Music Education Resource Materials in Relation to Quality of Teaching in Changsha County, China

The study conducted in-depth research and statistics on the music education resources and teaching quality of Changsha County, the participants of the study Were junior students from the Music School of Changsha Normal College. To understand their current assessment of the music education resources and music teaching quality in Changsha County. The results show that: The survey of student respondents showed a nearly balanced gender distribution (53.2% male, 46.8% female) and primarily included students over 20 years old, indicating a mature student demographic. Respondents generally affirmed the professional level and teaching quality of music teachers but highlighted deficiencies in resource allocation and extracurricular community support. Sex and age differences in evaluating resource adequacy, teacher quality, and community support were not significant, indicating consistent perceptions across these demographics. High-quality resource materials in music classes were strongly correlated with positive teacher attributes, such as enthusiasm, interaction skills, and organizational ability, suggesting that well-resourced classrooms enhance teacher effectiveness and student engagement.

In the article, the scientific-theoretical basis and possibilities of using the connection of subjects in music culture classes of general education schools are analyzed in connection with the specific structural features of music classes, and methodical recommendations are put forward.

Strategies and Tools for Teaching Music Learners about Citations

abstract: Formatting citations is a task faced by students across all disciplines and at all stages of their academic careers, and the wide variety of content types and formats used in music-related research means that this work can be especially complex for students in music classes. How can library staff teach music students about footnotes and bibliography entries without spending entire sessions pointing out the positions of commas and parentheses, thereby leaving limited time to discuss the relationship of citations to knowledge production? The authors introduce a range of methods for providing instruction on formatting citations, including the implementation of a flipped classroom approach, incorporating interactive tutorials, engaging students with in-class group activities, and providing course instructors with asynchronous learning tools like videos to link from a learning management system. By introducing students to the value of citing their sources and the process of citation creation, library staff can promote long-term retention of relevant concepts while using instruction time efficiently.

The article analyses the history and practice of music education in the Kursk Mariinsky women’s gymnasium, which at the beginning of the 20th century became one of the centres of the artistic life of the provincial centre. The three main stages in the formation of the system of female gymnasium education in Kursk are studied both from the perspective of introducing gymnasium girls to musical culture, and in the aspect of identifying the foundations and the process of forming the musical traditions of the educational institution— the predecessor of the modern Kursk State University. A historiographic analysis leads to the conclusion that the information about the musical upbringing and education of pupils of the Mariinsky gymnasium in Kursk is insignificant. Hence, the purpose of the study is to collect, systematize and analyse the main aspects of the musical training of the pupils of the Kursk Mariinsky women’s gymnasium. As a result of the research, three historical stages of musical training in the gymnasium were identified. The first stage is the formation of the spiritual and religious traditions of the women’s first-class pedagogical school (since 1861), the Kursk women’s gymnasium (since 1870), and the Mariinsky gymnasium (since its inclusion in the Department of Institutions of Empress Maria, since 1871). The second is the creation of a system of additional musical education for schoolgirls, which was the result of the arrival of A.M. Abaza in Kursk and the opening of Kursk music classes by him (since 1882). The activity of the outstanding musician led not only to the active professional training of performers on academic instruments and guitar, but also to the growth of vocal and choral skills in the city. It is also significant that the direction of the choirs was carried out by him on a gratuitous basis. The third period is the result of the traditions of the previous stages; it brought musical education and enlightenment to a new level with the acquisition of a new Mariinsky gymnasium building with an assembly hall, which today, already as the hall of the Kursk State University, is recognized as the best in the region in terms of acoustics for academic vocalists, which contributes to the preservation and strengthening of the traditions of the past in our day.

Decoding compositional complexity: Identifying composers using a model fusion-based approach with nonlinear signal processing and chaotic dynamics

Music, a universal medium that effortlessly transcends the confines of language and culture, serves as a vessel for the distinctive expression of a composer's ingenuity, particularly palpable through the elaborate symphony of melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. This phenomenon is acutely observable in the realm of Turkish Classical Music, where the identification of individual composers poses a formidable challenge due to a confluence of diverse stylistic expressions and sophisticated techniques. Shaped by centuries of cultural interchanges, this genre is celebrated for its convoluted rhythmic frameworks and deep melodic modes, often exhibiting fractal characteristics that compound the complexity of composer classification based on mere audio signals. In response to these complexities, this study introduces an advanced analytical paradigm that amalgamates Multi-resolution analysis, spectral entropy assessments, and a spectrum of multidimensional chaotic and statistical descriptors. By invoking chaos theory, the research delineates distinct patterns and features inherent to musical compositions, subsequently deploying these discoveries for composer categorization. Employing a model fusion-based strategy, the approach utilizes esteemed base estimators for section-level probabilistic determinations, subsequently amalgamated at the song level through a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network model to classify a corpus of 380 compositions from 15 distinct composers. The results of this study not only highlight the efficacy of chaos-based approaches in Musical Information Retrieval but also provide a nuanced understanding of the unique characteristics of Turkish Classical Music, thus advancing the boundaries of how musicological data is scrutinized and conceptualized within scholarly discourse.

