Assessing impact of elevated CO2 on heavy metal accumulation in crops: meta-analysis and implications for food security

Human activities led to elevation in carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in atmosphere. While such increase per se may be beneficial for the growth of some crops, it comes with a caveat of affecting crop nutritional status. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of changes in concentration of essential (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Mo, Ni) and non-essential (Ba, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, and Sr) heavy metals in response to elevated CO2, drawing on a meta-analysis of 1216 paired observations. The major findings are as follows: (1) Elevated CO2 leads to reduced concentrations of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in crops; (2) the extent of above reduction varies among plants species and is most pronounced in cereals and then in legumes and vegetables; (3) reduction in accumulation of non-essential (toxic) metals is less pronounced, potentially leading to an unfavorable essential/non-essential metal ratio in plants; (4) the above effects will come with significant implication to human health, exacerbating effects of the “hidden hunger” caused by the lack of Fe and Zn in the human diets. The paper also analyses the mechanistic basis of nutrient acquisition (both at physiological and molecular levels) and calls for the changes in the governmental policies to increase efforts of plant breeders to create genotypes with improved nutrient use efficiency for essential micronutrients while uncoupling their transport from non-essential (toxic) heavy metals.

First trimester prenatal metal mixtures, vitamins, and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy in the project viva cohort

BackgroundHypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) such as preeclampsia and gestational hypertension are major contributors to maternal and child morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have reported associations with selected metals and vitamins but are limited in sample size and non-prospective study designs. We evaluated prospective associations of metal mixtures with HDP and tested interactions by vitamins. Study DesignWe measured first trimester (median = 10.1 weeks) concentrations of essential (copper, magnesium, manganese, selenium, zinc) and nonessential (arsenic, barium, cadmium, cesium, mercury, lead) metals in red blood cells (n = 1,386) and vitamins (B12 and folate) in plasma (n = 924) in Project Viva, a pre-birth US cohort. We collected diagnosis of HDP by reviewing medical records. We used multinomial logistic regression and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression to estimate individual and joint associations of metals with HDP and interactions by vitamins, after adjusting for key covariates. ResultsThe majority of participants were non-Hispanic white (72.5 %), never smokers (68.5 %) with a mean (SD) age of 32.3 (4.6) years. Fifty-two (3.8 %) developed preeclampsia and 94 (6.8 %) gestational hypertension. A doubling in first trimester erythrocyte copper was associated with 78 % lower odds of preeclampsia (OR=0.22, 95 % confidence interval: 0.08, 0.60). We also observed significant associations between higher erythrocyte total arsenic and lower odds of preeclampsia (OR=0.80, 95 % CI: 0.66, 0.97) and higher vitamin B12 and increased odds of gestational hypertension (OR=1.79, 95 % CI: 1.09, 2.96), but associations were attenuated after adjustment for dietary factors. Lower levels of the overall metal mixture and essential metal mixture were associated with higher odds of preeclampsia. We found no evidence of interactions by prenatal vitamins or between metals. ConclusionLower levels of a first-trimester essential metal mixture were associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia, primarily driven by copper. No associations were observed between other metals and HDP after adjustment for confounders and diet.

The Impact of the Combined Effect of Inhalation Anesthetics and Iron Dextran on Rats' Systemic Toxicity.

Disruption of any stage of iron homeostasis, including uptake, utilization, efflux, and storage, can cause progressive damage to peripheral organs. The health hazards associated with occupational exposure to inhalation anesthetics (IA) in combination with chronic iron overload are not well documented. This study aimed to investigate changes in the concentration of essential metals in the peripheral organs of rats after iron overload in combination with IA. The aim was also to determine how iron overload in combination with IA affects tissue metal homeostasis, hepcidin-ferritin levels, and MMP levels according to physiological, functional, and tissue features. According to the obtained results, iron accumulation was most pronounced in the liver (19×), spleen (6.7×), lungs (3.1×), and kidneys (2.5×) compared to control. Iron accumulation is associated with elevated heavy metal levels and impaired essential metal concentrations due to oxidative stress (OS). Notably, the use of IA increases the iron overload toxicity, especially after Isoflurane exposure. The results show that the regulation of iron homeostasis is based on the interaction of hepcidin, ferritin, and other proteins regulated by inflammation, OS, free iron levels, erythropoiesis, and hypoxia. Long-term exposure to IA and iron leads to the development of numerous adaptation mechanisms in response to toxicity, OS, and inflammation. These adaptive mechanisms of iron regulation lead to the inhibition of MMP activity and reduction of oxidative stress, protecting the organism from possible damage.

