THIN SANDWICH COURSES make particularly heavy demands for industrial training places for their students, as each student needs four different types of training in his four‐year course. This Department aims to select the four from among the seven or so considered suitable: the industrial chemistry laboratory, the engineering workshop, the pilot plant, the chemical engineering research laboratory, full‐scale production units, commissioning of new plant, and the design office. Some of these types of experience are relatively easy to obtain in the United Kingdom, whereas others, particularly experience in the engineering workshops, are much harder to come by.

Classification of Topics Relating to Corrosion★

Abstract A classification system intended as a basis for the compilation of a complete corrosion bibliography and for the recording and indexing of technical enquiries is described. It is based on the Abstract Filing Index, published by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers. Rearranged and expanded, it is capable of accommodating all the subject headings appearing in the corrosion bibliography, initiated by W. H. J. Vernon and subsequently maintained in card index form in the Chemical Research Laboratory, Teddington. Classification and index are briefly described, and examples are given of their use and application. 1.4

CORROSION RESEARCH LABORATORIES‐14: D.S.I.R. CORROSION OF METALS GROUP, NATIONAL CHEMICAL LABORATORY, TEDDINGTON

The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has been responsible for investigations on the corrosion of metals since 1924, when a Corrosion Research Committee was set up with the late Dr. G. D. Bengough as its first senior investigator. In 1927 research on atmospheric corrosion directed by Dr. W. H. J. Vernon was taken over by D.S.I.R. and in 1928 the Group was transferred from the Royal School of Mines in London to the then Chemical Research Laboratory at Teddington. This establishment had been inaugurated several years previously as a separate D.S.I.R. station situated in the same grounds as the National Physical Laboratory. Quite recently it has achieved the status of National Chemical Laboratory; but the ‘C.R.L.’ (now the ‘N.C.L.’) has always derived great benefit from its proximity to its much larger and older sister station.

Experiments with an authentic, typical, starch-positive culture ofA. pasteurianum have shown that the well known propensity of this species to lose the power of starch-production, (thereby becoming indistinguishable fromA. rancens) may occur in two different was: A culture of the above mentioned starch-producing strain, together with the starchless mutant obtained from it, have been deposited with the N.C.I.B., Chemical Research Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex, where they have been immediately freezedried.

Experimental methods for the determination of purity by cryoscopy in current use at the chemical research laboratory, tedd1ngton

A description is given of apparatus devised to evaluate purity by freezing-point and meltingpoint procedures. Both methods yield regular curves from which data can be obtained in the manner described to determine the purity after simple treatment. Examples of experimental melting curves and results arc given. As a means of providing process control in the production of high-purity chemical compounds, an apparatus has been developed which simultaneously makes a comparison of purity between several samples, one of which is a reference specimen of known purity, by plotting their differential melting-point curves.

The Measurement of the Dielectric Constant of Standard Liquids

New determinations have been made of the dielectric constants of benzene, cyclohexane, dichlorethane and nitrobenzene with the object of providing values of a higher accuracy than has hitherto been available for four standard liquids covering the range of values commonly required. Liquids of specially high purity were obtained with the co-operation of Professor J. Timmermans of Brussels and Dr. Herington of the Chemical Research Laboratory, Teddington, and the measurements were made by the a.c. bridge technique developed at the National Physical Laboratory for precision capacitance measurement and also by a cavity resonator method. Part I of the paper discusses the general problem and the special features of the capacitor designed to receive the liquids and surveys the results obtained. Part II gives details of the measurements made by capacitance methods at frequencies from 50 c/s to 10 kc/s, and Part III describes the measurements made at microwave frequencies. The values obtained confirm estimates of the most reliable values and their probable accuracy published in 1951 by A. A. Maryott and E. R. Smith as a result of a survey of existing data made at the National Bureau of Standards, Washington. It is considered that the new values narrow the range of uncertainty by a factor varying from 3 to 10 for the different liquids. The accuracy obtained for benzene at audio frequencies was within about 0.01%; at 9000 Mc/s the accuracy was a trifle worse but the results show clearly that although the dielectric constant exceeds the square of the optical refractive index by about 1%, no measurable diminution in dielectric constant occurs in passing from 50 c/s to 9000 Mc/s. A considerable increase in power absorption is however noticeable at 9000 Mc/s and an even greater increase at 25 000 Mc/s, and it is shown that this absorption is not entirely dependent on the water that most samples of benzene contain and that can only be removed by weeks of drying treatment. The necessity of applying such treatments is a serious disadvantage to the use of benzene as a standard liquid for measurements of dielectric constant, and cyclohexane, which is free from this disadvantage, is recommended instead.

