Fuel Wastage Analysis and Sustainable Transport Planning in Surat's Metropolitan Corridors

Urbanization is the outcome of social and economic developments that lead to urban concentration and growth of large cities, changes in land use, and travel pattern in metropolitan city. The socio-economic behavior also changes and leads to phenomenal growth of private vehicles which resulted in drastic changes in traffic as well as travel characteristics. This heavy growth of traffic will worsen transport scenario, which needs sustainable transport planning. The research work studies the travel behavior of people in metropolitan Surat City. For the present study field surveys are done to analyze wastage of fuel at a congested corridor of Surat city. For residential zone surveys adopted are Traffic Volume Count to get the peak hour. To study various other aspects of fuel consumption, analysis was done during the peak hours by finding the idling of vehicles at a junction. Based on the above studies, it is been found that use of private vehicles is high as compared to public transport due to which planning refines the travel pattern and effects the environment. Improving Young People's Leadership Skills through Emotional Intelligence

This study examines the relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Leadership in Young Adults. A sample of 86 Young Adults residing in Surat city, 48 females and 39 males was collected using convenience sampling. Data was collected using, Standardized Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire – Short Form (TEIQue – SF) and Leadership Practice Inventory. It has been hypothesized that a statistically significant relationship between level of Emotional Intelligence and leadership in Young Adults. The statistical tool used to analyse the data was Correlation and Descriptive Statistics. Data analysis through correlation indicated relationship between level of Emotional Intelligence and Leadership.

Effectiveness of website-based education program on activities of daily living and fear of falls among sub-acute stroke survivors: a pilot study in South Gujarat Region of India

BackgroundStroke survivors and their caregivers have numerous and diverse educational needs, many of which are unmet because of inadequate training from healthcare professionals. As stroke recovery and rehabilitation can continue for years post-stroke, it is critical that stroke survivors are provided with and have access to a range of support options and evidence-based information. Website-based education programs (WEP) have been adopted in recent years to manage health problems. The present pilot study aims to evaluate the effect of WEP on activities of daily living (ADLs) and the fear of falls among sub-acute stroke survivors.MethodsA total of 16 eligible post-stroke survivors were recruited from multiple study settings across Surat City of Gujarat state in western India and were randomly assigned using a lottery method to either the experimental group (n = 8) receiving WEP or the control group (n = 8) receiving conventional physiotherapy for 4 weeks. Outcome measures were the Indian Stroke Scale (ISS), Modified Barthel Index (MBI), and Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I).ResultsBoth groups showed statistically significant improvements in all outcomes but the experimental group showed more significant improvements in ADLs and fear of falls among sub-acute stroke survivors (p < 0.05).ConclusionWEP for sub-acute stroke survivors is an effective intervention. It improves the performance of ADLs for stroke survivors and helps in better fall management indicating that web-based education programs shall be implemented on a regular basis to improve patient care.

Surat’s sustainable future: analyzing compact urban development and population density trends

Rapid urbanization is a challenge for the cities of developing countries like India. The share of an urban area is rapidly increasing in dynamically growing cities. Due to this, the land use is altered, causing sprawl and unplanned development. The consumption of resources is greater, and the impact on the surroundings is negative. The compact city concept is always more efficient and cost effective compared to unplanned organic growth. The compact city optimizes available land resources with its maximum possible capacity in accordance with other available natural resources. The primary study objective is to assess the growth trend of Surat city using satellite images, geographic information system techniques, and census data for the last few years. The analysis considers population density for different city wards from 1991 to 2020. Based on the land use land cover change carried out using the maximum likelihood method from the satellite images, the rate of spreading out, its direction, and causes are also found. In this study, population density is a crucial attribute of the compact city concept. The study shows that wardwise density is increasing in a specific direction and making that portion of the city a dense, compact development. This is observed in ward numbers 48, 42, and 35 in the east, north, and southeast directions from Central Business District, respectively. The average population density in persons per sq. km is continuously increasing from 5006 to 20329 at city level which also shows the compact city development for Surat. The governing authorities must incorporate the compact city concept into the planning policy for sustainable urban development. By this, policymakers can understand housing needs to promote affordable housing, invest in infrastructure development and public services, and identify areas where sustainable transportation options, such as public transit, walking, or cycling, need improvement.

