Improvement on the linearity response of PandaX-4T with new photomultiplier tube bases

With the expanding reach of physics, xenon-based detectors such as PandaX-4T in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory aim to cover an energy range from sub-keV to multi-MeV. A linear response of the photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) is required for both scintillation and electroluminescence signals. Through a dedicated bench test, we investigated the cause of the non-linear response in the Hamamatsu R11410-23 PMTs used in PandaX-4T. The saturation and suppression of the PMT waveform observed during the commissioning of PandaX-4T were caused by the high-voltage divider base. The bench test data validated the de-saturation algorithm used in the PandaX-4T data analysis. We also confirmed the improvement in linearity of a new PMT base design with three more low radioactivity capacitors at later dynodes, which will be used to upgrade the PMT readout system in PandaX-4T.

Background experiment of the low energy x-ray telescope detectors on insight-HXMT

The low energy x-ray telescope (LE) is one of the main instruments of the insight-hard x-ray modulation telescope, the first x-ray astronomical satellite of China. The scientific objectives of the LE focus on the scanning and pointed observations of the x-ray sources in the soft x-ray band (1–13 keV). In order to complete the observation tasks and accurately analyze the background information of the LE, it is essential to obtain the background data of the detectors. Therefore, we designed an LE background experiment. The experiment began with an underground background experiment in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory with a rock of a thickness of 2400 m, followed by a ground background experiment. These two experiments lasted for a long time, and through comparison and analysis of the background data, it was found that underground laboratories significantly shielded cosmic rays. In addition, the background of detectors in the underground experiment was more than one order of magnitude lower than that in the ground experiment. The experiments also revealed multiple x-ray fluorescence peaks of various elements in the background, including silicon from the detector itself, erbium in the ceramic substrate, and copper in the mounting plate. The anti-coincidence design of detectors was observed to reduce the x-ray fluorescence peaks of silicon. By comparing the background flux obtained with the background flux in the orbit, it was found that the background generated by radioactive substances inside the LE detector is very low. Within the energy range of less than 7.5 keV, the flux in the orbit is about 0.012 counts/s/keV, the ground flux is ∼3 × 10−3 counts/s/keV, and the underground flux is about 1.5 × 10−4 counts/s/keV. However, the flux in the orbit significantly increases above 7.5 keV, which does not occur in both the ground and underground background experiments. These results provide reference and guidance for scientific teams and instrument teams to analyze the data of the low energy x-ray telescope.

Preliminary research and scheme design of deep underground in situ geo-information detection experiment for Geology in Time

The deep earth, deep sea, and deep space are the main parts of the national “three deep” strategy, which is in the forefront of the strategic deployment clearly defined in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025) and the Long-Range Objectives Through the Year 2035. It is important to reveal the evolutionary process and mechanism of deep tectonics to understand the earth’s past, present and future. The academic connotation of Geology in Time has been given for the first time, which refers to the multi-field evolution response process of geological bodies at different time and spatial scales caused by geological processes inside and outside the Earth. Based on the deep in situ detection space and the unique geological environment of China Jinping Underground Laboratory, the scientific issue of the correlation mechanism and law between deep internal time-varying and shallow geological response is given attention. Innovative research and frontier exploration on deep underground in situ geo-information detection experiments for Geology in Time are designed to be carried out, which will have the potential to explore the driving force of Geology in Time, reveal essential laws of deep earth science, and explore innovative technologies in deep underground engineering.

A new large area MCP-PMT for high energy detection

20-inch Large area photomultiplier tube based on microchannel plate (MCP-PMT) is newly developed in China. It is widely used in high energy detection experiments such as Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL) and Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO). To overcome the poor time performance of the existing MCP-PMT, a new design of large area MCP-PMT is proposed in this paper. Three-dimensional models are developed in CST Studio Suite to validate its feasibility. Effects of the size and bias voltage of the focusing electrodes and MCP configuration on the collection efficiency (CE) and time performance are studied in detail using the finite integral technique and Monte Carlo method. Based on the simulation results, the optimized operating and geometry parameters are chosen. Results show that the mean ratio of photoelectrons landing on the MCP active area is 97.5%. The acceptance fraction of the impinging photoelectrons is close to 100% due to the emission of multiple secondary electrons when hitting the MCP top surface. The mean transit time spread (TTS) of the photoelectrons from the photocathode is 1.48 ns.

