Poster Session II: Attentional modulation of the achromatic and chromatic reversal VEP.

Previous literature has consistently revealed attentional modulation of the Visual Evoked Potential (VEP) response to achromatic pattern reversal stimuli but little to no attentional modulation of the VEP response to chromatic pattern onsets. Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) research, however, has reported modulation of the responses to both achromatic and chromatic pattern reversal stimuli. Numerous methodological differences including mode of presentation, stimulus contrast, and attentional demand, make comparison of these results difficult. In this study, we report the results of experiments using comparable perceptual contrasts, pattern reversals, and a coextensive and highly-demanding, multiple object tracking (MOT) task. Our findings support prior VEP results indicating that although achromatic VEPs are modulated by attention, chromatic VEPs are more robust to attentional modulation, even for highly demanding distractor tasks. We also found that when compared to a non-attentional condition, the attenuation of the VEP when attending to the MOT task was greater in magnitude than the enhancement of the VEP when attending to the VEP stimulus. This supports prior conclusions, that while avoiding active distraction is likely important, insuring an "attentive state" is not always necessary when recording VEPs. Further experiments are underway to investigate why attentional modulation of chromatic signals in early visual cortex are observed in MRI but not VEP recordings.

Poster Session II: Alternating orientation of the chromatic pattern VEP improves signal even in the absence of contrast adaptation.

The visual evoked potential (VEP) to chromatic pattern reversal is greatly reduced compared to VEPs to pattern onsets. Chromatic pattern onsets produce large and stereotypical waveforms that reliably differ from standard achromatic pattern reversal VEP waveforms used in clinical applications. Rapid contrast adaptation for sustained chromatic but not transient achromatic mechanisms has been suggested as one explanation for these observations. Here we first examined changes in the magnitude of response during recordings to reversing and onset grating patterns that preferentially modulate the L-M, S, and achromatic pathways. Given the evidence for both chromatic and achromatic orientation-selective mechanisms, we then hypothesized that contrast adaptation may be reduced by changing the orientation of the pattern for each reversal or onset. VEPs were recorded for 60 s with 2 onsets/reversals per second using both fixed and alternating (horizontal/vertical) orientations. FFT amplitudes for 6-second windows did not reveal evidence of adaptation for chromatic or achromatic onsets or reversal patterns over the 60-second recording period. Despite this, alternating pattern orientation increased the signal for all chromatic but not achromatic conditions. Although alternating the orientation for reversals increased the signal, the onset responses were still larger, even for non-alternating orientations. Mechanisms other than contrast adaptation must be invoked to explain the results.

Intraoperative Neuromonitoring of the Visual Pathway in Asleep Neuro-Oncology Surgery.

Brain tumour surgery in visual eloquent areas poses significant challenges to neurosurgeons and has reported inconsistent results. This is a single-centre prospective cohort study of patients admitted for asleep surgery of intra-axial lesions in visual eloquent areas. Demographic and clinical information, data from tractography and visual evoked potentials (VEPs) monitoring were recorded and correlated with visual outcomes. Thirty-nine patients were included (20 females, 19 males; mean age 52.51 ± 14.08 years). Diffuse intrinsic glioma was noted in 61.54% of patients. There was even distribution between the temporal, occipital and parietal lobes, while 55.26% were right hemispheric lesions. Postoperatively, 74.4% remained stable in terms of visual function, 23.1% deteriorated and 2.6% improved. The tumour infiltration of the optic radiation on tractography was significantly related to the visual field deficit after surgery (p = 0.016). Higher N75 (p = 0.036) and P100 (p = 0.023) amplitudes at closure on direct cortical VEP recordings were associated with no new postoperative visual deficit. A threshold of 40% deterioration of the N75 (p = 0.035) and P100 (p = 0.020) amplitudes correlated with a risk of visual field deterioration. To conclude, direct cortical VEP recordings demonstrated a strong correlation with visual outcomes, contrary to transcranial recordings. Invasion of the optic radiation is related to worse visual field outcomes.