Composite Accessibility Index: A Novel and Holistic Measure for Evaluating Transit Accessibility

The accessibility of public transport is a vital factor for the overall success of transit operations. It determines whether people choose to use and rely on public transport by assessing the ease of accessing opportunities. Accessibility, as a measure of the system’s performance, encompasses various travel segments and can be evaluated from different perspectives. Evaluating transit accessibility in data-constrained environments, particularly in developing countries, requires an optimal framework. The present study proposed a framework by modifying available accessibility measurement indices and trying to encompass all affecting variables in a single composite index. The integrated transit system comprising the bus rapid transit system and city bus in Surat city, India, is selected to demonstrate the proposed framework. The results of the ranked-based correlation coefficient test exhibit the comprehensive assessment capabilities of the proposed composite index in evaluating transit performance. Surat city’s transit network shows better coverage based on the gravity model theory, that is, moderate performance in local coverage offered capacity per population. However, it exhibits poor accessibility with respect to reaching destinations, resulting in below-average transit accessibility. Except for the city center and eastern part, 65% of the city area experiences inadequate accessibility of public transport. These findings align with the city’s low transit mode share of 2.5% and stagnant daily ridership of 0.25–0.28 million passengers in the last half decade. The composite index map serves as a planning tool for optimizing the utilization of available resources and guiding future policy implementations.

Evaluating urban population carrying capacity of Surat: probability-satisfaction approach

With around 36% of urbanisation, Indian cities are becoming saturated because of increased migration. This results in excessive utilisation of natural resources and physical infrastructure. Given its limited resources and infrastructure, it is important to evaluate an urban area’s true population carrying capacity. It helps planners and policymakers in managing cities better. This paper shows an estimation of the urban population carrying capacity of Surat City using the probability-satisfaction method with the help of factors like water treatment, solid waste management, employment, and hospital beds, which cover physical as well as social factors. Analysis shows the population carrying capacity of Surat City at different probability-satisfaction levels and compares it with the current scenario. Some important results are that when the probability-satisfaction level changes from acceptable to ideal level, Surat City’s health infrastructure has a maximum population carrying capacity of 112.1 to 102.2 million simultaneously and solid waste management has the lowest population carrying capacity, which is 4.7 to 3.9 million simultaneously. Also, it is observed that factors such as healthcare, wastewater treatment, and green area show less rigidness, while factors such as wastewater treatment, road area, and electricity show more rigidness in increasing carrying capacity.

Adoption of Improved Buffalo Husbandry Practices in Peri-Urban Areas of Surat City, Gujarat

The present study was carried out in the peri urban areas of Surat city of Gujarat to find out the adoption of improved buffalo husbandry practices. A random sample of 50 buffalo farm owners were selected and interviewed for the interview schedule prepared about adoption of improved dairy husbandry practices in six major aspects of housing, feeding, breeding, health care, milking and calf rearing management was studied. Housing in separate located place (100%), providing proper floor space (98%) and proper height and ventilation (90%) were more adopted in housing practices. Provision of clean and fresh drinking water (100%), feeding extra ration to advance pregnant animals (64%) and feeding balance concentrate mixture on the basis of milk production (64%) were more adopted in feeding management. In adoption of breeding management, keeping watch on oestrus cycle and heat symptoms of animals (100%), artificial insemination of animals (100%) and practicing pregnancy diagnosis between 60-90 days after service (91%) were more adopted by buffalo owners. Observing animals daily for signs of sickness (100%), timely and regularly vaccination (100%) and treatment of reproductive disorders (75%) were more adopted by respondents in health care management practices. In milking and calf rearing practices, washing pails and hands before milking (100%) and regularity in milking time (100%), early solid feeding (100%) and milk feeding to calves up to three months of age (96%) were more adopted by the buffalo owners.

