DIODE LASER-INDUCED GUM ARABIC-G-ACRYLIC ACID

Aim of this study is to synthesis Gum Arabic-g- Acrylic acid using laser light as initiator to synthesis clean product that is free from any trace's chemicals substances. Firstly the graft of acrylic acid on Gum Arabic, initiated by (C.A.N), will be study under a nitrogen gas to get reaction conditions such as graft copolymerization temperature, reaction time, and Gum Arabic, monomer, and initiator concentrations. Percentage of graft efficiency (% GE) and percentage of graft yield (% GY) will be collocated. Graft copolymer will be recognized using FTIR Spectroscopy, (TGA) analysis, (XRD) diffraction and (SEM) microscope. The graft will be later used in drug delivery carrier to control cancer in brain and matrices for colon aiming medicine delivery systems. This study focused to new trends and latest developments in this area where laser light was found to be efficient and clean method for synthesis GA-g-Acrylic Acid.

Photosynthesis enhancement in four marine microalgal species exposed to expanded polystyrene leachate.

Due to its widespread use, large amounts of expanded polystyrene (EPS) have been released into the marine environment, where it is broken down into small pieces with large surface areas. As such, chemical additives may be released into the environment, which can affect marine organisms; however, studies of the effects of such additives are lacking. We assessed the effects of leachate from EPS on the photosynthetic activities of four microalgal species (Dunaliella salina, Scenedesmus rubescens, Chlorella saccharophila, and Stichococcus bacillaris). They were exposed to EPS leachate for seven days and their photosynthetic activities were analyzed based on seven parameters. Overall, leachate exposure increased photosynthetic activity in all four species, albeit to different degrees and showing slightly different trends among the seven parameters. Based on chemical analysis, hexabromocyclododecane concentrations were higher in small-fragment leachate, whereas UV326 concentrations were higher in low-concentration-large-sphere leachate; bisphenol-A and total organic carbon showed no major differences among leachates. Thus, we speculate that exposure to trace chemicals influenced microalgal photosynthesis and overall growth. These results support further investigation of the impacts of plastic debris and chemical additives on marine ecosystems and organisms.

A fast approximation for adaptive wavelength selection for tunable infrared chemical sensors

Active mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy with tunable lasers is a leading technology for standoff detection of trace chemicals. Traditionally, the laser wavelength is swept to sample its tuning range uniformly without regard to how informative particular wavelengths may be. In contrast, this paper presents an adaptive technique to control the sequence of wavelengths, which the system samples in order to maximize chemical identification accuracy while minimizing measurement time and power consumption. Realtime adaptive wavelength selection is enabled by an approximation, which operates ∼40 000× faster than the full calculation. Application of this technique to synthetic data suggests that it can reduce the number of wavelengths required (and hence the measurement time) by a factor of two relative to an evenly spaced grid, with even higher gains for chemicals with weak signatures. While this paper focuses on MIR sensors using external cavity quantum cascade lasers, the technique is applicable to any system that has a tunable element and appropriate data characteristics.

Does epigenetic 'memory' of early-life stress predispose to chronic pain in later life? A potential role for the stress regulator FKBP5.

Animal behaviours are affected not only by inherited genes but also by environmental experiences. For example, in both rats and humans, stressful early-life events such as being reared by an inattentive mother can leave a lasting trace and affect later stress response in adult life. This is owing to a chemical trace left on the chromatin attributed to so-called epigenetic mechanisms. Such an epigenetic trace often has consequences, sometimes long-lasting, on the functioning of our genes, thereby allowing individuals to rapidly adapt to a new environment. One gene under such epigenetic control is FKBP5, the gene that encodes the protein FKPB51, a crucial regulator of the stress axis and a significant driver of chronic pain states. In this article, we will discuss the possibility that exposure to stress could drive the susceptibly to chronic pain via epigenetic modifications of genes within the stress axis such as FKBP5. The possibility that such modifications, and therefore, the susceptibility to chronic pain, could be transmitted across generations in mammals and whether such mechanisms may be evolutionarily conserved across phyla will also be debated. Wafer‐Scale Polymer‐Based Transparent Nanocorals with Excellent Nanoplasmonic Photothermal Stability for High‐Power and Superfast SERS Imaging