Assessment of the uniform field electroretinogram for mouse retinal ganglion cell functional analysis.

The uniform field electroretinogram (UF-ERG) has been suggested as an alternative to the pattern electroretinogram (PERG) for non-invasive assessment of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) function in primates. We evaluated the validity of the UF-ERG to assess mouse RGC activity in vivo. Unilateral optic nerve crush (ONC) was performed on adult C57BL/6J mice. Contralateral eyes with uncrushed optic nerves and eyes from surgically naive mice served as experimental controls. Electrophysiological visual assessment was performed at 12weeks post-ONC. Flash-mediated visual-evoked cortical potentials (VEPs) were measured to confirm the robustness of the ONC procedure. Full-field flash ERGs were used to interrogate photoreceptor and retinal bipolar cell function. RGC function was assessed with pattern ERGs. Summed onset and offset UF-ERG responses to alternating dark and light uniform field flash stimuli of different intensities and wavelengths were recorded from ONC and control eyes, and relative differences were compared to the PERG results. Following electrophysiological analysis, RGC loss was monitored by immunohistochemical staining of the RGC marker protein, RBPMS, in post-mortem retinal tissues. ONC dramatically impacts RGC integrity and optic nerve function, demonstrated by reduced RGC counts and near complete elimination of VEPs. ONC did not affect scotopic ERG a-wave and b-wave amplitudes, while PERG amplitudes of eyes subjected to ONC were reduced by approximately 50% compared to controls. Summation of ON and OFF UF-ERG responses did not reveal statistically significant differences between ONC and control eyes, regardless of visual stimulus. PERG responses are markedly impaired upon ONC, while UF-ERG responses are not significantly affected by surgical trauma to RGC axons in mice. The more closely related pattern and uniform field ERGs recorded in primates suggests species-specific differences in RGC features or subpopulations corresponding to PERG and UF-ERG response generators, limiting the utility of the UF-ERG for mouse RGC functional analysis.

Contributed Session II: Attentional Modulation of Early Cortical Chromatic Responses

Prior research demonstrates that attention can modulate the amplitude of achromatic (black and white) pattern reversal stimuli. Similarly, MRI research has shown attentional modulation of BOLD responses to both chromatic and achromatic stimuli. However, prior research has also demonstrated that the chromatic onset visual evoked potential (VEP) is robust to attentional modulation (e.g., Highsmith & Crognale, 2010; Wang & Wade, 2011) with either spatially contiguous or spatially disparate manipulations. It is possible that more demanding attentional tasks than those that have been used previously, may reveal attentional modulation of the chromatic VEP. Here we report the results of experiments in which we recorded chromatic and achromatic VEPs while subjects performed multiple object tracking (MOT) tasks with several levels of difficulty. Steady-state onset responses were recorded at 3hz for stimuli modulated along the chromatic and achromatic axes. Our preliminary results suggest that the increased attentional demand provided by MOT can reveal a clear, but idiosyncratic modulation of chromatic VEP responses. The question remains whether or not chromatic and achromatic mechanisms share similar attentional gain processes as reflected in the VEP. We are currently characterizing the nature of these attentional gain mechanisms.

Functional Activity of the Retina and Visual Evoked Cortical Potentials in Simulation the Factors of Space Flight in Conditions of Four Month Isolation in a Hermetic Object with Artificial Habitat

