Temporal-spatial Distribution and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in the Surface Water of Ningbo

A total of 120 surface water samples were collected from industrial and commercial districts of Ningbo, China in the wet and dry seasons. The concentrations of six heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Fe) in the samples were measured, the temporal-spatial distribution characteristics of the six heavy metals were analyzed, and Pearson correlation coefficients of the six heavy metals were calculated. Combined with the temporal-spatial distribution characteristics and Pearson correlation coefficients of the six heavy metals, the main pollution sources of the two districts were analyzed, respectively. The risk of heavy metals in surface water to the exposed population was evaluated by calculating the health risk index and carcinogenic risk index. The results showed that the pollution characteristics of heavy metals in the surface water of Ningbo industrial district and commercial district differed greatly in different seasons. In the industrial district, the orders of the average concentration of heavy metals in the wet season and dry season were Fe>Zn>Ni>Pb>Cr>Cd and Fe>Zn>Cr>Ni>Pb>Cd, respectively. The concentrations of Cr, Cd, and Pb in the wet and dry seasons exceeded the class Ⅳ recommended values, following the degrees of Cr>Cd>>Pb and Pb>Cr=Cd, respectively. Sewage containing heavy metals was one of the major pollution sources. In the commercial district, the average concentrations of heavy metals in the wet season and dry season were in the order of Fe>Pb>Ni>Zn>Cd>Cr and Fe>Pb>Ni>Zn>Cr=Cd, respectively. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in the wet season exceeded the corresponding levels (class Ⅳ), and the degree followed Cd>Pb. Only Pb exceeded the standard in the dry season, with the exceeding standard rate of 60%. Road pollution containing heavy metals was the major pollution source, and heavy metals entered surface water mostly with surface runoff and precipitation. The carcinogenic risk posed by heavy metals in the surface water of the Ningbo industrial district and commercial district was very high, and the carcinogenic risk in the commercial district was much higher than that in the industrial district. The main carcinogen was Cr. Compared to the research results of the research group in 2015, the pollution degree of heavy metals has been greatly reduced. In the future, we still need to give adequate attention to the prevention and control of heavy metal pollution in surface water in Ningbo.

Heavy Metal Pollution Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Soil-crops System in Anhui Section of the Yangtze River Basin

In order to explore the pollution characteristics and health risks of heavy metals in a soil-crop system in the Anhui section of the Yangtze River basin, a total of 338 groups of soil samples from rice, wheat, and their roots were collected, and the contents of eight types of heavy metals were determined. Additionally, the pollution index method, potential ecological hazard, multivariate statistical analysis, and health risk were used to evaluate the heavy metal content in rice and wheat root soil. The results showed that Cd, Cu, Cr, and Ni in the soil had an obvious accumulation effect, and the pollution of rice root soil was more serious than that of wheat soil. The potential ecological risk was mild to moderate, which mainly came from the elements Cd and Hg. Multivariate statistical analysis showed that Cu, Pb, Zn, and Cd were industrial sources and agricultural sources; Cr and Ni were natural sources; and As and Hg were agricultural sources. The absorption and enrichment intensity of heavy metals by rice was in the order of Cd>Zn>Cu>Hg>Ni>As>Cr=Pb, and those in wheat were ordered as Zn>Cd>Cu>Hg>Ni>As=Pb>Cr. The root soil heavy metal health risk assessment indicated that oral intake was the main exposure route of non-carcinogenic risk, and children were more vulnerable to heavy metal pollution. Non-carcinogenic risk assessment showed that wheat root soil posed non-carcinogenic risk to children but no carcinogenic risk. Intake of rice and wheat had some degree of non-carcinogenic risk and unacceptable carcinogenic risk for both adults and children.

Evaluation of soil heavy metals pollution and the phytoremediation potential of copper-nickel mine tailings ponds.

