THE STRATEGIES FOR ENHANCING TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT AT THE BORDER PORTS BETWEEN MONGOLIA AND CHINA

Effective management of border port road transport is crucial for enhancing trade and economic potential at border ports and free zones. This involves long-term, medium-term, and short-term planning, as well as the implementation of integrated development policies to ensure sustainable and accessible improvements. By connecting border ports with railways and paved roads, enhancing transport and logistics competitiveness, optimizing cargo flow, and laying the groundwork for future transit capabilities, economic relations and cooperation between Mongolia and China can flourish, fostering the sustainable development of both nations. To boost trade turnover and establish free economic zones and road ports, it is imperative to enhance the management of border port road transport in alignment with Mongolia's regional development strategy. Currently, the concentration of the economy on only four ports leads to goods shortages, price hikes, and hindered business operations. Therefore, enhancing the type, quality, and availability of road transport services at border ports is essential to increase the throughput capacity of these crucial transportation hubs.

Institutional Strengthening and Improvement of National Logistics Performance Through The Establishment of A National Supply Chain Agency

The logistics sector has a very important role in driving Indonesia's economic growth. However, the national logistics system currently faces various obstacles that prevent it from reaching its full potential. Many challenges slow down the development of this sector. To overcome these obstacles, it is necessary to strengthen institutions that are able to integrate and optimize logistics performance throughout Indonesia. This research suggests the establishment of a National Supply Chain Agency as a solution to improve the coordination, efficiency, and effectiveness of the logistics system. The purpose of this study is to identify and evaluate the role and impact of the establishment of the National Supply Chain Agency on improving national logistics performance. This research uses a qualitative method with data collection from literature studies. The collected data were then analyzed through the stages of filtering, presenting, and drawing conclusions. The results showed that the establishment of the National Supply Chain Agency is an important step to improve logistics performance in Indonesia. The agency is expected to address current challenges, such as inefficiency, high logistics costs, and distribution delays. Thus, the National Supply Chain Agency is proposed as a solution to improve the competitiveness of national logistics, both in the domestic and international markets, and contribute to sustainable economic growth.

Can logistics enterprises improve their competitiveness through ESG in the context of digitalization? Evidence from China

PurposeThis investigation endeavors to examine the routes by which environmental–social–governance (ESG) performance influences the competitive landscape for logistics enterprises, with a particular emphasis on the function of digitalization in this complex process. The research underscores the significance of the ESG context in the realm of digitalization, providing valuable insights into its impact on the overall competitiveness of logistics enterprises.Design/methodology/approachThis research gathers information from a total of 90 logistics enterprises that are publicly traded on the Shanghai and Shenzhen A-share stock markets for analysis and model testing. Due to the multiple pathways of influence and the constrained size of the sample, it has been decided that the Piecewise structural–equation–modeling (SEM) approach will be employed.FindingsThe research reveals that ESG factors positively impact enterprises' competitiveness (EC). The augmentation of competitiveness is attributed to the moderating role of green technology innovation (GTI) and agency costs between ESG and EC. In the context of digitalization, the level of digitalization of logistics enterprises may create a capital squeeze effect on environmental performance, weakening competitiveness. Conversely, the level of digitalization positively regulates the promoting effect of governance performance on competitiveness.Originality/valueThis research provides a sound theoretical foundation for understanding how ESG contributes to boosting the competitiveness of Chinese logistics enterprises and extends the application of Piecewise SEM in the research field of logistics enterprise competitiveness. Furthermore, it offers a practical pathway for companies to implement ESG practices and foster competitiveness in digital environments.

Partially ordered set evaluation of logistics competitiveness of coastal port cites considering carbon emissions