Association between essential metals, adherence to healthy lifestyle behavior, and ankle-brachial index

BackgroundAnkle-brachial index (ABI) is a noninvasive diagnostic method for peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and a predictor of cardiovascular events. ObjectiveThe present study aimed to evaluate the association between individual or combined essential metals and ABI, as well as assess the collective impact of essential metals when coupled with healthy lifestyle on ABI. MethodsA total of 2865 participants were recruited in Wuhan Tongji Hospital between August 2018 and March 2019. Concentrations of essential metals in urine were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. ResultsThe results of general linear regression models demonstrated that after adjusting for confounding factors, there was a positive association between ABI increase and per unit increase of log 10-transformed, creatinine-corrected urinary Cr (β (95 % CI): 0.010 (0.004, 0.016), PFDR = 0.007), Fe (β (95 % CI): 0.010 (0.003, 0.017), PFDR = 0.018), and Co (β (95 % CI): 0.013 (0.005, 0.021), PFDR = 0.007). The WQS regression revealed a positive relationship between the mixture of essential metals and ABI (β (95 % CI): 0.006 (0.003, 0.010), P < 0.001), with Cr and Co contributing most to the relationship (weighted 45.48 % and 40.14 %, respectively). Compared to individuals with unfavorable lifestyle and the lowest quartile of Cr, Fe and Co, those with favorable lifestyle and the highest quartile of Cr, Fe and Co exhibited the most increase in ABI (β (95 % CI): 0.030 (0.017, 0.044) for Cr, β (95 % CI): 0.027 (0.013, 0.040) for Fe, and β (95 % CI): 0.030 (0.016, 0.044) for Co). ConclusionIn summary, our study indicates that adequate essential metal intake together with healthy lifestyle behaviors perform crucial roles in PAD protection.

Heavy metals bioaccumulation in free-ranging South American rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus) in Southeastern Brazil.

Anthropogenic activities are the main sources of soil, air, and water pollution by metals, including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), the metalloid arsenic (As), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu). The goal of this study was to assess the presence and concentration of toxic (As, Cd, Pb, and Cr) and essential metals (Mg, Zn, and Cu) in the liver and kidneys from 96 free-ranging rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus) from Minas Gerais (Brazil). Bioaccumulation of Cd and Pb were significantly higher in males and heavier rattlesnakes (those with body weight above the average of the study population). Average ± standard deviations of Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, Mg, Zn, and As in the general population (n = 96) were 3.19 ± 2.52; 5.98 ± 8.49; 0.66 ± 1.97; 3.27 ± 2.85; 776.14 ± 2982.92; 27.44 ± 29.55; and 0.32 ± 1.46; respectively. Bioaccumulation of some metals correlated positively with changes in hematologic and serum biochemical parameters. Results of this study were contrasted with previous studies assessing metal bioaccumulation in other species of terrestrial or aquatic snakes. Considering their position in the food chain and the broad range of bioaccumulation of both toxic and essential metals observed in this study, rattlesnakes may function as highly relevant biological sentinels for environmental pollution.

