Training and evaluation of robot-based psychological intervention program for preventing child sexual abuse

Background and purposePreventing child sexual abuse is a health and medical priority in many countries. The risk of sexual abuse can be markedly reduced through education, awareness, and skill-building for children. The purpose of this study was to train and evaluate a robot-based psychological intervention program for preventing child sexual abuse. MethodsThis study had a semiexperimental design that included pre- and posttests as well as a control group. A stratified random sample of 80 individuals was drawn from the population of eight-to ten-year-old children in Ghaen, Iran, in 2018. Subsequently, the sample was randomly divided into two experimental groups and two control groups. The experimental group participated in a robot-based psychological intervention program, for a total of 10 sessions. The control group received no intervention. The tool used to measure children's knowledge and awareness of sexual abuse was a custom-designed questionnaire developed by Tahan (Tahan, 2023). Participants completed the questionnaire in the pretest, posttest, and follow-up stages. The collected data were analyzed using repeated measures ANCOVA in SPSS (v.25). ResultsThe findings demonstrated that educating children about sexual abuse was effective in enhancing their knowledge of appropriate and inappropriate touching (p < 0.01). Furthermore, the robot-based cognitive-behavioral intervention program for the prevention of child sexual abuse was effective (p < 0.01). ConclusionThe psychological intervention program increased children's knowledge and awareness concerning the prevention of sexual abuse and associated coping skills. Furthermore, psychological intervention programs were effective in preventing child sexual abuse.

A retrospective analysis of the prevalence and impact of associated comorbidities on fibromyalgia outcomes in a tertiary care center.

This retrospective study was designed to analyze the prevalence and impact of associated comorbidities on fibromyalgia (FM) outcomes (functionality, pain, depression levels) for patients who participated in an intensive multicomponent clinical program in a tertiary care center. Participants included a sample of 411 patients diagnosed with FM at a large tertiary medical center using the 2016 ACR criteria. Patients completed an intensive 2-day cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) program, filled out the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire Revised (FIQR), the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), and were followed for 6 months after treatment completion. T-tests were performed to analyze differences between the presence or absence of select comorbidities for the three outcomes at follow-up. Statistically significant comorbidities (p < 0.05) were used as predictors in multivariable logistic regression models. The FM associated comorbidities in this cohort that had significant impact on the measured outcome domains after treatment program completed were Obesity (FIQR p = 0.024), Hypothyroidism (CES-D p = 0.023, PCS p = 0.035), Gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD (PCS p < 0.001), Osteoarthritis (CES-D p = 0.047). Interestingly, Headache, the most frequent FM associated comorbidity in this cohort (33.6%), did not have a significant impact on the outcome domains at follow-up. Obesity (18.2%) was the only FM associated comorbidity significantly impacting all three outcome domains at follow-up. The present study suggests that addressing obesity may significantly impact outcomes in FM patients.

Therapist-assisted online psychological therapies differing in trauma focus for post-traumatic stress disorder (STOP-PTSD): a UK-based, single-blind, randomised controlled trial