AbstractPolymer‐based surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates offer distinctive advantages such as low‐cost and high optical transparency which allows direct detection of trace chemicals on target surfaces and easy microfluidic integration. However, incident‐laser‐induced localized surface plasmon resonances can generate heat that deform the polymer and significantly reduce the intensities of recorded SERS signals. Herein, a novel wafer‐scale polymer‐based transparent nanocoral (WTNC) SERS substrate with 3D electromagnetic “hotspots” is presented. Its fabrication is simple and lithography‐free. The novel SERS substrate demonstrates excellent nanoplasmonic heat resistance, high SERS sensitivity, and unmatched SERS signal uniformity with a relative standard deviation of ≈6% across 80 mm. Excellent photothermal stability is achieved by highly crosslinking SU‐8, a negative epoxy photoresist, raising its initial degradation temperature to ≈230 °C, much higher than the glass transition temperature of state‐of‐the‐art thermalplasts used in SERS substrates, including polyethylene terephthalate and poly(methyl methacrylate). The WTNC substrate can withstand very high laser irradiance of up to 300 kW cm−2, enabling superfast SERS imaging of analytes in extremely small quantities. A high resolution SERS image containing 10 201 spectra of ≈44 amol trans‐1,2‐bis(4‐pyridyl)ethylene is obtainable in <5 min. The WTNC substrate pushes the state‐of‐the‐art in polymer‐based SERS substrates and has great potential for rapid routine analyses.

Suspect screening of plastic-related chemicals in northern pike (Esox lucius) from the St. Lawrence River, Canada

Environmental contaminant monitoring traditionally relies on targeted analysis, and very few tools are currently available to monitor “unexpected” or “unknown” compounds. In the present study, a non-targeted workflow (suspect screening) was developed to investigate plastic-related chemicals and other environmental contaminants in a top predator freshwater fish species, the northern pike, from the St. Lawrence River, Canada. Samples were extracted using sonication-assisted liquid extraction and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time of flight mass spectrometry (HPLC-QTOF-MS). Ten bisphenol compounds were used to test the analytical performances of the method, and satisfactory results were obtained in terms of instrumental linearity (r2 > 0.97), recoveries, (86.53–119.32%), inter-day precision and method detection limits. The non-targeted workflow data processing parameters were studied, and the peak height filters (peak filtering step) were found to influence significantly the capacity to detect and identify trace chemicals in pike muscle extracts. None of the ten bisphenol analogues were detected in pike extracts suggesting the absence of accumulation for these chemicals in pike muscle. However, the non-targeted workflow enabled the identification of diethyl phthalate (DEP) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) in pike extracts. This approach thus can be also applied to various contaminants in other biological matrices and environmental samples.

Composition and Toxicity of Biogas Produced from Different Feedstocks in California.

Biogas is a renewable energy source composed of methane, carbon dioxide, and other trace compounds produced from anaerobic digestion of organic matter. A variety of feedstocks can be combined with different digestion techniques that each yields biogas with different trace compositions. California is expanding biogas production systems to help meet greenhouse gas reduction goals. Here, we report the composition of six California biogas streams from three different feedstocks (dairy manure, food waste, and municipal solid waste). The chemical and biological composition of raw biogas is reported, and the toxicity of combusted biogas is tested under fresh and photochemically aged conditions. Results show that municipal waste biogas contained elevated levels of chemicals associated with volatile chemical products such as aromatic hydrocarbons, siloxanes, and certain halogenated hydrocarbons. Food waste biogas contained elevated levels of sulfur-containing compounds including hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, and sulfur dioxide. Biogas produced from dairy manure generally had lower concentrations of trace chemicals, but the combustion products had slightly higher toxicity response compared to the other feedstocks. Atmospheric aging performed in a photochemical smog chamber did not strongly change the toxicity (oxidative capacity or mutagenicity) of biogas combustion exhaust.

