It is well known that lexicography, this fertile ground for scientific research, owes a lot to English researchers. This is confirmed by a historical reference pointing to a specific time period (sixteenth century) when the first reference books started to appear in England, which was ahead of the rest of Europe in this aspect. In spite of this, English lexicography has become pivotal in this matter, it is clear that it has not developed the science of lexicography autonomously. For instance, Scottish lexicographers have introduced authentic and separate dictionary directions, such as glossaries of difficult and obscure Scottish words. The collective monograph Scottish in Definition. A History of Scottish Dictionaries. published in Edinburgh in 2012 and edited by I. McLeod and J. Derrick McClure was an inspiration to correct the situation. The preconditions for the emergence and continued existence of variant national lexicographies have been considered by science for many centuries. During the course of this continuous work a great number of patterns and tendencies have been described accompanying the birth of the lexicography of a particular state, and there is no doubt that all these cases were made possible only by the release of a comprehensive explanatory dictionary, responsible for the description of one particular language. Scottish lexicography plays a prominent role in recent research, as the issue of national identity is particularly relevant at present. The objective of this paper is to address the problems of authenticity of Scottish lexicography within the language system using methods of classifying the evolution stages of Scottish lexicography along with lexicographic analysis of modern Scottish dictionaries. The undertaken research shows that Scottish lexicography is a real phenomenon in British lexicography.

The article is a detailed review of a collective monograph published in honor of W.Sadurski, a prominent Australian legal scholar of Polish origin. It illuminates the most important problems of concern today to the international legal community. In particular, it is about the coming to power in a number of EU countries of right-wing populists who demonstratively disregard liberal values and tolerant rhetoric; the problems of the EU’s existence within its current borders, aggravated after the UK’s secession from the Union; and the phenomenon of “illiberal democracy” as one of the most dangerous challenges facing the constitutional development of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, especially Hungary and Poland. Special attention is paid to democratic backsliding, seen in the steady decline in rankings of post-socialist countries in various ratings of democratic accountability. The paper draws a conclusion about the general crisis that democratic statehood is experiencing on the European continent today and which is perhaps the most serious since the late 1930s. Also addressed is the broader use of various forms of direct democracy, beginning with nationwide and local referendums and ending with various types of plebiscites on confidence. A relatively new form of popular governance has been introduced by deliberative (consultative) democracy, for example in the case of Ireland’s Citizens’ Assembly, which is chosen by random selection and as vox populi gives parliamentary committees recommendations on the most acute and divisive social problems. The volume also illuminates rightist governments’ social-economic policies repudiating the 1990s’ widely accepted concept of the market’s invisible hand and relying on direct payments to the population (as in Poland’s “500+” program, Covid payments, and so on). The Polish case is separately examined, particularly in the context of the so-called ‘war’ with the Constitutional tribunal.

The article reviews a collective monograph of the scholars of the Institute of History of Ukraine at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine that comprehensively clarifies the historical origins of the concept of «Russian world», as well as its application as a political technology and tool of aggression. The study is characterized by a thorough and diverse source base. The authors presented a multifaceted analysis of the theory and practice of the «Russian world» concept, which should be the basis for the deconstruction of one of the most destructive ideologies of our time.

Historical Cognition and Cognitive Sciences: New in Russian Historiography

The article presents an analytical review of the recent literature on cognitive history, especially the Russian collective monograph “Cognitive Sciences and Historical Cognition”, published in 2020. It traces the patterns typical for interdisciplinary research not only within the humanitarian disciplines, but also at the “borders” between the humanities and the “natural sciences”. The article highlights the paradoxical and productive nature of the “mutual interventions” of cognitive science and the humanities, which contribute to overcoming “atomism” both within the humanities and at the “frontier” between them and the natural science disciplines.

The article is a review of the collective monograph "Thanatological Theme in Russian Literature of the 11th-21th centuries", prepared by well-known experts in the field of Russian literature V.A. Voropaev, I.V. Dergacheva, E.L. Konyavskaya and V.V. Milkov. The peer-reviewed book publishes the results of a comprehensive study of ideas about death and posthumous life based on data from Old Russian written monuments and the most significant works of Russian fiction of the 18th-21th centuries. According to the authors of the book, the basis of literary thanatology in Russian culture was the Christian doctrine. But it also absorbed elements of autochthonous pre-Christian views on the afterlife and external impulses that came in the process of intercultural communication with Byzantium and the countries of Europe.