Development of the ultra-high sensitivity radon monitor based on electrostatic collection method

The radioactive decay of radon (Rn-222) and its progenies are significant background sources in an extremely low background environment, interfering with investigation like detecting dark matter and observing neutrinos. In this paper, a 1000 L ultra-high sensitivity radon monitor for China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) based on electrostatic collection and Au-Si surface barrier detector was developed. The monitor is capable of distinguishing Rn-220 from the energy spectrum and effectively eliminating any interference caused by Rn-220. At an absolute air humidity of 0.02 g/m3, the scale factor of the monitor is: 17.35 ± 0.88 (counts/day)/(mBq/m3). Moreover, it achieves a remarkable lower limit of detection of 0.17 mBq/m3 in a single-day measurement. These findings demonstrate the suitability of the ultra-high sensitivity radon monitor for diverse scenarios demanding stringent background requirements.

Dynamic mechanical characteristics of deep Jinping marble in complex stress environments

To reveal the dynamic mechanical characteristics of deep rocks, a series of impact tests under triaxial static stress states corresponding to depths of 300–2400 m were conducted. The results showed that both the strain rates and the stress environments in depth significantly affect the mechanical characteristics of rocks. The sensitivity of strain rate to the dynamic strength and deformation modulus shows a negative correlation with depth, indicating that producing penetrative cracks in deep environments is more difficult when damage occurs. The dynamic strength shows a tendency to decrease and then increase slightly, but decreases sharply finally. Transmissivity demonstrates a similar trend as that of strength, whereas reflectivity indicates the opposite trend. Furthermore, two critical depths with high dynamically induced hazard possibilities based on the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) were proposed for deep engineering. The first critical depth is 600–900 m, beyond which the sensitivity of rock dynamic characteristics to the strain rate and restraint of circumferential stress decrease, causing instability of surrounding rocks under axial stress condition. The second one lies at 1500–1800 m, where the wave impedance and dynamic strength of deep surrounding rocks drop sharply, and the dissipation energy presents a negative value. It suggests that the dynamic instability of deep surrounding rocks can be divided into dynamic load dominant and dynamic load induced types, depending on the second critical depth.

Performance of the 1-ton prototype neutrino detector at CJPL-I

China Jinping Underground Laboratory provides an ideal site for solar, geo-, and supernova neutrino studies. With a prototype neutrino detector running since 2017, containing 1-ton liquid scintillator, we tested its experimental hardware, performed the detector calibration and simulation, and measured its radioactive backgrounds, as an early stage of the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE). We investigated the radon background and implemented the nitrogen sealing technology to control it. This paper presents the details of these studies and will serve as a key reference for the construction and optimization of the future large detector of JNE.

Search for exotic interactions of solar neutrinos in the CDEX-10 experiment

We investigate exotic neutrino interactions using the 205.4−kg·day dataset from the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. New constraints on the mass and couplings of new gauge bosons are presented. Two nonstandard neutrino interactions are considered: a U(1)B–L gauge-boson-induced interaction between an active neutrino and electron/nucleus, and a dark-photon-induced interaction between a sterile neutrino and electron/nucleus via kinetic mixing with a photon. This work probes an unexplored parameter space involving sterile neutrino coupling with a dark photon. Exotic Dark Matter Search with the CDEX-10 Experiment at China’s Jinping Underground Laboratory

A search for exotic dark matter (DM) in the sub-GeV mass range has been conducted using 205kg day data taken from a p-type point contact germanium detector of the CDEX-10 experiment at China's Jinping underground laboratory. New low-mass dark matter searching channels, neutral current fermionic DM absorption (χ+A→ν+A) and DM-nucleus 3→2 scattering (χ+χ+A→ϕ+A), have been analyzed with an energy threshold of 160eVee. No significant signal was found; thus new limits on the DM-nucleon interaction cross section are set for both models at the sub-GeV DM mass region. A cross section limit for the fermionic DM absorption is set to be 2.5×10^{-46} cm^{2} (90%C.L.) at DM mass of 10 MeV/c^{2}. For the DM-nucleus 3→2 scattering scenario, limits are extended to DM mass of 5 and 14 MeV/c^{2} for the massless dark photon and bound DM final state, respectively.

Deep Underground Laboratory Measurement of ^{13}C(α,n)^{16}O in the Gamow Windows of the s and i Processes.