Many patients are currently unable to access psychological treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and it is unclear which types of therapist-assisted internet-based treatments work best. We aimed to investigate whether a novel internet-delivered cognitive therapy for PTSD (iCT-PTSD), which implements all procedures of a first-line, trauma-focused intervention recommended by the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for PTSD, is superior to internet-delivered stress management therapy for PTSD (iStress-PTSD), a comprehensive cognitive behavioural treatment programme focusing on a wide range of coping skills. We did a single-blind, randomised controlled trial in three locations in the UK. Participants (≥18 years) were recruited from UK National Health Service (NHS) Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) services or by self-referral and met DSM-5 criteria for PTSD to single or multiple events. Participants were randomly allocated by a computer programme (3:3:1) to iCT-PTSD, iStress-PTSD, or a 3-month waiting list with usual NHS care, after which patients who still met PTSD criteria were randomly allocated (1:1) to iCT-PTSD or iStress-PTSD. Randomisation was stratified by location, duration of PTSD (<18 months or ≥18 months), and severity of PTSD symptoms (high vs low). iCT-PTSD and iStress-PTSD were delivered online with therapist support by messages and short weekly phone calls over the first 12 weeks (weekly treatment phase), and three phone calls over the next 3 months (booster phase). The primary outcome was the severity of PTSD symptoms at 13 weeks after random assignment, measured by self-report on the PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), and analysed by intention-to-treat. Safety was assessed in all participants who started treatment. Process analyses investigated acceptability and compliance with treatment, and candidate moderators and mediators of outcome. The trial was prospectively registered with the ISRCTN registry, ISRCTN16806208. Of the 217 participants, 158 (73%) self-reported as female, 57 (26%) as male, and two (1%) as other; 170 (78%) were White British, 20 (9%) were other White, six (3%) were Asian, ten (5%) were Black, eight (4%) had a mixed ethnic background, and three (1%) had other ethnic backgrounds. Mean age was 36·36 years (SD 12·11; range 18-71 years). 52 (24%) participants met self-reported criteria for ICD-11 complex PTSD. Fewer than 10% of participants dropped out of each treatment group. iCT-PTSD was superior to iStress-PTSD in reducing PTSD symptoms, showing an adjusted difference on the PCL-5 of -4·92 (95% CI -8·92 to -0·92; p=0·016; standardised effect size d=0·38 [0·07 to 0·69]) for immediate allocations and -5·82 (-9·59 to -2·04; p=0·0027; d=0·44 [0·15 to 0·72]) for all treatment allocations. Both treatments were superior to the waiting list for PCL-5 at 13 weeks (d=1·67 [1·23 to 2·10] for iCT-PTSD and 1·29 [0·85 to 1·72] for iStress-PTSD). The advantages in outcome for iCT-PTSD were greater for participants with high dissociation or complex PTSD symptoms, and mediation analyses showed both treatments worked by changing negative meanings of the trauma, unhelpful coping, and flashback memories. No serious adverse events were reported. Trauma-focused iCT-PTSD is effective and acceptable to patients with PTSD, and superior to a non-trauma-focused cognitive behavioural stress management therapy, suggesting that iCT-PTSD is an effective way of delivering the contents of CT-PTSD, one of the NICE-recommended first-line treatments for PTSD, while reducing therapist time compared with face-to-face therapy. Adventure-Based Cognitive Behavioral Intervention for Hong Kong University Students: A Randomized Controlled Study

Purpose: This study developed and evaluated an adventure-based cognitive behavioral intervention (aCBI) program to respond to the higher education mental health crisis in Hong Kong. Methods: The aCBI program was delivered in the form of a 13-week general education (GE) course and was evaluated at pre-, post-, and 3-month follow-up. A total of 544 undergraduate students who experienced psychological distress were randomized to either the aCBI group (n = 197) or the wait-list control group (WLC) (n = 347). Results: Compared with their WLC counterparts, the aCBI participants showed significantly stronger improvements in psychological distress, perceived stress, positive and negative emotions, and resilience at the posttest and 3-month follow-up. Positive and negative thoughts and sense-making coping partially mediated the treatment effects of aCBI. Conclusions: The aCBI program shows promise for inclusion in higher education curriculums to bridge the mental health service gaps for Chinese university students.

I-TREAT: Internet-based Cognitive Behavioral Treatment for Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED) in Danish Adolescents and Adults – Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial

IntroductionEating disorders severely impair psychosocial functioning, physical health, and quality of life. In particular, Anorexia Nervosa has the highest mortality rate among all psychiatric diseases. Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders have the highest lifetime prevalence with weighted means of 7.64% for women. Eating disorders are considered hard-to-treat, and studies have indicated that people suffering from eating disorders prefer low-threshold interventions compared to traditional mental health care. International studies show promising results of internet-based interventions for Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders.ObjectivesTo test the effectiveness of an internet-based psychologist-guided cognitive behavioral treatment program (I-TREAT) to reduce eating disorder symptoms in Danish adolescents and adults with Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders.MethodsThis study is a randomized controlled trial with two arms: 1) an intervention group and 2) an active control group. Participants are adolescents from the age of 15 or above, as well as adults, diagnosed with Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders. The intervention group receives the I-TREAT program while the control group receives self-guided mindfulness exercises. I-TREAT comprises 12 text-based treatment sessions with psychoeducation and treatment-related tasks, based on cognitive behavioral therapy and elements of compassion-focused therapy. The treatment duration is approximately 12 to 36 weeks. Videos, pictures, and animations support the treatment content and the program is accessible by web-browser and app. A specialist in eating disorders guides the patient through treatment with task-related feedback and asynchronous written communication. Patients will answer questionnaires regarding eating disorder symptoms, quality of life, and motivational states before, during, and after treatment, with follow-up measures at 3, 6, and 12 months. We expect to include 63 patients to each group and commence recruitment in August 2023. Preliminary results from a feasibility study on I-TREAT show good evaluations from clinicians and patients (N=30).ResultsNo results have yet been obtained. The results will be submitted to international scientific journals and presented at conferences.ConclusionsThe internet-based cognitive behavioral treatment program I-TREAT may be a promising tool for effectively treating adolescents and adults with Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders in Denmark.Disclosure of InterestNone Declared

