Revisiting city tourism in the longer run: an exploratory analysis based on LBSN data

ABSTRACT This study addresses the methodological gap in tourism research regarding the long-term monitoring of tourism activities in urban settings. We propose an analytical framework that uses data from location-based social networks (LBSN) to derive tourists’ digital footprints resulting in a sustained, yet partial, overview of tourist activity and mobility in urban destinations. Significantly, we found that LBSN data might signal changes in the geography of city tourism over time. This study pioneers the use of LBSN data to gain knowledge about city tourism in the longer run, thereby providing a means to review the development of tourism cities. The proposed framework abstracts the geographic dimension of tourism cities and extends spatial analysis to the study of tourism destinations. Moreover, the materials and methods used can be reproduced in other case studies, offering spatial measurements for comparative study, and potentially informing urban planning and design in tourism destinations.

Tourism representation and strategies on public signs: linguistic landscape of a Saudi southern tourist destination

PurposeThis study aims to investigate multilingual representation on public signs in the High City tourist destination in Abha, Saudi Arabia. It also reveals the linguistic strategies used in such representation.Design/methodology/approachThis exploratory qualitative study used purposive sampling to analyze bottom-up public signs collected from the target tourist destination. A preliminary analysis was conducted for a more in-depth qualitative analysis of every sign. An Excel database was used to provide a general description and a preliminary reading of the strategies before using an in-depth analysis of every sign.FindingsThe study revealed that monolingualism (Arabic or English) and bilingualism (Arabic and English) represented the High City as a tourist destination where the signs served information and symbolic functions. No single multilingual sign was found. Certain linguistic strategies were used on the public signs, including politeness, transliteration, hybrid representation, personification and fragmentary. Some tourist-oriented strategies, such as the crisis communication strategy, are still missing.Practical implicationsThese findings indicate that this tourist destination still targets local and regional visitors, and its linguistic landscape (LL) needs further consideration in terms of internationalization and targeting international visitors. This study implies that bilingual Arabic and English tourist destinations are potential domains for translation students and English language learners.Originality/valueThis study has focused on the LL of a newly established tourist destination in Saudi Arabia. It has shed light on the nuanced representations and strategies used through public signage. It contributes to understanding how linguistic elements can shape tourists’ perceptions and experiences.

Shanghai Tourism Carbon Footprint Measurement Based on Final Consumption and Suggestions for Improvement of Urban Tourism Facilities

As a major tourist city in China, Shanghai's tourism industry generates a great deal of carbon emissions. However, China is now actively practicing measures to reduce carbon emissions in order to protect the environment. Therefore, it is particularly important to measure Shanghai tourism carbon footprint. The results of this study can help characterize the carbon emission of Shanghai's tourist industry, so that the government can better improve Shanghai's tourism - based on its characteristics and reduce the carbon emissions in a more effective manner, which can better respond to the national and global low-carbon trend. This research utilizes the "from bottom to up" approach, collects data from Shanghai's tourism final consumption, measures the sub-industrys carbon footprint using the carbon emission coefficients, and then performs a superposition calculation to determine the characteristics of Shanghai's overall tourism and sub-industry carbon footprint, and the composition of carbon footprint in transportation. It shows following problems: the national environmental protection awareness has not yet been formed, and the tourism's related technologies and service facilities have not been able to guide tourists to reduce carbon emissions. In view of the characteristics and problems, this paper puts forward three suggestions, including the innovation of tourism-related technologies, the transformation of tourism service facilities and the enhancement of national low-carbon awareness.

How air pollution affects tourism revenue: evidence from China

ABSTRACT It is acknowledged that air pollution has a detrimental impact on tourism revenue, but the mechanisms behind this impact remain unknown. Previous studies have merely assumed that air pollution affects tourism revenue through the number of tourists. Based on the inbound tourism data of 47 major tourist cities in China from 2005 to 2017, this study reveals that in addition to lowering the number of tourists, air pollution also reduces tourist expenditure per capita by shortening their length of stay, ultimately leading to a decrease in tourism revenue. The finding is robust even when the endogeneity of air pollution is considered. Moreover, the results also show that the impact of air pollution on tourism revenue, tourist flow, tourist expenditure per capita, and length of stay is nonlinear. The findings of this paper contribute to an accurate assessment of the economic consequences of air pollution on tourism.