The ^{13}C(α,n)^{16}O reaction is the main neutron source for the slow-neutron-capture process in asymptotic giant branch stars and for the intermediate process. Direct measurements at astrophysical energies in above-ground laboratories are hindered by the extremely small cross sections and vast cosmic-ray-induced background. We performed the first consistent direct measurement in the range of E_{c.m.}=0.24 to 1.9MeV using the accelerators at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory and Sichuan University. Our measurement covers almost the entire intermediate process Gamow window in which the large uncertainty of the previous experiments has been reduced from 60% down to 15%, eliminates the large systematic uncertainty in the extrapolation arising from the inconsistency of existing datasets, and provides a more reliable reaction rate for the studies of the slow-neutron-capture and intermediate processes along with the first direct determination of the alpha strength for the near-threshold state.

Constraints on sub-GeV dark matter boosted by cosmic rays from the CDEX-10 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

We present new constraints on light dark matter boosted by cosmic rays (CRDM) using the 205.4 kg day data of the CDEX-10 experiment conducted at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. The Monte Carlo simulation package CJPL\_ESS was employed to evaluate the Earth shielding effect. Several key factors have been introduced and discussed in our CRDM analysis, including the contributions from heavier CR nuclei than proton and helium, the inhomogeneity of CR distribution, and the impact of the form factor in the Earth attenuation calculation. Our result excludes the dark matter--nucleon elastic scattering cross-section region from $1.7\times 10^{-30}$ to $10^{-26}~\rm cm^2$ for dark matter of 10 keV$/c^2$ to 1 GeV$/c^2$.

Energy Generation and Attenuation of Blast-Induced Seismic Waves under In Situ Stress Conditions

During blasting in deep mining and excavation, the rock masses usually suffer from high in situ stress. The initial seismic energy generated in deep rock blasting and its attenuation with distance is first theoretically analyzed in this study. Numerical modeling of the multiple-hole blasting in a circular tunnel excavation under varied in situ stress conditions is then conducted to investigate the influences of in situ stress levels and anisotropy on the blasting seismic energy generation and attenuation. The case study of the deep rock blasting in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) is finally presented to demonstrate the seismic energy attenuation laws under varied in situ stress levels. The results show that with the increase in the in situ stress level, the explosive energy consumed in the rock fracture is reduced, and more explosive energy is converted into seismic energy. The increasing in situ stress causes the seismic Q of the rock mass medium to first increase and then decrease, and consequently, the seismic energy attenuation rate first decreases and then increases. Compared to the condition without in situ stress, the blasting seismic energy decays more slowly with distance under in situ stress. Then the seismic waves generated in deep rock blasting are more likely to reach and exceed the peak particle velocity (PPV) limits stipulated in the blasting vibration standards. Under non-hydrostatic in situ stress, the generation and attenuation of the blasting seismic energy are anisotropic. The highest seismic energy density is generated in the rock mass in the minimum principal stress orientation. Its attenuation is dependent upon the in situ stress aligning the wave propagation orientation.

Search for neutrinoless double-beta decay of Ge76 with a natural broad energy germanium detector

A natural broad energy germanium (BEGe) detector is operated in the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL) for a feasibility study of building the next generation experiment of the neutrinoless double-beta (0{$\nu\beta\beta$}) decay of $^{76}$Ge. The setup of the prototype facility, characteristics of the BEGe detector, background reduction methods, and data analysis are described in this paper. A background index of 6.4$\times$10$^{-3}$ counts/(keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$day) is achieved and 1.86 times lower than our previous result of the CDEX-1 detector. No signal is observed with an exposure of 186.4 kg$\cdot$day, thus a limit on the half life of $^{76}$Ge 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay is set at T$_{1/2}^{0\nu}$ $>$ 5.62$\times$10$^{22}$ yr at 90% C.L.. The limit corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass in the range of 4.6 $\sim$ 10.3 eV, dependent on the nuclear matrix elements.

