Introduction . The article presents the results of the external audit conducted in a region of the North Caucasian Federal District where we evaluated the quality of health care services for children with cancer. Patients and methods . We investigated the regional cancer registry data and medical histories of children with solid tumors (except brain tumors) who received specific therapy or symptomatic treatment at the oncology department of the regional hospital or federal research institutes in the period of 2011–2015. Results. The analysis revealed 64 patients who were registered in the region in 2011–2015. The detected group included 28 (43.8%) girls and 36 (56.2%) boys with cancer (age 0–17 years). The group enrolled 5 (7.8%) patients with stage I disease, 14 (21.9%) — with stage II, 19 (29.7%) — with stage III, and 26 (40.6%) — with stage IV. Pediatric oncology facilities are not available at the local level. Partially, specific therapy and symptomatic treatment was performed in 18 (28.1%) patients at the oncology department of the Republican regional hospital and in 46 (71.9%) patients at the federal research institutes. At the moment, 28 (43.8%) patients from the analysed group are alive, the progression of disease resulted in death of 26 (40.6%) patients, and 10 (15.6%) patients dropped out of follow-up. Conclusion . The establishment of the oncology department is reasonable according to the situation in the region. It will provide timely diagnosis, early intervention including chemotherapeutic treatment, and patients’ routing with effective application of budgetary funds.