Background. The artificial environment of confined space causes a decrease in the functional reserve of the central nervous system and can affect human health and the success of space missions. In solving this problem, the urgent task is to study adaptation mechanisms that adapt the functioning of the visual sensory system to the conditions of the extreme environment. Purpose to obtain new objective data on the alterations in the functional activity of the visual system during prolonged stay of a person in extreme environmental conditions. Methods. Before and after a 4-month isolation experiment simulating a flight to the moon, an electrophysiological study was conducted of six practically healthy crew members with registration of a set of electroretinograms (ERG) and pattern-reversal visual evoked cortical potentials (VEP) according to the ISCEV standards. In dynamics, corrected monocular visual acuity (MVA) was assessed on board. Results. After the end of the experiment, on average for the group, there were no statistically significant changes in the MVA and functional activity of the retina and visual cortex compared with the initial data. However, individual changes on the part of the flicker ERG and reduction of VEP to small patterns stimulating the parvocellular channel of the visual system were revealed in three testers. These changes were associated with higher visually intense work and physical activity of these crew members, and with an individual reaction to sleep deprivation of pilots with increased responsibility. Conclusion. Four-month isolation with imitation of a space mission did not cause significant changes in the functional activity of the retina and visual pathways in healthy crew members. Individual differences of VEP-responses of the parvocellular visual system were revealed, which can reflect a high level of psychophysiological adaptation and stress resistance in physically active crew members.

Alleviation of extensive visual pathway dysfunction by a remyelinating drug in a chronic mouse model of multiple sclerosis.

Visual deficits are among the most prevalent symptoms in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). To understand deficits in the visual pathway during MS and potential treatment effects, we used experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), the most commonly used animal model of MS. The afferent visual pathway was assessed in vivo using optical coherence tomography (OCT), electroretinography (ERG), and visually evoked cortical potentials (VEPs). Inflammation, demyelination, and neurodegeneration were examined by immunohistochemistry ex vivo. In addition, an immunomodulatory, remyelinating agent, the estrogen receptor β ligand chloroindazole (IndCl), was tested for its therapeutic potential in the visual pathway. EAE produced functional deficits in visual system electrophysiology, including suppression of ERG and VEP waveform amplitudes and increased signal latencies. Therapeutic IndCl rescued overall visual system latency by VEP but had little impact on amplitude or ERG findings relative to vehicle. Faster VEP conduction in IndCl‐treated mice was associated with enhanced myelin basic protein signal in all visual system structures examined. IndCl preserved retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and oligodendrocyte density in the prechiasmatic white matter, but similar retinal nerve fiber layer thinning by OCT was noted in vehicle and IndCl‐treated mice. Although IndCl differentially attenuated leukocyte and astrocyte staining signal throughout the structures analyzed, axolemmal varicosities were observed in all visual fiber tracts of mice with EAE irrespective of treatment, suggesting impaired axonal energy homeostasis. These data support incomplete functional recovery of VEP amplitude with IndCl, as fiber tracts displayed persistent axon pathology despite remyelination‐induced decreases in latencies, evidenced by reduced optic nerve g‐ratio in IndCl‐treated mice. Although additional studies are required, these findings demonstrate the dynamics of visual pathway dysfunction and disability during EAE, along with the importance of early treatment to mitigate EAE‐induced axon damage.

Cortical Neuroplasticity and Cognitive Function in Early-Stage, Mild-Moderate Hearing Loss: Evidence of Neurocognitive Benefit From Hearing Aid Use.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is associated with cognitive decline as well as structural and functional brain changes. However, the mechanisms underlying neurocognitive deficits in ARHL are poorly understood and it is unclear whether clinical treatment with hearing aids may modify neurocognitive outcomes. To address these topics, cortical visual evoked potentials (CVEPs), cognitive function, and speech perception abilities were measured in 28 adults with untreated, mild-moderate ARHL and 13 age-matched normal hearing (NH) controls. The group of adults with ARHL were then fit with bilateral hearing aids and re-evaluated after 6 months of amplification use. At baseline, the ARHL group exhibited more extensive recruitment of auditory, frontal, and pre-frontal cortices during a visual motion processing task, providing evidence of cross-modal re-organization and compensatory cortical neuroplasticity. Further, more extensive cross-modal recruitment of the right auditory cortex was associated with greater degree of hearing loss, poorer speech perception in noise, and worse cognitive function. Following clinical treatment with hearing aids, a reversal in cross-modal re-organization of auditory cortex by vision was observed in the ARHL group, coinciding with gains in speech perception and cognitive performance. Thus, beyond the known benefits of hearing aid use on communication, outcomes from this study provide evidence that clinical intervention with well-fit amplification may promote more typical cortical organization and functioning and provide cognitive benefit.

