Identifying influential nodes based on the disassortativity and community structure of complex network

The complex networks exhibit significant heterogeneity in node connections, resulting in a few nodes playing critical roles in various scenarios, including decision-making, disease control, and population immunity. Therefore, accurately identifying these influential nodes that play crucial roles in networks is very important. Many methods have been proposed in different fields to solve this issue. This paper focuses on the different types of disassortativity existing in networks and innovatively introduces the concept of disassortativity of the node, namely, the inconsistency between the degree of a node and the degrees of its neighboring nodes, and proposes a measure of disassortativity of the node (DoN) by a step function. Furthermore, the paper analyzes and indicates that in many real-world network applications, such as online social networks, the influence of nodes within the network is often associated with disassortativity of the node and the community boundary structure of the network. Thus, the influential metric of node based on disassortativity and community structure (mDC) is proposed. Extensive experiments are conducted in synthetic and real networks, and the performance of the DoN and mDC is validated through network robustness experiments and immune experiment of disease infection. Experimental and analytical results demonstrate that compared to other state-of-the-art centrality measures, the proposed methods (DoN and mDC) exhibits superior identification performance and efficiency, particularly in non-disassortative networks and networks with clear community structures. Furthermore, we find that the DoN and mDC exhibit high stability to network noise and inaccuracies of the network data.

Application of K-Core analysis based on complex network community structure to rolling bearing fault diagnosis

A complex network is a method to analyze nonlinear time series on multiple temporal and spatial scales. K-core analysis of several typical nonlinear series was studied, and then based on this, a fast algorithm method was employed to divide the community structure. According to the definition of k-core, the rolling bearings complex network was divided into different cores at the router level, and the main characteristic quantities such as degree distribution and clustering coefficient of every k-core can be analyzed. The results show that there is a corresponding relationship between the characteristic parameters and the community structure of the bearing. The analysis results show that compared with the traditional method, the method of complex network community structure and k-core analysis has a better diagnosis effect.

Towards improving community detection in complex networks using influential nodes

Abstract Complex network analysis is inspired by empirical studies of real-world networks such as computer networks, technology networks and social networks. The analysis of community structure in complex networks is understood as an important issue by the research society. A community is a set of nodes in a network where the density of connections is high. The insight in the literature shows many approaches to identify influential nodes, but these approaches only lead to finding community centres. Meanwhile, clustering techniques are effectively used for community detection, where they can reveal group structure and hidden connections by considering topological and demographic information. This article presents an ensemble clustering algorithm based on influential nodes to improve community detection in complex networks. Considering different characteristics of the network, the proposed method seeks to discover common interests between users and their behaviours to identify the most suitable communities. First, a set of influential nodes are identified as community centres. Then, these centres are considered as cluster centres. After that, primary clusters are created based on the determined centres. Finally, the primary clusters are reclustered to form the final clusters. Here, the final clusters are considered as communities of users in the network. The simulation has been performed on real-world networks and the results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method. Specifically, the communities identified by the proposed method are 2.1% better than the best existing state-of-the-art method in terms of modularity. Obfuscating Community Structure in Complex Network With Evolutionary Divide-and-Conquer Strategy

As the number of social network users grows exponentially with increasingly complex profiles, community detection algorithms play a critical role in user portrait analysis. The associated privacy concerns, however, have not sufficiently received the attention that it deserves. In this work, we investigate methods for obfuscating the original community structure by modifying a small number of connections imperceptibly so as to protect the privacy of users. The existing evolutionary models have some successes in this type of NP-hard problem but can only be applied to small-scale datasets, rendering them inadequate for real-world applications. To alleviate this problem, we propose an original and novel CoeCo, a cooperative evolutionary community obfuscation model. In CoeCo, we leverage the divide-and-conquer strategy and put forward a co-evolutionary optimization algorithm suitable for community structure, in which two different fitness functions promote each other to find the optimal edge set. In addition, the motif hypergraph and permanence are used to improve population initialization. The experimental results indicate that our proposed method can achieve excellent efficacy in obfuscating community structure and also greatly reduces running time.