Substitution effect of tourism destinations in Türkiye: Case study of Iranian tourists

This study investigates the substitution effect between the destinations of Iranian tourists who travel to Turkey, distinguishing between Istanbul and other touristic cities. For this purpose, it uses the Dynamic Linear Regression model in the class of time-varying parameters described in a State Space framework. The data are monthly 2018-1 to 2023-2 the results show that there is a dynamic relationship between the “number of incoming Iranian tourists to Istanbul” and “the number of incoming Iranian tourists to other destinations”. It seems that the opening of Istanbul's new airport and the diversification of flights to Turkish destinations have an important factor in the dynamics of the parameter. There is a substitution effect between Istanbul and other touristic destinations. Also, inflation (both Iran and Turkey) affects Iranians' travel behavior to Turkey due to two features: One is due to the decrease in the purchasing power of Iranians and the second is due to the change in the national currency of the two countries.

Research on the Perception and Dissemination of Tourist Attraction Images in Tourist Cities under Cross-Cultural Backgrounds: Data from International Tourists’ Online Reviews

This paper investigates the perception and dissemination strategies of tourist images in tourist cities from the perspective of international tourists with cross-cultural characteristics, coming from different countries. It selects 13 tourist cities in Jiangsu Province, China, as case studies. By analyzing online review data from international tourists entering the country, the study examines both positive and negative perceptions of tourist attraction images. The results reveal that the language and volume of the reviews reflect the origins and scale of the international tourists, while the content of these reviews indicates their preferences for tourist attractions. A comparative analysis of the review data suggests that there are differences in the perceived images of tourist cities. The conclusions of this study suggest that tourism city managers, tourism business operators, and local residents can make efforts to improve the city’s tourism development. These improvements can be achieved by utilizing international media platforms to disseminate tourism images, enhancing the quality of tourist attraction operations, and strengthening cultural exchanges in tourism.

Fire station layout assessment in tourism-type city based on fire risk: A case study of Dujiangyan City

With the development of tourism and the acceleration of urbanization, tourist cities have sprung up like bamboo shoots. Large population flow and more cultural relics are the characteristics of the current tourist city, which brings greater fire risk. The current research pays little attention to fire safety problems in tourist cities. This article takes the urban area of Dujiangyan, a tourist city, as the research object, and uses the superposition tool of GIS to make a fire risk grade map with a total of 9 factors of regional characteristics and architectural characteristics superimposed by weight. The result shows that there are still many areas with high fire risk in Dujiangyan, such as the ancient urban area where tourists gather and the southwest sub-area of Dujiangyan urban area. Based on the positioning and distribution model, 6 new fire station layout points are selected, and the responsibility division map of 9 fire stations in Dujiangyan City is finally obtained, which provides a reference for the layout of fire stations in Dujiangyan City.

Exploring the High-Quality Development of Smart City Tourism in the Information Age

Abstract This article discusses the high-level guidance strategy and deep-level value embodiment of tourism informatization construction for smart city tourism. Based on the existing evaluation system of intelligent city tourism development, the article utilizes BP neural network for data screening. It combines the entropy weight method to complete the index assignment, and evaluates and analyzes the development of innovative tourism services in six intelligent cities. In the area of brilliant tourism information service, Beijing scored 94%. In clever catering and accommodation services, Beijing leads with a score of 90%, while Nanjing and Chengdu rank second and third with scores of 81% and 80% respectively. Regarding overall innovative tourism development, Beijing scored 0.4731, 0.1762, and 0.1168 in terms of scientific and technological innovation, economic development, and general development security, respectively. In addition, the intelligent tourism development trend from 2018 to 2022 shows that Beijing’s tourism revenue will reach 622.46 billion yuan in 2022, which is 30.36 billion yuan more than the previous year. By evaluating the development of intelligent city tourism services through BP neural network, this paper effectively identifies the critical factors for developing clever tourism construction. It puts forward effective strategies to improve the level of intelligent services. These findings have important theoretical and practical significance for the development of intellectual city tourism field, and provide an essential reference for the further optimization of smart city tourism services.