Different extractable pools of Cd and Pb in agricultural soil under amendments: Water-soluble concentration sensitively indicates metal availability

Identification of the most appropriate chemically extractable pool for evaluating Cd and Pb availability remains elusive, hindering accurate assessment on environmental risks and effectiveness of remediation strategies. This study evaluated the feasibility of European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction, Ca(NO3)2 extraction, and water extraction on assessing Cd and Pb availability in agricultural soil amended with slaked lime, magnesium hydroxide, corn stover biochar, and calcium dihydrogen phosphate. Moreover, the enriched isotope tracing technique (112Cd and 206Pb) was employed to evaluate the aging process of newly introduced Cd and Pb within 56 days’ incubation. Results demonstrated that extractable pools by BCR and Ca(NO3)2 extraction were little impacted by amendments and showed little correlation with soil pH. This is notable because soil pH is closely linked to metal availability, indicating these extraction methods may not adequately reflect metal availability. Conversely, water-soluble concentrations of Cd and Pb were markedly influenced by amendments and exhibited strong correlations with pH (Pearson's r: -0.908 to -0.825, P < 0.001), suggesting water extraction as a more sensitive approach. Furthermore, newly introduced metals underwent a more evident aging process as demonstrated by acid-soluble and water-soluble pools. Additionally, water-soluble concentrations of essential metals were impacted by soil amendments, raising caution on their potential effects on plant growth. These findings suggest water extraction as a promising and attractive method to evaluate Cd and Pb availability, which will help provide assessment guidance for environmental risks caused by heavy metals and develop efficient remediation strategies.

Función de los hongos micorrícicos y las bacterias solubilizadoras de fosfatos en la absorción de elementos esenciales y metálicos en las plantas en suelos contaminado con metales pesados

The objective of this study was to compare the effect of different types of inoculants (control, vesicular arbuscular mycorrhizae fungi [VAMF], phosphate-solubilizing bacteria [PSB], and co-inoculant [VAMF-PSB]) on root colonization, plant growth, macronutrient (P and N) uptake, and metal element uptake under heavy metal-contaminated soil conditions. Three species of vegetable plants, namely tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L. cv. Ratna), red chili (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Gada), and hot chili (Capsicum frutescens L. cv. Pusaka Brengolo), were grown in heavy metal (Zn, Ca, Ni and Cd) –contaminated soil for eight weeks. Plants co-inoculated with VAMF-PSB showed significantly higher root colonization by VAMF as well as P and N concentrations in shoot and root than plants inoculated with only VAMF or PSB; consequently, the plant biomass also increased. In heavy metal-contaminated soil, VAMF colonization and PSB application could significantly improve the essential metal concentration (Cu and Zn) in the shoot, although there were no significant effects on the roots. On the contrary, co-inoculation with VAMF-PSB could significantly decrease Cd and Ni concentrations in the shoot, although Cd and Ni concentrations did not show a significant difference in the root. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Ni were higher in the roots than in the shoots of the three plant species tested. The type of inoculant used in this study selectively discriminated between plant essential (Cu, Zn) and non-essential elements (Cd, Ni).

Essential and non-essential metals in coconut milk: Determination, chemometric analysis, and risk assessment study

Due to the widespread metal contamination in plant-based foods, food safety is a major global public concern. The growing demand for plant-based beverages in the market has emphasized the need to conduct research on the metal composition of these products. This study aimed to examine the concentrations of essential and non-essential metals in coconut milk collected from a commercial market located in Lahore-Punjab, Pakistan. Twenty samples (10 commercial milk and 10 extracted milk) were analysed using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) after ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). In addition, the current study investigates the distribution, correlation, and chemometric assessment of 13 metals (Mg, Ca, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Al, Cr, Ni, Cd, Pb and Ba). The concentration ranges of essential metals vary over a wide range for Mg (43.8–687.5 mg/L), Ca (127.7–606.5 mg/L), Mn (0.64–22.3 mg/L), Fe (12.4–91.6 mg/L), Co (1.2–5.5 mg/L), Cu (1.9–10.8 mg/L), and Zn (1.3–9.9 mg/L). While, the concentration ranges of non-essential metals vary over a range for Al (0.016–0.093 mg/L), Cr (0.19–0.91 mg/L), Ni (0.11–0.99 mg/L), Cd (0.01–0.02 mg/L), Pb (0.01–0.02 mg/L), and Ba (0.13–0.93 mg/L). Tolerable dietary intake (TDI) values for Cr, Ni and provisional tolerable monthly intake (PTMI) value for Cd were higher than the value established by World Health Organization (WHO) and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The higher values of TDI and PTMI indicate that these metals might be harmful to human health through the consumption of coconut milk. The computed values of the target hazard quotient (THQ < 1), the hazard index (HI < 1), and the cumulative cancer risk (CCR) ranged from 8.2 × 10−5 to 1.0 × 10−4 which indicated low risk of exposure to metals through consumption of coconut milk. From a dietary and food safety perspective, the study is important for users of plant-based beverages.