Heavy metal pollution in soils caused by mining has led to major environmental problems around the globe and seriously threatens the ecological environment. The assessment of heavy metal pollution and the local phytoremediation potential of contaminated sites is an important prerequisite for phytoremediation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand the characteristics of heavy metal pollution around a copper-nickel mine tailings pond and screen local plant species that could be potentially suitable for phytoremediation. The results showed that Cd, Cu, Ni, and Cr in the soil around the tailings pond were at the heavy pollution level, Mn and Pb pollution was moderate, and Zn and As pollution was light; The positive matrix factorization (PMF) model results showed that the contributions made by industrial pollution to Cu and Ni were 62.5% and 66.5%, respectively, atmospheric sedimentation and agricultural pollution contributions to Cr and Cd were 44.6% and 42.8%, respectively, the traffic pollution contribution to Pb was 41.2%, and the contributions made by natural pollution sources to Mn, Zn, and As were 54.5%, 47.9%, and 40.0% respectively. The maximum accumulation values for Cu, Ni, Cr, Cd, and As in 10 plants were 53.77, 102.67, 91.10, 1.16 and 7.23 mg/kg, respectively, which exceeded the normal content of heavy metals in plants. Ammophila breviligulata Fernald had the highest comprehensive extraction coefficient (CEI) and comprehensive stability coefficient (CSI) at 0.81 and 0.83, respectively. These results indicate that the heavy metal pollution in the soil around the copper nickel mine tailings pond investigated in this study is serious and may affect the normal growth of plants. Ammophila breviligulata Fernald has a strong comprehensive remediation capacity and can be used as a remediation plant species for multiple metal compound pollution sites.

Spatial Distribution Characteristics and Potential Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Sludge of Shanghai Sewage Treatment Plant: A Case Study

Sewage treatment is an important indicator of the urban environment and an important method of sustainable development. In this paper, the spatial distribution characteristics of 8 heavy metals in sewage sludge from 44 sewage treatment plants in Shanghai were analyzed. The pollution degree and potential ecological risk of heavy metals in sludge were evaluated by the Nemerow comprehensive pollution index and Hakanson potential ecological risk index. First, the single factor pollution index of heavy metals was ranked. The Nemerow comprehensive pollution index showed that five sewage treatment plants in Nanxiang, Dongqu, Liantang, Songjiang west, and Xinhe were heavily polluted. Second, the single factor potential ecological risk index of each heavy metal was analyzed. Finally, it is concluded that in the monitoring and control of sewage treatment, Shanghai should pay attention to the sewage treatment plants with high potential ecological risks and gain an excellent performance in the reduction in the emissions of pollution sources, so as to improve environmental quality and reduce the potential ecological risks. This paper provides the basis for studying the characteristics of heavy metal pollution of sewage sludge.

Effects of Heavy Metal Pollution in Soil of Coal Gangue Area on Germination and Seedlings of Typical Remediation Plants

The problem of soil heavy metal pollution caused by coal gangue accumulation areas is becoming more and more serious. In situ plant remediation technology has become one of the most promising methods to solve heavy metal soil pollution due to its advantages of the green economy. In this experiment, the characteristics of heavy metal pollution in the shallow soil (vertical depth 0~20 cm) 300 m outside the square circle of a typical coal gangue accumulation area in the Fengfeng Mining Area of Hebei Province, China were used as the prototype. Alfalfa and ryegrass were selected as the test plants. Pot experiments were carried out at different heavy metal concentrations (Cu:14/64/100 mg/kg, Pb:15/38/170 mg/kg, Cd:1/4/8 mg/kg) levels to study and reveal the effects of single and compound soil heavy metal pollution on seed germination and seedling growth characteristics of alfalfa and ryegrass. The results showed that: (1) Under the condition of single Cd pollution, the germination index of alfalfa seeds and the germination potential of ryegrass seeds show a trend of “low concentration promotion and high concentration inhibition”. Under the condition of single Pb and Cu pollution in soil, the germination indices show obvious inhibition and damage effect; that is, with an increase in concentration, the germination rate, germination potential, germination potential, and vigor index show a decreasing trend. When Pb is 170 mg/kg or Cu is 100 mg/kg or Cd is 8 mg/kg, the inhibitory effect on seed germination and seedling growth of the two plants is the most harmful. (2) Due to the different concentrations of heavy metal combined pollution, there are synergistic or antagonistic effects between Cu, Pb and Cd in soil on alfalfa and ryegrass. That is to say, under low concentrations of heavy metal pollution, the inhibitory effect of combined stress is greater than that of single stress, and under high concentration of heavy metal pollution, the inhibitory effect of combined stress is less than that of single stress. (3) Whether in the single pollution or combined pollution of soil, ryegrass is always more tolerant than alfalfa, indicating that ryegrass has more potential for remediation.

