Urinary metals and their associations with DNA oxidative damage among e-waste recycling workers in Hong Kong

Recycling electronic waste (e-waste) poses risks of metal exposure, potentially leading to health impairments. However, no previous study has focused on this issue in Hong Kong. Therefore, from June 2021 to September 2022, this study collected urine samples from 101 e-waste workers and 100 office workers in Hong Kong to compare their urinary levels of metals using ICP-MS. Among the 15 included metals (with detection rates above the 70 % threshold), eight showed significantly higher urinary concentrations (unit: μg/g creatinine) in e-waste workers compared to office workers: Li (25.09 vs. 33.36), Mn (1.78 vs. 4.15), Ni (2.10 vs. 2.77), Cu (5.81 vs. 9.23), Zn (404.35 vs. 431.52), Sr (151.33 vs. 186.26), Tl (0.35 vs. 0.43), and Pb (0.69 vs. 1.16). E-waste workers in Hong Kong generally exhibited lower metal levels than those in developing regions but higher than their counterparts in developed areas. The urine level of 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) was determined by HPLC-MS/MS, and no significant difference was found between the two groups. Multiple linear regression models revealed no significant association between individual metal and urinary 8-OHdG concentrations. However, the metal mixture was identified to marginally elevate the 8-OHdG concentrations (1.12, 95 %CI: 0.04, 2.19) by quantile g‑computation models, with Mn and Cd playing significant roles in such effect. In conclusion, while the metal levels among Hong Kong e-waste workers compared favorably with their counterparts in other regions, their levels were higher than those of local office workers. This underscores the need for policymakers to prioritize attention to this unique industry.

Inflammation as a pathway for heavy metal-induced liver damage—Insights from a repeated-measures study in residents exposed to metals and bioinformatics analysis

BackgroundEpidemiological studies on heavy metal exposure and liver injury are predominantly cross-sectional, lacking longitudinal data and exploration of potential mechanisms. MethodWe conducted a repeated-measures study in Northeast China from 2016 to 2019, involving 322 participants. Linear mixed models (LMM) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were employed to explore the associations between individual and mixed blood metal concentrations [chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), vanadium (V), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb)] and liver function biomarkers [alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), albumin (ALB), globulin (GLB), total protein (TP)]. Mediation and enrichment analyses were used to determine whether the inflammatory response is a critical pathway for heavy metal-induced liver damage. ResultWe obtained a total of 958 observations. The results from LMM and BKMR indicated significant associations between individual and mixed heavy metals and liver function biomarkers. Longitudinal analysis revealed associations between Cd and the annual increase rate of ALT (β = 2.61; 95% CI: 0.97, 4.26), the annual decrease rate of ALB (β = −0.21; 95% CI: −0.39, −0.03), Mn and the annual increase rate of GLB (β = 0.38; 95% CI: 0.05, 0.72), and V and the annual decrease rate of ALB/GLB (β = −1.15; 95% CI: −2.00, −0.31). Mediation analysis showed that high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) mediated the associations between Cd and AST, TP, with mediation effects of 27.7% and 13.4%, respectively. Additionally, results from Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes enrichment analyses supported the role of inflammatory response pathways. ConclusionOur findings indicate that heavy metal exposure leads to liver damage, with the inflammatory response potentially serving as a crucial pathway in this process. This study offers a novel perspective on understanding heavy metal-induced liver injury and provides insights for preventive measures against the health damage caused by heavy metals.

Heavy Metal-Related Health Risk Assessment of Cultivated Plants Around a Cement Factory in Sokoto North Western, Nigeria

The pollution of the environment by cement manufacturing companies is becoming a global concern, particularly in developing nations. This study assessed the levels of heavy metals and their associated health risks in sugarcanes (Saccharum officinarum), tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum), and almonds (Prunus dulcis) cultivated in the vicinity of a cement factory in Sokoto, Nigeria. Samples of these plants were collected, treated, and then assayed for lead (Pb), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and zinc (Zn) using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The values obtained were compared against the permissible limits established by the World Health Organization (WHO), and these results were used to estimate the potential health risks associated with consuming these plants. The findings revealed that both the Solanum lycopersicum and Saccharum officinarum contained non-tolerable levels of Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn, while Prunus dulcis had non-tolerable levels of Zn only. Additionally, the concentrations of individual heavy metals in each of the three plant species showed a significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) from the respective WHO standards. The estimated daily intake (EDI) and target hazard quotient (THQ) for all the heavy metals were within the recommended limits, except for the EDI of Pb in Saccharum officinarum and the THQ of Pb in Solanum lycopersicum. The health risk index (HRI) for all the heavy metals in the three plants exceeded the tolerable limit (> 1). These findings indicate that daily consumption of these plants may pose health hazards. Therefore, the practice of cultivating plants in the vicinity of cement factories should be discouraged.