Aiming at the problem of logistics competitiveness of coastal cities, a logistics competitiveness evaluation method based on weighted and partially ordered set combinations is proposed. Carbon emissions and inhalable pollutant concentrations are included in the evaluation scope, and an evaluation index system for the logistics competitiveness of 17 coastal port cities is constructed. The results show that: (1) the competitiveness of the logistics industry in 17 coastal port cities in China has been continuously improved, and the catch-up effect of logistics industry development in coastal port cities such as Shenzhen, Ningbo and Qingdao is obvious. The competitiveness level of the logistics industry shows an obvious spatial imbalance. (2) The competitiveness of the logistics industry in Yingkou, Beibu Gulf and other coastal port cities is low, and the difference in competitiveness of the logistics industry in coastal port cities is the main reason for the overall imbalance. (3) The technological innovation, openness and economic development level of the city and the hinterland have a positive impact on the competitiveness of the logistics industry, and the level of economic development has the greatest contribution to the variance of the competitiveness of the logistics industry. The logistics competitiveness of 17 cities is ranked and classified. The leading cities have core diffusion effects and promote the development of the competitiveness of each city. Suggestions on improving the competitiveness of cities are conducive to the high-quality development of China’s logistics industry.

Development of in-country logistics performance index for emerging economies: a case of Indian states

PurposeLogistics sector is recognized as one of the core enablers of the economic development of a nation. However, inefficiency in logistics operations impedes the achievement of intended targets by increasing the cost of doing business. Also, it is difficult to improve the efficiency of a country’s logistics operations without a metric for evaluating and understanding logistics capabilities and efficiency. Therefore, the present study has developed In-country Logistics Performance Index (ILP Index) to propose a benchmarking tool to measure the in-country logistics competitiveness, particularly in the setting of emerging economies, i.e. India.Design/methodology/approachThis study has developed a unified index using principal component analysis and quintile approach. In addition, the proposed index relies on several dimensions that are developed and illustrated using quantitative secondary panel data.FindingsThe findings of this study reveal that the quality of infrastructure, economy, and telecommunications are the three most important dimensions that may significantly support the growth of the transportation and logistics sector. The results reveal that Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra are the top performers whereas, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Jammu and Kashmir scores the least due to the insufficient logistics infrastructure as compared to other Indian states.Originality/valueGiven the extensive focus on international-level logistics index (like World Bank’s LPI) in the existing literature, this study intends to develop in-country logistics index to evaluate the logistics capabilities at the regional and state level. In addition, unlike prior studies, this study utilizes quantitative secondary data to eliminate cognitive and opinion bias. Moreover, this benchmarking tool would assist decision-makers in idealizing standard practices toward sustainable logistics operations. Additionally, the ILP index could serve the international investors in crucial decision-making, as it provides valuable insights into a country’s logistics readiness, influencing their investment choices and trade preferences. Finally, the proposed approach is adaptable to measuring the overall performance of any other industry/economy.

Unveiling the Drivers of Global Logistics Efficiency: Insights from Cross-Country Analysis

This study presents a novel approach to assess countries’ relative logistics performance differentials and identifies the underlying drivers using a data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. The findings offer strategic insights and provide nations with valuable guidance in navigating the dynamic landscape of global logistics competitiveness. Recognizing the pivotal role of logistics in fostering economic activity and contributing to sustainability, we utilize the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) within the DEA model to gauge efficiencies at the country level and scrutinize influencing factors. Our findings indicate that international shipment practices in the last decade, as well as tracking and tracing recently, no longer contribute to the competitiveness of the countries, despite their potential for improvement. The overall change in logistics efficiency during the last decade remained relatively marginal, primarily driven by the frontier-shift effect. However, notable disparities among the country performance groups, particularly in adopting technological advancements, are manifested in the frontier-shift effect. Countries with lower logistics performance should prioritize addressing structural challenges related to customs, infrastructure, quality of logistics services, and timeliness. Medium-performance countries, while benefiting from a focus on customs, tracking and tracing, and timeliness in the early 2010s, are advised to align their efforts with high-performance countries by emphasizing managerial aspects in recent times.

중국-유럽 화물열차 (CRE)의 물류 경쟁력 평가 및 발전방향

The China-Europe Freight Train (CRE) has gained significant attention as a crucial transportation mode strengthening logistics connections between China and Europe, facilitating international trade. This study focuses on the logistics competitiveness of CRE by comprehensively analyzing the logistics competitiveness of departure cities and the transportation competitiveness of regular routes. The logistics competitiveness of each departure city was evaluated using the entropy weight-TOPSIS method, revealing the significant influence of key hub nodes and transportation costs. The analysis results indicate that Yiwu and Zhengzhou demonstrated excellent performance in logistics competitiveness, emphasizing the pivotal role of hub nodes in the success of CRE. Furthermore, the variation in transportation costs within CRE negatively impacts overall competitiveness. Based on these findings, recommendations for the future development of CRE are presented, aiming to strengthen international trade and logistics cooperation between China and Europe. This study provides a profound understanding of CRE’s logistics network, laying the groundwork for enhancing logistics cooperation between China and Europe.