Node Multi-Attribute Network Community Healthcare Detection Based on Graphical Matrix Factorization

The significance of community structure in complex networks, such as social, biological, and online networks, has been widely recognized. Detecting communities in social media networks typically relies on two sources of information: the network’s topological structure and node attributes. Incorporating rich node content attribute information poses both flexibility and challenges for community detection. Traditional approaches either focus on mining one information source or linearly combining results from both sources, which fails to effectively fuse the information. This paper introduces a practical collaborative learning approach that explores the multi-dimensional attribute characteristics of nodes to facilitate community division. By leveraging graphical matrix decomposition, the proposed algorithm, CDGMF, improves the effectiveness and robustness of community detection. Experimental results demonstrate the method’s ability to effectively utilize node attribute information for guiding community detection, resulting in higher-quality community divisions.

A nature-inspired algorithm to find community structure in complex networks

Complex networks have in generally communities. These communities are very important. Network’s communities represent sets of nodes, which are very connected. In this research, we developed a new method to find the community structure in networks. Our method is based on flower pollination algorithm (FPA) witch is used in the splitting process. The splitting of networks in our method maximizes a function of quality called modularity. We provide a general framework for implementing our new method to find community structure in networks. We present the effectiveness of our method by comparison with some known methods on computer-generated and real-world networks.

Random search immune algorithm for community detection

Community detection is a prominent research topic in Complex Network Analysis, and it constitutes an important research field on all those areas where complex networks represent a powerful interpretation tool for describing and understanding systems involved in neuroscience, biology, social science, economy, and many others. A challenging approach to uncover the community structure in complex network, and then revealing the internal organization of nodes, is Modularity optimization. In this research paper, we present an immune optimization algorithm (opt-IA) developed to detect community structures, with the main aim to maximize the modularity produced by the discovered communities. In order to assess the performance of opt-IA, we compared it with an overall of 20 heuristics and metaheuristics, among which one Hyper-Heuristic method, using social and biological complex networks as data set. Unlike these algorithms, opt-IA is entirely based on a fully random search process, which in turn is combined with purely stochastic operators. According to the obtained outcomes, opt-IA shows strictly better performances than almost all heuristics and metaheuristics to which it was compared; whilst it turns out to be comparable with the Hyper-Heuristic method. Overall, it can be claimed that opt-IA, even if driven by a purely random process, proves to be reliable and with efficient performance. Furthermore, to prove the latter claim, a sensitivity analysis of the functionality was conducted, using the classic metrics NMI, ARI and NVI.

A Multi-label Propagation Algorithm for Community Detection Based on Average Mutual Information

Community structure is one of the vital characteristics of complex networks. How to effectively detect communities is a hot issue. From the perspective of information theory, the community structure of complex networks can be detected and revealed more accurately. This research introduces the average mutual information (AMI) into the detection process of the multi-label propagation algorithm (MLPA) and proposes a new community detection algorithm AMI-MLPA. The algorithm initially determines the propagation order according to the influence of nodes in the network. By selecting the label with stronger propagation intensity and smaller conditional entropy in the process of label propagation, a more reasonable community partition can be obtained. Experiments on real-world datasets and synthetic datasets show that the algorithm is better than FastGN, GN, and other LPA-based algorithms in general, with high accuracy of results on large-scale synthetic networks, which verifies the effectiveness of the algorithm.

Community detection via network node vector label propagation

The discovery and analysis of community structure in complex networks is a hot topic in recent years. A community detection method called NVP is proposed based on the node vector label propagation rate of network nodes. The algorithm determines the centers by looking for NGC nodes, use the concept that the inner product of the node vector in the approximate modularity is greater than 0 to divide the initial community, and then divides the final community according to the relevant content of the label propagation rate. Experimental results show that the algorithm can effectively identify the community structure of various real-world networks and computer-generated networks. In addition, this algorithm can also obtain higher NMI values than DPC, FG, LE and DCN algorithms.