Heavy metals assessment for sustainable management in estuaries of Ba Ria - Vung Tau province

Heavy metal concentration in the aquatic environment of estuaries is a significant environmental concern with potential consequences for ecosystems and human health. Heavy metals are naturally occurring elements that can enter aquatic environments through both natural processes and human activities. The interplay between natural processes and human activities, particularly urbanization and industrialization, often exacerbates heavy metal pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Some of the most common heavy metals of concern in estuarine pollution include arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe). Based on the results of two surveys in rainy and dry seasons, the paper aims to assess the concentrations of heavy metals in the estuarine environment of Ba Ria - Vung Tau Province, Vietnam, to understand the extent of contamination and its potential impacts on the ecosystem and human health. The average concentrations As, Cd, Hg, Pb, Zn, and Fe were 2.01, 0.024, 0.028, 1.63, 4.71, and 492.9 µg/L in water, and 6.70, 0.175, 0.060, 11.78, 41.94, and 3,108.9 mg/kg in sediment, respectively. Heavy metal concentrations in water have an increased trend during the rainy season. In contrast, values in sediment exhibit an opposite pattern, which can be explained by various environmental factors and processes. For water and sediment quality, individual metals, and overall metal contamination levels (the contamination factor - Cf, contamination degree - Cd, and metal pollution index - MPI) may appear to be low, whereas the assessment of the combined effects of multiple metals (Metal quality index - MI > 1) indicates that there is a potential risk to aquatic life in the estuaries. This assessment may underscore the importance of considering not only individual metal concentrations but also their cumulative effects when evaluating water and sediment quality and making decisions regarding protecting aquatic ecosystems. Further investigations and measures may be needed to mitigate potential harm to aquatic organisms and for sustainable management in estuaries.

Prospective Study on the Association Between Blood Heavy Metal Levels and Pulmonary Function in University Students from a Medical College in Shandong Province, China.

This study aimed to examine the blood concentrations of selected heavy metals, their corresponding pulmonary functions, and their interrelationship with university students. This prospective study, conducted from September 2019 to September 2020, encompassed 593 university students. Participants completed self-administered questionnaires regarding demographic factors and underwent lung function testing and blood mercury analysis at two distinct intervals: an initial assessment and a follow-up examination. Pulmonary function was assessed using Forced Vital Capacity, Forced Expiratory Volume in one second, and Peak Expiratory Flow. The blood concentrations of various heavy metals were determined through inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Notable disparities in pulmonary function emerged among university students when categorized by gender, Body Mass Index, physical activity, and seafood consumption frequency, all showing statistical significance (p<0.05). Blood levels of Pb, Mn, Co, and Ni exhibited diverse patterns and extents of correlation with pulmonary function (p<0.05 in each instance). Specifically, a positive correlation was observed with blood Pb levels, while Mn, Co, and Ni levels were inversely correlated with pulmonary function (p<0.01 for both observations). This study uncovered significant and complex relationships between the blood concentrations of individual heavy metals and pulmonary function in university students. These findings highlight the need for further research to elucidate these associations in greater detail.

Comparison of leaching behaviour of heavy metals from sediments sampled in sewer systems - environmental and public health aspect.

The article analyzes the content of heavy metals and standard physical as well as chemical pollution indicators in different types of sediments from stormwater, combined sewer and sanitary sewer systems. Nickel, lead, chromium, copper, zinc and cadmium, as well as standard physical and chemical pollution indicators, were determined in sewage sediments. Aqueous extracts of sediments samples, taken from storm water sewer inlet sediments traps, storm sewers, sanitary sewers and combined sewers, were prepared in accordance with PN-EN 12457-2:2006. After mineralization, the concentrations of the metals: nickel, lead, chromium, copper, zinc and cadmium in the extracts were determined using the inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy technique. The results were analyzed with a non-metric multidimensional scaling algorithm. The heavy metal content was variable depending on the sediments collection site. The heavy metals nickel, lead, chromium, copper, zinc and cadmium were found in the sediments from stormwater inlets, storm sewer and sanitary sewer channels, with variability in the concentration of individual metals. The sediments from the flushing of sanitary sewers and combined sewers did not contain cadmium. The content of heavy metals in sediments varied depending on the sampling location and type of sewer system, indicating the need for detailed monitoring to identify the sources of emissions. Sediments from stormwater sewers have higher concentrations of heavy metals, with those from sewer inlets showing zinc concentrations exceeding regulatory limits, highlighting the variability and potential environmental impact of different sewer systems.