This review characterises the content and comments on the importance of a collective monograph which can be regarded as the first comprehensive work in the Russian historical science to depict the dynamics of political culture and the stages of party building by almost all the peoples of the multinational Habsburg monarchy in 1848–1914. In a series of essays, the authors demonstrate how Habsburg peoples fought, though with a varying degree of ardour and success, for the recognition of their collective identity and claimed to be recognised as collective subjects of the state. The review reveals the main issues that thwart drawing a comprehensive review of the political culture of the peoples of the monarchy resulting from the composite state structure, the nature of political associations and parties, and the different development stages of the national idea. The authors revise the teleological approach of 20th-century historiography which can be considered a novelty in the Central European studies in Russia. Yet, the book contains occasional weaknesses in the chains of reasoning and evidence. Nonetheless, the strengths of the book make it possible to rank it among the authoritative books on the Central European history of the modern period.

Media Aggression and Political Discourse

The review covers the collective monograph “Communicative Aggressions of the 21st Century” dedicated to the study of destructive manifestations of communicative aggression in the media sphere connected with functional specifics of the contemporary information technologies and, in particular, of Internet. The review deals with the contents of the book and its structure, evaluates the understanding by the authors of communicative aggression, its features and destructive consequences. Special emphasis is laid upon the growing aggressiveness of the political discourse as the Internet becomes more widespread and commonly available. It was concluded that in order to find tools to reduce communicative aggression in the media sphere, the authors should consider and assess the developing censorship practices of Internet communications.

Behind the Facades of Anniversaries

The article is devoted to the collective monograph “War, Politics, Memory: The Napoleonic Wars and World War I in the Space of Anniversaries”. Prepared by a large team of academics under the leadership of Olga Porshneva, Nikolai Baranov, and Vladimir Zemtsov (professors at Ural Federal University), it is the first generalizing work dedicated to historical memory and the politics of memory surrounding these wars. The monograph uses a large complex of documents from archives in Russia, France, Great Britain and Germany. This book is distinguished by its high theoretical level, which is supported by concepts from leading specialists on historical memory. The authors characterise the specifics of commemorative practices connected with events that were major milestones in the history of the ‘long’ nineteenth century. The monograph shows the evolution of these practices, which was conditioned by changes in the attitudes of society and the authorities towards the Napoleonic Wars and the First World War. The authors characterise the role of the institutions of civil society in the formation and development of cultural practices connected with the anniversaries of these military conflicts. Most attention is paid to the specifics of commemorative practices related to ‘victory memories’ and ‘defeat memories’ in various European countries. This book helps us to understand the contradictory character of state policies towards historical memory, a relevant issue in modern Russia.

Витальность искусства: подходы к исследованию

Throughout the centuries, the concept of the vitality of art has been commensurate with the concept of “elevated life”, with the feeling of a special upsurge at the moment of artistic experience, and was seen as a condition for gaining new energy. Today, the high amplitude of the implementation of artistic drama, the acutely presented tragic, undermines the possibili- ties of artistic catharsis. When the art form is shattered by deliberate alogisms, conscious modeling of chaos, attention is sharpened to the in-depth development of the phenomenon of art vitality. The scientific review analyzes the main ideas of the discussion that took place in October 2020 at the State Institute for Art Studies. Being a specialist in aesthetics, Oleg A. Krivtsun has been developing aspects of the phenome- non of art vitality for several years. At a certain stage, other modern researchers, who share an interest in this phenomenon, joined the work on this topic. The discussion on the vitality of art was held at the State Institute for Art Studies and brought together scientists of various specialties from humanitarian universities and research institutions of Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Nizhny Novgorod. The unifying basis of the ‘round table’ was the desire of art historians, musicologists, culturologists, architects, and aestheticians to create a generalizing study devoted to the nature of the vitality of art. The reports of the ‘round table’, given in abridg- ment, are presented in this section as the first collective publication that promotes the writing of a collective monograph.

The reader is invited to the review of the IMEMO RAS collective monograph «Political processes in the post-Soviet space: new trends and old problems» (ed. by E.G. Solovyev and G.I. Chufrin. Moscow, 2020). The review notes the scientific relevance and practical significance of the monograph for modern science and foreign policy activities of modern Russia, as well as identifies most acute problems of new sovereign countries’ functioning after the collapse of the USSR. As a result, it is concluded that dynamics of the ongoing political and economic processes in the post-Soviet space, destabilization of the situation along the perimeter of Russia’s borders requires increased attention of the Russian political, economic, scientific, and cultural elites to the situation in the neighboring countries.

The article gives an extensive review of the collective monograph of three doctors of sci­ences who focused on the problem of the functioning of the cultural mechanism of collec­tive memory in the era of “post-truth”. The subject of the study identifies three levels: factual, revealing the process of rewriting and falsifying history; political, considering the specifics of conducting a modern information war against Russia, in which “wars of memory” represent one of the directions of political confrontation; conceptual, defin­ing various strategies for Russia’s exit from the crisis of post-Soviet identity. The review pays particular attention to the discussion at the conceptual level in substantiating the concepts of “state-civilization” and “state-nation” on the issues of understanding the place and meaning of “Russian identity” and “historical truth” in solving the problem of Russia’s exit from the crisis of post-Soviet identity.

