season. Regarding water feedback, this study found that the dependence of seasonal precipitation of the Amazon Basin from their hydrobiological processes (fraction of precipitation recycled by Amazonian evapotranspiration) increases with the distance from the Atlantic Ocean, mainly during the non-monsoonal circulation. This process is particularly remarkable in the Amazon-Andes transition zone. However, the spatial pattern and height of water recycled in this watershed is mainly determined by the dominant circulation pattern of atmospheric fluxes in each season.

‘I Said I’m Young You Know I Can Plan Something Good You Know’: Understanding Language and Migration Through Time

Abstract Applied linguistics has started to consider the importance of time for the understanding of meaning-making, for example in the conceptualization of chronotopes, or in stressing the relevance of speed and entrepreneurial views of the self for migrants. This study takes a step ahead by starting from the concept of memory as mobile, following Michel de Certeau (1990), and looking at the different ways in which the experience of time plays a role in living and recounting migration. Focusing on the journey of a young African from Italy to Germany and then reluctantly back to Italy, this article points to the relevance of time as projected (marked by [un]awareness of possible developments), personal (based on relationality), and influenced by concrete circumstances (events and processes). The findings also unveil tensions between planning and the unforeseen for tactics concerning language, highlighting the role of future projections.

Reinhart Koselleck’s Personal Sluices of Memory and Sediments of Experience

The article analyses selected aspects of the biography of Reinhart Koselleck (1923–2006), a German historian and theoretician of history. In particular, it brings to the fore significant traces of the Second World War experiences of the author of Kritik und Krise. Further, it looks at their influence on Koselleck’s critical approach to the concept of collective memory and on the anti-utopian thrust of his historical theory.

Natasha Soobramanien's Aesthetic of Archipelagic Memory: A Literary Methodology of Political Solidarity

In May 2022 the novel Diego Garcia, coauthored by Natasha Soobramanien and Luke Williams, was published, to immediate critical acclaim. As its title suggests, the text reflects on the violent history of the annexation of the Chagos archipelago. However, the novel's aim is not simply to raise awareness on this issue but also to engage in an in-depth consideration on how to care for and write about other people's political struggles. Indeed, in Diego Garcia, literary experimentations actively express the text's political concerns and reflections on solidarity. This article argues that some of the clues for understanding Diego Garcia's aesthetic innovations as a methodology for social justice can be found in Soobramanien's debut novel, Genie and Paul (2012), a postcolonial rewriting of Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre's famous novel Paul et Virginie (1789). The two novels share a profound interest in denouncing inequality as a consequence of capitalism and colonialisation, and importantly also share a geographical location within the Mascarene archipelago. The article turns to the archipelagic thought and its Glissantian filiation to explicate these correspondences and develop the concept of archipelagic memory as a reading methodology for grasping together both the texts’ political intentions and aesthetic innovations. In doing so, it argues that archipelagic memory is an aesthetic of memorialization, which cultivates equality by drawing connections between local events and global systems, and demonstrates that the text's considerations of Indian Ocean geopolitics illuminate the archipelago's potential as a methodology of political solidarity.

Memórias interculturais e as crônicas sobre Egito e o Sudão na Revista Moderna – Magazine Brasileiro em 1898

The article analyzes the concept of intercultural memory identified in the chronicles about Egypt and Sudan published in Revista Moderna: Magazine Brasileiro in 1898. Some are travel chronicles, especially the one referring to Egypt, and others are narratives about the occupation of Sudan and surrounding areas by the British. Reading the texts, we chose to make use of discourse analysis and the concept of intercultural memory to discuss the perceptions of these Portuguese chroniclers about Egypt and Sudan.

The Multidirectional Memory of Iraqi Holocaust: A Study of Yazidi Genocide in Dunia Mikhail’s The Bird Tattoo

The present study examines Dunia Mikhail’s The Bird Tattoo (2023) as trauma fiction that contributes to the concept of memory in trauma studies. The study argues that Mikhail’s novel brings to the fore a history of subjugation and victimization inscribed upon the historical body of Sinjar and Nineveh’s memory like a tattoo. It further argues that The Bird Tattoo’s representation of different stories of suffering functions as a reflection of Michael Rothberg’s concept of multidirectional memory, which effectively features colonial trauma studies. This argument is discussed alongside the poetics that the novelist in question relies heavily upon to project the bloody and overwhelming genocide committed by ISIS against Iraqi inhabitants during its terrorist existence in Nineveh during and after 2014. According to this context, the study aims to answer the following questions: how does Mikhail weave a coherent narrative structure in which raw materials are fueled by bloody conflict; and what is the function of such trauma fiction? These questions are answered through a critical approach that scrutinizes the aspects of colonial trauma with reference to the content and form of The Bird Tattoo.

Spontaneous eye movements reflect the representational geometries of conceptual spaces

Functional neuroimaging studies indicate that the human brain can represent concepts and their relational structure in memory using coding schemes typical of spatial navigation. However, whether we can read out the internal representational geometries of conceptual spaces solely from human behavior remains unclear. Here, we report that the relational structure between concepts in memory might be reflected in spontaneous eye movements during verbal fluency tasks: When we asked participants to randomly generate numbers, their eye movements correlated with distances along the left-to-right one-dimensional geometry of the number space (mental number line), while they scaled with distance along the ring-like two-dimensional geometry of the color space (color wheel) when they randomly generated color names. Moreover, when participants randomly produced animal names, eye movements correlated with low-dimensional similarity in word frequencies. These results suggest that the representational geometries used to internally organize conceptual spaces might be read out from gaze behavior.

Memory as a Universal Thinking Machine

The present article is designed to reassess the intrinsic values of using memory in the process of language acquisition and language learning, with a focus on the four skills – reading, writing, listening, and speaking – as the building blocks in achieving the best communication goals. According to researchers like Mary Carruthers, Janine Rider, or Lambert Schenkel, there are people who possess a retentive memory, and others who excel in the power of memory. One way or another, memory gives us the ability that generates knowledge, and, by the same token, enables us to speak, read, and write effectively and logically. The sustaining pillars of this monumental edifice are, as touted by medieval thinkers, the concept of memory as a universal thinking machine, as well as (according to more recent researchers) the power of working memory, which can work wonders when we know how to hold and manipulate knowledge. The study of memory from a historical perspective and reflected in world literature can give us an exhaustive frame of reference and the benefits that result in turning accumulated knowledge into accumulated learning.
