Exploring Coach-Athlete Relationships in University Basketball and Their Influence on Athlete Growth and Success Towards Building Champions

In order to study the relationship between coaches and players in college basketball and its impact on the growth and success of athletes, this paper investigated all the players of the basketball team of Yulin University. The interviewed athletes identified the relationship between their coach and athlete relationship and athlete growth and success. In this study, a combination of face-to-face survey and quantitative analysis was used to collect and compare data. There are 34 basketball players in the school, all of them selected as the study sample. The results are as follows: 1). Based from the findings of the study, the researcher came up with the following conclusions: 2). Majority of the athletes are male of not more than twenty-two years of age from level 1 and have been playing basketball for few years. 3). The dynamic and interpersonal connection between the coach and the basketball athletes is highly evident among the teams. 4). Basketball athletes have relatively the same perceptions on the coach-athlete relationships regardless of their sex, age, year level, and years of basketball experience.5). The growth and success of the basketball athletes is highly influenced by the coaching and the athletes’ experiences in the field of basketball sports. 6). Athletes have relatively the same assessment on their growth and success regardless of their sex, age, year level, and years of experience in basketball. 7). The growth and success of the basketball athletes is highly influenced by how the coaches and the athletes are being connected which involves communication, trust, mutual respect, and the exchange of feedback. This paper provides valuable insights and evidence-based strategies for both coaches and athletes to refine their techniques and ultimately improve athlete performance and personal growth. The research can enhance the ability of coaches, inspire athletes, provide information for managers, and promote the research of sports psychology, and ultimately promote the overall growth and success of college basketball players.

A Case Study of Indonesian Amateur Boxing Athletes: Is There an Influence of Organizational Culture and Quality of Service on Performance through Achievement Motivation as a Mediator?

This study aims to analyze the relationship of organizational culture and service quality to the performance of amateur boxing athletes in Indonesia through achievement motivation as a mediator variable. This correlational quantitative approach used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the help of Smart-PLS. The sample was 100 amateur boxers aged 22.5±2.0 years with 6.1±0.8 years of training experience. The validity test of the Fornell-Lacker Criterion result shows a construct value greater than other constructs (>0.7). Meanwhile, the reliability test of all items in the variable showed the results of composite reliability (>0.7) and Cronbach Alpha (>0.7). The R square value on the performance of amateur boxing athletes is 0.764 or 76.4%, while the R square on achievement motivation is 0.570 or 57%. The SRMR value or Standardized Root Mean Square 0.077 < 0.10 or 0.077 < 0.08, then the model fits with the data. Then the hypothesis results, organizational culture on performance P-Values 0.000, service quality on the performance of P-Values 0.006, organizational culture on performance through achievement motivation of P-Values 0.003, service quality on performance through achievement motivation of P-Values 0.023, meaning that the four hypotheses are acceptable. The combination of organizational culture and service quality must be united, especially in achievement sports because the study of achievement sports is always associated with the ability of athletes, psychology or the ability of coaches without reporting the influence of other variables. Importance of mental health in the sports environment

The objectives of this study are focused, firstly, on understanding the levels of cognitive anxiety, self-confidence, and pre- and post-match somatic anxiety. Secondly, to analyse the impact of the match outcome (win-loss) on the mentioned dimensions according to the Home-Away condition. The research involved 70 volleyball players (28 home and 42 away) belonging to cadet categories from different volleyball teams competing in the School Sports Program in the province of Araba, specifically in the city of Vitoria Gasteiz. Participants completed the Competitive State Anxiety Inventory in Sport (CSAI-2) (Martens et al., 1990), consisting of 27 items, adapted and validated in Spanish by Capdevila (1997), and subsequently reviewed and used by other researchers (Arruza et al., 2001; Telletxea, 2008). The results show that somatic anxiety significantly decreased between pre and post-match in the home condition, and there are significant differences between home players and away players in response to a victory outcome. The ability of coaches, monitors, and fitness trainers to understand and address athletes' anxiety states is crucial for optimizing their performance and overall well-being, as well as adherence to physical activity.