Research on the Measurement of Low-Carbon Competitiveness of Regional Cold Chain Logistics Capacity Based on Triangular Fuzzy Evaluation Rating–Gray Correlation Analysis

Cold chain logistics is an industry that generates high levels of carbon emissions. In the context of a low-carbon economy, it is crucial to recognize the low-carbon competitiveness of regional cold chain logistics and to implement effective measures to guide the development and improvement of their low-carbon competitiveness. This is essential for transitioning the economic development model and promoting low-carbon economic growth. This article proposes a low-carbon competitiveness evaluation model known as the Triangular Fuzzy–Gray Correlation Evaluation Model. This model is based on the Triangular Fuzzy Theory and Gray System Theory. According to the calculated logistics low-carbon competitiveness index, a scatter plot is used to rank and classify the evaluation objects. This method utilizes triangular fuzzy numbers as evaluation levels and further expands upon them by introducing the concept of gray correlation in group decision making. By constructing relative closeness based on curve similarity, the improved method possesses a strong ability to capture information and objectivity compared to traditional models. The selected critical indicators cover four significant aspects: low-carbon environment, low-carbon flow service capability, energy consumption in cold chain logistics, and low-carbon energy transition. Empirical research is being conducted using relevant data from Henan in 2022. The measured results are divided into four levels of competition. Using the diamond model, this study analyzes the development of low-carbon cold chain logistics at different levels in each city and provides corresponding recommendations.

The nexus between logistics competitiveness, logistics carbon emission efficiency and industrial structure upgrading: Evidence from China

The rapid development of the logistics industry has made considerable contributions to China’s industrial transformation and economy soaring. However, the improvement of logistics competitiveness often leads to high carbon emissions. Understanding the dynamic relationship between logistics competitiveness, logistics carbon emission efficiency, and industrial structure upgrading is of great significance for promoting the high-quality development of regional logistics under the context of the carbon-neutrality target. This study employed the panel vector autoregression (PVAR) model to analyse the relationship between logistics competitiveness, logistics carbon emission efficiency, and industrial structure upgrading based on the data from 30 provincial – regions in China for the period of 2007–2021. Meanwhile, the impulse response function was used to reflect the dynamic relationship between the variables of the model, and using variance decomposition to display the percentage change of one variable affected by another variable. The results show that there are self-adjustment effects in logistics competitiveness, logistics carbon emission efficiency, and industrial structure upgrading. Besides, a U-shaped effect is observed from the effect of logistics competitiveness on logistics carbon emission efficiency. It shows a negative impact in the short term and a positive impact in the long term. And it is the same as the effect of logistics carbon emission efficiency on logistics competitiveness, indicating the existence of the time-lag effect. Moreover, upgrading industrial structures has a positive promoting effect on both logistics carbon emission efficiency and logistics competitiveness. Thus, this research provides a unique perspective by exploring how to improve the development of the logistics industry by discussing the nexus between logistics competitiveness, logistics carbon emission efficiency, and industrial structure upgrading.

Strategizing a Logistics Framework for Organizational Transformation: A Technological Perspective

Logistics’ providers operate in a volatile environment amid uncertain demand patterns, complex movements, and ambiguous decisions corresponding to the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA) scenario. Such a scenario demands companies to rely on emerging technologies for flawless logistics’ operations in the VUCA world. Keeping this in mind, in this article, we focus on leveraging emerging technologies for logistics competitiveness in the VUCA world. An extant literature review on logistics and emerging technology articles was done through a systematic literature review, followed by content analysis. The study uses scientific databases, such as Scopus, ABI/INFORM, and Web of Science, to gather works published from 1992 to 2022, resulting in 77 articles. The study found key facets related to logistics in the VUCA world through text mining, leading to a unique framework based on the VUCA world and technologies known as VUCAT. Furthermore, VUCAT motivates logistics’ providers to digitalize their operations and provides insights for day-to-day activities. Furthermore, the study proposes an implementation framework for VUCAT with an economic value determination for organization transformation in the VUCA world.