Study on the Distribution and Source of Heavy Metal Pollution in Surface Sediments of Huanghua Habor

In order to study the pollution characteristics of heavy metals in surface sediments of Huanghua Sea area, the concentrations of organic carbon, sulfide, petroleum, Hg, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd and As in surface sediments of 15 stations in Huanghua Sea area were analyzed, and their sources and ecological risks were evaluated. The results show that all the elements in the sediments can meet the quality standard of a class of Marine sediments. The coefficient of variation of heavy metals ranged from 18.71% to 37.69%, indicating that the distribution of heavy metals among all stations was relatively uniform and the dispersion was small. The correlation of Pb, Cr and As in heavy metals is good, which indicates that these elements have homology. The results of ground accumulation index Igeo calculated by the average value of sediments in shallow sea of China show that Hg and Cd of surface sediments in Huanghua Sea are pollution-free to light-moderate pollution, and the pollution of Cd and Hg is more serious. The evaluation of potential ecological risk coefficient shows that the potential risk index RI of Huanghua Port area ranges from 112.78 to 449.89, all of which are greater than 110, belonging to moderate to strong ecological risk, in which the contribution values of Cd and Hg are greater than 90%, which also indicates that Cd and Hg are the main ecological risk factors in Huanghua Sea area.

Characteristics of Heavy Metal Pollution in Farmland Soil of the Yangtze River Economic Belt Based on Bibliometric Analysis

The Yangtze River Economic Belt is one of the major strategic development regions in China. It is of great significance to clarify the characteristics and sources of heavy metal pollution in farmland soil of the Yangtze River Economic Belt for the prevention and control of heavy metal pollution and to ensure safe agricultural production. After collecting extensive literature data, we analyzed the pollution characteristics, environmental risk, and potential sources of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Hg, As, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni) in farmland soil of the Yangtze River Economic Belt through the integrated use of spatial and geo-accumulation index analyses. The results showed that:① the proportion of soil samples exceeding the risk screening values for soil contamination of agricultural land of Cd, Cu, Pb, Hg, Zn, and As were 39.8%, 18.5%, 8.3%, 6.9%, 6.9%, and 6.4%, respectively. Compared with the risk standard, soil Cd had the highest rate of exceeding the standard. ② The contents of Cr, Cu, Zn, and Ni in the upper reaches were higher than those in the middle and lower reaches, and the contents of Cd, As, and Pb in the middle reaches were higher than those in the upper and lower reaches. ③ The results of the geo-accumulation index analysis showed that the contamination degree of the eight heavy metals decreased in the order of Cd(0.42)>Hg(-0.28)>Pb(-0.32)>Zn(-0.39)>Cu(-0.42)>Cr(-0.7)>As(-0.81)>Ni(-0.73), where the accumulation risk of soil Cd and Hg was relatively higher. ④ Higher environmental background and mining activities were the main factors affecting the accumulation of heavy metals in soils in the upper and middle reaches. By contrast, rapid urbanization, industrial production, and intensive agricultural activities were the main factors affecting the heavy metal accumulation in soils in the middle and lower reaches. In view of the current status and control needs of heavy metal pollution in the Yangtze River Economic Belt, it is recommended to strengthen source prevention and control and to also carry out hierarchical control and regional classification management of heavy metal pollution in farmland soils according to the degree of heavy metal pollution, geological background, and quality of agricultural products. The ultimate objective of this research was to archive the farmland soil environmental quality safety and agricultural green sustainable production in the Yangtze River Economic Belt.

Source identification and spatial distribution of heavy metals in soil of central urban area of Chongqing, China

ABSTRACT To understand the characteristics of heavy metal pollution in soil and identify the source of heavy metals, 342 surface soil samples were collected in Chongqing, China. The contents of 11 heavy metals (i.e., arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), mercury (Hg), antimony (Sb), manganese (Mn), and molybdenum (Mo)) were determined. The Principal Component analysis/absolute Principal component fraction (PCA/APCS) receptor model, the classified regression (CATREG) model, and the hot spot model were employed to analyze the data. The contents of As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni, Hg, Sb, Mn, and Mo in soil were 5.80, 0.13, 76.56, 25.55, 23.99, 75.58, 30.50, 0.05, 0.64, 573.32, and 0.56 mg·kg−1, respectively. The results of principal component analysis showed that the main heavy metal elements under the first principal component load were Cu, Ni, Zn, Mn, Cr, Pb, and Cd. The second principal component is mainly loaded with Mo, As, Hg, and Sb. The results of classified regression analysis showed that population density mainly affected Cu (0.54), soil mainly affected Ni (0.41), Sb (0.49), Zn (0.47), and Mn (0.21), and water quality mainly affected As (0.45) and Mo (0.37). Air quality mainly affected Cd (0.33) and Cr (0.37), traffic activity mainly affected Hg (0.31), and slope mainly affected Pb (0.31). The research results can be used to trace the environmental sources of soil heavy metals, fundamentally prevent and repair soil heavy metal pollution, and protect urban soil environmental quality.

