Media frames, AI romantic relationships, and the perspectives of people in relationships; mapping and comparing news media themes with user perspectives

ABSTRACT Human romantic relationships with artificially intelligent (AI) conversational agents and anthropomorphic computers have long been the realm of science fiction. As companies like Luka, Inc. are developing embodied conversational agents called Replika, people’s ability to engage in romantic relationships has garnered news coverage around the phenomenon. Because news is often a place where emerging technologies are first introduced, it is essential to understand the choice of topics and themes these stories focus on (e.g., the ethics of technological development, human desires and vulnerabilities, and what constitutes meaningful and authentic connection). Similarly, the extent to which these articles include user perspectives and how users respond to these frames is also less well understood. This article reports on a mixed-method study that combines content analysis of news articles in 2023 about Replika (1008 search results, n = 104 unique articles) and qualitative semi-structured interviews with users in romantic relationships with their Replika (n = 16), recruited from the Reddit forum ‘ILoveMyReplika.’ Through a frame analysis of these news stories and coding for the types of futures they present, this study first examines some of the key events, themes, and hopes/fears reported in mass media. A thematic analysis of the interview data offers a comparative study to see where there is some overlap between these hopes/fears and user experiences and places where user reports diverge, downplay, and dispute the media characterizations. These studies help us better understand the interrelationship between media narratives, technological frames, and moral panics around a unique subset of and relationship with AI technologies.

Data-Campaigning on Facebook: Do Metrics of User Engagement Drive French Political Parties’ Publications?

Research on data-driven campaigning has mostly focused on the strategies of central campaign teams. However, there is a lack of evidence explaining how parties and supporters use data-driven campaigning techniques to organise their social media campaigning. Do user engagement metrics influence the choice of campaign themes by encouraging political parties to concentrate their communication on issues that are most liked, commented on, and shared? Our study focuses on the use of Facebook by French political parties and their supporters during the 2022 presidential election campaign. We conducted a supervised content analysis based on machine learning to examine their Facebook posts (<em>n</em> = 17,060). Our results show that the issues prioritized by parties on Facebook may be different from those that are most prominent in their broader communications. In most cases, however, these themes are not chosen based on user engagement, even for parties that claim to have developed their base through digital channels. Instead, the choice of themes seems influenced by more traditional campaign strategies, such as the desire to capture the electorate of their closest rival. In our conclusion, we discuss the implications of these findings for the adoption of data-driven campaigning in digital election communication across Europe.

Drawing in the dark: faith and knowledge in Jacques Derrida’s Memoirs of the Blind

ABSTRACT This essay focuses on Jacques Derrida’s Memoirs of the Blind, the catalog accompanying the exhibit of the same name that Derrida organized and curated at the Louvre Museum in Paris in 1990. The essay begins by considering Derrida’s seemingly surprising choice of themes, that is, darkness, blindness and invisibility, for an exhibit of drawings and paintings that belong to the so-called ‘visual arts’. The essay goes on to explain what Derrida calls in Memoirs of the Blind two intersecting logics in the visual arts, the ‘transcendental’ and the ‘sacrificial’, both of which are related in some way to blindness or invisibility. It then considers how these two logics come to intersect in Derrida’s own exhibit and in the autobiographical narrative – the memoir – of his exhibition, a narrative that, as we see, also proceeds from a certain blindness or lack of knowledge. The essay concludes by asking what Derrida’s analyses might teach us about the blindness at the very origin of the visual arts and, especially, about a certain ‘elementary faith’ – a notion taken from his 1996 essay ‘Faith and Knowledge’ – that is required in order to practice them.