Fretting Corrosion

Fretting corrosion is defined as the particular kind of damage which occurs when two surfaces in contact experience slight periodic relative movement. Examples are quoted of its appearance in very diverse circumstances such as press-fitted hubs, riveted structures, and electrical switching gear. It can lead to loss of fit, or seizure, and is a possible source of fatigue cracks. There is as yet no clear indication whether the appearance of cracks in fretted regions is due to the pits formed acting as stress raisers, although their shape could very well produce such an effect, or whether the conditions producing fretting also cause surface fatigue. The amount of damage increases approximately linearly with increasing amplitude of relative motion and increasing normal loading. It also increases as the temperature is lowered or as the atmosphere is more corrosive. The fretting corrosion of steel is reduced in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. There appear to be three possible processes involved: (1) mechanical abrasion by grinding or welding, (2) abrasion by hard particles of oxide, (3) continual mechanical rupture of otherwise protective oxide films. Probably all three mechanisms may be important in different cases, but most of the experimental data for the fretting corrosion of steel is best explained by the third mechanism. Preventive measures are classified according to their effectiveness in ( a) reducing relative movement by increased friction force, such as increased normal load, electroplated metal coatings of high coefficient of friction, elastic inserts, ( b) reducing friction by lubrication or low friction inserts, such as polytetrafluorethylene, ( c) excluding the atmosphere with rubber gaskets or flooding with lubricant, ( d) increasing the abrasion resistance of the surfaces, and ( e) separating the surfaces. It is emphasized that a measure which is a remedy in one case may aggravate the damage in another, indicating the need for careful diagnosis. Foreword By Dr. U. R. Evans On 21st May 1953 a Conference on Service Corrosion Problems was held at the Chemical Research Laboratory, Teddington, Middlesex. This was organized by the Inter-service Corrosion and Electro-deposition Committee—one of the Standing Committees of the Inter-service Metallurgical Research Council. The Conference was attended by representatives of all the Services. In the course of the discussion several speakers emphasized the importance of frettage in Service problems, and expressed a desire for further information on the matter. As a result, the Committee organized on 8th December 1953, a special discussion on the problem of frettage, which was attended by many persons with specialist knowledge of that subject, including four members of the Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratory of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Thorntonhall, Scotland, where frettage research is actively proceeding, and numerous members of Service departments and industrial firms where frettage had caused trouble. The expressions of opinion revealed some diverse points of view and, after the meeting, the author who had been present, performed a real service by re-marshalling the conclusions in logical order and concise form—admirably suited to help those who had attended the meeting. However, it was considered desirable that a longer paper should be produced—suitable for the much wider section of the public which is concerned either with the practical or theoretical aspects of frettage; this would not be restricted to information produced at the meeting, and would make full use of work published, to some extent after the two meetings mentioned above, in the United States of America and on the Continent. The present paper by the author is the result.

DEPARTMENT OF SCIENTIFIC AND INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH

THE corrosion of metals group of the Chemical Research Laboratory has recently been concerned with cheaper and more easily operated methods of testing the corrosion resistance of metals and the protective value of different types of coating. In this connection the ‘C.R.L. beaker‐test apparatus’ has been extensively used, and the Institute of Petroleum has approved it as a means of evaluating protective grease preparations and the temporary protection afforded by light oils. The apparatus has also been modified to test the extent of attack by marine and industrial atmospheres.

Dr. Vernon receives the Whitney award. Before leaving America to attend the symposium of the Corrosion Group of the Society of Chemical Industry, held in London from March 30 to April 1, F. L. La Que, vice‐president and manager of the Development and Research Division of the International Nickel Co. Inc., was charged with the special task of conveying this year's Whitney Award to Dr. W. H. J. Vernon, O.B.E. Dr. Vernon recently retired from his post as head of the corrosion section of the Chemical Research Laboratory of the D.S.I.R., Teddington.

Ion-Exchange Separations on Chemically Modified Cellulose

IN a study of methods for flame-proofing cotton fabrics, Dr. J. D. Guthrie et al., of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, have prepared a number of chemically modified cellulose fabrics and have described1 their ion-exchange properties. The same workers have modified the pH of sample solutions obtained during the preparation of protein from oil seed2 by addition of phosphorylated and aminated cotton fabrics. While suitable for this type of operation, the modified cellulose in fabric form is not a convenient material on which to carry out chromatographic separations, and the possibility of converting the fabric to pulp and then to paper has been explored. Using aminated and phosphorylated cotton fabrics as starting materials, experimental sheets of paper have been prepared by W. and R. Balston, Ltd., which have since been examined at the Chemical Research Laboratory. The preparation of sheets of paper with suitable chromatographic properties is still in the experimental stage; but the separation of a number of inorganic mixtures has been achieved with the materials so far available.
