There are five discreet regions of sensory epithelia within the membraneous labyrinth of the inner ear of the lemon shark, Negaprion brevirostris: The macula utriculus, macula sacculus, macula lagena, macula neglecta, and crista ampullaris. These five regions were studied by SEM to determine the population distribution, polarization, and for direct comparison of their particular hair cell types. Intravital perfusion of the membraneous labyrinth was performed with shark buffered:4% glutaraldehyde, 1% OsO4, or Parducz fixative and the various sensory regions were isolated during microdissection.