The effectiveness of schema therapy with cognitive behavioral therapy on self-efficacy and quality of life in women with MS

Aim: According to people with MS, they have low quality of life and low self-efficacy. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating self-efficacy and quality of life in women with MS. Methods: The current research was of applied purpose and in terms of methodology, it was quasi-experimental with a pre-test-post-test design, a control group and a two-month follow-up. The statistical population of the study included all women suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) in Kermanshah during 2019-2020, who had referred to the Imam Reza Educational-Therapeutic Center. Using available and targeted sampling, 45 people were selected and randomly assigned to three groups (schema therapy = experimental group 1; cognitive behavioral therapy =experiment group 2 and control group). The data collection tool included the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (1996) and Scherer and Maddox Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (1982). After determining and randomly placing the experimental and control groups, therapeutic interventions were applied to the experimental groups in the form of two sessions per week, each session lasting 1.5 hours. A week after the completion of the treatment sessions, the experimental and control groups were subjected to a post-test. Statistical analysis of data was done with SPSS version 25 software. Results: Data analysis using Variance analysis of repeated measures showed: Schema therapy and cognitive-behavioral therapy had a significant effect on the quality of life (F = 219.49, P = 0.001) and self-efficacy (F = 21.929, P = 0.001) of the research sample. Moreover, the significance of Bonferroni's post hoc test indicated the stability of the effects of both treatments. Conclusion: According to the results, it is suggested to the health policy makers to take cognitive-behavioral treatment measures and programs to improve the quality of life and self-efficacy of women with MS.

OVERCOMING FEAR AVOIDANCE BEHAVIORS AND KINESIOPHOBIA IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC LOW BACK PAIN

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a very complex medical, social and economic problem. Long duration and variability of symptoms can be frustrating for patients and lead to various psychological and behavioral changes, which can be expressed as an over-powering fear of movement and lead to avoidance behavior. The aim of this study was to highlight the importance of individually designed exercises (IDE) and cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) in the treatment of patients with CLBP who have signs of fear-avoidance behavior and kinesiophobia. One hundred and thirty patients were included in a prospective randomized study. Group 1 (G1; n = 35) had a combined IDE and CBT program. Group 2 (G2; n = 35) had IDE, without CBT. Group 3 (G3; n = 30) had standard group exercises for CLBP. Group 4 (G4; n = 30) was a control, patients did not have IDE or CBT. Waddel's Fear Avoidance Beliefs Questionnaire (FABQ) and Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia (TSK), were used for monitoring and evaluation. Patients completed them at the beginning, at the end of the therapy, and also after 3 months. After therapy and three months later, a statistically significant reduction in symptoms in G1 and G2 was recorded, with better results in G1: FABQph = 4.77±3.83/5.51±4.02; FABQw = 2.31±3.69/2.94±4.19; TSK = 5.63±4.56/5.69 ± 4.55. (p &lt;0.001). The combination of IDE and CBT is an effective therapy for CLBP patients with fear avoidance behaviour and kinesiophobia.

Systems training for emotional predictability and problem solving in older adults with personality disorders: a pilot study.

