Chemistry awards

Robert S. Mulliken, codirector of the Laboratory of Molecular Structure and Spectra at the University of Chicago, has been named recipient of two separate awards in chemistry. The 1964 John Gamble Kirkwood Medal, honoring the late director of the Division of the Sciences at Yale, was presented to Dr. Mulliken in November by the Yale University Chemistry Department and the New Haven Section of the American Chemical Society. The 53rd Willard Gibbs Award is scheduled to be presented to him in May, during a dinner ceremony of the Chemical Society's Chicago Section. Both awards pay tribute to Dr. Mulliken's pioneering work in molecular chemistry.

IN any given week a fantastic amount of correspondence, news releases, newspaper clippings, etc., reaches our desk. Often there does not seem to be any relationship between these items. Not infrequently, however, further reflection does disclose a pattern—something like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle being fitted into place. Last week was a good example. First, we received a letter from a well known professor and head of the chemistry department of a midwestern state university, discussing salaries in the academic field. He feels that most people are unaware of the serious plight of associate and full professors in many universities. He cited the case of a midwestern university that paid $5500 to get a good man on the staff when there were about 10 associate professors receiving $6500 to $7000. A canvas of 160 different college and university chemistry departments regarding policies on student laboratory and breakage fees, together with methods of keeping records and refunds on student breakage, has revealed several interesting observations.

IV.—Note on a Perforated Silica Plate for excluding Flame Gases from a Crucible during Ignition

The device shown in the accompanying sketch has been in use in the Chemistry Department of the University of Edinburgh for some time. It consists of a silica plate, 5 inches square, with a hole bored in it of such size as to admit a crucible to one-half of its depth. The silica plate is held in an inclined position by a clamp.By this means the flame gases are excluded from the interior of the crucible during an ignition. With this device calcium carbonate in a platinum crucible is quickly reduced to oxide with a good bunsen burner, while with a Mecker burner the reduction is complete in a few minutes even when a porcelain crucible is used. The device is also useful for cases such as the ignition of nickel oxide, where there is a danger of reduction. For the estimation of sulphur in coal some such device is absolutely necessary to exclude the flame gases.