Evaluation of Sport Psychology Knowledge of Coaches at the Buleleng Volleyball Academy (ABVB)

Currently, the program contained in the training periodization focuses on physical training programs, techniques, and tactics for playing volleyball. However, the psychological condition is to blame if an athlete's performance fails. The generational difference between coaches and athletes greatly disrupts interactions, so a unique approach is needed that touches the psychological side of athletes in providing training and improving performance. This research aims to describe the level of understanding of coaches at the Buleleng Volleyball Academy (ABVB) regarding the psychology program of training periodization. This research is a descriptive analysis research, with 12 ABVB trainers as research subjects. Data were collected through observation and survey techniques with research instruments using two questionnaires. The first questionnaire determines the role of psychology in sports, and the second examines the coach's ability to implement psychology in training programs. Data analysis with data triangulation. This research was carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic, so it was carried out via Google Forms. The research results show that coaches understand the role of sports psychology but need to learn the form of training given to athletes. The conclusion is that ABVB coaches own sport psychology knowledge but have yet to apply it in handling athletes, so strengthening is needed to make coaches better at using it in training.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING OF THE COACH-SPECIALIST DEPENDING ON THE CURRENT REQUIREMENTS OF THE MODERN SPORT

The high professional training of the specialist-coach at the present time is conditioned by the alert dynamics of modern sports at all Olympic events and has become a direct dependent of this phenomenon. Nowadays, the professional competence and the coach's ability to support the requirements of the athletes' training for the competition program are highlighted by the maximum possible and correct utilization of all the information and forms of training in all the directions that the respective sports event takes. Thus, the coordinates of the professional training of the coach propagate a clear definition of the training/education of the performance athlete, all of which are oriented towards the highest possible result. The professional training process itself, determined by its complex character, implies the functionality of a much more creative and well-defined instructional system. The structure of the specialist trainer's skills training program, at the present time, requires the clear expression of all knowledge actions, which should be able to subordinate the training schemes in order to develop and improve the full bio-psycho-motor potential of the athlete. In the context of the above, it should be mentioned that in front of higher education, in which the high professional training of the future specialist-coach takes place, the problem of developing and establishing modernist didactic strategies, which propel the realization of the set of educational standards and specialized objectives to obtain a high quality product. In this case, the educational unit, which educates a well-trained professional coach, must exercise all its instructional activities at an excellent level, aiming at the high degree of acquisition of pedagogical skills and the education of the highest possible sports mastery. The present study provides the determination of the set of skills characteristic of a high degree of professional training of the specialist-coach, which, being coupled and systematized on modules, would be able to complete the vast arsenal of knowledge of the subject for the most effective centralized training of the athlete. Certainly, such a classification can complete the specialist-coach's professional profile with those characteristics, which must necessarily be consistent with the needs of training athletes depending on the current requirements of modern sports.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship and effect of coaching competency and parenting behavior on the social development of infants in Mongolian mothers with early childhood children. The subjects of this study were 210 Mongolian mothers with children aged 3 to 5 living in South Korea. The mean and standard deviation, frequency and percentage, and Cronbach's ɑ coefficient were calculated, and Pearson's momentum correlation analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis were performed. As a result, first, the study found that there was a positive correlation between mother's coaching ability and infant social development. Among the subfactors of the mother's parenting behavior and the infant's social development, there was a positive correlation between the mother's limit setting, warmth, and encouragement, but there was no significant correlation between the mother's rejection, neglect, overprotection, and acceptance. Second, among the factors of the mother's coaching competency, expression of intention and social competency have the greatest impact on the social development of infants, followed by limit setting, warmth, and encouragement among the factors of the mother's parenting behavior. Based on the above findings, this study discusses implications related to the impact of Mongolian mothers' coaching capabilities and parenting behavior on infants' social development, and presents limitations and directions for subsequent studies.

A Framework for the Standardization of Game Analysis in Ice Hockey.