Cadmium as an Endocrine Disruptor That Hinders the Reproductive and Developmental Pathways in Freshwater Fish: A Review

Cadmium (Cd) is a non-essential element with sub-lethal effects even at low concentrations. The persistent nature of Cd and its tendency to bioaccumulate eventually create harmful effects on water biota, including fish. Cd affects various aspects of hormonal action in fish since it bioaccumulates in the endocrine system and hinders the synthesis, secretion, and metabolic activity of hormones, causing severe damage along the hypothalamus–pituitary–gonadal axis. Linking reproductive and developmental impairments in fish with ecologically relevant concentrations of individual metals can be challenging due to the complexity of aquatic ecosystems. This review deliberated the significant and novel trends of toxicological difficulties and approaches, including elucidating environmental sources’ bioavailability and Cd-induced toxic effects in freshwater fish. Both acute and chronic exposure to Cd can cause a range of adverse effects, such as growth inhibition, impaired reproductive capacity, endocrine disruption, and developmental abnormalities in freshwater fish, as evidenced by the present review. These investigations support the concept of Cd as a naturally available pollutant that causes irreversible damage in fish. These findings will help to understand the etiology of environmental circumstances that pose substantial dangers to fish health and are also crucial for preventing and treating exposure-related reproductive disturbances in freshwater fish due to environmental pollution.

Study of the Chemical Composition of Soil in the Natural-Technogenic Territory Aidarken

The article presents the results of an analysis of the content of microelements in the soils of the biogeochemical territory of Aidarken. Soil samples for analysis were taken from the top layer of soil cover (0-20 cm) at 3 points in the study area. Chemical analyzes for fertility elements (gross content of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, humus, absorption capacity, carbonate content, pH) and analysis for mechanical composition were carried out in the laboratory of the Republican Soil-Agrochemical Station of the Kyrgyzgiprozem State Research Institute under the Ministry of Agriculture and Mineral Resources of the Kyrgyz Republic. The soils of the studied areas belong to the following types: dark Turanian gray soils and mountain brown dry-steppe soils. Antimony, as an accompanying element of mercury, is above the maximum permissible concentration in all areas of the soil cover. High concentrations of individual heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn) were found in the tailings area.

Association of prenatal essential metal exposure with newborn mitochondrial DNA copy number: Results from a birth cohort study

Imbalance or deficiencies of essential metals can lead to oxidative stress, that can damage mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) molecule. Knowledge on effects of exposure to essential metals and their mixture remains limited. We aimed to evaluate individual and joint associations of prenatal essential metals with neonatal mtDNA copy number. We recruited 746 mother-newborn pairs from a birth cohort study conducted in Wuhan City, China, and collected trimester-specific urine and cord blood samples. We measured the concentrations of seven urinary essential metals, include zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), and chromium (Cr), using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and measured cord blood mtDNA copy number using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We estimated the trimester-specific associations of individual essential metal concentrations with mtDNA copy number using a multiple informant model, and assessed their joint association using weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression. For individual essential metal, a doubling of maternal urinary Zn concentrations during the second trimester was associated with a 7.47% (95% CI: 1.17–14.17%) higher level of neonatal mtDNA copy number. For the essential metal mixture, one-unit increased in the WQS index of the essential metals mixture during the second trimester resulted in a 10.41% (95% CI: 3.04–18.30%) increase in neonatal mtDNA copy number. Our findings suggest that exposure to both Zn and essential metal mixture during the second trimester is associated with a higher neonatal mtDNA copy number. Further research should assess whether mtDNA copy number is associated with child health.