A comparative study of thematic choices and thematic progression patterns in human-written and AI-generated texts

By adopting systemic functional grammar as the theoretical framework, the present research investigates the choices of the textual, the interpersonal, the topical Themes, and thematic progression patterns in human-written and AI-generated argumentative texts to examine how the human author and the robot organize the clause and text. The findings suggest that human-written and AI-generated texts differ significantly in using the subtypes of textual, interpersonal, and marked topical Themes. In terms of textual Themes, the machine tends to use more concession signals to repeat information that has been stated earlier, adopt fewer condition signals since the robot may be less likely to imagine possible or impossible situations, and repetitively rely on clause-initial conjunctive adjuncts of addition to extend the clause to the previous text. As for interpersonal Themes, the robot seldom adopts modal adjuncts or modal verbal operators as interpersonal Themes, which may suggest its lack of awareness of interaction with the reader and its avoidance of expressing its viewpoints in a typical or congruent way. Regarding topical Themes, the less use of marked themes in AI-generated texts demonstrates that AI may less carefully plan the development of the text to foreground the setting or construct coherent text. Considering thematic progression patterns, the frequent use of the constant pattern in AI-generated texts prevents the text from development and makes the text redundant and simplistic like a list of ideas.

The research problem is formulated as follows: How do the historical articles on Islam, particularly in terms of content and thematic choices, manifest themselves on Islamlib.com. Additionally, what criticisms regarding the history of Islam are developed by Islamlib.com, encompassing sources, methodology, and approaches. The research employs the historiographical method, analyzing themes, methods, data sources, and approaches through content analysis techniques. The findings indicate that the historical articles on Islamlib.com are crafted within the framework of Islamic history as part of world history and total history. This research argues that the historiography of liberal thinkers has reached a sophisticated level. The articles explore a variety of themes related to Islam, embracing a comprehensive view that goes beyond conventional narratives. The historiographical critiques offered by Islamlib.com extend to source reliability, methodological choices, and the adopted approaches. The methodology used in this study, content analysis, facilitates a thorough examination of the themes, methods, sources, and approaches present in the historical articles. The liberal historiography demonstrated on Islamlib.com reveals a nuanced and advanced understanding of Islamic history. Discourse of Foreign Digital Media: Analysis of the 2023 Turkish Presidential Election Coverage

This study examines the complex dynamics of communication in the changing field of journalism influenced by the use of media. It specifically focuses on how thoughts and perceptions are expressed in this evolving landscape. Information and communication technologies significantly influence journalism by rapidly disseminating news, updates, and societal impacts. Utilizing critical discourse analysis, the study aims to reveal systematic language usages and uncover latent meanings beyond news texts. Focused on the 2023 Turkish Presidential Election, news texts from four prominent international newslets Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN, and Euronews are analyzed. The comprehensive analysis of international media coverage investigates the interplay of linguistic and thematic choices in shaping narratives. With a dual focus on macro and micro levels of discourse, the study uncovers diverse approaches among foreign media outlets. Each outlet adopts a distinctive thematic approach at the macro level, emphasizing key figures and sociopolitical contexts. Al Jazeera spotlights competition, BBC underscores post-election polarization, CNN focuses on Erdogan's victory, and Euronews provides insights into national challenges. Visual elements, like photographs, contribute significantly to framing events, offering nuanced political messaging. Micro-level analysis explores linguistic choices, syntax, and rhetoric, emphasizing the active voice to underscore leaders' agency. Deliberate use of the passive voice in presenting election results maintains a neutral tone. The way sentences are structured and the cause-and-effect connections help readers understand political developments by providing context. The study underscores the importance of media literacy in decoding political event representations, emphasizing the multifaceted complexities of media discourse.

Research on Box Office Influencing Factors and Coping Strategies of Chinese War Genre Movies

Chinese audiences' keen interest in the historical events of wars at home and abroad and their passion for heroism and national emotions have made war genre movies popular in the Chinese market. This paper aims to discuss the box office influencing factors and coping strategies of Chinese war genre movies. With the continuous expansion of China's movie market, war genre movies, as an important movie genre, have attracted wide audience attention. This study adopts a combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis to study the box office performance and influencing factors of war genre movies in the Chinese market through literature review, box office data analysis, and audience survey, and proposes corresponding coping strategies. It is found that various factors, including the choice of theme, director, cast and marketing strategy, influence the box office of Chinese war genre movies. Aiming at these factors, this paper proposes a series of coping strategies to improve the box office performance of war genre movies and, at the same time, promote the healthy development of China's movie industry.