An Effective Approach for Modular Community Detection in Bipartite Network Based on Integrating Rider with Harris Hawks Optimization Algorithms

The strenuous mining and arduous discovery of the concealed community structure in complex networks has received tremendous attention by the research community and is a trending domain in the multifaceted network as it not only reveals details about the hierarchical structure of multifaceted network but also assists in better understanding of the core functions of the network and subsequently information recommendation. The bipartite networks belong to the multifaceted network whose nodes can be divided into a dissimilar node-set so that no edges assist between the vertices. Even though the discovery of communities in one-mode network is briefly studied, community detection in bipartite networks is not studied. In this paper, we propose a novel Rider-Harris Hawks Optimization (RHHO) algorithm for community detection in a bipartite network through node similarity. The proposed RHHO is developed by the integration of the Rider Optimization (RO) algorithm with the Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) algorithm. Moreover, a new evaluation metric, i.e., h-Tversky Index (h-TI), is also proposed for computing node similarity and fitness is newly devised considering modularity. The goal of modularity is to quantify the goodness of a specific division of network to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed community detection. The quantitative assessment of the proposed approach, as well as thorough comparative evaluation, was meticulously conducted in terms of fitness and modularity over the citation networks datasets (cit-HepPh and cit-HepTh) and bipartite network datasets (Movie Lens 100 K and American Revolution datasets). The performance was analyzed for 250 iterations of the simulation experiments. Experimental results have shown that the proposed method demonstrated a maximal fitness of 0.74353 and maximal modularity of 0.77433, outperforming the state-of-the-art approaches, including h-index-based link prediction, such as Multiagent Genetic Algorithm (MAGA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Memetic Algorithm for Community Detection in Bipartite Networks (MATMCD-BN), and HHO.

Community detection in complex networks: From statistical foundations to data science applications

AbstractIdentifying and tracking community structures in complex networks are one of the cornerstones of network studies, spanning multiple disciplines, from statistics to machine learning to social sciences, and involving even a broader range of application areas, from biology to politics to blockchain. Multiobjective Brain Storm Optimization Community Detection Method Based on Novelty Search

A complex network is characterized by community structure, so it is of great theoretical and practical significance to discover hidden functions by detecting the community structure in complex networks. In this paper, a multiobjective brain storm optimization based on novelty search (MOBSO-NS) community detection method is proposed to solve the current issue of premature convergence caused by the loss of diversity in complex network community detection based on multiobjective optimization algorithm and improve the accuracy of community discovery. The proposed method designs a novel search strategy where novelty individuals are first constructed to improve the global search ability, thus avoiding falling into local optimal solutions; then, the objective space is divided into 3 clusters: elite cluster, ordinary cluster, and novel cluster, which are mapped to the decision space, and finally, the populations are disrupted and merged. In addition, the introduction of a restarting strategy is introduced to avoid stagnation by premature convergence. Experimental results show that the algorithm with good global searchability can find the Pareto optimal network community structure set with uniform distribution and high convergence and excavate the network community with higher quality.

An empirical characterization of community structures in complex networks using a bivariate map of quality metrics

Community detection emerges as an important task in the discovery of network mesoscopic structures. However, the concept of a “good” community is very context-dependent, and it is relatively complicated to deduce community characteristics using available community detection techniques. In reality, the existence of a gap between structural goodness quality metrics and expected topological patterns creates a confusion in evaluating community structures. We thus introduce an empirical multivariate analysis of different structural goodness properties in order to characterize several detectable community topologies. Specifically, we show that a combination of two representative structural dimensions including community transitivity and hub dominance allows to distinguish different topologies such as star-based, clique-based, string-based and grid-based structures. Additionally, these classes of topology disclose structural proximities with those of graphs created by Erdős–Renyi, Watts–Strogatz and Barabasi–Albert generative models. We illustrate popular community topologies identified by different detection methods on a large dataset composing many network categories and associate their structures with the most related graph generative model. Interestingly, this conjunctive representation sheds light on fundamental differences between mesoscopic structures in various network categories including communication, information, biological, technological, social, ecological, synthetic networks and more.

A novel algorithm for community detection based on resistance distance and similarity

Community detection is important for understanding the structure and function of networks. Resistance distance is a kind of distance function inherent in the network itself, which has important applications in many fields. In this paper, we propose a novel community detection algorithm based on resistance distance and similarity. First, we propose the node similarity, which is based on the common nodes and resistance distance. Then, we define the distance function between nodes by similarity. Furthermore, we calculate the distance between communities by using the distance between nodes. Finally, we detect the community structure in the network according to the nearest-neighbor nodes being in the same community. Experimental results on artificial networks and real-world networks show that the proposed algorithm can effectively detect the community structures in complex networks.