Accumulation of Heavy Metals in the Needles of Scots Pine of the Semipalatinsk Pre-Irtysh Region and Burabay National Park

Relict bogs in the northeastern area of the Republic of Kazakhstan are located in close proximity to sources of heavy metal pollution – non-ferrous metal ore mining and processing facilities, and highways. Monitoring of heavy metal transport in the air by means of a bioindicator such as Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) is relevant for preventing the damaging effects of heavy metals on the population living in this region. The purpose of this article is to study pine needles (Pinus sylvestris L.) on the territory of the Semipalatinsk Irtysh region and the Burabay National Park to identify the features of the accumulation of heavy metals carried by atmospheric air flows, depending on the age of its formation. To determine the content of chemical elements in needles of the first, second and third year of formation from six experimental plots mass spectrometry method ISO 17294-2׃2003 was used. Its results made it possible to conduct a primary analysis of the accumulation of heavy metals in the needles of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) depending on the year of its formation. General scientific methods were also used in the analytical selection of the scientific literature to formulate the objectives of the experiments and to compare the results obtained with those of other authors. Experimental studies revealed a direct correlation between the increase in concentrations of individual metals and the age of the needles. Furthermore, an increase in concentrations of individual chemical elements has been detected in the conifers of the second year of formation. The findings can be used for further scientific research on the use of pine needles (Pinus sylvestris L.) as a bioindicator, the impact of the heavy metal composition of the north-east of Kazakhstan on plant organisms, but also used in practice to monitor the state of the environment and the management of forests.&#x0D;

Ecological and human health risk assessments of cyanotoxins and heavy metals in a drinking water supply reservoir.

Human beings are frequently exposed to a mixture of chemical pollutants through the ingestion of contaminated drinking water. The present study aimed to assess the ecological and human health risks associated with the contamination of cyanotoxins and heavy metals in a drinking water supply reservoir, the Tri An Reservoir (TAR), in Vietnam. Results demonstrated that the concentrations of individual heavy metals varied in the following order: iron (Fe) > lead (Pb) > arsenic (As) > zinc (Zn). Although the ecological potential risk of heavy metals was low during the study period, the concentration of Fe sometimes exceeded the Vietnamese standard for drinking water. Toxic cyanobacteria and microcystins (MCs) frequently occurred in the TAR with the highest density of 198.7 × 103 cells/mL and 7.8 μg/L, respectively, indicating a high risk of health impacts to humans. The results of the study indicate that exposure to heavy metals does not pose any non-carcinogenic health risks for both adults and children. However, the contamination of MCs in the surface water posed a serious disease enhancement to both adults and children through direct ingestion and dermal absorption.

Prenatal metal levels and congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract: The Japan Environment and Children's Study

BackgroundPrenatal exposure to metal elements has been reported as a potential risk factor for congenital malformation. However, studies on the relationship with congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are very scarce. MethodsParticipants of a prospective cohort from the Japan Environment and Children's Study, conducted at 15 research centers, were recruited between January 2011 and March 2014. The exposure factors were concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), selenium (Se), and manganese (Mn) measured from maternal whole blood in the second or third trimester. The primary outcome was CAKUT diagnosed during the first three years of life, which was classified into isolated cases and complicated cases accompanied by extrarenal congenital defects. To conduct a nested case–control design within the cohort, we selected 351 isolated cases with 1404 matched controls, and 79 complicated cases with 316 matched controls. ResultsA logistic regression model was used to examine the associations between individual metal concentrations and each subtype of CAKUT. A higher level of Se was associated with an increased risk of isolated CAKUT (adjusted odds ratio [95 % confidence interval]: 3.22 [1.33–7.77]). Meanwhile, higher levels of Pb and Mn were associated with a reduced risk of the complicated subtype (0.46 [0.24–0.90] and 0.33 [0.15–0.73], respectively). A Bayesian kernel machine regression model accounting for mixed effects of multiple metals further demonstrated that a higher level of Mn alone was significantly associated with a reduced occurrence of the complicated subtype. ConclusionsUsing a stringent statistical approach, the present study demonstrated that a higher Mn concentration in the maternal blood was associated with a lower risk of complicated CAKUT in offspring. Further cohort and experimental studies are needed to verify the clinical impact of this finding.

