Trait and plasticity evolution under competition and mutualism in evolving pairwise yeast communities

Although we have a good understanding of how phenotypic plasticity evolves in response to abiotic environments, we know comparatively less about responses to biotic interactions. We experimentally tested how competition and mutualism affected trait and plasticity evolution of pairwise communities of genetically modified brewer’s yeast. We quantified evolutionary changes in growth rate, resource use efficiency (RUE), and their plasticity in strains evolving alone, with a competitor, and with a mutualist. Compared to their ancestors, strains evolving alone had lower RUE and RUE plasticity. There was also an evolutionary tradeoff between changes in growth rate and RUE in strains evolving alone, suggesting selection for increased growth rate at the cost of efficiency. Strains evolving with a competitive partner had higher growth rates, slightly lower RUE, and a stronger tradeoff between growth rate and efficiency. In contrast, mutualism had opposite effects on trait evolution. Strains evolving with a mutualist had slightly lower growth rates, higher RUE, and a weak evolutionary tradeoff between growth rate and RUE. Despite their different effects on trait evolution, competition and mutualism had little effect on plasticity evolution for either trait, suggesting that abiotic factors could be more important than biotic factors in generating selection for plasticity.

Improving dual cover crop mixtures to increase shoot biomass production and weed suppression potential

IntroductionCover crop services depend on biomass production and species composition of the cover crop stand. In this study, we investigated the interactions in shoot biomass of dual cover crop mixtures and their competitiveness to suppress weeds before winter under different growing conditions.MethodsA field experiment was performed on sandy loam soil in Triesdorf, Germany, for two consecutive years. The cover crop species white mustard (Sinapis alba L.), oil radish (Raphanus sativus var. oleiformis L.), phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia J.), Egyptian clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.), common vetch (Vicia sativa L.), field pea (Pisum sativum L.), and field bean (Vicia faba L.) were grown in pure stands or dual mixtures. Cover crops were sown in August, and shoot biomass was harvested at the end of the vegetation period. Cover crop shoot biomass was dried, and the share of each species and the sown test weed (Brassica napus L.) were determined.ResultsThe share of shoot biomass of a cover crop species in dual-species mixtures was closely related to its shoot biomass in its pure stand. In both years, mustard and phacelia showed similar interactions in shoot biomass production when growing with a second species. Regarding competitiveness against weeds, cruciferous species outperformed other cover crop species and could suppress weeds even if they were mixed with a less competitive partner. Weed suppression of mixtures with phacelia depended on the second component in the mixture and was more effective in a dry season. Legume species, especially Egyptian clover and common vetch could not suppress weeds in a pure stand.DiscussionOur results show that species with high weed suppression potential as single stands retain this ability in dual cover crop mixtures, regardless of the suppression potential of the second species that completes the mixture.

Competition or cooperation? Exploring the impact of dominant modes on the competitive relationship in CLSC

PurposeThe paper proposes a two-level closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) dynamic competitive model based on different competitive cooperation situations, and explores the impact of competitive cooperation methods on the pricing strategies, recycling and remanufacturing strategies and competitive model selection strategies of supply chain firms.Design/methodology/approachThis paper establishes a CLSC game consisting of a manufacturer and two retailers. Firstly, five CLSC models are established in both horizontal and vertical dimensions, each of which competes with one another. Secondly, the recycling and remanufacturing pricing strategies are analyzed under different competition or cooperation models. Finally, the results are verified through numerical analysis.FindingsThe overall profitability of the CLSC is highest when the manufacturer–retailer partnership alliance is in place. The relationship between retailers and manufacturers is also found to be the best way to achieve overall optimization of the CLSC.Originality/valueThe paper investigates the relationship between the competitive partnership and the total profit of the CLSC, taking into account how to optimize the overall benefit, and focusing on how to optimize the individual interests of each participating enterprise. The results can provide basis and guidance for managers' pricing decision and competition cooperation.

Research on the Impact of Fiscal Decentralization on Governance Performance of Air Pollution—Empirical Evidence of 30 Provinces from China

Air pollution governance is of great benefit to future generations, and its steady performance improvement is inextricably linked to the fiscal relationships between the central and local governments in China’s decentralization context. Based on the provincial panel data from 2011 to 2019, this paper constructs a comprehensive index of air pollution governance performance using the entropy method. Then, the relationship between fiscal decentralization and governance performance of air pollution is measured using a two-way fixed effects model. The results show that the increase in fiscal decentralization is not conducive to the improvement in governance performance of air pollution. Moreover, fiscal decentralization weakens the positive impact of pollution control investment on enhancing governance performance of air pollution while easing the negative impact of local government capital attraction competition on enhancing governance performance of air pollution. In terms of regional level, fiscal decentralization in northern and inland regions significantly negatively impacts air pollution governance performance. However, the above effects are not significant in the southern and coastal regions. The policy implications of the above findings are as follows: first, the central government ought to optimize the financial decentralization system and promote multiple performance assessments. Second, it is essential to adjust the structure of fiscal spending and promote competitive partnerships among local governments. Third, emphasis should be placed on collaborative governance of key regions while developing an effective incentive mechanism.

