Research Progress of China's Rural B and B Based on CiteSpace Analysis

The rapid development of rural B&B has gradually become an important carrier of domestic tourism development and an important way of rural revitalization. The article takes 95 pieces of Chinese core literature published in the CNKI database from 2010 to 2022 as the research object, and carries out bibliometric analysis from the amount of articles, time, authors and institutions, and keywords, and then combs out the research contents of five aspects, namely, lodging and rural tourism, design of rural lodging, rural lodging industry, development of lodging and countermeasures, to find out the shortcomings of the research on rural lodging in our country, and to put forward the future development of rural lodging, which should focus on the diversity of research perspectives, and the diversity of research contents. B&B should focus on the diversity of research perspectives and the plurality of research contents, such as the research on the characterization of B&B, the quality enhancement of B&B industry and other contents, as well as the comparative study of B&B industry in different regions, in order to provide reference and inspiration for the in-depth research in this field, and to further understand and promote the practice of rural B&B tourism in China.

Ethnic community’s perception of benefit-sharing and participation intentions in national park tourism in China: An asymmetric modeling approach

While tourism brings employment opportunities to ethnic communities surrounding national parks, striking a balance between economic development and environmentalcultural preservation is paramount for ensuring long-term sustainability. In 2021, the first mountain cog rail transit project for poverty alleviation and tourism development started to be built in western China. It will pass through the pilot area of the Giant Panda National Park, bringing development opportunities and challenges for the localTibetan community. Based on a questionnaire survey of 395 Tibetan residents in the park vicinity, this study utilizes asymmetrical approach so as to explore the multifaceted elements shaping benefit-sharing, tourism support and community participation intentions. The findings reveal residents’ heightened emphasis on the economic benefits of tourism over environmental and cultural considerations. This inclination is rooted in the enduring impact of stringent ecological conservation measures over the past 50 years, significantly constraining regional economic development. Notably, young females who did not fully benefit from tourism express a high level of support for tourism, particularly when economic, cultural, and facility benefits align. Paradoxically, higher economic benefits are associated with lower community participation intentions in tourism decision-making, underscoring that only low economic benefits trigger such intentions. Active community participation predominantly manifests among young males, suggesting that residents express participation intentions when their benefit-sharing needs are not adequately met. This study provides valuable insights into the coordinated development of transportation, community benefit-sharing, and the preservation of national parks.

Second-home Tourism in Tropical China: residents’ perception of socio-economic impacts

ABSTRACT Despite the significant growth of second-home tourism research, its geographical focus remains limited to a few countries. China has become a global economic powerhouse, with a rapidly growing middle class with disposable income. A combination of the latter with a range of favourable socialist housing policies and unique cultural forces have encouraged, and in some cases demanded, multiple-home ownership among Chinese families. At the forefront of this phenomenon are vast numbers of senior snowbirds who have chosen the tropical island of Hainan as the location of their second home. While there has been some investigation around this topic in select locations in China, the academic understanding of this phenomenon remains in its infancy. This paper investigates residents’ perceptions of Haikou, the capital of Hainan Province, regarding the socio-economic impact of second-home ownership on their lives, communities and the city. The results of this study will inform policy recommendations for local government while shedding new light on global narratives on second-home tourism phenomena.

Tourism energy consumption estimation and driving factors of carbon emissions based on LMDI and panel data models

Tourism has had some negative effects while generating positive results. The carbon emissions produced by tourism, which is not a “smokeless industry” in traditional cognition, account for a certain proportion of the global greenhouse gas emissions. Tourism transportation, tourist accommodation, and other tourism activities all contribute to the carbon emission of tourism, and various tourism activities not only stimulate the economy but also increase air pollution. As a big industry, tourism’s growth and development have continuously increased energy consumption, and the pressure on energy conservation and emission reduction has also been greatly aggravated. In this study, the tourism carbon emissions in each province of China were estimated using a “top-down” calculation model, the tourism energy consumption factors were decomposed using a logarithmic mean Divisia index model, and the driving factors of tourism carbon emissions were analyzed through a panel data model. Results show that the tourism carbon emissions in China rapidly increased from 360.74 million tons in 2006 to 853.28 million tons in 2021. The driving factors of tourism energy consumption in China are economic development, energy efficiency, and population, while the inhibiting factors are tourism intensity and energy structure. The per capita GDP, the proportion of the tertiary industry, the turnover of tourists, and the level of urbanization all significantly promote the growth of tourism carbon emissions in China at 1%. The research results are of great significance to the proposal of measures for tourism carbon emission reduction in combination with the situation of various provinces and cities, promoting regional economic development and boosting the development of tourism in China under the background of a low-carbon economy.