A Study of Competitiveness in Logistics Firms in Vietnam

Objective: This study aims to evaluate the competitiveness of logistics firms in Hanoi and neighboring provinces in Vietnam, and compare respondents' assessments of competitiveness in logistics firms. Method: The sample size in this study was adjusted to the regression model. The research sample consists of 225 respondents working for logistics firms in Hanoi and neighboring provinces. We designed a questionnaire related to the competitiveness of logistics firms. We determined the observed variables (scales) of the competitiveness of logistics firms based on previous studies and expert interview results. We use both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including reliability analysis through the Cronbach alpha coefficient, EFA analysis, the independent T test, and ANOVA analysis. Results: The findings in this study prove that four attributes of the competitiveness of logistics firms are quite high. All the attributes of the variables are statistically significant. There is no statistically significant difference in the competitiveness of logistics firms between these different marital statuses, work locations, career seniority, and job positions. Conclusions: This research broadens our understanding of the importance of the competitiveness of logistics firms in Hanoi and neighboring provinces in Vietnam. This research has expanded the competitiveness of logistics firms in Hanoi and neighboring provinces in Vietnam as an activity with profound business performance impacts. This study can be a basis for other research works and policy design oriented to achieve a comprehensive measurement of business performance and make business strategy in the firm. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of business administration science, especially in the logistics sector.

Comprehensive evaluation for the sustainable development of fresh agricultural products logistics enterprises based on combination empowerment-TOPSIS method.

To solve the problems of environmental pollution and resource waste caused by the rapid development of cold chain logistics of fresh agricultural products and improve the competitiveness of logistics enterprises in the market, a performance evaluation method of cold chain logistics enterprises based on the combined empowerment-TOPSIS was proposed. Firstly, from the five dimensions of cold supply chain capacity, service quality, economic efficiency, informatization degree and development ability, a comprehensive evaluation system of logistics enterprises' sustainable development is constructed, which consists of 16 indicators, such as storage and preservation capacity, distribution accuracy, and equipment input rate. Then, G1 method and entropy weight method are used to calculate the subjective and objective weights of the evaluation indicators, and the combined weights are calculated with the objective of minimizing the deviation of the subjective and objective weighted attributes. Finally, the TOPSIS method is used to calculate the comprehensive evaluation indicators. The results show that the established performance evaluation model can effectively evaluate the performance of fresh agricultural products logistics enterprises and provide theoretical basis for enterprise logistics management.

Evaluation of Urban Logistics Competitiveness Based on Principal Component Analysis

The level of regional economic development is, to a certain extent, reflected by the logistics competitiveness of cities. This paper selects the logistics competitiveness of 21 cities in Sichuan Province, in order to assess the level of logistics competitiveness of cities in Sichuan Province, selects 21 provincial and municipal cities to get logistics indicators, using SPSS 23.0 software to get the evaluation results of the principal components of the analysis and sorting, and based on the results of the evaluation of the development of the corresponding recommendations. The results show that the evaluation results analyzed by the software are basically in line with the actual situation and can provide a reference basis for government departments to guide the development of cities.

Barriers to Applying Last-Mile Logistics in the Egyptian Market: An Extension of the Technology Acceptance Model

Drawing on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), this research aims to investigate the impact of social, environmental, and technological barriers on adopting the last-mile logistics application. This research used a self-administrative questionnaire to collect 1060 respondents from the Egyptian market and analysed it using partial least square structural equation modeling. The findings revealed that some elements could obstruct the implementation of last-mile delivery technologies, namely complexity, collaboration efforts between users and application developers and the impact of technical knowledge and expertise on the potentially involved users. The sharing economy helps organisations reduce contaminants, emissions and carbon footprints, and last-mile logistics is one of the tools of the sharing economy that can enhance the productivity and competitiveness of logistics and boost consumer fulfillment. This research will help enhance organisations’ performance in Egypt as a developing country and push towards applying environmental sustainability practices, as it introduces a tool to enhance customer satisfaction and reduce emissions by illustrating how last-mile logistics can be implemented. This is particularly important as last-mile logistics face some implementation barriers, especially in developing countries. In addition, it will help in extending the theory through conceptualising its abstract ideas with the research variables and applying it in a different context.