The role of systemic inflammation and oxidative stress in the association of particulate air pollution metal content and early cardiovascular damage: A panel study in healthy college students

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has been associated with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. However, the effects of toxic metals in PM2.5 on cardiovascular health remain unknown. To investigate the early cardiovascular effects of specific PM2.5 metal constituents at the personal level, we conducted a panel study on 45 healthy college students in Caofeidian, China. Personal exposure concentrations and cardiovascular effect markers were monitored simultaneously within one year in four study periods. Four linear mixed-effects models were used to analyze the relationship between personal exposure to PM2.5 and 15 metal fractions (Al, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Cd, Sb, and Pb) with soluble CD36 (sCD36), C-reactive protein (CRP), and oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OX-LDL) levels, heart rate, and blood pressure. The concentrations of most individual metals (Mn, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Mo, Cd, Sb and Pb) were the highest in winter. Meanwhile, there were significant differences in inflammatory (sCD36 and CRP) and oxidative stress (OX-LDL) markers in the serum of participants over the four seasons. In particular, the estimated effects of personal metal exposure (such as V, As, Se, Cd, and Pb) on sCD36 and pulse pressure (PP) levels were consistently significant across the four LME models. A significant mediating role of sCD36 was also found in the relationship between personal exposure to Zn and Cr and changes in PP levels. Our findings provide clues and potential mechanisms regarding the cardiovascular effects of specific toxic constituents of PM2.5 in healthy young adults.

Correlates of whole blood metal concentrations among reproductive-aged Black women.

Metals may influence reproductive health, but few studies have investigated correlates of metal body burden among reproductive-aged women outside of pregnancy. Furthermore, while there is evidence of racial disparities in exposure to metals among U.S. women, there is limited research about correlates of metal body burden among Black women. To identify correlates of whole blood metal concentrations among reproductive-aged Black women. We analyzed cross-sectional data from a cohort of 1664 Black women aged 23-35 years in Detroit, Michigan, 2010-2012. We collected blood samples and questionnaire data. We measured concentrations of 17 metals in whole blood using inductively-coupled plasma-mass spectrometer-triple quadrupole and total mercury using Direct Mercury Analyzer-80. We used multivariable linear regression models to identify sociodemographic, environmental, reproductive, and dietary correlates of individual metal concentrations. In adjusted models, age was positively associated with multiple metals, including arsenic, cadmium, and mercury. Education and income were inversely associated with cadmium and lead. Current smoking was strongly, positively associated with cadmium and lead. Alcohol intake in the past year was positively associated with arsenic, barium, copper, lead, mercury, vanadium, and zinc. Having pumped gasoline in the past 24 h was positively associated with cadmium, chromium, and molybdenum. Having lived in an urban area for the majority of residence in Michigan was positively associated with arsenic, lead, and nickel. Higher water intake in the past year was positively associated with several metals, including lead. Fish intake in the past year was positively associated with arsenic, cesium, and mercury. We also observed associations with body mass index, season, and other environmental, reproductive, and dietary factors. We identified potential sources of exposure to metals among reproductive-aged Black women. Our findings improve understanding of exposures to metals among non-pregnant reproductive-aged women, and can inform policies in support of reducing disparities in exposures. There are racial disparities in exposures to metals. We analyzed correlates of blood metal concentrations among reproductive-aged Black women in the Detroit, Michigan metropolitan area. We identified sociodemographic, anthropometric, lifestyle, environmental, reproductive, and dietary correlates of metal body burden. Age was positively associated with several metals. Education and income were inversely associated with cadmium and lead, indicating socioeconomic disparities. We identified potential exposure sources of metals among reproductive-aged Black women, including smoking, environmental tobacco smoke, pumping gasoline, living in an urban area, and intake of alcohol, water, fish, and rice.

Toxic metal pollution of aquatic ecosystems of European Union nature protection areas in a region of intensive agriculture (Lake Gopło, Poland)