PKM PENDAMPINGAN DAN PELATIHAN LARI 100 METER BERORIENTASI COMPETETITION PARTNER PADA ATLET NATIONAL PARALYMPIC COMITTE (NPC) INDONESIA

The problem in Indonesia is that the practice of combining the results of the development of sports science and technology and the research results of sports academics in the training process of these athletes is still always encountering obstacles, because in addition to the centre for implementing sports science and technology it is not yet available and has not been integrated into athlete training programs, also because there is always a tendency resistance from practitioners in the field. Practitioners in the field still find it difficult to accept if the research results of academics are to be applied to the training process separately because they are often considered to interfere with the training process. Meanwhile, they are not very open and have the awareness to absorb information on the development of sports science and technology from scientific journals or other scientific forums, because they are too busy with tasks in the field. One of the sports is a physical condition and we jointly believe that there is a change in the improvement of athlete's achievement as a result of the action of applying science and technology in the training program in the sport concerned at the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia. In addition, there is also a transfer of knowledge or changes in the behaviour of the trainer in the training process. This assistance is expected to produce a training model that can be implemented in the training process to improve the achievement of national superior sports that are oriented to the application of sports science and technology. The objectives of this PkM are: (i) To provide trainers with knowledge related to improving the 100-meter running oriented to competition partner, (ii) To provide assistance and training on the 100-meter running rules for Indonesian NPC athletes; (iii) to provide manuals related to competition partners for Indonesian NPC athletes. Contemporary European Union (EU) and China relations are marked by a simultaneously beneficial, conflictual and competitive partnership. This is aptly evident in the cyber technology realm. This paper contends that the European Union’s gestaltian approach towards China can be understood with the aid of three theoretical positions: (1) an institutional perspective; (2) as a values-based actor; and, (3) a realpolitik dimension. The arguments advanced in the paper, ultimately imply that the EU’s approach towards China can provide various EU domestic and global actors’ space to exploit contradictions, notably when it comes to cyber technology diplomacy. This has the attendant effect of fostering future fissures in the EU’s overall engagement with China.

FEATURES OF INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE IN AIRPORT DEVELOPMENT ON INNOVATIVE BASIS

Introduction. In the war and post-war periods for Ukraine, the issue of socio-economic development on an innovative basis receives special attention. One of such important and promising directions in Ukraine today as an equal and competitive partnership in the system of international trade and economic relations can be the development of the aviation sector, in particular in the direction of airport operations. The foundation of the expanded reproduction of the potential of the airport and its infrastructural component in the wartime and postwar period is the timely implementation of advanced innovative technologies based on efficiency and systematicity. In the implementation of a successful innovative model of airport development, as evidenced by international experience, a decisive role is played by the system of state regulation, which operates with effective coordination-integration, administrative-fiscal financial-investment levers and tools of strategic, regulatory, legal and resource support of state economic policy. On the other hand, in Ukraine, as a result of the attack of the Russian Federation in the field of airport development on an innovative basis in the aviation field, the trends of critical deterioration of the technical and economic parameters of the functioning of the airport infrastructure are increasing. Under such circumstances, the state priority should be the solution of the extremely difficult task, which consists in ending the war, liberating the territories of Ukraine from the aggressor of the Russian Federation, restoring the socio-economic development of the regions of the country, restoring the activities of airports on the basis of innovative transformations, which require the development and implementation of adequate requirements and imperatives of public , scientific and technical progress of the integral concept of modernization of the state regulation of innovative development of the airport infrastructure. Materials and methods. Informational and statistical materials, normative legal acts, and national airport development programs made up the information base of the research. The positive international experience of airport development can be used in Ukraine in the war and post-war periods for the purpose of economic recovery of the country. Results and discussion. As a result of the research of international experience regarding the functioning of airports on an innovative basis, it was found that there are the main factors of their functioning in the countries. Unlike the countries of the world, there are factors in Ukraine that restrain their development, in particular, the presence of military actions in connection with Russia's attack on Ukraine. In this regard, the international experience of the operation of airports in the war and post-war periods was analyzed. Peculiarities of institutional support for the functioning of airports, development of cooperation, etc. are considered. Conclusions. Based on the study of the peculiarities of the functioning of airports, proposals have been developed for their activation in Ukraine during the war and post-war periods. A significant development is the development of proposals in the direction of the introduction of concession agreements in Ukraine, taking into account the peculiarities of the experience of the countries of the world.