Cloud Security System for ECG Transmission and Monitoring Based on Chaotic Logistic Maps

Biomedical data or information must be transmitted securely via the internet for smart healthcare. The Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is amongst the most essential clinical signals which must be delivered to hospital facilities. Prime focus of this research is on the encryption of ECG for secure transmission. Chaos theory is used for the development of deterministic nonlinear systems, that can be used to create random numbers for the Chaotic Logistic Map (CLM) based encryption. This study describes a cryptographic algorithm for encrypting ECG signals that uses a mix of the CLM and fingerprint data. The common factor between the patient section and monitoring section is the operation on sample data points of ECG. The choice of proper encryption and decryption theme can save more amount of time and is invulnerable both to noise-based attacks and hacking instances. The proposed framework is implemented on Dropbox based cloud storage and access is possible from any given locations. Simulation tests are used to assess the system performance in terms of Structural Similarity Index Matrix (SSIM), Histogram, Spectral Distortion (SD), Correlation and Log-Likelihood Ratio (LLR). The incorporation of complex layers of CLM encryption increases security.

Психологизм в новеллах Д. Г. Лоуренса и Т. Уильямса: сопоставительный аспект

The aim of the study is to identify common and specific features in the interpretation and depiction of psychologism in the novellas by the English-speaking writers of the 20th century David Herbert Lawrence (1885-1930) and Tennessee Williams (1911-1983). Some Western theorists in their research note the influence of D. H. Lawrence on Tennessee Williams, observed, in particular, in a similar choice of themes in their works. Tennessee Williams recognized the importance of his British colleague’s creative method for his own writings. Nevertheless, the rich heritage of the writers in question represents an inexhaustible source for advancing new scientific goals and finding previously unexplored facets for research. The scientific originality of the study lies in establishing the fact of significant similarity in the use of the literary techniques for creating psychologism in the novellas by D. H. Lawrence and Tennessee Williams. As a result of a detailed literary analysis of the novellas, similar literary techniques of actualization of the psychological aspect were found. These techniques include the developed level of imagery in the short prose by the writers under comparison (images-characters, images-symbols), a peculiar depiction of literary time (retrospection), descriptive techniques, etc.

CREATIVITY AND THE FILM INDUSTRY: THE CASE OF “LATVIAN FILMS FOR LATVIA’S CENTENARY”

In this paper authors focus on the film projects created under the “Latvian Films for Latvia’s Centenary” (LV100) project competition, their thematic choice and development process. The aim of the article “Development of creative processes in the film industry in the framework of the LV100” is to find out how the thematic ideas of films under the “Latvian Films for Latvia’s Centenary” contest developed, and what important factors are reflected in this creative process? The empirical part of the work, which includes semi-structured in-depth interviews with filmmakers (N = 15), reveals that (1) film ideas have occurred either under the influence of individual factors or collective as a result of the impression of LV100 contest (2) certain film intentions have arisen as a source of inspiration from an existing cultural product (3) in the context of the creative process, nationalism can be viewed in two ways: for some directors, nationalism was not a major theme for film-making purposes, but other directors acknowledge that it had an important role in Latvian identity and self-awareness.

The relationship between attachment and anxiety. Comparative study between teenagers with disabilities coming from paternal versus maternal single-parent families

Starting from the hypothesis that the formation of a different type of attachment than the secure one can generate anxiety - a disturbing phenomenon of social adaptation, manifested by excessive fear - the present study aimed to investigate this aspect in the context of adolescents with multiple disabilities. This thematic choice constituted the motivational foundation of the research. The main purpose of the study was to examine, within the selected sample, if there are significant differences in the development of disabled adolescents, depending on their origin from a single-parent family environment, either maternal or paternal. More specifically, the research looked at the relationship between anxiety level and attachment style in adolescents with multiple disabilities in the sample. The study sample was set at 50 subjects, aged between 15 and 18 years. After analyzing the data and establishing a standard, a non-random sampling method with quotas was chosen. The criteria for inclusion in the population were: female and male adolescents, aged between 15 and 18 years, coming from single-parent or nuclear (two-parent) families, the presence of multiple disabilities, with the exception of severe intellectual disability or other conditions that could limit the understanding of the questionnaire items, balancing the number of female and male participants, as well as those from single-parent and two-parent families. The research methodology included the use of interviews and questionnaires. To identify the attachment style, the Attachment Style Questionnaire (C.S.A.), developed by Collins and Read in 1990, was used. To measure the level of anxiety, two anxiety questionnaires were combined, adapting their wording to be accessible to participants with impairments associated with mild or moderate intellectual disability. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to examine the relationship between attachment style and anxiety among adolescents with multiple disabilities, with a particular focus on identifying significant differences between these variables.

