When technology speaks language: an evaluation of course management systems used in a language learning context

AbstractIn light of the growing popularity of the use of computer management systems (CMSs) in higher education today, this study critically evaluates CMS adoption through a content-specific lens. By employing a mixed-method approach, the study examines college teachers’ and students’ experiences and perceptions of CMS adoption for language learning and teaching purposes. The findings show that despite the users’ perceived advantages of using CMSs in language courses, the systems’ lack of content-area specificity undermines many of the potential benefits. The study calls for better-rounded professional training to assist language teachers in integrating CMS functions strategically into their disciplinary pedagogy and incorporating multimedia language resources selectively to maximize the benefit of CMSs. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate the importance of developing content-specific CMSs with functions tailored toward pedagogical needs in different contexts.

Role-Based Autonomic Systems

Autonomic Computing is an emerging computing paradigm used to create computer systems capable of self-management in order to overcome the rapidly growing complexity of computing systems management. To possess self-* properties, there must be mechanisms to support self-awareness, that is an autonomic system should be able to perceive the abnormality of its components. After abnormality is checked, processes of self-healing, self-configuration, self-optimization, and self-protection must be completed to guarantee the system works correctly and continuously. In role-based collaboration (RBC), roles are the major media for interaction, coordination, and collaboration. A role can be used to check if a player behaves well or not. This paper investigates the possibility of using roles and their related mechanisms to diagnose the behavior of agents, and facilitate self-* properties of a system.

An Integrated Data-Driven Framework for Computing System Management

With advancement in science and technology, computing systems are becoming increasingly more complex with a growing number of heterogeneous software and hardware components. They are thus becoming more difficult to monitor, manage, and maintain. Traditional approaches to system management have been largely based on domain experts through a knowledge acquisition solution that translates domain knowledge into operating rules and policies. This process has been well known as cumbersome, labor intensive, and error prone. In addition, traditional approaches for system management are difficult to keep up with the rapidly changing environments. There is a pressing need for automatic and efficient approaches to monitor and manage complex computing systems. In this paper, we propose an integrated data-driven framework for computing system management by acquiring the needed knowledge automatically from a large amount of historical log data. Specifically, we apply text mining techniques to automatically categorize the log messages into a set of canonical categories, incorporate temporal information to improve categorization performance, develop temporal mining techniques to discover the relationships between different events, and take a novel approach called event summarization to provide a concise interpretation of the temporal patterns.

Return performance volatility and adaptation in an automated technical analysis approach to portfolio management

AbstractThis paper discusses the design of a quantitative computational intelligence portfolio management system and evaluates the advantages of some adaptive mechanisms to enable the system to adjust its management approach as market conditions change. A detailed analysis of the performance of the system outside is also provided. It is found that an adaptive methodology where trading rules are able to adjust to market conditions performs better, having greater excess returns and lower volatility than a fixed rule approach. We consider several performance metrics, including portfolio alpha and information content. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Junior doctor strike model of care: Reduced access block and predominant Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine staffing improve emergency department performance

To describe the response and analyse ED performance during a 5-day junior doctor strike. Data were collected via the patient information management computer system. Key performance indicators included percentage seen within maximum waiting times per triage category (TC), ED length of stay, emergency medicine patients who did not wait to be seen, hospital bed occupancy and access block percentage. Comparisons were made for the same 5 days before the strike (BS), during the strike (S) and after the strike. Total doctor's shifts BS were 78.66 with 25% of these shifts being Fellow of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM) shifts. FACEM shifts were more common during the S period at 75% (P < 0.001). Total attendances (BS 631 vs S 596, P = 0.22) and TC percentages (P-values for TC 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, respectively, 1.0, 0.55, 0.88, 0.97, 0.46) in the BS, S and after-the-strike periods were not significantly different. Despite fewer total doctor shifts, the FACEM predominant model of care during the strike resulted in better percentages seen within the maximum waiting times for TC3 (66%), TC4 (78%) and TC5 (86%) (all P < 0.001). There was a reduction in patients who did not wait to be seen (28 BS vs 5 S, P < 0.001), ED length of stay (admissions: BS 451 min vs S 258 min, P < 0.001; discharges: BS 233 min vs S 144 min, P < 0.02) and referrals to inpatient services (P = 0.02). This occurred with reduced bed point occupancy of 66% and a consequent reduction in access block. FACEM staffing and reduced access block were significant factors in improved ED performance.

