Studying Methylcellulose-Base Edible Films Properties by XRD, EDXRF and FTIR

The physicochemical of methylcellulose (MC) base edible films were investigated in this work. The characterization of MC used X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence (EDXRF) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy for investigated the crystalline, the composition element, and the intermolecular interaction, respectively. It was found that, the XRD pattern indicated MC has amorphous structure. The chemical composition by XRF reported that Silver (Ag) have been detect and the hydrogen bonding formation between MC investigated with FTIR spectra, which interpreted in terms of the symmetry distortion of hydroxyl stretch. Another that, the mechanical properties tensile strength (TS) elastic modulus (EM) and elongation (E) values were investigated.

Optimization grafting conditions and characterization of methyl cellulose grafted polyacrylonitrile copolymer

Methyl cellulose-graft-polyacrylonitrile (MC-g-PAN) copolymer was synthesized by free-radical polymerization using cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN) as an initiator in an aqueous medium. The characteristics were found to depend primarily on the polyacrylonitrile content rather than the graft density or the polyacrylonitrile chain length according to reaction parameters, such as CAN concentration, acrylonitrile concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time. The successful grafting was confirmed using various analytical tools including FTIR, 1H NMR, XPS, XRD, and TGA. The percentage of graft copolymerization increased with increasing monomer and CAN concentration. The mechanical properties of graft copolymers were measured and investigated as a function of the ratio of grafting.

Synthesis and characterization of methylcellulose from cellulose extracted from mango seeds for use as a mortar additive

Methylcellulose was produced from the fibers of Mangifera indica L. Ubá mango seeds. MCD and MCI methylcellulose samples were made by heterogeneous methylation, using dimethyl sulfate and iodomethane as alkylating agents, respectively. The materials produced were characterized for their thermal properties (DSC and TGA), crystallinity (XRD) and Degree of Substitution (DS) in the chemical route. The cellulose derivatives were employed as mortar additive in order to improve mortar workability and adhesion to the substrate. These properties were evaluated by means of the consistency index (CI) and bond tensile strength (TS) tests. The methylcellulose (MCD and MCI) samples had CI increased by 27.75 and 71.54% and TS increased by 23.33 and 29.78%, respectively, in comparison to the reference sample. Therefore, the polymers can be used to produce adhesive mortars.

A thermoreversible double gel: Characterization of a methylcellulose and κ-carrageenan mixed system in water by SAXS, DSC and rheology

Sol–gel and gel–sol thermal transition of methylcellulose/water, κ-carrageenan/water and methylcellulose/ κ-carrageenan/water mixtures was investigated utilizing small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and oscillatory rheological experiments in temperature regime from 20 to 80 °C. Methylcellulose (E461) and κ-carrageenan (E407) are well-known additives used for gelation in various nutrition and other products. The formulation and characterization of a mixed thermoreversible methylcellulose/ κ-carrageenan/water gel with very interesting double thermal transition gel–sol–gel upon heating was possible. This specific thermal behavior provides a liquid state of the system between the low-temperature and high-temperature gel-state and at the same time allows for the easy temperature tuning of the system's state. As such this system is suggested to be further tested as potential carrier for various functional colloidal systems.

Synthesis and characterization of methylcellulose from sugar cane bagasse cellulose

In the present paper, methylcellulose was produced from cellulose extracted of sugar cane bagasse, using dimethyl sulfate in heterogeneous conditions. The infrared spectra of the cellulose and of the methylcellulose present significant differences at the regions from 3600 to 2700 cm −1 and from 1500 to 800 cm −1. The ratio between the absorption intensities of the O H stretching band (∼3400 cm −1) and the C H stretching band (∼2900 cm −1) in the spectra of the methylated samples is lower than that in the cellulose spectrum, evidencing the methylation of the samples. The effect of using toluene and acetone during the synthesis was studied. Without using the solvent, the degree of substitution (DS) of the methylated sample was 0.70, reaching a DS of 1.2 when using acetone. The produced methylcellulose presents chemical and physical properties that increase its range of application and aggregate value to this agro-industrial residue.