Ideal yet Actual: Actresses Posing as Antique Heroines in Late-Victorian “Classical” Portraits

The late-Victorian neoclassical artists George Frederic Watts, Frederic Leighton and Edward Poynter posed three famous actresses, Ellen Terry, Dorothy Dene and Lillie Langtry, in paintings whose subjects were drawn from Antiquity. The choice of mythological or tragic themes would categorize these works as “subject paintings” and not as portraits and yet the actuality of and likeness to the sitter blur such classifications. Building on research on 18th-century portraiture, this article studies a number of works that help address issues linked to their unstable categorisation as portrait or “subject picture”. Besides, two of the artists were romantically involved with the sitters, which raises autobiographical issues. All in all, the painters resorted to Antiquity in order to ennoble the celebrities at a time when models and actresses were frowned upon. However, this artistic ambition collided with the commodification of these actresses’ faces in the context of marketplace culture.

David Hare'in Stuff Happens ve The Permanent Way Adlı Oyunlarında Neoliberalizmin Eleştirel Bir Analizi

This paper concentrates on two plays written during the core period of the neoliberal era, specifically the 2000s. The works under examination are The Permanent Way and Stuff Happens. Acknowledging that literary productions are intertwined with broader and more complex social structures, this study endeavours to identify the dialectical relationships between Hare’s plays, the societies they reflect, and the dominant neoliberal policies prevalent since the 1970s. The research aims to contextualize David Hare’s selected plays and argue that they possess a dialectical relationship with the societies of their creation. Employing the dialectical method, the analysis examines the interactive arrangements between the plays and their socio-political context, emphasizing Hare’s unique language and thematic choices that construct his literary argument. Given the prevalence of neoliberal ideology, this research centers on plays written after the new millennium. The selection is based on their strong reflections of neoliberal policies and their perceived contribution to the decline of neoliberalism. Hence, this study aims to investigate the representation of economic and social inequalities within Hare’s plays, coinciding with the dissolution of social integrity and corruption of institutions, signifying the decline of neoliberalism

Communication of generations: Types of discourses and their essential features

The article concentrates on the communication of generations. It also seeks to identify and differentiate specific features of discourses related to and connected with the interactions of generations. These discourses include the discourse about generations, generational, intragenerational and intergenerational discourses. The main differentiating criterion is the verbalized generational identity of one or more participants of the communication process. Addressing generational issues in the process of communication without actualizing the generational identity of the communicants and the accentuation of the thematic choice is a criterion for distinguishing the discourse about the generation as a separate subspecies. The coinciding or differing generational affiliation of communicants acts as a differentiating feature of generational, intergenerational and intragenerational discourses. The verbalized generational belonging of the addresser is the marker of a generational discourse. It usually has no designated addressee. If the generational identity of both the addresser and the addressee is revealed, the generational discourse is divided into intragenerational and intergenerational. If communicants belong to the same generation, the discourse is intragenerational. If communicants belong to different generations, the discourse becomes intergenerational. The concept of “generation” can be considered from a biological and social point of view. If communicants belong to different generations and are relatives, the subspecies of the discourse is the intrafamilial discourse (personality-oriented). If the communicants belong to different generations but they are not relatives, the interfamilial discourse subspecies is distinguished, which can be both personalityoriented and institutional in nature (if the communicants emphasize the function of the generation as a social institution).

Imagery and compositional solutions of rural landscape in Sverdlovsk/Ekaterinburg painting art of the last third of the 20th century

The article examines the relationship between the theme and its plastic realization in rural landscape painting art of Sverdlovsk/Yekaterinburg. At the height of the landscape genre owing to the active involvement of the professional artistic community in it, the works of outstanding masters acquired independence and freedom of expression. Analysis of compositions and imagery in works of similar motif showed a wide coverage of the surrounding reality in the depiction of villages as reflected in the choice of themes and active search for means of artistic expression.