Trace element levels and autism spectrum disorder in a sample of Algerian children: A case-control study investigation

The prevalence of autism has been increasing in recent years due to better screening. diagnosis. and awareness campaigns. Toxic metals are considered to be one of the environmental factors that may contribute to autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This study aimed to investigate the levels of toxic and essential trace elements in autistic children and their connection to autism. The study included 40 autistic children and 41 controls. both aged 4–9 years. The levels of toxic metals and metalloids (Arsenic. Cadmium. Chromium. Mercury. Lead) and trace elements (Copper. Iron. Selenium. Zinc) were measured in whole blood. plasma. and urine using ICP-MS multi-elemental techniques. The results showed that the concentrations of toxic and essential metals were significantly higher in autistic children compared to controls. This was demonstrated by higher levels of Cadmium. Chromium. Copper. Zinc. and Lead in blood. plasma. and urine. while plasma Iron levels were lower in autistic children. The results suggest a possible association between autism and metal exposure. but causality cannot be established.

Evaluation of Essential Metal Concentration and Possible Potential Health Risk in Chicken Giblets Commonly Sold to Consumers in Lokoja Main Market, Kogi State, Nigeria

The objective of this work was to evaluate the concentrations of essential metals (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Se, B, P, and Zn) and potential health risks in chicken giblets commonly sold to consumers in Lokoja's main market, Kogi State, Nigeria. Using appropriate standard methods, samples were digested with 65% HNO3, and the digest was analyzed using an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrometer. The mean concentrations (mg/kg) in gizzard ranged from 0.06±0.08 (Cu) to 28.1±6.9 (P), kidney 0.04±0.01 (Cu) to 24±10 (P), and liver 0.09±0.10 (Cu) to 47±11(P). All the essential metals examined were below the FAO and WHO's permissible standards. The observed trend in the accumulation of metal concentration in chicken giblets was P &gt; Na &gt; Ca &gt; Fe &gt; Mg &gt; Zn &gt; B &gt; Se &gt; K, Cu. The health risk analyses revealed that the current exposure levels will not have a major negative impact on human health, as the hazard quotient for each metal was less than one (&lt;1) and the overall hazard index was also less than 1. Although the population will not be exposed to the potential health risks from these metals presently, there is a need to regularly assess the levels of heavy metals in chicken giblets to maintain protection against negative health effects.

Evaluation of Carcinogenic and Non-Carcinogenic Risks of Heavy Metals in Selected Medicinal Plants

ABSTRACT The concentrations of essential and non-essential metals were determined in four medicinal plants (Acacia abyssinica, Carissa spinarum, Dodonaea angustifolia and Euclea acemose) grown in Tara Gedam forest. The concentrations (in mg kg−1) of metals in D. angustifolia were 11.7 for Cu, 106 for Fe, 29.2 for Mn, 23.8 for Zn, 4.01 for Ni, 0.171 for Cd, and 3.11 for Pb; C. spinarum were 8.87 for Cu, 107 for Fe, 41.1 for Mn, 12.3 for Zn, 8.02 for Ni, 0.202 for Cd, and 8.53 for Pb; E. racemosa were 24.6 for Cu, 55.9 for Fe, 64.9 for Mn, 11.5 for Zn, 3.84 for Ni, 0.292 for Cd, and 0.771 for Pb; and A. abyssinica were 25.3 for Cu, 58.1 for Fe, 28.3 for Mn, 17.6 for Zn, 4.42 for Ni, 0.402 for Cd, and 4.04 for Pb. The percentage recoveries were ranged from 81.1% to 102.6%. The values of hazard index (HI) were greater than unity, thus there was non-carcinogenic adverse health risk for users. Since the carcinogenic risk (CR) due to Cd and Pb intake was lower than the recommended values (10−6), the use of these plants do not pose carcinogenic health risks.

