The two eyespots of larvalMulticotyle purvisi lie on the posterior of the brain dorsal to the pharynx. Each ocellus consists of one pigment cell and two rhabdomeres, one in the antero-lateral and one in the postero-lateral part of the pigment cup. Each rhabdomere comprises two bundles of microvilli diverging from a central dendritic mass that is connected by a narrow connection lined by dense material along the cell membrane to a perikaryon outside the ocellus. Many cross-striated microfibrils (possibly ciliary rootlets) are scattered at the bases of the rhabdomeres. Microvilli of the rhabdomeres consist of a central tubular zone lined by dense granules and an outer light, homogeneous zone. Phylogenetic implications and possible functions of the photoreceptors are discussed.