Compared with other major global team sports such as football or basketball, ice hockey has received considerably less attention in sport-science research. However, the research focus on ice hockey performance is growing rapidly. Unfortunately, despite the growing interest in ice hockey, among the little research that has been conducted there are inconsistencies in terminology and methodology in the study of physiology and performance during games. The need for systematic and standardized reporting of study methodology is vital, as a lack of methodological detail or methodological inconsistencies make it impossible to replicate published studies, and alterations in the methodologies used can influence the measured demands imposed on players. Accordingly, this prohibits the ability of coaches to generate game-replicating training programs, decreasing the application of research findings to practice. In addition, a lack of methodological detail or methodological inconsistencies can result in incorrect conclusions being made from research. In this invited commentary, we aim to increase awareness regarding the current standard of methodological reporting in ice hockey game-analysis research. In addition, we have developed a framework for the standardization of game analysis in ice hockey in order to allow for greater replication in future research and to increase the application of published findings to practice. We implore researchers in the field to consult the Ice Hockey Game Analysis Research Methodological Reporting Checklist in order to adopt a detailed reporting standard of methodologies in future work to help improve the applicability of research outcomes.

Application of the Game Analytical Game (GAG) Training Model to Pariaman City Football Coaches

Football is a game sport that requires good basic technical skills. Good basic techniques will support players to be able to take many actions in a match. Choosing the right training model will encourage the creation of a structured and directed training process. Based on the analysis of needs in the field, it is known that the trainer provides training based on experience as a player, without any guidelines, so that the lack of knowledge of the trainer about variations in training can eventually lead to boredom, so that the basic technique does not improve. To overcome these problems, soccer coaches need to be given various appropriate training models. The approach method used is 1) Workshop to share understanding in preparing appropriate training programs to improve basic techniques, 2) Implementation in the field to understand more deeply how to apply the Game Analytical Game training model 3) Follow-up discussions according to the context of monitoring and evaluation. The result of this activity is the coach's ability to create appropriate and varied training programs to improve basic football technical skills.

Research on the Path of Training Athletes in Chinese Universities Under the Background of Integration of Sports and Education

The purpose of this study was to realize the cognition and practice of sports education concepts from all walks of life in China, and eliminate the barriers of traditional systems and mechanisms, it will point out the direction for the training of Chinese competitive sports reserve talents to get out of the predicament and move towards high-quality development. The cultivation of reserve talents for competitive sports in China has gone through three stages: “combination of sports and education,” “combination of education and sports,” and “integration of sports and education.” Through analysis, it is concluded that the problems encountered by high-level sports teams in Chinese colleges and universities in the process of talent training. First, the sports department mainly cultivated reserve talents in the past, and the evaluation of athletes paid more attention to medals and honors. However, the main focus of the work of the education department is to enhance the physical fitness of the students and promote the physical and mental health of the students. Secondly, the lack of investment in training by universities leads to low coaching level and ability of coaches, which is the main factor restricting the training of athletes. Finally, in actual campus life, athletes spend most of their time in daily competitions and training, and their cultural performance is not good, which leads to their inability to truly master the cultural knowledge of their chosen major during their studies, it is challenging to choose a career as an elite in related industries after graduation. First, the main body of implementing the training of competitive sports talents in the new era in the sports department and the education department. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the coordination, communication and cooperation between the two departments to realize the sharing and sharing of resources between them. Secondly, universities should provide athletes with diversified teaching projects and practice forms. The teachers’ team is divided into two categories: physical education teachers and physical education coaches. Teachers are responsible for daily classroom teaching work to achieve the goal of coordinated development of physical exercise and cultural learning. The coach is responsible for sports training, through scientific and systematic training to enable students to reach a specific level of competition. Finally, universities should adopt learning planning guidance for athletes to help them complete their learning tasks, improve their cultural literacy, and enable them to master sports skills without delaying their normal study life.