A Study to Measure Patients' Trust in Medical Practitioners in Surat City

Purpose- This study examines the critical role of trust in the doctor-patient relationship within the healthcare system. Trust acts as a pivotal element that enhances collaboration and communication, thereby improving patient outcomes. Defined as the subjective confidence in the reliability and integrity of healthcare providers, trust encompasses fidelity, competency, honesty, confidentiality, and overall reliability. The primary aim of the study is to examines the critical role of trust in doctor-patient relationship within the healthcare system and evaluate the factors influencing patients' trust in their medical practitioners. Research Design – This quantitative study employed an online survey administered via Google Forms to collect data from 646 patients. The survey assessed patients' understanding of trust in their healthcare providers, focusing on factors such as technical competence, empathy, reliability, and expertise. Statistical analyses including correlation, exploratory factor analysis, and Kruskal-Wallis tests were conducted to examine differences in trust perceptions across age groups and educational levels. Findings – The study revealed significant differences in how age groups of patients’ impact technical competence, patience, understanding of social and economic conditions, adherence to instructions, confidentiality, trust despite mistakes, respect, access to technologies, recommendations for healthcare, dependability, and approachability. Educational qualifications also significantly influenced perceptions of healthcare provider trust across several factors except for the provision of information. The findings underscore the importance of tailoring communication and care strategies based on patients' age and educational backgrounds to enhance trust and satisfaction in healthcare settings. Understanding these demographic variations can inform healthcare providers in developing patient-centred approaches that foster trust and improve healthcare outcomes.

Study of Adoption Level of Improved Buffalo Husbandry Practices in Peri-Urban Areas of Surat City of Gujarat, India

The present study was conducted in the peri urban areas of Surat city of Gujarat. Total fifty buffalo farm owners were randomly selected and interviewed for the questionnaire prepared about improved buffalo husbandry practices adopted by them. The findings indicated that majority of buffalo farm owners had medium adoption level on different component of improved buffalo husbandry practices viz. 72% for housing, 74% for feeding, 64% for breeding, 68% for healthcare, 74% for milking management and 74% for calf rearing. The overall adoption levels of the respondents in improved buffalo husbandry practices fall under low, medium and high categories are 18%, 66% and 16%, respectively. The adoption index of different aspect of improved buffalo husbandry practices of housing, feeding, breeding, health care, milking and calf rearing were 49.4, 34.3, 67, 52.5, 55.9 and 63.7%, respectively and overall adoption index of improved buffalo husbandry practices was 53.8% which indicated moderate adoption level of buffalo farm owners in the study area.

Integrating dynamic modeling and decision support systems for sustainable urban planning in a changing climate

ABSTRACT The study introduces the Ant Lion Recurrent Climate Estimation (ALRCE) model for precise climate forecasting, emphasizing critical parameters like rainfall, humidity, temperature, wind speed, and dew point. Its primary goal is to mitigate natural hazard risks stemming from sudden climate shifts. Data from Surat city, Gujarat, including these features, is meticulously processed to train the ALRCE model. It employs an ant lion fitness function for analysis, particularly predicting rainfall and drought rates. Implemented in MATLAB, it demonstrates superior precision, accuracy, and risk reduction, validated for future climatic predictions from 2025 to 2050. Comparative analysis with existing techniques shows ALRCE outperforms, achieving 96.5% accuracy, 98% precision, 0.18838 RMSE, and 0.63 correlation coefficient. The study enhances accuracy by 2% post-optimization, highlighting ALRCE’s potential to significantly improve climate prediction and mitigate risks associated with abrupt climate changes.