Long non-coding RNA NHEG1/hsa-miR-665/HMGB1 axis is involved in the regulation of neuroblastoma progression

ABSTRACT Long non-coding (lncRNA) neuroblastoma highly expressed 1 (NHEG1) has been reorganized as a prognostic factor in neuroblastoma (NB), but the molecular mechanisms in the suppression of neuroblastoma remain to be elucidated. In our study, we explored the functional roles of lncRNA NHEG1 in neuroblastoma and the underlying molecular mechanism. We collected NB tumor samples and adjacent normal tissues to compare lncRNA NHEG1 expression. Through bioinformatic target prediction, we selected potential downstream effectors of lncRNA NHEG1 for functional validation in NB cell lines. We observed that lncRNA NHEG1 was significantly upregulated in NB tissues as compared to the normal tissues. In NB tissues, lncRNA NHEG1 expression showed an inverse correlation with hsa-miR-665 (miR-655), but a positive correlation with high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1). In NB cell lines, lncRNA NHEG1 knockdown caused the upregulation of miR-665 and the downregulation of HMGB1. Through a series of functional assays, we further demonstrated that lncRNA Nheg1 knockdown suppressed cell proliferation, migration and invasion of NB cells, which could be rescued by miR-665 inhibitor and HMGB1 overexpression. Together, our data demonstrated that lncRNA NHEG1 serves as a competitive partner to negatively regulate the activity of miR-665, which relieves the inhibition on HMGB1 expression and promotes the aggressive phenotype of neuroblastoma cells. Our study indicates that lncRNA NHEG1/miR-665/HMGB1 axis may play an important role in regulating the aggressiveness and the progression of neuroblastoma.

Agenda Control and Timing of Bill Initiation: A Temporal Perspective on Coalition Governance in Parliamentary Democracies

Although democratic governance imposes temporal constraints, the timing of government policy making activities such as bill initiation is still poorly understood. This holds especially under coalition governments, in which government bills need to find approval by a partner party in parliament. We propose a dynamic temporal perspective in which ministers do not know whether they face a cooperative or competitive partner at the beginning of a term, but they learn this over time and use their agenda control to time further bill initiation in response. A circular regression analysis using data on more than 25,000 government bills from 11 parliamentary democracies over 30 years supports this temporal perspective, showing that ministers initiate bills later in the term when their previous bills have experienced greater scrutiny. Ministers further delay bill initiation when coalition parties’ incentives to deviate from compromise increase and when they have less power to constrain their bills’ scrutiny.

Inventor group identification approach for selecting university-industry collaboration partners

University-industry collaboration plays an important role in the successful and innovative growth of technology-based firms. For collaborations to be successful, firms should exert considerable effort in selecting the right partner. University partner selection and recommendation approaches have been proposed; however, few studies have focused on the identification of university inventor groups—sets of inventors that are actual candidates for collaborations. Thus, this study proposes a patent-based partner identification approach for identifying appropriate university inventor groups for university-industry collaboration. The proposed approach involves: 1) collecting patent and institution identification data; 2) grouping university inventors based on assignee and co-invention information; 3) screening candidate inventor groups with technical expertise related to the firm's needs; 4) identifying competitive partner groups by evaluating the technological competence, concentration, and size of the candidate inventor groups. Through a case study of an actual target firm, we show that the proposed approach can identify appropriate university partner inventor groups. In the case study, 49 candidate inventor groups are screened, and 12 of them are identified as competitive. This study provides an effective approach based on patent data for identifying inventor groups belonging to universities that are well-suited for collaborative research and development projects with technology-based firms.

Competitive partnership in the context of strategic management of construction companies competitiveness

The article presents methodological approaches to the definition of competition as a key socio-economic category at the level of competition essence. Based on the generalization and analysis of methodological approaches to the definition of the competition essence as a phenomenon, system and process, it was determined that, with all the differences, they consider competition as a confrontation between competing subjects (within industries, spheres, markets and segments); it can be both active and passive, capable of being activated in certain circumstances. The ambition of competitors to establish, preserve, develop and use their own advantages, and simplify the competitive environment is implemented through the establishment of interaction between competition subjects, legitimately identified as a competitive partnership. Use of “competitive partnership” term is substantiated; its content and formation methods are identified. At the same time, it is emphasized that the management of the competitive partnership system, as a corporate-type management, can be implemented using corporate strategies. The article considers possible organization of a competitive partnership in the context of vertical and horizontal integration and, in general, in integrated economic systems within the construction complex framework.