Exploring the Relationship Between Voice Disorders in Indian Classical Music and the Guru-Shishya Parampara Through an Understanding of the Autonomic Nervous System

ABSTRACT The Guru-Shishya Parampara (GSP), translated as the teacher-student tradition, is a lineage-based oral tradition in Indian Classical Music (ICM). This study explores the relationship between GSP’s traditional obedience-authority dynamic and prevalent voice disorders experienced by ICM practitioners. Combining Constructivist Grounded Theory document analysis and a narrative literature review, the research investigates how disciplinarian tendencies and power differentials in authoritarian implementations of the GSP may contribute to or reinforce voice disorders resulting from psychological strain. Adopting the Indigenous Research Paradigm, the study prioritizes insights from ICM practitioners’ lived experiences within the cultural context of ICM within the analysis. A narrative review of existing literature on the links between autonomic nervous system responses associated with psychological stressors and voice disorders is discussed to further understand the impact of authoritarian GSPs on singers’ voices. Literature on compassion is additionally explored to discuss potential solutions to address the identified issues. Through this approach, the study offers insights into the complex interactions between power dynamics, psychological strain, and voice disorders within obedience-expectant GSPs, aiming to contribute to the development of effective interventions, highlighting that which already exists within ICM culture, to promote vocal health and overall well-being in this ancient and culturally significant tradition.

Localization and detection of underwater acoustic communication signals using convolutional recursive neural networks

Abstract This paper employs a multi-task neural network (UWAELD) to simultaneously perform the Underwater Acoustic Communication Event Detection (UACED) and direction-of-arrival (DOA) mission. Typically, the UACED and DOA tasks are executed separately, as the UACED task is identified through time-frequency analysis, while the DOA task is identified through the amplitude and phase differences of the signal, making it very difficult to jointly perform both tasks. To overcome this, we utilize a logarithmic spectrogram for time-frequency analysis and stack the normalized eigenvectors obtained by processing the signal covariance matrix. We ultimately evaluate the network’s feasibility using simulation data and lake test data, utilizing acoustical signals measured in actual experiments. Finally, for the UADCED task, the error rate is only 6%, with an F1 score of 0.83; for the DOA task, the localization error is only 1.72°, with a localization recall score of 0.87. Additionally, for the DOA task, we employ the classical MUSIC algorithm to demonstrate the network’s superiority.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the experiences, perceptions, and effective teaching methods of music teachers utilizing the Metaverse in music classes. A survey was conducted with 88 secondary school music teachers in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, frequency analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, and independent sample t-test. The results are as follows: First, teachers had a basic understanding of the terminology and concepts of the Metaverse and recognized it as a means to engage learners, showing willingness to integrate it into their music class. Second, music teachers who had attended training or had experience with Metaverse-based music classes felt confident in using it for various music activities, understanding the educational goals, and employing it appropriately. Third, teachers perceived that Metaverse-based music activities and class sturctures could include virtual instrument experiences, autonomous learing space navigation, use of diverse visual and three-dimensional learing materials, motivation enhacement, increased immersion, experiential learning, and activities in music appreciation. Fourth, anticipated difficulties included the burden of class preparation and limitations in communication infrastructure and device usage. Teachers identified the need for support and educational content on Metaverse usage for both instructors and learners, as well as sharing of best practices and class design strategies among teachers. This study higlights the deucational potential of the Metaverse in music education and provides foundational data for the direction of teacher trainging in digital media utilization.

Concept-based curriculum is a curriculum that emphasizes on leading learners to form conceptual understanding through the process of inquiry into facts and phenomena and transferring them to new contexts. The purpose of this study is to explore music class design plan based on Concept-based curriculum. For this purpose, the main contents of concept-based curriculum, the emergence and application of conceptual approach in music education field, and concept-based lesson model for music class. Music concepts are the basis of understanding the structure and principles of music and musical activities, and it is very important to help students form concepts even in music classes centered on various activities. This study is significant in that it reconsiders the meaning and role of conceptual understanding in the general school music education process and expands the discussion on connections to other subjects and life.