유아기 자녀 어머니의 코칭역량 및 양육불안이 유아의 자아존중감에 미치는 영향

The purpose of this study is to examine the differences according to the mother's coaching competence and general tendency of parenting anxiety, and to find out how the mother's coaching competence and parenting anxiety affect the infant's self-esteem. The method of this study was a questionnaire survey of 259 mothers with infancy children aged 3-5 years old, and the collected data were analyzed for frequency, percentage, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 21.0. The results of this study are as follows. First, as a result of examining the general trends of mothers' coaching competency, parenting anxiety, and children's self-esteem, the overall average score for coaching competency was higher than normal, and parenting anxiety was low. In addition, the children's self-esteem was found to be above average in the overall average. Second, there was a significant correlation between the sub-factors of the mother's coaching ability and parenting anxiety and the sub-factors of the children's self-esteem. Third, “social competency factors” among mothers' coaching competencies and “anxiety due to parental efficacy” and “concern factors for children” among parenting anxiety have a relatively influential influence on children's self-esteem. In other words, higher mother's coaching competency and lower parenting anxiety had a positive effect on the infant's self-esteem. Based on these results, this study is significant in providing basic data for parental education and program development to increase mothers' coaching capabilities and to reduce parenting anxiety.

Addressing the self-care needs of coaches through the use of formulation

ABSTRACT If coaches are to deliver their best work, it is important that they are emotionally and psychologically well-resourced. In a rapidly changing and increasingly complex world, the ability of coaches to monitor, manage and enable their own well-being is an important component of effective and ethical practice. However, little is known about the self-care needs and practices of coaches, with few resources available to guide practitioners in the development of personalised self-care plans. In this context, it is argued that the use of formulation has the potential to make a significant contribution. Formulation is well-established in applied psychology as a means of better understanding and responding to the needs of individual clients. This article extends the use of formulation to the domain of coach self-care. Following a review of literature relevant to self-care and to formulation, the article presents a case study which illustrates how formulation was applied by a coach to enhance self-awareness, self-monitoring and decision-making in relation to her self-care needs. Particular attention is paid to the way in which the process guided the coach's thinking and decision-making to illustrate how formulation can enable reflective practice in relation to self-care. Implications for training and practice are considered.

The Development of Emotional Intelligence Scale in Sport Coaching

Purpose The purpose of this study was to develop the Emotional Intelligence Scale in Sport Coaching(EISSC) based on the emotional intelligence trait model. Methods The participants were 236 professional sports coaches by the purposive sampling methods via e-mails. 48 preliminary items were developed by literature review among expert panels. Then, a total of 40 items were selected after the item-analysis. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted for construct validity and criterion validity was evaluated by Person’s correlation with coaching efficacy scale and general emotional intelligence scale. An internal consistency, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, was used to see the reliability. Results The results of exploratory factor analysis presented a six sub-structure factors (Self-awareness, Awareness of others, Optimism, Utilization of emotion, Emotion regulation, Social skills) with 20 items, which explained 68.49% of the total variance. Criterion-related validity was supported by correlations with in coaching efficacy(r=.713) and general emotional intelligence(r=.647). Reliabilities were secured with Cronbach’s alpha coefficient .854 for the total 20 items. Conclusions The EISSC can be used to provide an valid measure of emotional ability of coaches in sport.

Multiple Criteria Decision-Making: A Novel Applications of Network DEA Model

Do retired professional baseball players become effective coaches? Are Taiwanese coaches up to the job of coaching in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL)? What are the key coaching factors affecting a CPBL team’s performance in the regular-season? In this study, we examine the key coaching factors affecting the efficiency of CPBL teams from the perspective of efficiency and productivity, using network data envelopment analysis, truncated regression analysis, and bootstrapping methods to provide specific recommendations. We calculated the efficiency of each CPBL team from the 2014 to 2016 regular-seasons. First, the “ex-member” indicator had a significant negative impact on team performance, indicating that a coaching team consisting of coaches with different backgrounds or experience is advantageous to a team’s performance in games; and second, the “ex-professional player” indicator had a significant impact on team performance in the regular season, indicating that the valuable experience of retired professional baseball players definitely has value. The proposed model, after being modified appropriately according to practical needs, can be widely applied to comprehensively track the coaching ability of professional baseball teams and coaches, as well as the players’ ability and efficiency, and will help implement improvements in all aspects of performance management with originality and significant impact.