Heavy Metal Emissions from Coal-fired Power Plants and Heavy Metal Pollution Characteristics and Health Risks in Surrounding Soils

The aim of this study was to reveal the influence of heavy metal emissions from the flue gas of coal-fired power plants on the surrounding soil environment. Seven heavy metals, including As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, and Ni, were detected in the flue gas of six coal-fired power plants in Shijiazhuang, and the heavy metals in the soil surrounding the power plants were analyzed. The source analysis and health risk assessment of the heavy metals were carried out. The results showed that after a series of flue gas pollutant control measures, the emission concentrations of different heavy metals in the flue gas of the coal-fired power plants ranged from 0.11 to 6.32 mg·(MW·h)-1, and Cu, Cr, and Ni were the main pollutants. The total amount of the seven heavy metal elements discharged into the atmosphere by each power plant was 33.56-275.71 kg·a-1. The average contents of Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, and Ni in the surface soil surrounding the coal-fired power plant were higher than the background values of Hebei soil, and the contents were 1.16-2.32 times higher than the background values. The heavy metal content in the soil around the power plants was proportional to the heavy metal emissions in the flue gas. The heavy metal content in the soil under different wind directions first increased and then decreased gradually with the increase in distance from the power plants. Source analysis showed that coal combustion emissions contributed the most to heavy metals in soil around the power plants (41.4%), followed by industrial emissions (23.6%) and transportation emissions (19.6%). Altogether, human activities played a leading role in soil heavy metal enrichment, accounting for 84.6%. The health risk assessment showed that the overall health risk of metal elements in the soil surrounding the power plant was within acceptable limits.

Heavy metal contamination in beach sediments as a result of sewage outlet and waste residue dumping in Qingdao, China.

Heavy metal pollution on beaches due to enhanced human activities has received attention. This study takes four beaches in China as examples to study the characteristics of heavy metal pollution. The results show that most beach sediments have a certain degree of heavy metal accumulation as a result of human activities, except for the sediments of No. 1 beach. The beaches in order of the degree of pollution were No. 3 beach > Shilaoren beach > No. 2 beach > No. 1 beach. Three of the four studied beaches show contamination with As, Cr, Fe, Ni, Pb and Zn. Sewage outlets are the main sources of these pollutants, but the high levels of Zn and Fe are caused by coal cinder dumping at one beach, and the high levels of Ni are due to the coating of fishing boats at another beach. Heavy metal pollution occurs in areas near pollutant sources or at the high or low tide lines due to waves and tides. Heavy metals also diffuse vertically, resulting in contamination at certain depths. The distribution of heavy metals over ten years showed that most of the pollutants on cape-bay beaches are difficult to diffuse outward, which indicates that a special pollutant management plan needs to be developed for such beaches.

Collaborative evaluation of heavy metal pollution of soil-crop system in the southeast of Yangtze River Delta, China

Scientific evaluation of heavy metal pollution is required to understand the status better and formulate policies. However, previous studies primarily focused on a single evaluation of soil pollution or crop pollution, ignoring the collaborative evaluation of soil-crop system pollution from a holistic perspective. In this study, we collected 1815 samples in an industrial city to explore the differences between heavy metal pollution in soil and crops as well as collaborative characteristics of heavy metal pollution in soil-crop system. Our results showed that for the soil where grains and vegetables were grown, approximately half of the study region was comprehensively polluted, concentrated in the downtown. However, grains in most areas were comprehensively polluted, particularly the severe pollution around the downtown (i.e., County C), while the overall crop pollution of vegetables and fruits was much less serious than that of grains. For single soil pollution, the grain was the most polluted crop type in Pb, Hg, Cu, and Zn pollution. In contrast, for single crop pollution, the grain was the most polluted crop type in nearly all heavy metals, especially in Cr, As, and Ni pollution. Therefore, pollution characteristics of the same heavy metal were inconsistent in soil and crops, indicating the demand of an integrated evaluation method for soil-crop system pollution. Our collaborative evaluation results showed that 52.56% of sample points were contaminated and mainly distributed in the middle part. The collaborative pollution grade presented an increasing trend from the periphery to the center, and the west part was more contaminated than the east part. Our study further implies that the grain had the strongest abilities of absorbing and accumulating heavy metals. Cd was the most easily absorbed heavy metal by crops, while Pb was the least easily accumulated heavy metal in soil-crop system.

Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Shallow Groundwater of Coal-Poultry Farming Districts.