A comprehensive look at the "new old" security issues "on the other side of the Pyrenees"

The collective monograph reveals issues related to the evolution of strategic thought in Europe, starting with the Renaissance. Particular attention is paid to its origin in Spain during the Golden Age (XVI-XVII) and its development to the present day. The authors thoroughly study modern trends in the field of international relations and international security, and also share the peculiarities of the adaptation of the Iberian country to the new challenges of the 21st century within NATO.

The review provides an outline of the collective monograph The Philosophy of Rhythm: Aesthetics, Music, Poetics, edited by Peter Cheyne, Andy Hamilton and Max Paddison, published by Oxford University Press, 2019. Concept of rhythm is analysed from different perspectives—philosophical, musicological and psychological. It considers a multidisciplinary approach and also includes both analytic and continental philosophical traditions. Rhythm is viewed as a pulse that is going through various metric structures including particular pieces of music, paintings, examples of poetry and philosophy. Twenty eight authors from the entire world discuss rhythm and specify definitions of rhythm. They try to give answers on crucial questions uniting experienced rhythm in philosophy and arts, thus giving an important contribution to rhythm studies. The book is organised thematically and based on different aspects of rhythm manifestations. The main questions of the research are as follows: How is rhythm experienced? Does rhythm necessarily involve movement? Why rhythm is so deeply rooted in human? How can static configurations be rhythmic? How does a rhythmic structure change from a stable pattern to a flexible texture? All these questions concern two interwoven issues common for the volume in general: immanence of rhythm to arts and human experience of it.

Reflecting on What I Have Read: Civilizational Challenges in the World Historical Perspective

The article is a review of the collective monograph “Civilizational challenges in the world historical perspective”. The author addresses four scientific discussions presented in the sections of the book and devoted to the challenges of globalization, modernization, migration and barbarism. It is shown that using a transnational perspective and relying on theoretical innovations in the study and reconstruction of civilizations, the authors of the monograph reveal the mechanisms of generating various civilizational challenges and the results of their contradictory effect on individual local civilizations and the world-historical process as a whole. Considering modern challenges in a multilevel perspective, which allows finding the contours of the linking macro- and micro-historical analysis, in different geographical and temporal environments simultaneously in synchronous and diachronic sections, allows, according to the reviewer, to deepen the understanding of the specificity of individual civilizations, ways of their interaction as well as the current era of globalization.

Criticism of the media language: Questions for discussion

The article is devoted to one of the four directions of modern media linguistics — criticism of the media language (CM). The main prerequisites for the design of CM are the logic of the development of modern linguistics, which demonstrates a steady increase in attention to the communicative capabilities of the language realized in different discursive spaces, the movement of active language processes into the media space and the resulting conflict between the traditional idea of speech culture and the new requirements for the effective use of language resources. The author draws attention to the solution of many installation issues that are recorded in the dictionary-directory Medialinguistics (2018). The uniqueness of the research field of the Kyrgyz Republic is presented in the collective monograph Media Linguistics of the Slavic Countries (2020), which is a milestone for Slavic media studies. But the goal of the author of this article is to identify the discussion areas that have already been identified in the relevant research field. The author attempts to present topical, debatable, issues focusing on the previously stated criteria for evaluating media speech: effectiveness, correctness, ethics, aesthetics. The key findings are as follows: 1) the normative concept of media speech is formed in the process of dialogic interaction between the competent professional community “processing the language” and philologists who are able to comprehend the results of this “processing” on the basis of a detailed analysis of the speech situation in the mass media; 2) the most important task of CM is related to the satisfaction “the need for generally understandable, correct language”, which corresponds to the establishment and preservation of national unity and “political and economic integrity of the state” (the idea of N. I. Tolstoy); 3) the most indisputable when recognizing several controversial moments are the criteria for the effectiveness and correctness of the media speech; 4) one of the most serious debatable issues arises in the area of ethical and aesthetic reflection of criticism related to the verbal representation of the comic category in Russian mass media.

The author reviewed the collective monograph «Higher education in Ukraine in the context of civilizational changes and challenges: state, problems, prospects for development». It is noted that the author’s team managed to draw the main idea: Ukraine has the staff, resources, opportunities to adequately, decently, professionally respond to the challenges of civilization and offer its own, nationally oriented trajectory of modernization of the education system to train competitive professionals. It is concluded that the peer-reviewed monograph is multifaceted, encourages further research, determines the activation of creative thinking of its readers.