Pattern‐stimulation in the complex management of patients with operated retinal detachment

AbstractIntroductionThe problem of increasing visual function after surgical treatment of retinal detachment retains its relevance. Existing methods do not take into account the possibilities of the retinal‐cortex system stimulation.ObjectiveEvaluation of the functional effect of pattern‐stimulation in the complex management of retinal detachment operated patients.Patients and methodsForty patients with an extrascleral retinal procedure. The median of age is 53.6 [23; 75] years. Patients in group 1a (10 eyes with macula‐on before surgery) and 1b group (with macula‐off before surgery) underwent a course of drug therapy (peptides, meldonium, antioxidants), patients of group 2a (10 eyes macula‐on before surgery) and 2b Groups (macula‐off before surgery) – a similar course of drug treatment combined with a pattern‐stimulation course. All groups are comparable in age, sex, visual acuity, data of electrophysiological studies – macular electroretinogram (ERG), visual evoked cortical potentials (VECP). According to the results of optical coherent tomography carried out before the start of treatment, there were no gross organic changes in the area of the macula in patients. Starting treatment 6 months after surgery. Evaluation of the treatment effectiveness after 3 months after its completion.ResultsIncreased visual acuity after treatment in group Ia occurred at 0.05, in group Ib by 0.03, in group IIa by 0.17, in group IIb by 0.21. The amplitude of wave‐a of macular ERG increased by 4.07 mV in group Ia, by 5.4 mV in group Ib, by 2.9 mV in group IIa, by 8.17 mV in group IIb; changes in wave amplitude‐in different directions: in group Ia, an increase of 3.5 mV, in group Ib a decrease of 0.4 mV, in group IIa and IIb an increase of 5.19 mV and 10.86 mV, respectively. VECP N 75 latency decreased by group Ia by 1.46 ms, by group 19.2 ms by group IIa, by 14.94 ms by group IIb, and increased by 1.1 ms by group Ib; P100 decrease in groups: Ia by 0.93 ms, IIa by 14.39 ms, IIb by 14.94 ms, increase in group Ib by 1.2 ms; the amplitude of the N75‐P100 VECP wave increased in all groups: Ia by 1.3 mV, Ib by 1.55 mV, IIa by 3.48 mV, IIb by 10.58 mV. An increase in visual acuity on the background of drug treatment correlated with an improvement in the amplitude characteristics of the local ERG (r = 0.47), using pattern stimulation with an increase in the amplitude characteristics of the VECP (r = 0.46).ConclusionUsing the stimulation pattern in complex management of the retinal detachment operated patients helps to improve the amplitude indices of local ERG and VECP by more than three times, reducing VECP latency values, increasing visual acuity 4 times in comparison with the routine drug therapy results in patients 1a and 1b groups. The results obtained indicate the feasibility of using the method of pattern‐stimulation in patients with operated retinal detachment to enhance the functional effect of surgical treatment.

Spatial frequency selectivity of the human visual cortex estimated with pseudo-random visual evoked cortical potential (VECP)