Research on Crowdsourcing Distribution Model of Community E-commerce Logistics Development

This paper provides an overview of the concept and characteristics of community e-commerce logistics, crowdsourcing logistics, existing models and the current situation and problem analysis of community logistics development, analyzes the necessity and feasibility of developing crowdsourcing distribution model for community e-commerce logistics, designs a crowdsourcing distribution platform for community e-commerce logistics from the perspective of considering security, reliability and flexibility, and proposes measures such as information risk guarantee, quality risk guarantee, security risk guarantee, capital risk guarantee and legal risk guarantee, in order to provide reference and reference for the study of community e-commerce logistics crowdsourcing distribution model. It also proposes measures such as information risk protection, quality risk protection, security risk protection, capital risk protection and legal risk protection to provide reference and reference for the research on the crowdsourcing delivery model of community e-commerce logistics, with a view to promoting the development of community e-commerce logistics delivery and improving the competitiveness of community e-commerce logistics.

Evaluating the Selection Factors for Vietnamese Last-Mile Delivery Service Providers using Best Worst Method

Recent trends in supply chain show that last mile delivery is one of the fastest growing segments in logistics yet, it remains one the most challenging ones in terms of reliability, cost, and consumers’ requirements. This study aims to identify the factors directly affecting the competitiveness of logistics companies providing last-mile delivery service under a consumers’ perspective. The study employs a best-worst method (BWM) to assess which alternative and which criteria are the preferred ones when selecting a last-mile service provider in Vietnam. The selected criteria include shipping cost, lead-time, customer service, insurance policy and delivery liability, and the alternative are three last-mile service providers namely GHN, GHTK, JT, the largest logistics companies operating in Vietnam. The study findings reveal that GHTK company is the most competitive last-mile service provider compared to the others due to outstanding intrinsic characteristics and competitive advantage. In particular, the findings of the paper show that customer value "Delivery cost" as the most important criterion in domestic last-mile delivery whilst "Customer Service" is the least important one in the Vietnamese market.

Winning customer satisfaction toward omnichannel logistics service quality based on an integrated importance-performance analysis and three-factor theory: Insight from Thailand

Electronic commerce (e-commerce) is one of the fastest-growing businesses in the retail sector, especially in Asia. Owing to intense competition, retailers seek to consolidate all customer touchpoints into a single channel to enhance customer shopping experience. The omnichannel has emerged as a key strategic weapon in e-commerce retail business because its adoption hinges on customer perceptions of omnichannel logistics service quality. By drawing on an integrated importance-performance analysis, and a three-factor theory framework, this study examines how customers perceive and assess this quality. A leading e-commerce retailer in Thailand was used in the empirical study. Through a comprehensive literature review, 19 omnichannel logistics service quality attributes were determined based on customer shopping journeys. The attributes were categorized into four quadrants using importance-performance analysis and three-factor theory. As a result, attributes in each quadrant required different management schemes. Furthermore, performance benchmarking in customer satisfaction with omnichannel logistics service quality attributes between the case study and its best competitor was conducted using a performance ratio analysis. This study contributes to the omnichannel logistics literature in terms of assessing customer satisfaction; for e-commerce retail businesses, it provides insights into how managers can win customer satisfaction in the omnichannel logistics competition. Other business sectors that aim to improve customer satisfaction can also apply the framework proposed herein.

The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in trade can automate routine tasks and enhance efficiency, prediction, decision-making, safety, and cybersecurity. ChatGPT, which enables multilingual translation, customer service, and interaction with traders, is expected to be a game-changer that provides theoretical and practical insights for implementing AI in trade. Based on a review of previous research and interviews with trade experts, this study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the potential use of ChatGPT and offer theoretical and practical implications for implementing AI in trade. Although the utilization of AI can increase efficiency and competitiveness in logistics, finance, and trade transactions, policies that consider regulation, information equity, job displacement, and social responsibility, among other factors, are needed. The study also indicates that the limitations of ChatGPT's learning data and recognition abilities should be taken into account, and ethical considerations and verification procedures must be in place to ensure the accuracy and reliability of information. Finally, human judgment and decision-making must always play a crucial role in decision-making processes.