Impact Assessment of Large-scale Sports Events on Tourism: A Case Study of the 16th Asian Games

Abstract The positive impact of hosting large-scale sports events on tourism is examined in this study, focusing on the 16th Asian Games as the research subject. The Difference-in-Difference Method and Synthetic Control Method are employed to analyze the event’s influence on tourism in Guangzhou and other cities within Guangdong Province. The findings demonstrate a significant driving effect of such events on the growth of tourism in host cities over subsequent years. Moreover, it is revealed that the 16th Asian Games has a particularly pronounced impact on remote cities located far from Guangzhou, including those situated in the eastern, western, and northern regions of Guangdong Province. Consequently, this study suggests that host cities should seize opportunities by engaging in scientific planning and meticulous arrangements for large-scale events. Additionally, other cities within the province where these events take place should actively participate in enhancing their ability to serve such occasions while improving both the level and quality of their tourism services. This approach will enable them to capitalize effectively on hosting opportunities and facilitate high-quality development across all parts of the province.

Održivi razvoj gradskog turizma u Kragujevcu

The development of tourism in cities in recent years has increasingly led to negative ecological, socio-cultural, and economic effects. Cities in Serbia are facing the same issues, and therefore must plan their tourism development according to the principles of sustainable development in order to reduce the negative impact of tourism. Market research is crucial for planning strategies for sustainable urban tourism development. This scientific work highlights the importance of market research for the sustainable development of tourism in Kragujevac, with a focus on the identification of key elements that contribute to the improvement of city tourism. A survey conducted among 302 respondents during June and July 2023 collected data on demographics, motivation for visiting, satisfaction with the offerings, and perceptions of the ecological and social aspects of tourism. The results show that tourists are most attracted to cultural and historical landmarks, events, natural beauty, and gastronomic offerings. The research revealed challenges in the sustainable use of natural and cultural resources, which requires further consideration to enhance tourism development. Strategies that support environmentally friendly practices, such as using renewable energy sources and promoting eco-tourism, along with improving tourists' awareness of sustainable practices, are recommended.

Značaj menadžmenta u razvoju gradskog turizma u Srbiji

Tourism today plays an increasingly important role in the economy, and its further growth depends on the coordinated development and adaptation of the tourist product to modern market trends, where different forms of tourism of special interest are gaining more and more importance. City tourism is one of the special forms of tourism that offers this branch of the Serbian economy a long-term competitive advantage. The main strength of the city's tourist destination is the attraction complexes, which have two functions - to attract the guest and fulfill his expectations. The potential of this demand can be fully utilized by a planned and coordinated approach to the development of this tourist product. The development of urban tourism will also mean a better place for residents to live, and economic benefits for the entire community will be brought not only by higher tourist demand, but also by increased consumption of the local population stimulated by a more attractive place to live created by the development of tourist facilities. Despite numerous attractions and values, Serbian tourist products have not been properly marketed, adequately developed, nor presented and commercialized on the international tourist market. Serbia must significantly raise the competitiveness and attractiveness of tourist products through respectable world experiences and its own innovations, relying on those products and business sectors in tourism that have a global perspective and where Serbia can build global competitiveness.

The notion of emptiness/vacuum has been one of the most frequently used to refer to the situation of the streets and tourist attractions during the first year of the COVID-19 containment measures. The absence of tourists and the closure of businesses targeting this type of clientele, led to completely unique images of Barcelona city which for decades has been accustomed to withstanding the disproportionate pressure of tourism on its streets. This text presents the results of Closed for holidays. Portraits of a tourist vacuum, an experimental project that set out to gather images of Barcelona without tourists to analyze to what extent this vacuum was real or, on the contrary, a social universe had emerged from it, usually buried under the city's tourist organization planning. The results confirmed the space to be a social construct and its tourist exploitation as a dynamic force that, when it ceases, allows for a glimpse of how that same space could be built in a different way, less commercialized and closer to resident user values.