블랜디드 러닝 수업을 적용한 칼림바 합주 수업지도 방안 연구: 메타버스 플랫폼 ‘ZEP’을 중심으로

The purpose of this study is to design a Kalimba ensemble teaching plan based on the direction and digital application of the 2022 revised curriculum, and to suggest ways to effectively fulfill the goals of the 2022 revised curriculum in the school setting. The theoretical backgrounds of the Kalimba and the Metaverse were gathered through a review of academic papers and dissertations. The performance domain of the 2022 revised music curriculum was analyzed to design a teaching plan and explore practical methods for implementing a digital-instrument integrated class, as intended by the revised curriculum. The digital elements and music performance classes emphasized in the 2022 revised curriculum were fused so that students could experience the basics of new technologies. To create a student-led participatory class, a virtual reality space and study score were produced directly, enabling students to engage in creative and self-directed learning. To complement this, this study creates a virtual reality space using the Metaverse platform "ZEP" and provides online video and ensemble performance forms using the video link connection function of "ZEP" to foster basic digital literacy and improve music performance. It is hoped that research on instrumental teaching methods using digital media will be further expanded so that students can recognize the sensibility and value of music.

정악곡 세령산을 활용한 국악 창작 수업 개발 - 개러지 밴드를 통한 실음 학습을 중심으로 -

The purpose of this study is to develop a Korean traditional music creation class program using Jeongak. Yeongsanhoesang, a representative piece of Korean traditional music that has been completed through a long period of transmission, has a variety of creative techniques and is highly utilized in creative classes. In this study, Seryeongsan was selected from the Yeongsanhoesang as a sanction song for the 5th to 6th graders of elementary school, and a class was developed to learn basic notation systems such as Yulmyeong(pitch names) and Jeongganbo, and to create music through tonal group learning and melody construction learning. In addition, for realistic music learning, a digital medium called the GarageBand was used so that the results of creative learning could be realized into actual music. This study is meaningful in expanding the scope of Korean traditional music creation classes and enhancing the applicability of actual music-oriented Korean traditional music learning using digital media by suggesting educational application of creative classes for Jeongak pieces, which was mainly used as music for appreciation.

A Case Study on the Application of Information Technology in Rural Music Education

In recent years, the application of information technology in the field of education has received considerable attention, especially in music education, where its potential is increasingly evident. This study explores the application of information technology in rural music education through a case study of a volunteer teacher teaching music in a rural school in China. Using qualitative research methods, including classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with the teacher and students, the study analyzes the practical application of information technology in music education. The results show that by integrating multidisciplinary teaching methods and using interactive games and information technology, rural students not only developed a strong interest in learning music but also improved their singing skills and emotional expression abilities. These methods enabled students to better grasp musical knowledge. This study provides valuable insights for educators and demonstrates the significant potential of information technology in rural music education in China. The research indicates that even in resource-limited rural areas, the successful application of information technology in music classes is feasible. As information technology continues to develop, educators should continue to explore and innovate, providing students with richer and more effective educational resources to enhance educational quality and promote the comprehensive development of students.

A Survey and Research on the Current Situation of the Introduction of Chinese Ethnic Instrumental Music into Classes ——Taking Jining of Shandong Province as an Example

Chinese traditional ethnic musical instruments have undergone a legacy of five thousand years, from the exquisite bone flutes of the ancient Xia and Shang dynasties to the pinnacle of plucked string music in the Sui and Tang dynasties. Many ethnic instruments and musical pieces with enchanting tones and boundless charm have been passed down, making them a brilliant gem in the world of music. Since the early 1990s, Xu Le has advocated for the inclusion of these excellent traditional instruments in primary and secondary school music classes to enrich the content of music education and strongly promote the implementation and popularization of aesthetic education policies. Chen Jinfeng believes that take introducing ethnic instrumental music as basic education can comprehensively cultivate students’ interests, enrich their aesthetic experiences and tastes, and achieve a high degree of integration between traditional ethnic instrumental music and quality education. This paper investigates the implementation of introducing ethnic instrumental music into classroom in three primary and secondary schools in Jining, Shandong Province. The data is collected and analyzed by field interviews and online questionnaires. And the necessity and urgency of introducing ethnic instrumental music is highlighted after summarizing, comparing and analyzing the study. It is hoped that this research will continuously propel the introduction of ethnic instrumental music in primary and secondary school curricula, contributing to the enhancement of overall quality and the popularization of aesthetic education.