A mainframe interfacing computer management system for the control of oral anticoagulant therapy.

A unique computerized management system has been used to control the anticoagulation of over 400 patients at a large teaching hospital for the last eighteen months. The system is located on the main pathology computer which can be interfaced with the patient administration system (PAS). This enables files in the anticoagulant program to be linked with files in the PAS and files in the haematology database. This system has many advantages over a stand-alone microcomputer system and will form the basis for the next generation of computerized anticoagulant management systems.

Models and Metrics to Enable Energy-Efficiency Optimizations

Power consumption and energy efficiency are important factors in the initial design and day-to-day management of computer systems. Researchers and system designers need benchmarks that characterize energy efficiency to evaluate systems and identify promising new technologies. To predict the effects of new designs and configurations, they also need accurate methods of modeling power consumption.

Course Management Systems

Development and sale of computer-assisted instructional supplements and course management system products are increasing. Textbook sales representatives use this technology to market textbooks, and many colleges and universities encourage the use of such technology. The use of course management systems in education has been equated to the use of enterprise resource planning software by large businesses. Research findings about the pedagogical benefits of computer-assisted instruction and computer management systems are inconclusive. This study describes an experiment conducted to determine the benefit to students of using course manage-ment systems. The effects of cognition, learning styles, and computer attitude were considered and eliminated to better isolate any differences in performance. Student performance did not improve with the use of the technology.

Computer management systems and protocols in intensive care units: do we have any benefit?

Computer management systems and treatment protocols (CMS/P) have been recommended for their potential to improve patient safety and outcome. Computer management systems require substantial investments in the ICUs. In return, a high-quality, standardised ICU treatment with software-implemented protocols as well as decreased hand-written documentation has been aimed at. The objective of this study was to systematically review the literature on CMS/P to evaluate their impact on outcome benefit.

Requirements change: Fears dictate the must haves; desires the won’t haves

We attempt to contribute to a general theory of requirements change from a goal-oriented and viewpoints-driven angle. To practitioners, this knowledge is relevant to anticipate changes in certain types of requirements, which may shorten the project’s timeline, reduce costs, and increase product quality. Initially, we followed the common assumptions that what should be on a system is demanded by goals to achieve and what should not be on a system is demanded by goal states to avoid. However, requirements engineering of a diversity of systems (capacity and warehouse management, COTS PCs, and a Braille mouse) revealed that must requirements are predicted by goals to avoid (!) and won’t requirements by goals to approach (!). Expectations about the positive or negative impact (valence) of requirements on goals played a moderating role. We unfold the gradual discovery of this “goals-to-requirements chiasm” (CHI-effect or χ-effect), claiming that variability in agreement to positive or negative requirements is predicted by goals of opposite polarity. We found that whether the χ-effect occurred or not, depended on the alignment of stakeholder viewpoints on goals and requirements. Comments from practitioners are included. Organizational interventions to implement improvements in patient care: a structured review of reviews.