Construction of Evaluation Indicator System of Festival Tourism Activity Effect Based on FAHP Method

Abstract The prevailing research on festival tourism activities remains limited in scope, and the methodologies employed are often flawed, offering little in terms of enhancing operational efficiency for festival tourism operators. This study advances the traditional Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) by incorporating group decision-making to develop a comprehensive evaluation model termed FAHP-FCE. Furthermore, an evaluative index system for assessing the impact of festival tourism activities has been devised, encompassing economic, social, ecological, and cultural dimensions. This framework was applied in a case study conducted in Tourist City A, utilizing a specifically designed questionnaire to gauge the effectiveness of festival tourism activities within the region. The reliability and validity of the questionnaire are substantiated by a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of 0.923 and a Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) value of 0.925, respectively. The resulting impact scores across the evaluated dimensions—economy (3.96), society (2.87), ecological environment (2.16), and culture (2.62)—reveal that the economic benefits are the most substantial. In contrast, the environmental impacts are the most detrimental in City A. This research not only refines the assessment of environmental impacts but also enriches the methodologies and content of festival tourism effect evaluations, thereby offering fresh perspectives and methods for future inquiries.

The balance between traffic control and economic development in tourist cities under the context of COVID-19: A case study of Xi'an, China.

Selecting an appropriate intensity of epidemic prevention and control measures is of vital significance to promoting the two-way dynamic coordination of epidemic prevention and control and economic development. In order to balance epidemic control and economic development and suggest scientific and reasonable traffic control measures, this paper proposes a SEIQR model considering population migration and the propagation characteristics of the exposed and the asymptomatic, based on the data of COVID-19 cases, Baidu Migration, and the tourist economy. Further, the factor traffic control intensity is included in the model. After determining the functional relationship between the control intensity and the number of tourists and the cumulative number of confirmed cases, the NSGA-II algorithm is employed to perform multi-objective optimization with consideration of the requirements for epidemic prevention and control and for economic development to get an appropriate traffic control intensity and suggest scientific traffic control measures. With Xi'an City as an example. The results show that the Pearson correlation coefficient between the predicted data of this improved model and the actual data is 0.996, the R-square in the regression analysis is 0.993, with a significance level of below 0.001, suggesting that the predicted data of the model are more accurate. With the continuous rise of traffic control intensity in different simulation scenarios, the cumulative number of cases decreases by a significant amplitude. While balancing the requirements for epidemic prevention and control and for tourist economy development, the model works out the control intensity to be 0.68, under which some traffic control measures are suggested. The model presented in this paper can be used to analyze the impacts of different traffic control intensities on epidemic transmission. The research results in this paper reveal the traffic control measures balancing the requirements for epidemic prevention and control and for economic development.

Frequency Based Supervisory Power Management Approach for Battery-Supercapacitor Electric Vehicle Considering Road Slope

This article proposes a real time strategy based on frequency separation for energy management of battery/Supercapacitor (SC) based Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) in Electric Vehicle (EV). The performance and life cycle of battery are important parameters in determining the efficiency of EVs. With the aim of improving the effectiveness of battery in battery/SC based EVs, a supervisory Symlets wavelet based Energy Management System (EMS) using Fuzzy Controller (FC) is proposed which considers real time road slope and vehicle condition. Actual road grade values are computed from Contour Positioning System (CPS) using Google Earth software. Symlets wavelet control technique is utilised to separate the high frequency transients from the required load power. After separation of high frequency components, a FC is developed to provide an additional reference power for battery and SC. Then, the high frequency transients along with additional power obtained from FC are allocated to SC and the rest is handled by the battery. Three road slope conditions viz. city tour, downhill and uphill and two drive cycles viz. NYCC and UDDS are applied to examine the capability of proposed EMS. The proposed Fuzzy Symlets Wavelet based controller is observed to improve the battery Ampere hour (Ah) throughput and Root Mean Square (RMS) value of battery current in comparison to only Symlets wavelet based controller for city tour, uphill and downhill journeys. The results indicate the robustness and superiority of the designed Fuzzy Symlets Wavelet based control technique as compared to Symlets Wavelet technique in handling practical conditions and improving vehicle performance.