Snowflake-like gold nanoparticles as SERS substrates for the sensitive detection of organophosphorus pesticide residues

Representing tremendous enhancement effect for the Raman signal of trace chemicals, branched gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) are particularly attractive as surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates, though precise morphology control during synthesis might remain challenging. Herein, snowflake-like gold nanoparticles served as SERS substrates were successfully prepared by reducing chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) with ascorbic acid in aqueous solutions of tetradecylpiperidinium (C14PDB) surfactant. At a C14PDB/HAuCl4 molar concentration ratio of 4.2/1 and a reaction time of 6 h, the Au NPs resembled hexagonal snowflakes were produced. The snowflake-like Au NPs substrates performed great SERS activity and afforded limits of detection around 3 × 10−9 mol L−1 in aqueous rhodamine 6G (R6G) solutions and 1 × 10−8 mol L−1 for organophosphorus pesticides in solution. And applying these SERS substrates for practical detection on five fruit or vegetable peels, the detection limit of parathion-methyl, triazophos and phosmet on apple peels was 0.026 ng cm−2, 0.031 ng cm−2 and 0.032 ng cm−2, respectively. SERS results suggest that snowflake-like Au NPs used as SERS substrates hold great promise for the detection of organophosphorus pesticides at trace concentrations.

Physicochemical and toxicological characterization of hazardous wastes from an old glasswork dump at southeastern part of Sweden

More than 34 old glasswork sites in the southeastern part of Sweden pose a permanent threat to human and environmental health due to the presence of toxic trace elements in open dumps with glass waste. The possibility of leaching of trace elements from different fractions of the disposed waste needed to be assessed. In the present investigation, leachate from a mixture of soil and waste glass of particle sizes of less than 2 mm (given the name fine fraction) was characterized by analyzing the pH (7.3), total organic content (TOC < 2%), organic matter content (4.4%), moisture content (9.7%), chemical oxygen demand (COD, 163 mg/kg) and trace elements content, being the values in accordance to the Swedish guidelines for landfilling of inert materials. However, very high trace elements content was found in the fine fraction as well as in all colors of waste glass, whose values were compatible to hazardous waste landfill class. Tests with Lepidium sativum growing in the fine fraction as substrate revealed chronic toxicity expressed as inhibition of root biomass growth in 11 out of 15 samples. Additionally, leachate from fine fractions posed acute toxicity to genetically modified E. coli (Toxi-Chromotest). This study highlights the importance of combining physicochemical characterization with toxicity tests for both solid waste and leachate obtained from different waste fractions for proper hazardousness assessment supporting decision making on remediation demands.

Cytotoxic and genotoxic assessment of 2-chloropyridine using Allium cepa ana-telophase and comet test

2-Chloropyridine (2-CPY) is an important precursor of cosmetics, pesticides and other pharmaceutical products and it is also defined as trace chemical in industrial wastewater as the products of the metabolites of agricultural chemical products and river pollutants. In this study, the effects of 2-CPY on mitotic index (MI), mitotic phase frequencies, chromosome aberrations (CAs) and DNA damage in Allium cepa root cells were investigated with Allium ana-telophase and comet assay. Concentrations of 0.5xEC50 (25 ppm), EC50 (50 ppm) and 2xEC50 (100 ppm) of 2-CPY, Methyl methanesulfonate (MMS-10 ppm, positive control) and distilled water (negative control) were applied to A. cepa roots for 24, 48, 72 and 96 h. 2-CPY showed a cytotoxic effect by reducing root growth and MI, but also showed genotoxic effect by increasing CAs (disturbed ana-telophase, chromosome laggards, stickiness, bridges and polyploidy) and DNA damage at substantial levels. The amount of 2-CPY was shown to be increased statistically in both duration and dose by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). 2-CPY should be used carefully and investigated its cyto-genotoxic effects with other toxicology test systems.