Improving the Competitiveness of Enterprises Operating in the Construction Services Market

The purpose of the study is to analyze the tools that exist today to improve the competitiveness of companies in the Russian construction and repair services market, which promote their progressive development from the perspective of partnership management. The competitors’ ambition to establish, maintain, develop and utilize their own advantages and to simplify the competitive environment is realized through the establishment of interaction between the competing subjects, which can be legally identified as a competitive partnership. The authors consider the possibility of establishing a competitive partnership in the context of horizontal merger and network associations as part of the investment-and-construction complex. This research describes the proposals for expanding the practical scope of partnership at the construction services market as a factor of improving the competitiveness level of enterprises on the basis of using strategic approaches to managing production and economic activities and improving the marketing business process support.

Abstract B047: Community-academic partners working in a small grants program

Abstract Community-based participatory research can help reduce health disparities among underserved populations. The New Mexico State University - Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Partnership for the Advancement of Cancer Research (NMSU – Fred Hutch PACR) aims to reduce cancer health disparities in part through the establishment of community-academic partnerships. The Outreach Core of the PACR has supported a small grants program since 2015 to award funds to competitive community-academic partnership teams addressing regional cancer or health disparities issues through health education. Each year, the Outreach Core staff presents a grant-writing workshop to assist community groups in the development of competitive proposals and to identify academic partners at NMSU. Participants at the grant-writing workshop submit proposals, which are then reviewed by two NMSU faculty researchers. All participants, including the awardees, receive the reviewers’ feedback on their proposal. Over the past four cycles, the grant-writing workshop has trained 60 community members. The top two proposals are funded each year. To date, eight different proposals have been funded, six at $7500 each and two at $5,000 each. All of the funded projects undergo an IRB review at NMSU before the start of the research project. The NMSU academic partners are involved with the community groups through the design, submission of Human Subjects protocol to the IRB, and through data analysis and reporting. Examples of small grant proposals will be presented, including a discussion of how their partnerships worked. This interaction between the community groups and research academics increases the relevance of academic research by assisting the community groups in evaluating their novel educational interventions through robust research projects. Furthermore, these small grant partnerships may serve to provide pilot data for more extensive efforts funded by other agencies. Russian–Chinese Academic Mobility As Competitive Partnership

Trends and characteristics of Russian–Chinese academic mobility are considered as a complex phenomenon, the impact of which goes far beyond the framework of bilateral relations in higher education. The prevailing target model of development of Russian–Chinese academic mobility, based on quantitative indicators, is shown as not accounting for the process specifics and not enough harmonized with solutions to other no less important tasks associated with pursuing the interests of the Russian Federation in the international arena and achieving the goals of Russia’s national development. Particular attention is paid to complex causal relationships and multilevel effects that accompany functioning processes in Russian–Chinese relations in the subject area under study. The competitive partnership model, proposed by the authors to describe interaction between the two countries, appears promising both for conceptualizing the diversity of processes and opposite effects of Russian–Chinese cooperation in higher education and as a theoretical basis for creating an effective target model and improving the humanitarian dimension of cooperation between Russia and the PRC.

Competitive partners in development financing: China and Japan expanding overseas infrastructure investment

In the aftermath of the global financial crisis, with the world in search for new economic engines, China and Japan have explicitly given their answer through their expansion of overseas infrastructure investments. This study focuses on the flagship sector of high-speed railways (HSR) and examines what kinds of development financing China and Japan have adopted in making these investments. It asks the following questions: What similarities are there in the Chinese and Japanese approaches to investments in overseas infrastructure, and how do they differ from traditional Western development financing? Also, in what ways have China and Japan changed their approaches to overseas infrastructure projects during this process? It argues that in the process of expanding overseas infrastructure investments and competing for infrastructure projects, China and Japan have become ‘competitive partners’ in challenging the traditional norms of development financing represented by the Washington Consensus and the Development Assistance Committee (DAC). To be more specific, China and Japan have adopted each other’s practices of tied commercial financing, heavy government involvement, focusing on physical infrastructure and industrialization, and showing respect for host-country forms of governance. In particular, by joining China in the new game of exporting infrastructure and through its own ‘quality infrastructure investment’ initiative, Japan has broken out of the constraints of DAC norms as an aid donor and endorsed some fundamental Chinese approaches to development and development cooperation, which in their turn were inspired by earlier Japanese practices.