Analysis of Chongqing's Tourism and Economic Growth under the Impact of the Pandemic

Tourism is the backbone of any country's economic development. Domestic and offshore tourism was the most affected by the COVID-19 crisis, and more than any other sector globally in China. China's once flourishing tourism industry has endured a significant impact due to travel restrictions, regional isolation, and quarantine measures. This study focusses on historical tourist economic data from the micro to the macro level in order to assess the impact of tourism on Chongqing's and China's economy both before and after the pandemic crisis. The study used the vector error correction model (VECM) to quantitatively analyze data on Chongqing Gross Domestic Product (GDP), China tourism revenue (CTR) and Chongqing tourism revenue (CQTR) for the period from 2004 to 2023. The results show that COVID-19 leads to a significant decline in tourism-related income. In terms of the relationship between the two, after quantitative analysis of variance the effect of CQTR on Chongqing GDP is unidirectional rather than the main cause of Chongqing GDP, and the relationship between CQTR and CTR is bidirectional and interacts with it. This also explains why the CQTR dramatically drops in 2021–2023 while Chongqing GDP grows continuously and shows the reason why CQTR and CTR go up or down in the same trend.

Does the selection of high-quality scenic spots promote the growth of tourism economy? evidence from China's 5A-rated tourist attractions.

To stimulate the regional tourism economy, local governments often seek to increase the number of 5A-rated tourist attractions. However, there have been few analyses examining the economic benefits and influence mechanisms of 5A-rated attraction selection. Using the quality signaling theory and data from 282 prefecture-level cities spanning 2002 to 2019, this study examines the impact of 5A-rated attraction selection on the local tourism economy with the difference-in-differences method. This study's results demonstrate that the selection of 5A-rated attractions significantly contributes to the growth of the local tourism economy. The robustness test results confirm the validity of this conclusion. A mechanism analysis reveals that 5A-rated attractions positively impact the tourism economy via investments in infrastructure, popularization of informatization, and increased external openness. Furthermore, the study suggests that the effect of 5A-rated attractions is more pronounced in economically underdeveloped regions and low-level cities. The results of this study contribute to the sustainable development of China's tourism economy and may provide guidance for the establishment of tourism evaluation systems in other international locations in order to foster economic growth.

Analyzing the Progress in Chinese Tourism Research over the Past Decade: A Visual Exploration of Keywords and Delphi Surveys

Alongside the rapid development of China’s tourism sector, the continuous increase in the number of academic articles and research findings related to tourism in China has expanded the related research topics. Using a visual exploration of keywords and Delphi surveys, this paper systematically summarizes the progress in tourism research in China. The findings show that the research topics of national parks, rural revitalization, virtual tourism, the tourism economy and all-for-one tourism were hotspots in Chinese tourism filed over the past decade. Research methodologies have evolved from qualitative concept clarification to combining qualitative and quantitative approaches. In the future, Chinese tourism research should be explored further to the unique theoretical underpinnings of tourism in China; innovative research should be fostered to achieve theoretical originality; and collaborations between academia and the tourism industry should be facilitated to enhance the practical implications of academic findings. The aforementioned research bottlenecks and corresponding measures, and research vision and prospects indicated in the paper can guide future research, and let Western scholars know the hotspots and future trends of tourism research from the Eastern perspective.

Sustainable Marketing in Enhancing Customer Consumption in Tourism Industry in China

In China, there are many weaknesses related to the development of the hospitality and tourism market. Nevertheless, regarding to marketing, it is necessary to have more well prepared marketing practices in order to build some replaceable types of sustainable tourism following customer requirements and current trends at the time. The research is conducted with the purpose of making an intensive analysis of the importance of sustainable marketing in enhancing customer consumption in tourism industry in China. This paper also proposes some solutions to enhance sustainable tourism in China.