The paper presents the results of research into toxic metal concentrations in the surface layer of bottom sediments in Lake Gopło. The research objectives were to identify the levels and spatial variability of Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni, Cr, As and Hg concentrations, their potential sources and the determinants of pollution levels. Metal contamination of the sediments was assessed using the geoaccumulation index (Igeo), pollution load index (PLI) and ecological risk index (RI). Chemometric methods (Pearson correlation, principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were used to determine the relationship between sampling sites and concentrations of toxic metals, thereby identifying the sources of contamination. The research found that grain-size composition, carbonate content and organic matter content in the bottom surface sediments of Lake Gopło are all characterised by low diversity. Therefore, the lithological features of the sediments are not a major factor in the concentrations and spatial variability of the metals. It was found that the metal concentrations in the great majority of samples were above regional geochemical background levels. The geochemical indices (Igeo, PLI, RI) indicate that the degree of toxic metal pollution in the sediments is slight in the central and southern parts of the lake and high in the northern part. The chemical analysis results showed that the samples in the central and southern parts of the lake differ little in their shares and concentrations of individual metals. This provides evidence that, as well as geogenic sources, their presence in sediments can be associated with non-point sources related to agricultural activities and with atmospheric sources (mainly the products of fossil fuel combustion). The higher concentrations of metals (especially Ni, Cd, Cr and Hg) in the northern part of the lake are influenced by the supply of industrial and communal pollutants from the lakeside town of Kruszwica. A factor limiting the migration of pollutants from the northern part of the lake towards the south is the lake’s morphology of the lake, which hinders water exchange between the northern part and the rest of the lake.

Individual and mixed metal maternal blood concentrations in relation to birth size: An analysis of the Japan Environment and Children’s Study (JECS)

Growth restriction in the prenatal period is a significant public health concern. Metals can negatively affect birth size, and pregnant women may be exposed to metal mixtures. Comprehensive studies analyzing the effects of combined metal exposure with accurate individual blood metal concentrations are limited. The current study investigated the associations between maternal metal exposure and birth size in a large, nationwide Japanese cohort using individual and mixed model approaches. Lead, cadmium, mercury, selenium, and manganese blood concentrations were measured in pregnant women in the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). Measurements of infant birth size-including body weight, body length, and head and chest circumference-were collected. Linear and logistic regressions were used for birth size measurements and the odds of an infant being small in size for gestational age, respectively. Associations between combined metal mixtures and measurements at birth were evaluated using quantile g-computation and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR). Of the 103,060 JECS pregnancies, 93,739 mother-infant pairs were analyzed. The linear regression models showed that lead, selenium, cadmium, and manganese-but not mercury-were associated with body weight. Cadmium was associated with length and chest circumference and mercury was associated with head circumference. Quantile g-computation revealed that manganese increased infant birth weight, length, head circumference, and chest circumference. Lead was the strongest negative factor for infant birth weight, length, head circumference, and chest circumference. The BKMR analysis revealed that the metals had an additive, rather than a synergistic effect. Metal exposure is associated with infant birth size, with lead and manganese playing a more significant role in Japan. The effects of prenatal combined metal exposure at low levels warrant public health attention.

Chemical Fractionation in Environmental Studies of Potentially Toxic Particulate-Bound Elements in Urban Air: A Critical Review.

In recent years, studies of heavy metal air pollution have increasingly gone beyond determining total concentrations of individual toxic metals. Chemical fractionation of potentially toxic elements in airborne particles is becoming an important part of these studies. This review covers the articles that have been published over the last three decades. Attention was paid to the issue of atmospheric aerosol sampling, sample pretreatment, sequential extraction schemes and conditions of individual extractions. Geochemical forms of metals occurring in the air in urban areas were considered in detail. Based on the data sets from chemical fractionation of particulate matter samples by three sequential extraction procedures (SEPs)—Fernández Espinosa, BCR and Chester’s—the compilation of the chemical distribution patterns of As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn was prepared. The human health risk posed by these toxic and/or carcinogenic elements via inhalation of atmospheric particles was estimated for two categories of polluted urban areas: the commonly encountered pollution level and the high pollution level.

The effect of aquatic and terrestrial prey availability on metal accumulation in pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) nestlings

Ingestion of contaminated prey is a major route for metal exposure in terrestrial insectivores. In terrestrial ecosystems adjacent to lakes and streams, emerging aquatic insects can transport metals, accumulated during their larval stage, from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems. However, contaminant exposure via aquatic insects has often been ignored in terrestrial environments, despite such insects representing a substantial part of the diet for terrestrial insectivores living close to lakes and streams. In this study, we investigated how dietary lead (Pb) and calcium (Ca) exposure from different aquatic and terrestrial prey types affects Pb accumulation in pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) nestlings living close to a former Pb/zinc (Zn) mine in northern Sweden, which closed in 2001. Stable isotope analysis (δ 13C and δ15N) of nestling blood and different prey types was used to estimate nestlings' diet. Ants, Lepidoptera larvae and Trichoptera were the most common prey types in the nestlings’ diet, in which aquatic prey types (Trichoptera included) accounted for 2.0–96.4%. Ingestion of specific prey groups, such as aquatic insects and ants, were important for Pb accumulation in nestlings, and when access to aquatic prey was low, ants were the predominant source of Pb. The influence of dietary Ca on Pb accumulation was less consistent, but Ca availability was relatively high and often co-occurred with high Pb concentrations in invertebrates. The study shows that both the proportion of different prey and their individual metal concentrations need to be considered when estimating exposure risks for insectivores. Further, it highlights the need to account for metal exposure from emerging aquatic insects for terrestrial insectivores living close to lakes and streams.