To Eat or Not to Eat?-Food Safety Aspects of Essential Metals in Seafood.

The popularity of seafoods is high due to their superb dietary properties and healthy composition. However, it is crucial to understand whether they adequately contribute to our essential nutritional needs. Small amounts of essential metals are indispensable in the human body to proper physiological functioning; their deficiency can manifest in various sets of symptoms that can only be eliminated with their intake during treatment or nutrition. However, the excessive consumption of metals can induce undesirable effects, or even toxicosis. Shellfish, oyster, and squid samples were collected directly from a fish market. After sample preparation, the concentration of essential metals (cobalt, chromium, copper, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc) was detected by Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry. The results were analyzed statistically using ANOVA and two-sample t-tests. The average concentration of the investigated essential elements and the calculated burden based on the consumption were below the Recommended Dietary Allowances and Tolerable Upper Intake Levels. Based on these results, the trace element contents of the investigated seafoods do not cover the necessary recommended daily intake of them, but their consumption poses no health hazard due to their low levels.

Association of prenatal essential metal exposure with newborn mitochondrial DNA copy number: Results from a birth cohort study

Imbalance or deficiencies of essential metals can lead to oxidative stress, that can damage mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) molecule. Knowledge on effects of exposure to essential metals and their mixture remains limited. We aimed to evaluate individual and joint associations of prenatal essential metals with neonatal mtDNA copy number. We recruited 746 mother-newborn pairs from a birth cohort study conducted in Wuhan City, China, and collected trimester-specific urine and cord blood samples. We measured the concentrations of seven urinary essential metals, include zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), cobalt (Co), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), and chromium (Cr), using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and measured cord blood mtDNA copy number using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. We estimated the trimester-specific associations of individual essential metal concentrations with mtDNA copy number using a multiple informant model, and assessed their joint association using weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression. For individual essential metal, a doubling of maternal urinary Zn concentrations during the second trimester was associated with a 7.47% (95% CI: 1.17–14.17%) higher level of neonatal mtDNA copy number. For the essential metal mixture, one-unit increased in the WQS index of the essential metals mixture during the second trimester resulted in a 10.41% (95% CI: 3.04–18.30%) increase in neonatal mtDNA copy number. Our findings suggest that exposure to both Zn and essential metal mixture during the second trimester is associated with a higher neonatal mtDNA copy number. Further research should assess whether mtDNA copy number is associated with child health.

A metallothionein gene from hard clam Meretrix meretrix: Sequence features, expression patterns, and metal tolerance activities

Metallothioneins (MTs) are low-molecular weight cytoplasmic heavy metal binding proteins. MTs can regulate the concentration of essential or non-essential metals in organisms, and have many important biological functions, including detoxification, trace element metabolism, and anti-oxidation. In the present study, we cloned and characterized a metallothionein gene (designated as MmMT) from the hard clam Meretrix meretrix. The complete cDNA sequence of MmMT contained an open reading frame (ORF) of 629 bp, which encoded a protein of 76 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 7.66 kDa and a calculated theoretical isoelectric point of 7.24. MmMT is highly similar to previously identified MTs from other species, with typical metallothionein features such as a high cysteine residue content and the absence of histidine and aromatic residues. The mRNA transcripts of MmMT were prevalent in all the tested tissues, and the expression levels of MmMT were highest in the hepatopancreas and hemocytes. During the stimulation of Vibrio splendidus, the mRNA transcripts of MmMT in the hepatopancreas and hemocytes were significantly increased. The Escherichia coli overexpressing MmMT performed strong growth in the media supplemented with CdCl2 and CuSO4 compared to the control strains. These results provide useful information for further investigation of the functions of MmMT in metal detoxification and the innate immune system.

