Poetry in motion — an ode to free verse

Pharmacology and biotechnology: a career in clinical development

I first encountered the discipline of pharmacology at university, where I set out to do a degree in physiology. Thanks to the course unit system at Chelsea College in London, I took a general pharmacology course in my second year, decided that this was for me and subsequently specialized in pharmacology in my final year. I then went on to do my PhD in respiratory pharmacology at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, London. I was an br z~iuo pharmacologist, perhaps not so popular these days, but this provided me with a valuable perspective and immediately directed my research toward the aetiology and treatment of diseases. I began with asthma and this broadened to allergic diseases and inflammation and rheumatology, as I progressed through research jobs in the pharmaceutical industry. My first industrial job was with Sandoz where I worked in the respiratory group in Basle. This was an experience in many senses not just work! and provided me with the now rusty rudiments of German. At Sandoz I was fortunate to work in a group that had just taken an asthma drug to registration and this gave me an early insight into the workings of the industry beyond the laboratory clinical trials and product launches, for example.

Nursing research unit.

The Department of Nursing Studies at King's College, London (formerly Chelsea College) celebrated its tenth anniversary lest week with an impressive resume of past, present and future research projects. The event was also marked by the inaugural lecture of Jenifer Wilson-Barnett, recently appointed Professor of Nursing Studies at the Department, speaking on 'Nursing Values: Exploring the Cliches'. Fourteenth Annual Conference on Medieval and Renaissance Music King's College, London July, 1986

The Fourteenth Annual Conference on medieval and Renaissance Music was held at King's College, London (or more specifically in its annex, Chelsea College in King's Road), under the competent auspices of Dr. Mark Everist and his assistants Bob and 312 CristleJudd. An exceptionally well organized program had resulted in no more than four free papers out of a total of twenty-eight, so these too were grouped together as an opening session under the chairmanship of Brian Trowell; and it turned out to be as unified as any other, if French and Italian vocal music of the Renaissance is a unifying theme. Lawrence Bernstein opened with a close analysis of the musical characteristics of the Parisian chanson; Kathleen Powers examined the poetry of the madrigale spirituale; Honey Meconi looked at the chronological implications of Molinet's reference to La Rue in his Deploration on the death of Josquin; and Paula Higgins asked us to reconsider the supposed autobiographical significance of Busnois's chansons on Jacqueline de Hacqueville. A good start to an entertaining weekend.

The career paths of nursing graduates from Chelsea College, University of London

This study aimed to identify the career paths and future career plans of nursing graduates from Chelsea College, University of London. Self-completion questionnaires were sent to the 1981, 1982 and 1983 graduates ( N = 54). Employment patterns immediately after and 1, 2 and 3 yr after graduation are described. Most graduates selected careers in nursing, up to 3 yr after graduation. Hospital based clinical posts were most popular and many undertook further clinical courses. The long- and short-term career plans of graduates employed as nurses and those no longer nursing are described. Most graduates indicated that they intended to remain in nursing in the long term.

Generating language learning with CAL

At Chelsea College, the Computers in the Curriculum Project has been engaged in the ongoing development of Computer Assisted Learning Materials in a variety of disciplines. Since 1981, it has added language to these explorations. The work has followed two clear aims—that this material should foster the generation and use of language both at and away from the keyboard, and that the units should be so designed that the teachers can customise them with their own words and phrases. Three programs and their evaluation are described. The current development of a fourth, an adventure generator, is also described, and the issues raised are discussed.

Scientific Thinking through the Development of Formal Operations: training in the cognitive restructuring aspect of field‐independence

Abstract Experimental groups of first year pupils in an English rural comprehensive school were given materials designed to develop the cognitive restructuring aspect of field‐independence in an attempt to gain a parallel increase in formal operations. The Chelsea College Science Reasoning Task II (to test for formal‐operations) and the Group Embedded Figures Test (to test for field‐independence) were given to experimental and control groups before and after the intervention. A significant increase in the experimental group over the control group was found in both tests. This was interpreted as showing that an increase in the cognitive restructuring aspect of field‐independence was associated with an increase in formal operational thought in 11‐12year olds.

Professional and Theoretical Perspectives in Teacher Training: a school‐based study

Summary The article describes an action study undertaken jointly by the Chelsea College Centre for Science and Mathematics Education (University of London), the Universite des Sciences et des Techniques, Montpellier, and the Padagogische Hochschule, Neuss, which investigated the potential for a school‐based approach to teacher training. The study in the three institutions was supported by the Joint Studies Programme (JSP) of the Commission of the European Community for institutions of Higher Education in member States.