Visual classification of running economy by distance running coaches

Objectives: This study assessed the ability of coaches to rank-order distance runners on running economy (RE) through visual assessment. Methods: Running economy was measured in five trained recreational distance runners at a speed of 3.57 m·s−1, with a minimum VO2 difference of 2-mL.kg−1.min−1 between adjacent runners. Following measurement of RE, participants were filmed from the front, side, and rear while running on a treadmill. Endurance coaches from high school to international level (N = 121) viewed each video and ranked the runners on a scale from 1 (most economical) to 5 (least economical). Coaches also completed a demographic questionnaire and listed running style biomechanical observations they used in determining each ranking. A cumulative odds ordinal logistic regression with proportional odds was run to determine the effect of coaching level, years of coaching experience, years of training experience, competition level, certification status, and education level, on the ability of distance running coaching to accurately rank RE among a group of runners. Results: No coaching characteristic was a significant predictor of ranking accuracy, χ 2 = 3.566, p = .735. Conclusions: Visual assessment of effort, based on RE, is a difficult task, even for the trained eye and could be related to difficulty in understanding the interaction effect of various RE factors or the translation of scientific-based knowledge to the field of play. Practically, coaches should be cautious when recommending biomechanical adjustments without considering the interconnected factors related to such changes.

On-ice Energy Cost And Lactate Production During An All-out Anaerobic Test In Ice Hockey Players

The lack of ice hockey-specific lactic anaerobic assessment tools limits the ability of coaches to better track and develop their players. PURPOSE: Establish two predictive equations for assessing indirectly 1) the O2 energy expenditure, and 2) the maximum lactate concentration following an all-out on-ice skating effort. METHODS: Twenty male elite ice hockey players participated in this study (age=15.7±1.0 year). The maximal anaerobic skating test (MAST) consisted of skating back and forth on an 18.2m course at maximal speed with abrupt stops at each end for a total of 12 shuttles (average time=52.0±2.0s). The O2 energy cost was measured using a portable metabolic analyzer (Cosmed K4b2) and the maximum post-exercise lactate concentration at 1, 3, 5, 15, and 20 min was measured with a Lactate Pro analyzer. The independent variables used to estimate O2 consumption were body mass, time, heart rate, and the number of skating strides and skating stride index both measured at the 2nd shuttle. For the lactate concentration estimation, the independent variables used were time, heart rate, and the number of skating strides and skating stride index both measured at the 6th shuttle. RESULTS: Correlation coefficients for both equations were r=0.87 and standard error of estimate (SEE) were 6.2% and 6.8% respectively for O2 uptake and lactate production, indicating that validity of the regression algorithms were excellent. Particularly for the estimation of the lactate level, the removal of variables in relation to the skating efficiency reduces the correlation to 0.49 and increases the SEE to 10.5% thus indicating the importance of considering an index of skating efficiency during this type of evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: To our knowledge, there is no specific ice hockey field test allowing the indirect estimation of O2 cost and lactate concentration in a purely anaerobic test. Thus, using simple and easy-to-measure variables, coaches will be able to monitor more effectively their players’ progress in an effort to optimize their individual on-ice anaerobic performance.

Does Socioeconomic Status Limit an Equivalency Sport Coach’s Ability to Recruit Student-Athletes? The purpose of this exploratory, quantitative study was to determine whether NCAA Division I coaches in equivalency sports, where scholarships are divided among athletes, consider a potential recruit’s socioeconomic status prior to and during the recruiting process. A survey was sent to all NCAA Division I soccer, track & field, baseball, and softball head coaches. Surveys were returned at a rate of 24.6 percent. The data sets were analyzed through mean comparisons and ANOVA analyses. The results of this study indicated that socioeconomic status is a factor in the recruiting process. Additionally, the data revealed that involvement in club sport activity is a primary recruiting tool that can restrict potential recruits from lower socioeconomic households. Collegiate coaches and administrators, as well as high school coaches, can utilize the findings to help learn more about other funding opportunities, including those related to academic standing and community service.