Tourists’ willingness to adopt government-led smart tourism platforms: A mixed-methods study

The diversity of demands in the mass tourism market together with the complexity of innovative technologies makes promoting smart tourism a challenge. In recent years, government-led smart tourism platforms have become a representative product of smart tourism in China, but tourists do not seem ready to embrace innovative products. The current research adopted a mixed-methods approach by employing a decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory method followed by a survey-based study to explore key factors driving Chinese tourists’ adoption of government-led smart tourism platforms. The results revealed that the elements influencing tourists’ willingness to adopt are complex and include tourists’ innovativeness, performance expectancy, perceived cost, perceived risk, and perceived playfulness. Among them, tourists’ innovativeness showed a positive impact on tourists’ willingness to adopt through the mediation effects of performance expectancy. Meanwhile, the positive effect of performance expectancy on their willingness to adopt can be mediated by perceived playfulness. The findings enhance our understanding of which factors impact tourists’ adoption theoretically thereby practically helping the government provide better tourism service experiences in both online and offline contexts.

A study on the influence of perceived distance on China's inbound Tourism and the interaction of non-economic distance: An analysis of dynamic extended gravity model based on 61 countries' entry data (2004-2018).

In the post-epidemic era, the restart of China's inbound tourism is imminent. However, there are gaps in our current understanding of how distance perception dynamically affects inbound tourism in China. In order to understand the past patterns of inbound tourism in China, we mapped the data of 61 countries of origin from 2004 to 2018 into a dynamic expanding gravity model to understand the effects of cultural distance, institutional distance, geographical distance, and economic distance on inbound tourism in China and revealed the dynamic interaction mechanism of non-economic distance perception on inbound tourism in China. Our research results show that cultural distance has a positive impact on China's inbound tourism, while institutional distance has a negative impact. The significant finding is that the dynamic interaction of the above two kinds of perceived distance can still have a positive impact on China's inbound tourism. Its practical significance is that it can counteract the influence of institutional distance by strengthening the cultural distance. Generally speaking, geographical distance and institutional distance restrict China's inbound tourism flow, while cultural distance, economic distance, and interactive perceptual distance promote China's inbound tourism flow.

Development of Rural Tourism in China in the Context of Rural Revitalization

Rural revitalization is an important development strategy in the new era of China, and rural tourism is a new industrial form that has flourished in recent years. As an important way to realize the strategy of rural revitalization, the impact of rural tourism on the countryside involves the rural economy, ecology, culture, governance and other levels, echoing the overall requirements of the country's five aspects of rural revitalization. At present, although the development of rural tourism in China has achieved certain results, there are still many deficiencies. Therefore, this paper first explores the role mechanism of rural tourism to promote rural revitalization, and then describes the current situation and problems of rural tourism development in the context of rural revitalization in China, and puts forward countermeasure proposals for rural tourism development on this basis.

Emerging in‐migration of urban young adults engaging in rural tourism in China

AbstractDuring the rapid urbanisation of China in recent decades, a vast proportion of the labour force left rural hometowns to find employment in cities. In the context of rural revitalisation and tourism development in China, rural tourism is booming, bringing many tourism‐related jobs to the countryside. As a result, some young urban adults have moved to work in rural areas. Based on in‐depth interviews in Su village in Nanjing, China, this study seeks to investigate the motivations of those who choose to work in the countryside and the connections between this and stages in the life course of urbanites in the 90s generation, a cohort that is quite distinct from older cohorts. This study finds that the motivations of these younger workers range from career development and cost reduction to a preference for a rural lifestyle. Engaging in tourism‐related work in rural areas is associated with two life courses (work career and individual/family pathway). This study also finds that the cohort working rural tourism in rural areas is differentiated: while some pursue career development, others aim to escape certain pressures and obligations by ‘lying flat’ in the more congenial rural setting where living costs are lower than in cities. Pro‐tourism rural areas, with an acceptable distance from cities, become valuable places for these youth to resist or balance their life in front of increasingly competitive urban life during their adult transitional period.