The San Gregorio Magno lacustrine basin (Campania, southern Italy): improved characterization of the tephrostratigraphic markers based on trace elements and isotopic data

ABSTRACTCentral–southern Italy is one of the most suitable areas in the world for tephrostratigraphic studies, owing to the numerous volcanic sources with explosive activity during the Pleistocene. This work presents a systematic investigation of the chemical (trace elements) and isotopic (Sr and Nd) compositions of the main tephra markers within lacustrine sediments of the San Gregorio Magno Basin (Campania, southern Italy). This study: (i) provides full geochemical (trace elements and isotopes) characterization of eight significant Upper Pleistocene marker layers (X‐6, X‐5, C‐22, MEGT/Y‐7, CI/Y‐5, C‐10, Y‐3, NYT/C2) widely dispersed over the Mediterranean area; (ii) proposes a new tephra marker for Marine Isotope Stage 7, dated to 240 ka; and (iii) refines the correlations of tephra levels belonging to the investigated sequence. This study highlights that in most cases the Nd isotope composition of the glass and Sr isotope composition of the coexisting minerals are more reliable than 87Sr/86Sr of the glass, and hence is more helpful as a further tool for tephrostratigraphic correlations, as recently proposed in the literature. Moreover, this study is a first step towards the construction of a complete geochemical database for future tephra investigations in the Mediterranean area. A powdered orange peel combined carboxymethyl chitosan and its acylated derivative for the emulsification of marine diesel and 2T-oil with different qualities of water

The traces of hazardous chemicals used in oil spill response have harmed marine creatures with long-term cytotoxic impacts, so, a greener alternative is to use biodegradable components in the dispersant formulation. This study demonstrates the efficiency of carboxymethylated and acylated chitosan combined with powdered orange peel (OP-D) in the emulsification of marine diesel and 2T-oil with different qualities of water. OP-D particles undergo Pickering emulsions, whereas the amphiphilic behaviour of the Blend and hydrophobically modified carboxymethyl chitosan-orange peels (CSOP-A) favours conventional emulsions through steric and electrostatic stabilization. The emulsion formation rate was maximum with OP-D in saline water and autonomous of the water quality with Blend. Additionally, different hydrophobic moieties on the surface of the Blend and CSOP-A affected the oil droplets' stabilization rate. Changing pH altered the surface properties of particles and hence the nature of the formed emulsion range from gel-like to creamy, suggesting particle-particle to particle-oil interactions. An increase in electrolyte concentration enhanced the coalescence rate of marine diesel with CSOP-A. The oil droplet size in the formed emulsion increases with a temperature decrease up to 2 °C, and the emulsion stabilization rate was <10% at −20 °C. The traces of these synthesized materials were <1000 mg L−1 in the water phase after the removal of oils. Since these materials are bio-based, their presence in the ecosystem is less hazardousness than commercial dispersants.

Atmospheric atomic bromine measured

The first direct measurements of atomic bromine in the atmosphere confirm that the trace chemical plays an important role in reactions that result in depletion of low-lying ozone and deposition of toxic mercury on land (Proc. Routine Reporting of Environmental Risk: The First Traces of Micropollutants in the German Press

ABSTRACTThis article analyzes the emergence of a new environmental issue in the German press. Since the 1990s, scientists have detected traces of pharmaceuticals, hormones and chemicals in all segments of the water cycle. These micropollutants have negative effects on aquatic life and might affect human health. Their sources are manifold and include private households. Yet although micropollutants of are direct concern to media audiences, they are a challenging topic for news reporting. Although this issue is systemic and fraught with uncertainty, it does not easily translate into news stories. Our content analysis of 444 articles (1995–2015) reveals that the societal risk was rarely presented as a stand-alone topic. Instead, the issue was mostly covered as part of local routine reporting and framed as a challenge for experts to solve. Over time, the reporting became more managerial, while media framings of micropollutants gained more substance and scope. We contend that local routine reporting should receive more attention as a public forum for addressing emerging environmental concerns.