Impact of COVID-19 on Profession and Health of Female Sex Workers: Apprehension, Acquiescence, and Resilience.

In Surat city of Gujarat, India, female sex workers (FSW)-based targeted interventions (TI) and community-based organizations (CBO) have been functioning since 1998. To document the impact of the COVID-19 lockdown (March-May 2020) on FSWs and STI/RTI/HIV preventive measures provided through TI/CBOs in Surat city, sequential, explanatory mixed-methods design was used. We conducted a desk review of quarterly programmatic data (2018-2020) of four TIs and CBOs and interviewed of 221 FSWs to study pre- and post-lockdown socioeconomic conditions, engagement in sex work, health services during COVID-19 lockdown and coping strategies, followed by five focus group discussions of FSWs and TI/CBO project staff. Study identified four major themes: reasons for working as a FSW during COVID-19 lockdown, entry to sex work during or as a consequence of lockdown, exploitation of FSWs during lockdown, and challenges of TI and CBOs in service provision in pandemic situation. Number of new registrations and STI/RTI detection increased immediately after lockdown. TI/CBO and other NGOs working for women welfare must build financial independence by training them in microeconomics, savings, and entrepreneurship. TI/CBO staff must also include experts in finance or business, trained in emergency response. The presence of strong TI/CBO network facilitated prompt delivery of essential commodities and financial aid to FSWs. However, laboratory and screening services were hampered, which warrants need of introducing self-test kits. In backdrop of decrease in condom distribution, continuation of sex work during lockdown and disruption of routine HIV/STI/RTI screening facilities, our study also recommends intensified HIV/STI/RTI screening among FSWs.

Spanning care and comfort: examining Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana's role in enhancing well-being of individuals in South Gujarat

PurposeThis study aims to delve into the impact of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) on the well-being and quality of life of beneficiaries in Surat City of India. Employing correlation and regression analyses, the study uncovers significant correlations between Awareness, Healthcare Utilisation, and Financial Burden Reduction with well-being outcomes.Design/methodology/approachThe investigation employs a structured questionnaire to gather data from 250 beneficiaries, exploring the relationships between Awareness, Healthcare Utilisation, Financial Burden Reduction, Well-Being and quality of Life. The data was collected using a structured questionnaire using a survey method.FindingsThe results highlighted the crucial role of Awareness in empowering beneficiaries to make informed healthcare decisions, positively influencing their well-being. Furthermore, the study underscores how active engagement with PMJAY's healthcare services enhances well-being. The mitigation of financial burdens emerges as a pivotal factor, signifying the program's efficacy in improving beneficiaries' quality of life.Originality/valueThe comprehensive model presented in this study reveals that PMJAY's multifaceted approach is pivotal in promoting enhanced well-being and quality of life among beneficiaries. These findings affect public health policies seeking to create holistic interventions that holistically address vulnerable populations' healthcare access, financial burdens, and overall well-being.

Assessing environmental impacts of a textile company using life cycle assessment approach-a case study.

The textile industry is known for its significant environmental impact, and as such, there is a growing need to assess the industry's production practices. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an effective tool for measuring the environmental impact of textile products from raw material production to end-of-life disposal. Surat city, known as textile hub of India, has multiple industrial clusters that play host to different elements of the textile value chain. This research aims to evaluate the environmental performance of a Surat-based textile company. The study involves the collection of data from textile manufacturing facilities, including gray cloth production and wet processes (gate-to-gate approach). The data collected has been analyzed using the GABI (9.2.1 version) software. The study provides potential environmental impact data on present textile technology and production situation. Significant hotspots have been determined throughout supply chain and the associated drivers identified. However, the industry's environmental impact can be reduced by practicing ecoefficiency, immaterialization, and recycling textile waste. This research highlights the importance of LCA in identifying the environmental impact of the textile industry and provides a basis for developing sustainable practices to minimize the industry's environmental impact.