Single-cell recordings in the primary visual cortex (V1) show neurons with spatial frequency (SF) tuning, which had different responses to chromatic and luminance stimuli. Visually evoked cortical potential (VECP) investigations have reported different spatial profiles. The current study aimed to investigate the spatial selectivity of V1 to simultaneous stimulus of chromatic and luminance contrasts. Compound stimuli temporally driven by m-sequences at 8 SFs were utilized to generate VECP records from thirty subjects (14 trichromats and 16 colorblind subjects). We extracted the second-order kernel, first and second slices (K2.1 and K2.2, respectively). Optimal SF, SF bandwidth, and high SF cut-off were estimated from the best-fitted functions to the VECP amplitude vs SF. For trichromats, K2.1 waveforms had a negative component (N1 K2.1) at 100 ms followed by a positive component (P1 K2.1). K2.2 waveforms also had a negative component (N1 K2.2) at 100 ms followed by a positive deflection (P1 K2.2). SF tuning of N1 K2.1 and N1 K2.2 had a band-pass profile, while the P1 K2.1 was low-pass tuned. P1 K2.1 optimal SF differed significantly from both other negative responses and from P1 K2.2. We found differences in the optimal SF, SF tuning and high SF cut-off among the VECP components. Dichromats had little or no response for all stimulus conditions. The absence of the responses in dichromats, the similarity between the high SF cut-off of the pseudorandom VECPs and psychophysical chromatic visual acuity, and presence of multiple SF tunings suggested that pseudorandom VECPs represented the activity of cells that responded preferentially to the chromatic component of the compound stimuli.

Stimulus-specific Cortical Visual Evoked Potential Morphological Patterns.

This paper presents a methodology for the recording and analysis of cortical visual evoked potentials (CVEPs) in response to various visual stimuli using 128-channel high-density electroencephalography (EEG). The specific aim of the described stimuli and analyses is to examine whether it is feasible to replicate previously reported CVEP morphological patterns elicited by an apparent motion stimulus, designed to simultaneously stimulate both ventral and dorsal central visual networks, using object and motion stimuli designed to separately stimulate ventral and dorsal visual cortical networks. Four visual paradigms are presented: 1. Randomized visual objects with consistent temporal presentation. 2. Randomized visual objects with inconsistent temporal presentation (or jitter). 3. Visual motion via a radial field of coherent central dot motion without jitter. 4. Visual motion via a radial field of coherent central dot motion with jitter. These four paradigms are presented in a pseudo-randomized order for each participant. Jitter is introduced in order to view how possible anticipatory-related effects may affect the morphology of the object-onset and motion-onset CVEP response. EEG data analyses are described in detail, including steps of data exportation from and importation to signal processing platforms, bad channel identificationand removal, artifact rejection, averaging, and categorization of average CVEP morphological pattern type based upon latency ranges of component peaks. Representative data show that the methodological approach is indeed sensitive in eliciting differential object-onset and motion-onset CVEP morphological patterns and may, therefore, be useful in addressing the larger research aim. Given the high temporal resolution of EEG and the possible application of high-density EEG in source localization analyses, this protocol is ideal for the investigation of distinct CVEP morphological patterns and the underlying neural mechanisms which generate these differential responses.

Age Related Decline in Cortical Multifocal Flash VEP: Latency Increases Shown to Be Predominately Magnocellular.

As the visual system ages, flicker sensitivity decreases and the latencies of cortical visual evoked potentials (VEP) increase. However, the extent to which these effects reflect age-related changes in the magnocellular (M) and or parvocellular (P) pathways remain unclear. Here, we investigated the relation between flicker fusion frequencies and VEP non-linearities induced by rapid stimulation, as a function of age over 6 decades. The approach, using Wiener kernel analysis of multifocal flash (mf)VEP, allows the extraction of signatures of both M and P processing and hence establishing a neural basis of the known decline in flicker fusion threshold. We predicted that, in a sample of 86 participants, age would be associated with a latency increase in early mfVEP response components and that flicker fusion thresholds, for both low and high contrast stimuli, would relate to the temporal efficiency of the M-generated VEP component amplitudes. As expected, flicker fusion frequency reduced with age, while latencies of early second order peaks of the mfVEP increased with age, but M temporal efficiency (amplitude ratio of first to second order peaks) was not strongly age-related. The steepest increases in latency were associated with the M dominated K2.1 (second order first slice) N70 components recorded at low and high contrast (6.7 and 5.9 ms/decade, respectively). Interestingly, significant age-related latency shifts were not observed in the first order responses. Significant decreases in amplitude were found in multiple first and second order components up to 30 years of age, after which they remained relatively constant. Thus, aging and decline in visual function appears to be most closely related to the response latencies of non-linearities generated by the M pathway.