BackgroundChanging the organization of patient care should contribute to improved patient outcomes as functioning of clinical teams and organizational structures are important enablers for improvement.ObjectiveTo provide an overview of the research evidence on effects of organizational strategies to implement improvements in patient care.DesignStructured review of published reviews of rigorous evaluations.Data sourcesPublished reviews of studies on organizational interventions.Review methodsSearches were conducted in two data-bases (Pubmed, Cochrane Library) and in selected journals. Reviews were included, if these were based on a systematic search, focused on rigorous evaluations of organizational changes, and were published between 1995 and 2003.Two investigators independently extracted information from the reviews regarding their clinical focus, methodological quality and main quantitative findings.ResultsA total of 36 reviews were included, but not all were high-quality reviews. The reviews were too heterogeneous for quantitative synthesis. None of the strategies produced consistent effects. Professional performance was generally improved by revision of professional roles and computer systems for knowledge management. Patient outcomes was generally improved by multidisciplinary teams, integrated care services, and computer systems. Cost savings were reported from integrated care services. The benefits of quality management remained uncertain.ConclusionThere is a growing evidence base of rigorous evaluations of organizational strategies, but the evidence underlying some strategies is limited and for no strategy can the effects be predicted with high certainty.

Pitfalls and Potentials of Knowledge Management

Organizations are interested in actively using knowledge / past experiences to improve their business processes. In this paper, we address some of the major issues in obtaining this goal. We discuss the importance of codifying and representing knowledge in computerized information systems, the distribution of knowledge to knowledge workers, and the interaction between knowledge workers via computer systems for knowledge management. We signal the pitfalls and potentials involved in these issues for knowledge management.

ICT and Distance Education : Critiquing Modes And ‘Limitations’

Technology enables people to enhance the quality of lives, it undeniably improves the standards of living, and it calls for better, speedier and effective communication. Technology can be used for educational purposes, and educational technology calls for an extension of the stereotypical classroom situation, leading to peer group interaction and emphasises on interactivity between teacher and taught; rather than on one way pedagogy and the teacher centred lay out of education. A Master's Programme Initiative in Educational Transformation in New Zealand integrated a computer management system, WebCT into a learner centred interactive community of K‐12 practicing teachers. The learner centred community model was advocated by Weimer, (2002). The initiative was to further dialogue among teachers for better training and upgradation of professional skills. This was a means to reflective practice so that teachers retrospect and introspect on their pedagogical skills. Training, education and the workplace have become significant matrixes of the educational ‘scenario’ in today's corporate world where learners are stakeholders. On line learning provides for teaching/learning which is dialogic. It creates an ambience for effecting space for dialogue and the enhancement of a dynamic learning community. Dabbagh and Bannan Ritland (2005) posit that learning is internet and Web based enabled. Web based technologies thus further the cause of interactive learning in a manner of ‘knowledge construction’. Dialogue is a ‘change agent’ changing us and the context (Wink 2000). For Dewey(1916) knowledge construction is a social process.

Virtual reality or real virtuality: the space of flows and nursing practice

The use of virtual environments for the provision of health-care is on the increase, and with each new development brings debates about their impact on care, nursing and nursing practice. Such environments offer opportunities for extending care and improvements in communication. Others believe these developments threaten aspects of nursing they hold sacrosanct. This paper explores the development of an assemblage of computer networks, databases, information systems, software programs and management systems that together work to manage health-care in Australia, namely casemix. We contend that spatial theories on network society show how this assemblage co-ordinates and operates to manage care. We discuss how this assemblage affects care and suggest that changes in organisation may be a part of the shift in how bodily organisation occurs more generally, but more specifically in health-care. We also suggest how nurses are enrolled in and by such networks, leading to transformation in nurses' practices. Finally, we argue that using spatial forms of analysis allows an interpretation of such assemblages that may account for their strengths and their shortcomings.

The Management of Computer Systems in Small Business: a preliminary analysis of the issues of importance to managers

Research investigating the relative importance of issues facing organisations in their management of Information Systems (IS) has grown rapidly since the early 1980s. However, this research has largely focused on large businesses, with little comparable data collected in the context of small businesses. This paper reports preliminary results from a pilot project investigating the relative importance of various IS concerns from the perspective of small business managers in the Albury-Wodonga region. Initial results confirm the operational focus of small business managers despite evidence of some concern with more strategic issues. In light of the preliminary nature of these findings, the paper concludes by identifying areas for further research.