Investigation on the near-field evolution of industrial plumes from metalworking activities

In a context where a significant fraction of the population lives near industrial areas, the main objectives of this study are to provide (a) new data on PM2.5 chemical compositions, heavy-metal concentrations and trace gases released by metalworking activities and (b) new information on the near-field evolution (up to about a thousand meters) of such industrial plumes in terms of particle chemical composition and size distribution. For that purpose, a one-month field campaign was performed in an industrial area near the city of Dunkirk (Northern France), combining measurements of atmospheric dynamics and physico-chemical characterization of air masses. Comparisons between several elemental ratios (mainly Mn/Fe), particle size distributions and volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations at the stacks and at a near-field site suggest that plumes of a ferromanganese alloy plant were quickly mixed with pollutants emitted by other sources (mainly other industries, possibly traffic and sea spray), in particular a neighboring steelworks, before reaching the sampling site. This led to the emergence of secondary particles related to condensation and/or aggregation phenomena inside the plumes. Metalworking emissions were also identified as a source of new particle formation, formed through the emission of gaseous precursors and their fast transformation and condensation, over a timescale of minutes before reaching the near-field site 800 m downwind. Ultrafine particles emitted at the stacks also quickly agglomerated to form larger particles before reaching the near-field site. These results show that, even over short distances, the chemical composition and size distribution of metalworking plumes may evolve rapidly and the characteristics of particles at the boundary of an industrial area (especially in contiguous urban areas) may differ from those emitted directly at the stacks.

Differential Fractionation of Rhyolites During the Course of Crustal Extension, Western Afar (Ethiopian Rift)

AbstractWe report field observation, age, chemical (major and trace elements), and isotope (Sr‐Nd‐Pb) data for felsic volcanic rocks from Central Afar and adjacent western margin. Investigated volcanic rocks are dominantly rhyolites with minor trachytes, and they are geochemically similar. Their ages range from ~30 Ma (prerift stage), ~20 Ma (early synrift), ~8–4 Ma (main thinning event) to ~2.5–0.1 Ma (late synrift/continental breakup), representing the entire volcanic‐tectonic events that occurred episodically. Major element variations are consistent with fractionation of gabbroic cumulates. Trace element and isotope data preclude an origin by crustal anatexis; the rhyolites are rather genetically linked to the associated basalts and variously contaminated by the crust during differentiation of magmas. Chemical and isotopic data of the rhyolites support an origin by open system differentiation at deep crustal levels (hot wall rock and high r = rate of assimilation/rate of crystallization) and shallow crustal levels (cold wall rock and low r) with a change in the composition of the assimilated material from lower crustal to upper crustal type. Assimilation appears to decrease in recent times with Quaternary rhyolites, emplaced nearby the active magmatic segments in Afar, which exhibit the isotopic compositions closest to original mantle signature. This is compatible with a crust below the active magmatic segments resulting from important addition of juvenile basic magmas. Such results and interpretations provide actual constrains to suggest that the present‐day stage is probably very close to continental breakup, which will be achieved once the continental crust will be entirely replaced by new magmatic crust.

Fiber-optrode SERS probes using plasmonic silver-coated gold nanostars

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based molecular sensing has emerged as a powerful tool in a wide variety of fields ranging from environmental monitoring, biomedical diagnostics to security applications. As versatile SERS probes, fiber-optrodes (i.e., a SERS substrate integrated on optical fibers) can simultaneously guide excitation laser and collect the Raman signal, enabling remote and in situ sensing capabilities. This characteristic feature makes fiber-optrodes ideal for hazardous environments or for field-ready applications, where sample manipulation has to be minimal. In this paper, we firstly report the development of a fiber-optrode using silver-coated gold nanostars (Au@Ag NS) as highly enhancing SERS active substrate. These optrodes take advantage of the excellent photonic properties of Au@Ag NS to achieve ultra-sensitive sensing properties. Through the immobilization of the Au@Ag NS nanoparticles and the optimization of the optrode-configuration, the proposed SERS sensor’s analytical figures of merit are investigated in detail. The optrode developed herein has a promising prospect for in-field and remote test for trace chemicals and for applications such as direct detection of food additives and biotargets.