Regulatory Competition in European Partnership Law: A Case of Alternative Investment Funds

This paper analyses the recent reforms of a limited partnership used for structuring alternative investment funds in the UK (2017), Luxembourg (2013) and France (2015). The introduction of the Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (2011) has prompted the EU Member States to modernise their legal structures to get ahead of an increasing competition as a leading fund and fund manager domicile. This paper argues that the UK Private Fund Limited Partnership is the most competitive legal structure in terms of management rights accorded to investors and tax-transparency. Luxembourg provides an equally competitive limited partnership model, which will be used extensively by fund managers and investors post-Brexit. A regulatory competition in partnership law will incite other EU Member States to review their legislation applicable to this legal form.

ПОНЯТТЯ ПУБЛІЧНОГО УПРАВЛІННЯ У ВІТЧИЗНЯНОМУ НАУКОВОМУ ДИСКУРСІ

The formation of Ukraine as a full-fledged competitive partner in the world civilization requires scientific substantiation of the principles of public administration, which can be interpreted as management, carried out on the basis of the will of the community (a collective of people) and implemented by community-defined actors, to meet the needs and achieve the goals of the community as an object of management, which in fact means the functioning and development of the collective of people. The modern system of state and self-government management in Ukraine is undergoing a period of serious modernization due to the evolution of state-political factors of the improvement of mechanisms of social development, which is connected with the formation of a strong state, including all aspects of its development – economic, political, scientific, socio-cultural, and others. That is why the article is devoted to an attempt to analyze the content and essence of the concept of «public management» in the context of the research carried out by domestic scientists and, accordingly, determine the patterns of its formation within the existing scientific traditions, which will serve as the basis for the further formation of a unified scientific and theoretical basis of public administration research in Ukraine. The article reveals the concept of «public management» in the national scientific thought. The main factors that influenced the emergence of such a new form of government in the public sector as public administration were identified. The correlation between the concepts of «public management» and «public administration» is analyzed. Based on the analysis of the scientific views of domestic scientists, it is proved that the concept of «public administration» is not identical with the concept of «state administration», which is widely used in Ukraine. The identification of these concepts leads to a certain confusion in the sense of such phenomenon as «public administration», which is considered inadmissible in the context of the need to form a stable categorical apparatus. It is proved that these concepts should not be used as identical, they require a thorough study in Ukraine and systematization of existing work. The necessity to study the process of formation of public administration in Ukraine, its specificity and the dynamics of the concept change and possible variants of development perspectives with the consideration of all possible trends in the field of management of the public and public sphere is substantiated. The use of the proposed approaches of domestic researchers regarding the notion and content of «public management» as a complex, multi-faceted and ambiguous phenomenon in the public sphere is one of the prerequisites for the formation of a common approach to understanding «public administration» in the context of certain aspects of public administration.

Why should I trust you? Investigating young children’s spontaneous mistrust in potential deceivers

Children must learn not to trust everyone to avoid being taken advantage of. In the current study, 5- and 7-year-old children were paired with a partner whose incentives were either congruent (cooperative condition) or conflicting (competitive condition) with theirs. Children of both ages were more likely to mistrust information spontaneously provided by the competitive than the cooperative partner, showing a capacity for detecting contextual effects on incentives. However, a high proportion of children, even at age 7, initially trusted the competitive partner. After being misled once, almost all children mistrusted the partner on a second trial irrespective of the partner’s incentives. These results demonstrate that while even school age children are mostly trusting, they are only beginning to spontaneously consider other’s incentives when interpreting the truthfulness of their utterances. However, after receiving false information only once they immediately switch to an untrusting attitude.

Review of the food processing supply chain literature: a UK, India bilateral context

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to understand the meaning and operationalization of food supply chains in the context of the UK and India.Design/methodology/approachThe paper follows the systematic literature review approach. The paper examines 99 articles published in peer-reviewed-journals from 1995 to 2017.FindingsFindings reveal that food supply chain literature is explored along themes of procurement, food processing, innovation, traceability, safety, environment and sustainability, food policy, quality, health, consumer behavior and packaging. Within these themes, the UK researchers have primarily addressed vertical integration, coordination, safety, competitiveness and transparency and information technology. Indian researchers have focused on issues such as consumer perceptions, retail format choice, organic, health and wellness products. An empirical category is the most popular approach. The survey method is the most popular approach followed by the single case studies.Research limitations/implicationsThe paper contributes to the body of knowledge by presenting a unified synthesis of articles dealing with the food supply chain in the bilateral context of the UK and India.Practical implicationsThe policy makers could use findings for conceptualization of complementarities and possible food supply chain networks.Social implicationsFood processing activities may have potential to provide sustaining livelihoods to around sixty percent of the Indian population which depends on the agriculture.