Heavy metals in drinking water and periodontitis: evidence from the national oral health survey from China

BackgroundPeriodontitis has become an increasingly important public health issue, coupled with a high economic burden for prevention and treatment. Exposure to essential trace heavy metals has been associated with various diseases; however, the relationships between essential trace heavy metals and periodontitis remain inconclusive.ObjectivesTo investigate the association between essential trace heavy metals in tap water and periodontitis in a nationally representative sample in China.MethodsWe conducted a nationwide study including 1348 participants from the Fourth National Oral Health Survey in the 2015–2016 period. The trace heavy metals concentration was measured in the local pipeline terminal tap water. Periodontitis was diagnosed according to the classification scheme proposed at the 2018 world workshop on the classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions. We used weighted multivariable logistic regression to estimate the association between essential trace heavy metals and the risk of periodontitis. We additionally used spline analysis to explore the possible nonlinear dose-response associations.ResultsPeriodontitis patients were exposed to higher concentrations of essential trace heavy metals. In adjusted models, for 1 SD increase in the concentration of iron, manganese, and copper in tap water, the risk of periodontitis increased by 30% (OR: 1.30, 95%CI: 1.12–1.50), 20% (OR: 1.20, 95%CI: 1.03–1.41), and 20% (OR: 1.20, 95%CI: 1.04–1.39), respectively. Stratified analyses demonstrated that the associations between essential trace heavy metals and periodontitis were higher in females, elders, and rural residents. Spline analysis revealed nonlinear exposure-response relationships between periodontitis and exposure to iron, manganese, and copper in tap water.ConclusionsExposures to essential trace heavy metals in drinking water were associated with greater odds of periodontitis. Given the growing burden of periodontitis, our study sheds light on tailored public health policies for improving drinking water standards to alleviate periodontitis impairment.

Mixtures of Metals and Micronutrients in Early Pregnancy and Cognition in Early and Mid-Childhood: Findings from the Project Viva Cohort.

The developing fetal brain is sensitive to many environmental exposures. However, the independent and joint effects of prenatal exposure to metals and micronutrients on child cognition are not well understood. Our aim was to evaluate associations of first-trimester ( wk) maternal erythrocyte concentrations of mixtures of nonessential and essential metals and micronutrients with early ( y) and mid-childhood ( y) cognitive test scores in Project Viva, a prebirth cohort in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. We measured concentrations of five essential metals (Cu, Mg, Mn, Se, Zn) and two micronutrients (vitamin B12 and folate), together termed the "nutrient mixture," as well as six nonessential metals (As, Ba, Cd, Cs, Hg, Pb), together termed the "neurotoxic mixture," in first-trimester ( wk) maternal erythrocytes (metals) or plasma (micronutrients). We assessed visual-motor function and receptive vocabulary in early childhood ( y), and visual-motor function, visual memory, and fluid and crystallized intelligence in mid-childhood ( y). We employed adjusted quantile g-computation and linear regression to estimate mixture and individual component associations, respectively. Analyses included 900 mother-child pairs (74% college graduates; 52% male children). In mixture analyses, a quartile increase in the nutrient mixture was associated with a mean difference in early childhood receptive vocabulary score of 1.58 points [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.06, 3.10], driven by Zn and Se. A quartile increase in the neurotoxic mixture was associated with a mean difference in mid-childhood visual-motor score of points (95% CI: , ), driven by Ba and Cs. Linear regressions supported quantile g-computation findings for mixture component contributions. Maternal circulating concentrations of several essential (Zn and Se) and nonessential (Ba and Cs) metals were associated with some domains of child cognition. In this folate-replete cohort, first-trimester circulating concentrations of known neurotoxic metals, such as Pb, were not associated with child cognition. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP12016.

Multimodal Imaging of Metals in a Retinal Degeneration Model to Inform on Ocular Disease

The metallome has been involved in the pathological investigation into ocular tissue for decades; however, as technologies advance, more information can be ascertained from individual tissue sections that were not previously possible. Herein, a demonstration of complementary techniques has been utilized to describe the distribution and concentrations of essential metals in both wildtype (WT) and rhodopsin (Rho−/−) ocular tissues. The multimodal approach described is an example of complementary datasets that can be produced when employing a multifaceted analytical approach. Heterogenous distributions of copper and zinc were observable within both WT and Rho−/− tissue by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and the distributions of further trace elements notoriously problematic for ICP-MS analysis (phosphorous, Sulfur, chlorine, potassium, calcium, iron, and aluminum) were analysed by particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE).