Oxidative potential and water-soluble heavy metals of size-segregated airborne particles in haze and non-haze episodes: Impact of the “Comprehensive Action Plan” in China

Air pollution is a major environmental health challenge in megacities, and as such a Comprehensive Action Plan (CAP) was issued in 2017 for Beijing, the capital city of China. Here we investigated the size-segregated airborne particles collected after the implementation of the CAP, intending to understand the change of oxidative potential and water-soluble heavy metal (WSHM) levels in ‘haze’ and ‘non-haze’ days. The DNA damage and the levels of WSHM were analyzed by Plasmid Scission Assay (PSA) and High-Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS) techniques. The PM mass concentration was higher in the fine particle size (0.43–2.1 μm) during haze days, except for the samples affected by mineral dust. The particle-induced DNA damage caused by fine sized particles (0.43–2.1 μm) exceeded that caused by the coarse sized particles (4.7–10 μm). The DNA damage from haze day particles significantly exceeded those collected on non-haze days. Prior to the instigation of the CAP, the highest value of DNA damage decreased, and DNA damage was seen in the finer size (0.43–1.1 μm). The Pearson correlation coefficient between the concentrations of water-soluble Pb, Cr, Cd and Zn were positively correlated with DNA damage, suggesting that these WSHM had significant oxidative potential. The mass concentrations of water-soluble trace elements (WSTE) and individual heavy metals were enriched in the finer particles between 0.43 μm to 1.1 μm, implying that smaller sized particles posed higher health risks. In contrast, the significant reduction in the mass concentration of water-soluble Cd and Zn, and the decrease of the maximum and average values of DNA damage after the CAP, demonstrated its effectiveness in restricting coal-burning emissions. These results have demonstrated that the Beijing CAP policy has been successful in reducing the toxicity of ‘respirable’ ambient particles.

Urinary metals and metal mixtures and timing of natural menopause in midlife women: The Study of Women's Health Across the Nation.

Exposure to metals and metal mixtures may influence ovarian aging. However, epidemiologic evidence of their potential impact is lacking. We prospectively examined the associations of 15 urinary metal concentrations and their mixtures with natural menopause in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation Multi-Pollutant Study. The study population consisted of 1082 premenopausal women from multiple racial/ethnic groups, aged 45-56years at baseline (1999-2000), with the median follow-up of 4.1years. Urinary concentrations of 15 metals, including arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, cesium, copper, mercury, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, lead, antimony, tin, thallium, and zinc, were measured at baseline. Natural menopause was defined as the final bleeding episode prior to at least 12months of amenorrhea, not due to surgery or hormone therapy. Cox proportional hazards models were used to examine associations between individual metal concentrations and timing of natural menopause. The associations between metal mixtures and natural menopause were evaluated using elastic net penalized Cox regression, and an environmental risk score (ERS) was computed to represent individual risks of natural menopause related to metal mixtures. The median age at natural menopause was 53.2years. Using the Cox proportional hazards models, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) (and its 95% confidence interval (CI)) for natural menopause was 1.32 (1.03, 1.67) for arsenic and 1.36 (1.05, 1.76) for lead, comparing the highest with the lowest quartiles of metal concentrations. The predicted ages at natural menopause in the highest and lowest quartiles were 52.7 and 53.5years for arsenic; and 52.9 and 53.8years for lead. A significant association between ERS and menopause was also observed. Women in the highest vs. the lowest quartiles of ERS had an HR of 1.71 (1.36, 2.15), equivalent to a 1.6year earlier median time to natural menopause. This study suggests that arsenic, lead, and metal mixtures are associated with earlier natural menopause, a risk factor for adverse health outcomes in later life.