Parallel label propagation algorithm based on weight and random walk.

Community detection is a complex and meaningful process, which plays an important role in studying the characteristics of complex networks. In recent years, the discovery and analysis of community structures in complex networks has attracted the attention of many scholars, and many community discovery algorithms have been proposed. Many existing algorithms are only suitable for small-scale data, not for large-scale data, so it is necessary to establish a stable and efficient label propagation algorithm to deal with massive data and complex social networks. In this paper, we propose a novel label propagation algorithm, called WRWPLPA (Parallel Label Propagation Algorithm based on Weight and Random Walk). WRWPLPA proposes a new similarity calculation method combining weights and random walks. It uses weights and similarities to update labels in the process of label propagation, improving the accuracy and stability of community detection. First, weight is calculated by combining the neighborhood index and the position index, and the weight is used to distinguish the importance of the nodes in the network. Then, use random walk strategy to describe the similarity between nodes, and the label of nodes are updated by combining the weight and similarity. Finally, parallel propagation is comprehensively proposed to utilize label probability efficiently. Experiment results on artificial network datasets and real network datasets show that our algorithm has improved accuracy and stability compared with other label propagation algorithms.

Deep autoencoder-based community detection in complex networks with particle swarm optimization and continuation algorithms

Detecting communities is an important multidisciplinary research discipline and is considered vital to understand the structure of complex networks. Deep autoencoders have been successfully proposed to solve the problem of community detection. However, existing models in the literature are trained based on gradient descent optimization with the backpropagation algorithm, which is known to converge to local minima and prove inefficient, especially in big data scenarios. To tackle these drawbacks, this work proposed a novel deep autoencoder with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and continuation algorithms to reveal community structures in complex networks. The PSO and continuation algorithms were utilized to avoid the local minimum and premature convergence, and to reduce overall training execution time. Two objective functions were also employed in the proposed model: minimizing the cost function of the autoencoder, and maximizing the modularity function, which refers to the quality of the detected communities. This work also proposed other methods to work in the absence of continuation, and to enable premature convergence. Extensive empirical experiments on 11 publically-available real-world datasets demonstrated that the proposed method is effective and promising for deriving communities in complex networks, as well as outperforming state-of-the-art deep learning community detection algorithms.

Methods for detecting the community structure in complex networks have mainly focused on network topology, neglecting the rich content information often associated with nodes. In the last few years, the compositional dimension contained in many real-world networks has been recognized fundamental to find network divisions which better reflect group organization. In this paper, we propose a multiobjective genetic framework which integrates the topological and compositional dimensions to uncover community structure in attributed networks. The approach allows to experiment different structural measures to search for densely connected communities, and similarity measures between attributes to obtain high intracommunity feature homogeneity. An efficient and efficacious post-processing local merge procedure enables the generation of high quality solutions, as confirmed by the experimental results on both synthetic and real-world networks, and the comparison with several state-of-the-art methods.

An improved limited random walk approach for identification of overlapping communities in complex networks

Detection of community structures in complex networks provides an effective tool for studying the relationships between nodes and revealing the hidden structures. In many real applications, the communities overlap, which means that the nodes can belong to different communities. Recently, random walk methods have been successfully applied for identification of overlapping communities in social networks. However, most of the existing random-walk-based methods require information on the entire network, which is difficult to obtain. Moreover, most networks have gained very large scales with the rapid development of Internet technologies, and it is impractical to scale the existing works for online social networks. Another issue concerning the existing methods is the need for information on the number of communities before the algorithm begins, which is impossible to meet for most real-world networks. To resolve the above issues, a random walk method is proposed in this paper for detection of overlapping community structures in complex networks. The proposed method employs the Markov transition matrix to calculate the transferability of the agent from one node to the others. These probabilities are then used as an attribute vector and feature set for each node, and the feature sets are used for identification of initial communities. Nodes that are available in the feature sets of more than one community, or exhibit high ratios of neighborhood with the other communities are identified as overlapping nodes. The proposed method is examined on various real-world and synthetic datasets. The results reported in terms of various evaluation metrics demonstrate its high efficiency as compared to the existing works.