Accumulation of heavy metals in meat and their relationship with water and food intake of aquatic animals in Kermanshah, western Iran

ABSTRACT Accumulation of heavy metals in aquatic meat can have a destructive role in food safety and is also closely related to the water and feed consumed by animals. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the heavy metals in three aquatic species and their relationship with water and food. Fresh samples included 65 trout, 40 carp, and 45 shrimp, and their water and food were collected from Kermanshah aquaculture. After the preparation phase, the concentration of heavy metals was determined by using inductively-coupled plasma-mass-spectrometry. Lead in carp, arsenic in shrimp, cadmium, and mercury in trout had the highest concentrations of toxic metals. The lead, arsenic, and mercury concentrations in all three farmed aquatic species were higher than the maximum permissible limits. A significant correlation coefficient was observed between the concentration of these metals in the meat and their consumed water and food (p≤0.001). Of the essential metals, except for selenium in trout, and zinc in all three aquatic species, the concentration of other metals was higher than that of the permissible consumption limit. There was also a significant correlation between the concentration of essential metals and their consumed feed (p<0.001). The target hazard quotient of toxic metals was less than 1, but the target cancer risk for arsenic and mercury was in the range of carcinogenicity. Thereby, it is vital to monitor the quality of aquatic meat and pay special attention to their water and feed sources in this region of Iran, which will consequently guarantee human health.

Homeostasis of metals plays an important role in functioning of the body. Not only the concentrations of toxic and essential metals in bodily fluids, but also their ability of interaction with proteins and enzymes defining the enzyme activity, are important. The study was aimed to compare the possibilities of binding interactions between various metal ions and human serum proteins. Chemical reactions between the immobilized metal ions (Cu2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Ca2+, Fe3+, Mg2+, Hg+, Cd2+, Pb2+, Cr3+, Co2+, Ag+, Bi2+, Ba2+, Sr2+) and the serum proteins or highly purified blood metalloprotein (alpha-2-macroglobulin, α2M) were assessed by the crossed immunoelectrophoresis with in situ adsorption in the second dimension. It has been shown that Hg+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ ions more actively interact with metalloproteins (particularly, with α2M) and many other human blood proteins in in vitro reactions than other ions. We have demonstrated that α2M interacts not only with Zn2+ and Cd2+ ions, as earlier reported, but also with Ca2+, Mg2+, Fe3+, Mn2+, Pb2+, Sr2, Ag+. Interaction of a number of metal ions, including highly toxic ones, with blood proteins that are not metalloproteins has been revealed. The findings confirm the fundamental possibility of the metal ion imbalance active involvement in metabolic disorders via effects on the body's regulatory and transport proteins, which requires further investigation

Investigation of the levels of essential and non-essential metals in women with and without abortion history: A study based on the Persian population of the Shahrekord cohort

Spontaneous abortion is a serious threat to the mothers' physical and mental well-being. The cause of spontaneous abortion is multifactorial disease. Prenatal non-essential metal exposure, particularly heavy metals, has been suggested to be associated with adverse pregnancy and birth outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the concentration of essential and non-essential metals including Pb, As, Zn, and Se and the risk of spontaneous abortion. In this case-control study the levels of Pb, As, Zn, and Se in the whole blood of 60 women with spontaneous abortion (case group) and also 60 women without spontaneous abortion (control group) were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Results revealed statistically significant reductions (P < 0.001) in whole blood levels of Zn and Se as well as the levels of As and Pb had a substantial elevation (P < 0.001) in cases compared to controls. According to the findings, repeated spontaneous abortion may be influenced by increasing whole blood levels of heavy metals such as As (OR = 17.53, P = 0.001) and Pb (OR = 15.58, P = 0.001) as well as decreasing levels of vital micronutrients Zn (OR = 0.20, P = 0.001) and Se (OR = 0.14, P = 0.001). The results of this study support the idea that limiting intake of non-essential metals during pregnancy can decrease the risk of spontaneous abortion. Overall, the information presented is expected to help plan future fundamental and applied investigations on the spontaneous abortion.