Visual evoked cortical potential elicited by pseudoisochromatic stimulus.

Visual evoked cortical potentials (VECPs) are useful for investigating the mechanisms and dysfunctions of color vision. Chromatic sinusoidal gratings are generally used to elicit VECPs, but they require long psychophysical measurements to match the perceptual luminance between their stripes. An alternative method is to use pseudoisochromatic stimuli, which makes use of luminance noise to mask luminance clues and force the target perception to be dependent on chromatic contrast. In this study, we compared VECPs generated by sinusoidal gratings and pseudoisochromatic gratings. Contrary to chromatic sinusoidal gratings, pseudoisochromatic stimuli do not require the use of previous methods to find the equiluminance of the stimulus. Normal trichromats were recruited to be tested with red-green chromatic sinusoidal gratings and pseudoisochromatic gratings presented by pattern onset-offset and pattern reversal modes in five spatial frequencies. In addition, we also tested four different chromatic contrast pairs in pattern onset-offset mode presentation in five trichromats and one colorblind subject (deuteranope). Pattern onset-offset VECPs elicited by sinusoidal gratings had a larger amplitude than those obtained with pseudoisochromatic stimuli, whereas pattern reversal VECPs elicited by pseudoisochromatic gratings had similar amplitudes compared to those elicited by sinusoidal gratings. We found no difference between the VECP amplitudes elicited by sinusoidal and pseudoisochromatic gratings containing different chromatic contrast. Color-blind subjects displayed absent or small responses to the stimuli. Pseudoisochromatic stimulus can be an alternative stimulus to generate VECPs dominated by the chromatic mechanism.

Detailed spatiotemporal brain mapping of chromatic vision combining high-resolution VEP with fMRI and retinotopy.

Neuroimaging studies have identified so far, several color-sensitive visual areas in the human brain, and the temporal dynamics of these activities have been separately investigated using the visual-evoked potentials (VEPs). In the present study, we combined electrophysiological and neuroimaging methods to determine a detailed spatiotemporal profile of chromatic VEP and to localize its neural generators. The accuracy of the present co-registration study was obtained by combining standard fMRI data with retinotopic and motion mapping data at the individual level. We found a sequence of occipito activities more complex than that typically reported for chromatic VEPs, including feed-forward and reentrant feedback. Results showed that chromatic human perception arises by the combined activity of at the least five parieto-occipital areas including V1, LOC, V8/VO, and the motion-sensitive dorsal region MT+. However, the contribution of V1 and V8/VO seems dominant because the re-entrant activity in these areas was present more than once (twice in V8/VO and thrice in V1). This feedforward and feedback chromatic processing appears delayed compared with the luminance processing. Associating VEPs and neuroimaging measures, we showed for the first time a complex spatiotemporal pattern of activity, confirming that chromatic stimuli produce intricate interactions of many different brain dorsal and ventral areas.

Cortical Double-Opponent Cells in Color Perception: Perceptual Scaling and Chromatic Visual Evoked Potentials.

In the early visual cortex V1, there are currently only two known neural substrates for color perception: single-opponent and double-opponent cells. Our aim was to explore the relative contributions of these neurons to color perception. We measured the perceptual scaling of color saturation for equiluminant color checkerboard patterns (designed to stimulate double-opponent neurons preferentially) and uniformly colored squares (designed to stimulate only single-opponent neurons) at several cone contrasts. The spatially integrative responses of single-opponent neurons would produce the same response magnitude for checkerboards as for uniform squares of the same space-averaged cone contrast. However, perceived saturation of color checkerboards was higher than for the corresponding squares. The perceptual results therefore imply that double-opponent cells are involved in color perception of patterns. We also measured the chromatic visual evoked potential (cVEP) produced by the same stimuli; checkerboard cVEPs were much larger than those for corresponding squares, implying that double-opponent cells also contribute to the cVEP response. The total Fourier power of the cVEP grew sublinearly with cone contrast. However, the 6-Hz Fourier component’s power grew linearly with contrast-like saturation perception. This may also indicate that cortical coding of color depends on response dynamics.