"More Than Just Composers": Teachers' Identities as Music Creatives and the Impact on Teaching Composition

The large research study on which this paper draws examined the preparation of early-career teachers (ECTs) in New South Wales to teach composition and musical creativity. Presenting data collected through a Constructivist Grounded Theory (CGT) research design, and semi-structured interviews and themes, this article explores the theme of Musical Identity as it arose in the larger study. Through discussions with ECTs and composers who have experience teaching composition in NSW secondary schools, this study examined and compared these groups’ personal definitions of composition and perceptions of composer/creator identity and explored the implications of these definitions and identities on how these groups approach composition instruction in NSW secondary schools. These discussions revealed that participants held a wide variety of definitions of composing and the composer identity, stemming from composition’s strong Western Art Music (WAM) connotations, and these ambiguities presented themselves as barriers for the participants to teach composition effectively. Literature in this area indicates that, with relatively little pedagogical understanding of it, composition is neglected in initial teacher education (ITE) programs in Australia, Canada, Finland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. As music education activities should be facilitated using processes and paradigms that reflect the paradigms of students, music teachers’ personal definitions of composition need to be broadened through their ITE experiences. In order to democratise the act of creating music, syllabus terminology and requirements should be revised to reflect these broader definitions of music creation in NSW secondary schools.

Artificial intelligence robots based on machine learning and visual algorithms for interactive experience assistance in music classrooms

This article aims to study the application of artificial intelligence robots based on machine learning and visual algorithms in music classroom interactive experience assistance. In artificial intelligence robots, mobile adaptive networks can be used to optimize the perception and decision-making abilities of robots. By continuously learning and adapting to environmental changes, robots can better understand and respond to the interactive needs of music classrooms, providing more accurate and targeted auxiliary services. By learning and analyzing rich training data, robots can possess higher-level cognitive and comprehension abilities. In terms of music recommendation, the K-nearest neighbor algorithm is used to recommend music works that are suitable for students. By analyzing students’ music preferences and learning needs, robots provide personalized music recommendations to students based on this information, helping them better participate in and enjoy music classes. By applying machine learning and visual algorithms to music classroom interaction experiments, artificial intelligence robots based on machine learning and visual algorithms have the potential to assist in music classroom interaction experience, and teaching optimization strategies for music classrooms have been proposed.

음악교육의 역사적 관점에서 바라본 초등학교 저학년의 ‘즐거운 생활’

This research proceeds from posing a question whether the ‘enjoyable life’ in Korea is justified from a vantage point of music education. The writer highlights historical contexts between the general school music class and the ‘enjoyable life’ as an integrated subject. And then, the curricular for the ‘enjoyable life’ are analytically examined for the connection between music class and the ‘enjoyable life’. In ancient times, a comprehensive music education was recommended as it is shown in works of Confucius or Plato. Music was also a significant subject matter in elementary schools in the Christian culture where singing hymns established an educational tradition as a process of socialization. However an aesthetic and humanistic approach, for example by Rousseau or Pestalozzi, is regarded as the cornerstone of modern music education in elementary school. The ‘enjoyable life’ in Korea emerged in 1980s which seemingly succeed to traditional music class, and eventually claimed an independent subject, but from the perspective that music curricula can lead holistic development in children, it has been unsuitable for integrative education. Thus, the writer proposes to restore the music class instead of ‘enjoyable life’ in elementary school and to enhance teaching methods for integrated music education.

디지털 테크놀로지를 활용한 음악 창작 수업 실행에 관한 질적 사례 연구: 행위자-네트워크 이론에 기반하여

This study aims to explore practices of music creation classes that utilize digital technology based on actor-network theory. For this purpose, the study conducted a qualitative case study of four middle school music teachers who incorporate digital technology in their music creation classes. The study revealed that the interaction between human and nonhuman actors in and out of school differed among teachers, such as the combination of heterogeneous things, entanglement of what is mine and what is not, alliances with actors beyond the school, and coexistence of old and new. The study also found that nonhuman actors exerted their own positive or negative thingpower on teachers, such as new attempts and challenges, becoming teachers as co-learners, excessive focus on technology, and unexpected occurrences, resulting in changes in teachers’ teaching practices. Based on these findings, it was suggested that there is a need for research that considers a variety of human and nonhuman actors involved in teachers' teaching practices and comprehends music creation classes using digital technology more diversely.