Analysis of the Law of Chinese Pharmacopoeia Containing Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata

The 2015 edition of the Chinese Pharmacopoeia contains the Chinese patent medicine containing Rehmanniae radix praeparata as the data source, and uses Excel 2013 and SPSS Modeler 14.1 statistical software as tools to analyze the statistical processing and association rules of the Chinese medicines included in the standard. Result: Among the total prescriptions included in the standard, the top five traditional Chinese medicines with the highest cumulative frequency are Rehmanniae radix praeparata (132 times, 100%), Angelica sinensis radix (78 times, 59.1%), Paeonia Radix alba (58 times, 43.9%),Chuanxiong rhizoma (56 times, 42.4%), Glycyrrhiza radix et rhizoma (49 times, 37.1%).The dosage form containing it is widely distributed. By analyzing the association rules of traditional Chinese medicine containing Rehmanniae radix praeparata, 16 kinds of commonly used drugs are obtained. There are 10 kinds of traditional Chinese medicine clinical diseases in the main diseases. In the analysis of association rules, 20 kinds of medicines with the highest correlation intensity for treating renal diseases are found, and 17 kinds of medicines with the highest correlation intensity for treating menstruation, belt and miscellaneous diseases are 17 kinds. Conclusion: Through the analysis of traditional Chinese medicine containing Rehmanniae radix praeparata, the drug rule and compatibility characteristics of Rehmanniae radix praeparata in different diseases were reflected. Rehmanniae radix praeparata, a processed product of Rehmanniae radix praeparata. It contains sterols, sugars, retinoins, amino acids, dignystatin (ABD, etc.) and various chemical trace elements [1].Modern pharmacological studies have shown that Rehmanniae radix praeparata has anti-anxiety, anti-tumor, anti-oxidation, promote hematopoiesis, improve memory and other pharmacological effects [2-4].Clinically, Liuwei Dihuang Pills can reduce the recovery period of cerebral infarction [5], chronic nephritis, type 2 diabetes, chronic aplastic anemia, and delay aging. Qiju Dihuang Pill is mostly used for the treatment of hypertension, and has better treatment for hyperlipemia, senile liver and kidney yin deficiency type 2 diabetes, senile cataract, chronic hepatitis B, recurrent aphthous ulcer and cervical spondylosis. Perspectives on trace chemical safety and chemophobia: risk communication and risk management.

Safety issues regarding consumer products contaminated with trace amounts of chemicals are of great concern to consumers, with the degree of concern occasionally escalating to the psychological syndrome, chemophobia, i.e., the fear of chemicals. Hazardous substances frequently implicated in safety concerns include heavy metals (arsenic, mercury, cadmium, and lead), volatile organic compounds (VOC) such as benzene and o-toluidine, pesticides, carcinogens, radioactive substances, and endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDC) such as bisphenol A and phthalates. To improve communication of risk to society, members of academia, government, consumer organizations, and industry participated in this workshop to discuss and exchange perspectives on trace chemical safety. From the perspective of academia, integrated risk assessments need to be implemented to encompass various exposure sources and routes. The identification and investigation of new exposure-related biomarkers are also recommended to verify direct causal relationships between specific chemical exposure and effects on human health. As for regulation, governments need to establish and maintain acceptable limits for trace chemicals in products. In addition, harmonized efforts need to be undertaken among government agencies to share regulatory limits and effectively control trace chemicals in consumer products. Manufacturers need to faithfully abide by Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines, monitor sources of contamination, and minimize these for consumer safety. To effectively resolve safety issues arising from trace chemicals exposure, collaborative efforts are needed involving academia, government, consumer organizations, and industry. Further, scientific evidence-based risk assessment is a critical approach to effectively manage trace chemical safety issues.

Tin diselenide van der Waals materials as new candidates for mid-infrared waveguide chips.

Mid-infrared is a spectral region of molecular vibration and rotation modes and thus, it has been widely used in chem/bio analysis. On-chip MIR waveguides combining attenuated total reflection spectroscopy provide an efficient way to minimize equipment size and benefit chemical trace analysis. But, inevitable surface roughness-induced scattering is harmful for waveguide mode propagation in traditional sensors. Two-dimensional materials are natural thin slabs with atomic-scale smooth surfaces and thus could be excellent for building weak surface scattering waveguides. Here, we used near-field microscopy to investigate a waveguide mode of 1T tin diselenide slabs at nanoscale resolution in 5.13-6.57 μm and manipulate the mode strengths and wavelengths by controlling the slab thickness. This work extends two-dimensional materials as building blocks for integrated MIR chips.
