Hydrothermal preparation of oxide (Ga2O3, ZnO, TiO2) and derivative nanoparticles

A brief review of our recent research on preparation and characterization of oxide nanoparticles and their derivatives by hydrothermal growth is presented. A series of Ga2O3 , ZnO, and TiO2 nanoparticles, as well derivative nanomaterials including GaN nanowires and ZnO/TiO2 nanocompostes have been prepared. Ga2O3 and ZnO nanopowders have been produced using metal nitrate hydrates as precursors, while Titanium isopropoxide was used for preparation of TiO2 nanopowders. GaN nanowires have been produced by nitridation of Ga2O3 nanomaterials. The produced nanomaterials have been characterized scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Ga2O3 nanoparticles doped with Eu3+ ions have been characterized by photoluminescence spectroscopy in order to assess their prospects in developing nanophosphors materials.

Exploiting in vitro potential and characterization of surface modified Zinc oxide nanoparticles of Isodon rugosus extract: Their clinical potential towards HepG2 cell line and human pathogenic bacteria.

Little is known about biogenically synthesized Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) from Isodon rugosus. Synthesis of metal oxide NPs from essential oil producing medicinal plants results in less harmful side effects to the human population as compared to chemically synthesized NPs. In this article, we report biogenic synthesis of ZnONPs from in vitro derived plantlets and thidiazuron (TDZ) induced callus culture of Isodon rugosus. Synthesized NPs were characterized using UV-spectra, XRD, FTIR, SEM and EDX. Furthermore, the NPs were evaluated for their potential cytotoxic (against HepG2 cell line) and antimicrobial (against drug resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) activities. Pure crystalline ZnONPs with hexagonal and triangular shapes were obtained as a result of callus extract (CE) and whole plant extract (WPE), respectively. ZnONPs showed potent cytotoxic and antimicrobial potential. The antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities of ZnONPs were found to be shape and surface bound phytochemicals dependent. CE mediated hexagonal ZnONPs showed superior anti-cancer and antimicrobial activities as compared to WPE mediated triangular shaped ZnONPs. It is concluded that biogenic ZnONPs have incredible potential as theranostic agents and can be adopted as useful drug delivery system in next generation treatment strategies.

Characterizing titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanoparticles in sunscreen spray.

Numerous commercial products contain titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs); however, many of these are not labelled as containing NPs. This study sought to develop an effective means of characterizing TiO2 and ZnO NPs in sunscreen sprays, including the size, shape and composition of the particles as well as their aggregation/agglomeration characteristics. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) coupled with a window-type microchip K-kit/copper grid and X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to characterize the oxide NPs. TME pre-treatment was performed using two approaches: using a conventional copper grid (requiring dilution) and using a K-kit (not requiring dilution). The use of K-kit in conjunction with XRD makes it possible to obtain direct measurements from samples that have not undergone pre-treatment, which could otherwise alter the nature of the samples, such as the degree of agglomeration. XRD was used to obtain information related to particle size and crystal structure. A strong correlation was observed between XRD and TEM measurements. The proposed measurement methods were shown to be highly effective in the characterization of oxide NPs in sunscreen sprays, providing consistent information related to NPs and their interactions in the formulations.

Development and Characterization of Thermosensitive Polymer- CoatedIron Oxide Nanoparticles as a Novel Ferrofluid

In this work, we aim to study the development and characterization of thermosensitive polymer-coated iron oxide nanoparticles as a novel ferroFluid (fF) with thermosensitive properties. For this purpose, polymerization was conducted in the presence of various ratios of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm), acrylamide (AAm) and N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) as monomers, and N,N´-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. Particles having average sizes of 8 nm and 8–10 nm were respectively observed for Fe3O4/fF and Fe3O4/polymers. As visualized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, both the coated and uncoated iron oxide nanoparticles were uniform in shape and seem to have been monodispersed. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) measurements of Fe3O4/VTES-fF and Fe3O4/Poly (NIPAAm- AAm NVP) at room temperature showed that they had a superparamagnetic nature with saturation magnetization values of 23.14 emu/g and 4.33 emu/g, respectively. In the thermosensitivity analysis, the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) was around 36-40°C, as determined by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. Furthermore, the polymerization of (NIPAAm-AAm-NVP) with the surface modified magnetic ferroFluid was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). These aqueous, stable, magnetic nanoparticles coated with temperature-sensitive polymers have attracted great attention because of their various applications in the fields of biotechnology and medicine.

Characterization of Oxide Nanoparticles in Al-Free and Al-Containing Oxide Dispersion Strengthened Ferritic Steels

Oxide nanoparticles in oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) ferritic steels with and without Al have been characterized by transmission electron microscopy. It is confirmed that most of the complex oxide particles consist of Y2TiO5 for 18Cr-ODS steel and YAlO3 or YAl5O12 for 18Cr5Al-ODS steel, respectivley. The addition of 5% Al in 18Cr-ODS steel leads to the formation of larger oxide particles and the reduction in their number density. For 18Cr-ODS steel, 87% of the oxide particles are coherent. The misfit strain of the coherent particles and a few semi-coherent particles is about 0.034 and 0.056, respectively. For 18Cr5Al-ODS steel, 75% of the oxide particles are semi-coherent, of which the misfit strain is 0.091 and 0.125, respectively. These results suggest that for the Al-containing ODS steel the Al addition accelerates the formation of semi-coherent oxide particles and its larger coherent and semi-coherent particles result in the larger misfit strain between the oxide particle and alloy matrix, indicating that the coherence of oxide nanoparticles in ODS steels is size-dependent.

Synthesis and Characterization of Oxide Nanoparticles by Plasma Assisted Spray Pyrolysis

Various oxide nano-sized powders were successfully prepared by ultrasonic spray pyrolysis using arc plasma under the air atmosphere. Particle size, morphology, crystal phase and crystallinity of as-prepared powders were characterized by SEM and XRD. They had spherical morphology with narrow size distribution.