How to Improve the Walking Classroom: Status of Implementation, Problem Analysis, and Strategy Educational tourism innovation in primary schools

Educational tourism is an educational approach that integrates field trips and curriculum learning. It has the potential to enhance students' enthusiasm for learning, develop their practical skills, and enhance their overall quality of education. Since 2013, significant attention has been paid to the implementation of educational tourism in China. The government has consistently released a series of policy documents with the objective of fostering the growth of educational tourism, transitioning it from a pilot program to a comprehensive promotion strategy. Nevertheless, in practical application, research trips present numerous challenges, including the issues of "study and travel are separated" and "skimming over the surface". Based on the findings of the field investigation conducted in five primary schools located in Jinhua City, it is evident that despite the active involvement of students and teachers in research trips, numerous practical challenges are encountered. This paper presents an analysis of the present state of the educational tourism curriculum implementation in primary schools. It examines various challenges, including the curriculum's singular design, limited practicality, a scarcity of qualified teachers, insufficient student subjectivity, and an imperfect evaluation system. In order to address these issues, this study suggests several strategies for improving the effectiveness and quality of the primary school educational tourism curriculum. These strategies include reconstructing the curriculum system, refining the curriculum design, enhancing teacher training, establishing a comprehensive evaluation mechanism, fostering closer collaboration between families and schools, mobilizing social resources, and other related approaches.

Does world heritage site initiation promote tourism? A difference-in-difference approach

Extant studies have found that the inscription of World Heritage sites (WHS) has no or negative effect on tourism in China, which does not explain why Chinese local governments are eager to apply for WHS. This study employs the difference-in-difference approach and city-level data from China to assess the effect of WHS over a more extended period, starting from initiation instead of inscription. The results indicate that WHS initiation can promote tourism, while WHS inscription reduces tourism revenue. Furthermore, heterogeneity analysis reveals that WHS initiation has a more positive effect on domestic tourism revenue in the eastern region of China. In contrast, WHS inscription has a more negative effect on tourism revenue in the western region.

Partnerships in educational tourism in China: a power perspective

Quality education is one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and tourism has been identified as an effective means of learning. However, few studies have explored tourism’s role in achieving the goal of quality education (SDG 4). The Chinese government’s practice of realizing quality education through educational tourism is a case worthy of investigation. Yet collaboration between the education and tourism sectors in this country comes with challenges, which can be addressed through effective partnerships (SDG 17). Interaction among stakeholders in educational tourism has developed under the impetus of administrative power; power-based operations thus affect how stakeholders work together. This paper accordingly introduces Foucault’s power theory to explore partnerships in educational tourism in China. Three partnerships are found to drive educational tourism development: horizontal intersectoral partnerships, vertical public-sector partnerships, and public–private partnerships. We further analyze how power operates within these categories, identifying the factors that influence partnership formation and the reasons behind power imbalances. Targeted suggestions and areas for improvement are also offered with the expectation that tourism is an effective means of advancing the goal of quality education.

RESEARCH ON THE COLLABORATIVE MODEL OF HIGH-LEVEL SPORTS AND TOURISM TALENT CULTIVATION BETWEEN CHINESE SPORTS UNIVERSITIES AND ENTERPRISES

The integration of the sports and tourism industries has become a major development trend, creating new demands for high-level talent cultivation. However, Chinas current talent training model needs to adapt to the needs of the integrated development of sports and tourism. This study explores the collaborative talent cultivation model between Chinese sports universities and enterprises to promote high-level talent cultivation for the integrated development of sports and tourism. This research analyzes the current status, problems, and influencing factors of collaborative talent cultivation between universities and enterprises. It finds that the lack of clear talent training objectives, insufficient practical training opportunities, and inadequate incentive mechanisms hinder the effectiveness of the collaborative model. Based on this, the study proposes a collaborative talent cultivation mode that clarifies the roles and responsibilities of universities and enterprises, optimizes the curriculum system and practical training links, and establishes a long-term cooperation mechanism. Implementing this collaborative model can effectively integrate the advantages of universities and enterprises, enhance the practical and innovative abilities of high-level sports and tourism talents, and provide solid human resource support for the integrated development of the two industries. The findings of this study have important theoretical and practical significance for improving the talent training system in the field of sports and tourism in China.