Systems Training for Emotional Predictability and Problem Solving (STEPPS) is a cognitive behavioural therapy-based group treatment programme for patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). STEPPS has demonstrated its effectiveness for (younger) adults. However, there are no studies into the effects of STEPPS for older adults. The aim was to explore the outcome of STEPPS in older adults with personality disorders. In this naturalistic pre- vs post-treatment study, older patients with a personality disorder, reporting emotion regulation difficulties, were included. The primary outcome was BPD symptoms. Secondary outcomes included psychological distress and maladaptive personality functioning. Twenty-four patients, with a mean age of 63.9 years (SD=4.6), completed the 19-week programme. Nine patients (23.1%) did not complete the treatment. There were no significant differences in age, gender or global severity between completers and patients dropping out. There was a significant pre- vs post-treatment decrease of BPD symptoms, with a large effect size (Cohen's d=1.577). Self-control improved significantly and demonstrated a large effect size (r=.576). Furthermore, identity integration improved significantly, with a medium effect size (Cohen's d=.509). No significant differences were reported for most domains of psychological distress and maladaptive interpersonal personality functioning. The findings in this pilot study suggest STEPPS is a feasible treatment programme for older adults with personality disorders and emotion regulation difficulties. Adaptations to the program, for a better fit for older adults, however, might be needed.

Psychological factors predicting self-reported and observed aggression in male forensic psychiatric inpatients

The present study examined the psychological determinants of self-reported and observed aggression in male violent forensic psychiatric inpatients. Baseline data came from 232 inpatients referred to a cognitive–behavioral treatment program. Linear regression models were used to assess the relationship between the patients’ psychological characteristics and aggressive behavior. Self-reported aggression was studied with cross-sectional data, while the inpatients’ observed aggression in the ward was investigated with prospective data. The main factors contributing to the prediction of self-reported aggression were state anger, antisocial lifestyle and agreeableness, while the main factors contributing to the prediction of observed aggression were trait anger and agreeableness. The findings support the focus of treatment programs for forensic psychiatric inpatients on anger management.

Application of computerized cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with persistent postural-perceptual dizziness

Objective:A computerized cognitive behavioral therapy intervention program was constructed for patients with persistent postural-perception dizziness（PPPD） and its effects on dizziness symptoms, negative emotions and balance function were investigated. Methods:A randomized controlled trial design was used to select 86 patients with PPPD who were seen in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, First Hospital of Shanxi Medical University from July 2020 to July 2021. Randomly assigned to the control group（43 patients） and the experimental group（43 patients）. The control group was routinely treated with medication and vestibular rehabilitation, while the experimental group underwent computerized cognitive behavioral therapy for a total of 9 sessions over 8 weeks; their dizziness symptoms（DHI）, negative affect（GAD-7, PHQ-9） and balance function（BBS） were compared at baseline, 4 and 8 weeks later. Results:After 4 and 8 weeks of intervention, the improvement of dizziness symptoms and negative mood in both groups had a between-group effect, time effect, and interaction effect（P<0.05）. The improvement of balance function had only a time effect and interaction effect（P<0.05）, and no difference in between-group effect was seen（P>0.05）. Conclusion:Computerized cognitive behavioral therapy can be used as an adjunctive treatment to alleviate patients' dizziness, negative affect, and balance function, but no additional benefit has been seen in terms of balance function improvement.

Efficacy of a treatment program based on positive psychology for drug use in juvenile offenders.

One of the factors that increase the likelihood of adolescents starting to exhibit and consolidate anti-social behavior is drug use, with a consistent pattern of consumption of different substance found in young offenders (Aebi, Bessler & Steinhausen, 2021). A cognitive-behavioral group treatment program inspired by the positive psychology approach was developed and applied to drug use in minors deprived of liberty (experimental group); the results were compared to those of a group of adolescents with the same type of drug use in the same center (active control group) at two points in time: during and after incarceration. The fall in the rate of problems associated with drug use after incarceration in the experimental group was statistically significant compared to the control group, and the effect size of the experimental condition was large (ῆ^2 = 0.55), much higher than the control group (ῆ^2 = 0.16). The treatment program has proven to be an effective tool for reducing problems associated with drug use and is especially effective in reducing alcohol and cannabis consumption.

Development of the motivational thought frequency scale for alcohol abstinence (MTF-A).