Visual Evoked Potentials in Glaucoma and Alzheimer's Disease.

Visual responses to gratings alternating in contrast have been studied in humans and several mammalian species. Previous evidence from human patients and animal models of neurodegeneration has highlighted the importance to record simultaneously the pattern electroretinogram (P-ERG) and visual evoked cortical potentials (VEPs) to investigate retinal and post-retinal sites of neurodegeneration.In view of the increasing importance of research on experimental models of neurodegenerative diseases, we present here the parametric properties of visual evoked responses in animal models of glaucoma and Alzheimer's disease. Glaucomaand Alzheimer's disease (AD) are two distinct multifactorial neurodegenerative and progressive diseases, primarily affecting the elderly.

Fractal Dimension Analysis of Transient Visual Evoked Potentials: Optimisation and Applications.

PurposeThe visual evoked potential (VEP) provides a time series signal response to an external visual stimulus at the location of the visual cortex. The major VEP signal components, peak latency and amplitude, may be affected by disease processes. Additionally, the VEP contains fine detailed and non-periodic structure, of presently unclear relevance to normal function, which may be quantified using the fractal dimension. The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic investigation of the key parameters in the measurement of the fractal dimension of VEPs, to develop an optimal analysis protocol for application.MethodsVEP time series were mathematically transformed using delay time, τ, and embedding dimension, m, parameters. The fractal dimension of the transformed data was obtained from a scaling analysis based on straight line fits to the numbers of pairs of points with separation less than r versus log(r) in the transformed space. Optimal τ, m, and scaling analysis were obtained by comparing the consistency of results using different sampling frequencies. The optimised method was then piloted on samples of normal and abnormal VEPs.ResultsConsistent fractal dimension estimates were obtained using τ = 4 ms, designating the fractal dimension = D2 of the time series based on embedding dimension m = 7 (for 3606 Hz and 5000 Hz), m = 6 (for 1803 Hz) and m = 5 (for 1000Hz), and estimating D2 for each embedding dimension as the steepest slope of the linear scaling region in the plot of log(C(r)) vs log(r) provided the scaling region occurred within the middle third of the plot. Piloting revealed that fractal dimensions were higher from the sampled abnormal than normal achromatic VEPs in adults (p = 0.02). Variances of fractal dimension were higher from the abnormal than normal chromatic VEPs in children (p = 0.01).ConclusionsA useful analysis protocol to assess the fractal dimension of transformed VEPs has been developed.

Neural correlates for task-relevant facilitation of visual inputs during visually-guided hand movements

Vision is a powerful source of information for controlling movements, especially fine actions produced by the hand that require a great deal of accuracy. However, the neural processes that enable vision to enhance movement accuracy are not well understood. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that the cortical sensitivity to visual inputs increases during a spatially-constrained hand movement compared to a situation where visual information is irrelevant to the task. Specifically, we compared the cortical visual-evoked potentials (VEPs) in response to flashes (right visual hemifield) recorded while participants followed the outline of an irregular polygon with a pen (i.e., tracing), with VEPs recorded when participants simply kept the pen still. This tracing task was chosen specifically because it requires many different visual processes (e.g., detection of line orientation, motion perception, visuomotor transformation) to be completed successfully. The tracing and resting tasks were performed with normal vision and also with mirror-reversed vision, thereby increasing task difficulty when tracing. We predicted that the sensitivity to visual inputs would be enhanced (i.e. greater VEPs) during tracing and that this increase in response sensitivity would be greater when tracing was performed with mirror-reversed vision. In addition, in order to investigate the existence of a link between the sensitivity to visual inputs and the accuracy with which participants traced the shape, we assigned participants to high performer (HP) or low performer (LP) groups according to their tracing performance in the condition with mirror-reversed visual feedback. Source analyses revealed that, for both groups, the sensitivity to visual inputs of the left occipital and MT/MST regions increased when participants traced the shape as compared to when they were resting. Also, for both groups of participants, the mirror-reversed vision did not affect the amplitude of the cortical response to visual inputs but increased the latencies of the responses in the occipital, temporal, and parietal regions. However, the HP group showed cortical responses that largely differed from those displayed by the LP group. Specifically, the HP group demonstrated movement-related increases of visual sensitivity in regions of the visual cortex that were not observed in the LP group. These increased responses to visual inputs were evidenced in the posterior inferior parietal, temporal–occipital, and inferior-temporal regions. Overall, our results are in line with the assertion that increasing the sensitivity to visual inputs serves to promote relevant visual information for the different processes involved during visually-guided hand movements. Our results also suggest that maintaining accurate hand tracing movements in the presence of discrepant visual and somatosensory feedback requires additional perceptual and spatial information processing that is tightly linked to visual inputs.