Design of multi-layer grid in a giant electrostatic collection vessel of ultra-high sensitivity radon monitor

Developing an ultra-high sensitivity electrostatic collection radon monitor benefits the scientific experiments of China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Here, a one cubic meter electrostatic collection vessel with a multi-layer hemispherical metal grid was designed to increase the collection efficiency of positively charged Po-218 ions. The 3D model of the giant electrostatic collection vessel was constructed using the COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software, and the potential and electric field distributions in the vessel were simulated. Numerical simulation results were obtained according to the different radii and voltages applied to the grid. The electric field between the vessel wall and grid, between two grids, and between the grid and surface of the PIPS detector must be set uniformly to reduce the collection time of the positively charged Po-218 ions. Simulation results showed that setting a charged metal grid in the vessel can optimize the electric field distribution, and setting a two-layer charged metal grid in the giant vessel can further increase the cost performance. The average collection times of the electrostatic collection vessel with the two-layer grid along the vertical and oblique lines approximately 15% and 13% of that without the grid. The rates of positively charged Po-218 ions that could pass through the one and two-layer metal grids were 86.78% and 50%. Optimizing the electric field can greatly increase the sensitivity of radon monitors and reduce the humidity restrictions.

Solar, terrestrial, and supernova neutrino experiments are subject to muon-induced radioactive background. The China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL), with its unique advantage of a 2400 m rock coverage and long distance from nuclear power plants, is ideal for MeV-scale neutrino experiments. Using a 1-ton prototype detector of the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE), we detected 343 high-energy cosmic-ray muons and (7.86 3.97) muon-induced neutrons from an 820.28-day dataset at the first phase of CJPL (CJPL-I). Based on the muon-induced neutrons, we measured the corresponding muon-induced neutron yield in a liquid scintillator to be μ−1g−1cm2 at an average muon energy of 340 GeV. We provided the first study for such neutron background at CJPL. A global fit including this measurement shows a power-law coefficient of (0.75 0.02) for the dependence of the neutron yield at the liquid scintillator on muon energy.

Cosmogenic background study for a ^{100}Mo-based bolometric demonstration experiment at China JinPing underground Laboratory

We perform simulation study for a 10-kg ^{100}Mo-based bolometeric demonstration experiment for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0nu beta beta ) search at China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). Cosmogenic production of radionuclides in ^{100}Mo-enriched lithium molybdate crystals and copper components of the detector system are studied using Geant4 toolkit based on the simulated cosmic ray data from the CRY library. Background energy spectra of the cosmogenic radionuclides including ^{56}Co, ^{82}Rb and ^{88}Y which are harmful for the ^{100}Mo-based 0nu beta beta experiment are investigated. We then evaluate the total cosmogenic background level in the ^{100}Mo 0nu beta beta search energy region of interest (ROI) for the demonstration experiment. After one year of cooling down underground, the residual background contribution is found to be 1.8 times 10^{-6} cts/kg/keV/yr and 3.3times 10^{-4} cts/kg/keV/yr from crystals and copper components, respectively. Furthermore, underground cosmogenic activation of copper and lithium molybdate crystal is calculated based on the simulation spectra of neutron and proton in CJPL. The underground cosmogenic background is found to be negligible in the ROI.

Low radioactive material screening and background control for the PandaX-4T experiment

PandaX-4T is a ton-scale dark matter direct detection experiment using a dual-phase TPC technique at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. Various ultra-low background technologies have been developed and applied to material screening for PandaX-4T, including HPGe gamma spectroscopy, ICP-MS, NAA, radon emanation measurement system, krypton assay station, and alpha detection system. Low background materials were selected to assemble the detector. Surface treatment procedures were investigated to further suppress radioactive background. Combining measured results and Monte Carlo simulation, the total material background rates of PandaX-4T in the energy region of 1–25 keVee are estimated to be (9.9 ± 1.9) × 10−3 mDRU for electron recoil and (2.8 ± 0.6) × 10−4 mDRU for nuclear recoil. In addition, natKr in the detector is estimated to be < 8 ppt.

&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;22&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;Ne(&amp;alpha;, n)&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;25&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;Mg: The key neutron source in massive stars