For most treatment-seeking patients with severe Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), abstinence is the clinically indicated goal. Existing AUD motivation scales are non-specific about treatment consumption goals, which limit their effectiveness. Desires and mental imagery are relevant in the motivation for AUD treatment engagement. The Motivational Thought Frequency Scale for an abstinence goal (MTF-A) was adapted from the MTF for controlled drinking (MTF-CD). This study psychometrically evaluated the MTF-A in an alcohol-dependent sample engaged in treatment with a goal of abstinence. To enhance the clinical utility of the scale, a secondary aim was to evaluate a psychometrically equivalent short version of the MTF-A. A sample N of 329 treatment-seeking patients with AUD (mean age of 44.44 years, SD=11.89 years, 72% male) who were undertaking a cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) program for abstinence completed the Motivational Thought Frequency Scale for Abstinence (MTF-A) and the Severity of Alcohol Dependence Questionnaire (SADQ). The MTF-A measured motivation for abstinence through four factors: intensity, self-efficacy imagery, incentives imagery, and availability. Confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) were conducted to examine factor structure and model fit. Cronbach's alpha assessed internal consistency. Predictive validity was determined by logistic regression predicting first-session treatment non-attendance and alcohol consumption between baseline assessment andcommencement of treatment, controlling for potential confounds. A four-factor structure provided the best fit for the MTF-A, compared with one- and three-factor models. A shortened 9-item MTF-A scale (S-MTF-A) provided better fit than the 13-item MTF-A scale. Both MTF-A and S-MTF-A displayed good internal consistency. Although both MTF-A and S-MTF-A successfully predicted first-session treatment non-attendance, neither predicted alcohol consumption between the baseline assessment and commencement of treatment. The model fit of the four-factor, 9-item S-MTF-A was superior to the original 13-item MTF-A. Both scales were predictive of participation of AUD treatment. Desires and mental imagery play an important role in AUD treatment motivation.

“The Broker of Reality”: A Scoping Review of Moral Reconation Therapy

ABSTRACT Purpose This scoping review aims to identify the evidence-based literature supporting Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), a cognitive-behavioral treatment program created in 1987 and implemented in correctional-treatment settings across the US. Social work students and practitioners are among MRT’s facilitators. Method We analyze the reliability and validity of the most recent meta-analysis of MRT, covering studies published between 1988 and 2010. We then identify 669 potential publications on MRT published between 2011 and 2021. Results Our search across Google Scholar and eleven academic databases yielded zero peer-reviewed studies on MRT’s effectiveness or outcomes. Discussion We explore themes that emerged from the exclusion criteria to describe how MRT’s evidence claims are not supported by peer-reviewed research. Social workers should be prepared to assess the reliability, quality, and rigor of evidence supporting the interventions they use. This review offers interesting challenges and learning opportunities for social work students learning about social work research.

Many individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) also meet criteria for additional diagnoses. Among the most common co-occurring diagnoses are mood disorders-especially depression. This article focuses on the comorbidity between OCD and major depression. After discussing nature of OCD and depression, the rates and clinical impact of depression on OCD, the conceptualization, assessment, and treatment of OCD when it appears along with depression is covered in detail. The derivation and implementation of a cognitive behavioral treatment program specifically for depressed OCD patients is described and illustrated using a case example.

P21-15 Feasibility of a nurse-initiated CBI program for symptom clusters in advanced NSCLC patients - a qualitative study

Patients with advanced non-small cell treatment concurrently experienced a variety of symptoms, forming symptom clusters, affecting their quality of life(QOL). We developed a Symptom Cluster Reduction Life Support Program (Support program) to reduce the burden on advanced NSCLC patients based on a nurse-initiated Cognitive Behavioral Intervention (CBI), and evaluated the feasibility of the program.

Development and Evaluation of the Usefulness, Usability, and Feasibility of iNNOV Breast Cancer: Mixed Methods Study.