Brightness-color interactions in human early visual cortex.

The interaction between brightness and color causes there to be different color appearance when one and the same object is viewed against surroundings of different brightness. Brightness contrast causes color to be desaturated, as has been found in perceptual experiments on color induction and color-gamut expansion in human vision. However, it is not clear yet where in the cerebral cortex the brightness-color interaction that causes these major perceptual effects is located. One hypothesis is that brightness and color signals are processed separately and in parallel within the primary visual cortex V1 and only interact in extrastriate cortex. Another hypothesis is that color and brightness contrast interact strongly already within V1. We localized the brightness-color interaction in human V1 by means of recording the chromatic visual-evoked potential. The chromatic visual-evoked potential measurements decisively support the idea that brightness-color interaction arises in a recurrent inhibitory network in V1. Furthermore, our results show that the inhibitory signal for brightness-color interaction is generated by local brightness contrast at the boundary between target and surround, instead of by the luminance difference between the interior of the color target and its large background.

Cortical responses elicited by luminance and compound stimuli modulated by pseudo-random sequences: comparison between normal trichromats and congenital red-green color blinds.

Conventional pattern-reversal visual evoked cortical potential (VECP) shows positivity for luminance and chromatic equiluminant stimuli while conventional pattern-onset VECP shows positivity for luminance pattern-onset and negativity for chromatic pattern-onset. We evaluated how the presentation mode affects VECPs elicited by luminance and compound (luminance plus chromatic) pseudo-random stimulation. Eleven normal trichromats and 17 red-green color-blinds were studied. Pattern-reversal and pattern-onset luminance and compound (luminance plus red-green) gratings were temporally modulated by m-sequence. We used a cross-correlation routine to extract the first order kernel (K1) and the first and second slices of the second order kernel (K2.1 and K2.2, respectively) from the VECP response. We integrated the amplitude of VECP components as a function of time in order to estimate its magnitude for each stimulus condition. We also used a normalized cross-correlation method in order to test the similarity of the VECP components. The VECP components varied with the presentation mode and the presence of red-green contrast in the stimuli. In trichromats, for compound conditions, pattern-onset K1, K2.1, and K2.2, and pattern-reversal K2.1 and K2.2 had negative-dominated waveforms at 100 ms. Small negativity or small positivity were observed in dichromats. Trichromats had larger VECP magnitude than color-blinds for compound pattern-onset K1 (with large variability across subjects), compound pattern-onset and pattern-reversal K2.1, and compound pattern-reversal K2.2. Trichromats and color-blinds had similar VECP amplitude for compound pattern-reversal K1 and compound pattern-onset K2.2, as well as for all luminance conditions. The cross-correlation analysis showed high similarity between waveforms of compound pattern-onset K2.1 and pattern-reversal K2.2 as well as pattern-reversal K2.1 and K2.2. We suggest that compound pattern-reversal K2.1 is an appropriate response to study red-green color-opponent activity.