<p indent="0mm">The origin of heavy elements from iron to uranium in the universe is an important frontier direction for nuclear astrophysics. It is considered to be one of the 11 greatest unanswered questions of physics in this century. The neutron capture reaction can overcome the Coulomb barrier and is the key way to generate heavy elements in the universe. The average life of free neutrons is only about <sc>15 min.</sc> Therefore, the neutron source is a hot topic for understanding the origin of heavy elements. There are two main neutron sources in the s-process nucleosynthesis, one is the ¹³C(α, n)¹⁶O reaction, the other is the ²²Ne(α, n)²⁵Mg reaction. The ¹³C(α, n)¹⁶O reaction mainly provides neutrons for the s-process nucleosynthesis of small or medium mass stars, and affects the nucleosynthesis of nuclides with the mass numbers from 90 to 209; while the ²²Ne(α, n)²⁵Mg reaction mainly provides neutrons for the s-process nucleosynthesis of massive stars and affects the nucleosynthesis of nuclides with the mass number less than 90. The ²²Ne(α, n)²⁵Mg reaction takes place in the core helium burning phase and the subsequent shell carbon burning phase of massive stars. Due to the difficulty of experiment measurement, the data of the ²²Ne(α, n)²⁵Mg reaction rate is still lacking, which leads to the problem of understanding effective neutron supply in the nucleosynthesis of the heavy elements in massive stars. Limited by cosmic ray backgrounds, a large number of key reactions in hydrostatic nuclear burning phases cannot be accurately measured. Therefore, direct measurement of these reactions has gradually moved from the earth-surface to underground laboratories. The Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics (LUNA) experimental platform in Italy is a mature underground nuclear astrophysics laboratory in the world. Since the 1990s, direct measurement of many nuclear reactions has been carried out. Jinping Underground Nuclear Astrophysics Laboratory (JUNA) is a new experimental platform. JUNA is located in the world’s deepest underground laboratory—China JinPing Underground Laboratory (CJPL). JUNA team has successfully developed a <sc>10 mA</sc> low-energy accelerator and experimental terminal, which aims to conduct experimental research on a number of key nuclear reactions in hydrostatic hydrogen and helium burnings of stars in an underground environment with very low background. Since its operation in the underground laboratory at the end of 2020, JUNA has completed the first phase of experimental tasks and successfully studied several key nuclear reactions including the neutron source reaction¹³C(α, n)¹⁶O. In this paper, we review the motivation of the key neutron source ²²Ne(α, n)²⁵Mg in the origin of heavy elements and in the massive stars, the latest research progress of this neutron source and future research plan, especially the underground direct measurement experimental plan. As the key neutron source reaction of the s-process, the ²²Ne(α, n)²⁵Mg reaction is of great significance for understanding the origin of heavy elements in the universe. As the first experiment in the second phase of JUNA, the ²²Ne(α, n)²⁵Mg reaction is expected to achieve world-class research results and provides the crucial nuclear input for understanding the nucleosynthesis in weak s-process.

Search for Cosmic-Ray Boosted Sub-GeV Dark Matter at the PandaX-II Experiment.

We report a novel search for the cosmic-ray boosted dark matter using the 100 tonne·day full dataset of the PandaX-II detector located at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory. With the extra energy gained from the cosmic rays, sub-GeV dark matter particles can produce visible recoil signals in the detector. The diurnal modulations in rate and energy spectrum are utilized to further enhance the signal sensitivity. Our result excludes the dark matter-nucleon elastic scattering cross section between 10^{-31} and 10^{-28} cm^{2} for dark matter masses from 0.1 MeV/c^{2} to 0.1 GeV/c^{2}, with a large parameter space previously unexplored by experimental collaborations.

Development of a low-background neutron detector array

A low-background neutron detector array was developed to measure the cross section of the $$^{13}$$ C( $$\alpha$$ ,n) $$^{16}$$ O reaction, which is the neutron source for the s-process in AGB stars, in the Gamow window ( $$E_\text {c.m.}$$ = 190 ± 40 keV) at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL). The detector array consists of 24 $$^{3}$$ He proportional counters embedded in a polyethylene cube. Owing to the deep underground location and a borated polyethylene shield around the detector array, a low background of 4.5(2)/h was achieved. The $$^{51}$$ V(p, n) $$^{51}$$ Cr reaction was used to determine the neutron detection efficiency of the array for neutrons with energies $$E_\text {n}<$$ 1 MeV. Geant4 simulations are shown to effectively reproduce the experimental results. They were used to extrapolate the detection efficiency to higher energies for neutrons emitted in the $$^{13}$$ C( $$\alpha$$ ,n) $$^{16}$$ O reaction. The theoretical angular distributions of the $$^{13}$$ C( $$\alpha$$ ,n) $$^{16}$$ O reaction were shown to be important in the estimation of the uncertainties of the detection efficiency.