BackgroundDespite the efficacy of psychosocial interventions in minimizing psychosocial morbidity in breast cancer survivors (BCSs), intervention delivery across survivorship is limited by physical, organizational, and attitudinal barriers, which contribute to a mental health care treatment gap in cancer settings.ObjectiveThe aim of this study is to develop iNNOV Breast Cancer (iNNOVBC), a guided, internet-delivered, individually tailored, acceptance and commitment therapy–influenced cognitive behavioral intervention program aiming to treat mild to moderate anxiety and depression in BCSs as well as to improve fatigue, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, and health-related quality of life in this group. This study also aims to evaluate the usefulness, usability, and preliminary feasibility of iNNOVBC.MethodsiNNOVBC was developed using a user-centered design approach involving its primary and secondary end users, that is, BCSs (11/24, 46%) and mental health professionals (13/24, 54%). We used mixed methods, namely in-depth semistructured interviews, laboratory-based usability tests, short-term field trials, and surveys, to assess iNNOVBC’s usefulness, usability, and preliminary feasibility among these target users. Descriptive statistics were used to characterize the study sample, evaluate performance data, and assess survey responses. Qualitative data were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and thematically analyzed.ResultsOverall, participants considered iNNOVBC highly useful, with most participants reporting on the pertinence of its scope, the digital format, the relevant content, and the appropriate features. However, various usability issues were identified, and participants suggested that the program should be refined by simplifying navigation paths, using a more dynamic color scheme, including more icons and images, displaying information in different formats and versions, and developing smartphone and tablet versions. In addition, participants suggested that tables should be converted into plain textboxes and data visualization dashboards should be included to facilitate the tracking of progress. The possibility of using iNNOVBC in a flexible manner, tailoring it according to BCSs’ changing needs and along the cancer care continuum, was another suggestion that was identified.ConclusionsThe study results suggest that iNNOVBC is considered useful by both BCSs and mental health professionals, configuring a promising point-of-need solution to bridge the psychological supportive care gap experienced by BCSs across the survivorship trajectory. We believe that our results may be applicable to other similar programs. However, to fulfill their full supportive role, such programs should be comprehensive, highly usable, and tailorable and must adopt a flexible yet integrated structure capable of evolving in accordance with survivors’ changing needs and the cancer continuum.

Cognitive behavioral intervention in dealing with Internet addiction among Arab teenagers in Israel.

The current study examines the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral intervention program for improving self-control and reducing Internet addiction among Arab adolescents in Israel. The study sample included 160 students who were 7th to 9th graders, recruited from eight schools in northern Israel. All participants exhibited high scores on a questionnaire indicating elevated symptoms of Internet addiction. Students were randomized to one of two groups: the experimental group underwent a systematic intervention to reduce Internet addiction and the control group met once a week for a group conversation. The experimental group (n = 80) included 58 boys and 22 girls with an average age of 13.45 (SD = 1.46). The control group (n = 80) included 54 boys and 26 girls with an average age of 13.91 (SD = 1.92). Each intervention consisted of 8 sessions, with the experimental group receiving cognitive-behavioral treatment and the control group having a weekly classroom conversation. The results demonstrated preliminary efficacy for the intervention, as higher levels of self-control were reported among the experimental group (p < .01) but not the control group, and this contributed to a reduction in scores on the questionnaire assessing Internet addiction in the experimental group (p < .01). The findings suggest that cognitive-behavioral treatments may be a promising avenue for enhancing self-control and reducing symptoms of Internet addiction among this unique student population.

Cognitive Behavioral Intervention Program Aimed at Patients Tributary for Cardiopulmonary Bypass Surgery

Objective: The present study proposes a psychological preparation program with a cognitive behavioral intervention to reduce levels of anxiety and depression in addition to modifying the coping style of patients with heart disease who will undergo a surgical intervention with cardiopulmonary bypass. Method: A quasi-experimental pre-test-posttest study was carried out with a control group. 91 patients were evaluated prior to undergoing cardiac cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, of which 16 were selected for this study, 8 participated in psychological treatment and 8 patients were selected for the control group. Instruments: Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Questionnaire for Coping with Injuries and Health Problems. Results: Differences were found in the anxiety and depression scores of the experimental group, although these results were not statistically significant. On the other hand, a significant difference was found as a treatment effect between the groups in favor of the experimental group in the greater use of the Palliative coping style (p = 0.05) and less predominance of the Emotional style (p = 0.05). Conclusion: It is essential that the psychologist specialized in behavioral cardiology develops and carries out interventions so that the patient develops cognitive, emotional and coping strategies for the management of anxiety and depression.