FROM HERITAGE TOURISM TO SUN AND BEACH DESTINATIONS: THE EXPLANATORY ROLE OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON THE AVERAGE DAILY RATE

Purpose – This study aims to analyse whether the impact of external factors on the average daily rate (ADR) varies according to the type of destination. The study measures the effects of length of stay, share of international tourism and seasonality on hotel rates for sun and beach tourism, city tourism and heritage destinations.. Methodology/Design/Approach –We collected monthly data from January 2021 to June 2023 and conducted a regression analysis to measure how international tourism, length of stay or seasonality differ by destination type and what impact these factors have on ADR. The data refers to the 106 tourist destinations defined by the Spanish Statistics Institute (INE). Findings – Increasing the length of stay has a positive effect on ADR for cultural heritage destinations. In all types of destinations, a higher share of international tourism increases ADR, but the effect is particularly strong for city tourism. Greater seasonality is associated with higher hotel prices and is particularly relevant for sun and beach destinations. Originality of the research –A better understanding of ADR determinants, depending on the different destination types, is important for hotel managers and those designing tourism policies at destination level

The influence of tourists' emotional experiences on destination loyalty from the perspective of community economy

AbstractCommunity research has been a significant topic in various fields over time. This study (a) constructs a structural equation model for hypothetical community relationships between six factors: tourist interaction, positive emotional experience, general emotional experience, tourists' subjective well‐being, tourist satisfaction, and tourist destination loyalty, and (b) examines the impact of tourists' emotional experiences on their destination loyalty by taking community members as the main survey objects. The results show that tourist emotional experiences have a positive impact on tourists' loyalty. Finally, taking Guilin's evolution into a world‐class tourism city as an example, we propose suggestions on the development of community tourism.

ÇEVRE KORUMA NOKTASINDA BELEDİYELER: KIRIKKALE BELEDİYESİ - AMASYA BELEDİYESİ ÖRNEKLEMİNDE

With the increase in environmental problems, concerns about protecting the fundamental value of the environment have also increased. Environmental protection measures are essential to ensure environmental sustainability. The study aims to emphasise this concern in the case of a provincial municipality and to provide recommendations in this context. In this study, the literature review was firstly conducted, followed by an examination of a local government with major duties and responsibilities in the field of environmental protection, and the environmental protection activities carried out between 2020 and 2024, which were obtained from the websites of Kırıkkale, an industrial city, and Amasya, a tourism city, selected as samples, were analysed comparatively with the content analysis research method, and implications were made.The findings of the study indicate that Kırıkkale municipality initiated and finalised important projects on environmental problems such as water, waste, and green areas in order to protect the environment between 2020-2024. Amasya municipality, on the other hand, focused on projects on water, wastes and green environment. The fact that the efforts made by Kırıkkale Municipality in terms of environmental protection have been performed on water and waste, which are the most troublesome issues for the people of Kırıkkale, is significant in terms of meeting the needs of the local people. In particular, the project that enables the public to comfortably utilise tap water is valuable in the sense that the public has access to local needs. In addition to similar projects with Kırıkkale municipality, such as water and waste, it is seen that Amasya municipality is more oriented towards projects to increase the green environment, especially in its works for special children, disabled and elderly individuals. Nevertheless, ensuring the continuity of urban and environmental services in accordance with the principle of continuity in service, even if the municipal administration changes, is of great importance. At this point, especially continuation of the ongoing projects in these municipalities, even if the municipal administrations change hands, plays an important role in terms of continuity in service.

Сучасні виклики та перспективи розвитку міського туризму в Україні у повоєнний період

The article is aimed at identifying the peculiarities of urban tourism functioning and the main challenges caused by the full-scale war in Ukraine. The relevance of the study is stipulated by the need to understand the main transformational changes in tourism in Ukraine during the war and in the post-war period. The purpose of the study is to analyse the prospects for the development of urban tourism and the main challenges caused by military operations in Ukraine. In order to achieve this goal, we will focus on two key tasks: analyzing the problems caused by Russia's military aggression against Ukraine and identifying the main challenges faced by urban tourism in Ukraine, both during the war and in the post-war period. Despite the difficult situation in the country, it has been established that urban tourism continues to function in relatively safe cities. In addition to rather small domestic tourism, "non-traditional" inbound tourism has begun to develop in the form of visits by delegations of representatives of governments, international organisations, NGOs, volunteers, and military journalists. The study found that the main challenges of today are due to the need to strengthen security measures, take into account the availability of bomb shelters and shelters when visiting cities, and organize excursions. In this regard, there is a growing need to find ways to transform the tourist offer, increase the use of Internet technologies in the tourism sector and develop new approaches to promoting the tourist offer of urban tourism. One of the key tasks today and in the future is to develop adaptive and inclusive tourism in Ukrainian cities.