This study aimed to assess the heavy metal (Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Sr, Cd, Pb, and Cr) pollution characteristics, sources, and human health risks in shallow groundwater in the impact zones of urban and rural semi-intensive poultry farms in Suzhou City. Ordinary kriging interpolation showed that poultry farming contributed substantially to the pollution of shallow groundwater by Mn, Zn, and Cu. Positive matrix factorization was applied to identify the sources of heavy metals, and the health risks were assessed based on the hazard index and carcinogenic risks of the various sources. Heavy metal enrichment was closely related to anthropogenic activities. In addition, four sources were identified: poultry manure (29.33%), natural source (27.94%), industrial activities (22.29%), and poultry wastewater (20.48%). The main exposure route of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to adults and children was oral ingestion. The non-carcinogenic risk of oral ingestion in children was higher than that in adults; the carcinogenic risk was higher in adults than in children. Poultry manure (42.0%) was considered the largest contributor to non-carcinogenic risk, followed by poultry wastewater (21%), industrial activities (20%), and natural sources (17%). Industrial activity (44%) was the primary contributor to carcinogenic risk, followed by poultry wastewater (25%), poultry manure (19%), and natural sources (12%).

Pollution characteristics of soil heavy metals around two typical copper mining and beneficiation enterprises in Northwest China.

In order to investigate the situation of heavy metal pollution in the heavy metal industry in Gansu Province, a large copper mining province, two large and typical copper mining and beneficiation enterprises with differences in topographic features, climatic conditions, and soil types were selected as the target of this study based on similar ore types and beneficiation processes. Around these two enterprises, geochemical baselines of the six heavy metals were established, while the degree of local soil heavy metal pollution and potential hazards to humans were assessed based on statistical analysis, single-factor and multi-factor index analysis, and health risk evaluation models. In addition, Spearman's correlation analysis and hierarchical cluster analysis were used to explore the intrinsic association between each heavy metal in the two mining industries to reveal the pattern of soil heavy metal pollution in the copper mining and beneficiation industry and to propose targeted measures to improve and prevent soil heavy metal pollution. The results showed that the heavy metal pollution in the soil around Shengxi Mining Co., Ltd. of Subei County (SX enterprise) was higher than that around Yangba Copper Co., Ltd. of Gansu Province (YB enterprise), but the two enterprises had similar patterns of pollution, with an overall medium level of pollution. The carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for children and adults were within acceptable limits for both enterprises. Besides, the correlation between the different heavy metals to similarity in their sources of contamination and the different degrees of association between the soil heavy metals of the two enterprises due to their environmental characteristics.

Heavy Metal Pollution Characteristics and Source Analysis in the Dust Fall on Buildings of Different Heights.

High-rise buildings block airflow, and dust accumulates on their upper surfaces. In this study, dust fall on the rooftops of low-, medium-, and high-rise buildings was sampled and analyzed to assess the degree of atmospheric heavy metal pollution. The Cr, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb mass fractions in dust samples were analyzed by microwave digestion/inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The average Cr, Ni, Cu, As, Cd, and Pb concentrations were highest on the rooftops of low-rise buildings, whereas those of Mn and Zn were highest on high-rise buildings. The cumulative indices for the eight heavy metals revealed a moderate pollution level for Zn on the rooftops of low- and high-rise buildings. Only the potential ecological risk index for Cd was very high, with a particularly high heavy metal-related ecological risk for low-rise buildings. The enrichment factor analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) demonstrated that Zn and Cd were strongly influenced by human activity. Zn, Cu, Cd, and Pb originated from traffic sources, Cr and Ni were derived from natural sources, and As was of industrial origin. The source analyses of rare earth elements were consistent with the heavy metal PCA results. In conclusion, our results provide a reference for hazard and source analysis of heavy metals in atmospheric dust fall on buildings of different heights.

Evaluation of Heavy Metal Content, Sources, and Potential Ecological Risks in Soils of Southern Hilly Areas

In order to explore the characteristics of soil heavy metal pollution and ecological risk status in southern hilly areas, a hilly area of a southern province was selected as the research area, using soil samples collected at 60 points in 2017. The single factor pollution index (Pi), Nemero comprehensive pollution index, and potential ecological risk index (RI) were used to evaluate the content characteristics and potential ecological risks of eight heavy metal elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn), and positive definite matrix factor analysis models (PMF) were used to analyze their sources of pollution. The results were as follows:① the content of eight heavy metal elements in the study area exceeded the standard, and the Nemeiro comprehensive pollution index showed that the proportions of light, moderate, and heavy pollution in the study area were 63%, 8%, and 2%, respectively. Unpolluted and lightly polluted samples accounted for 27% and were thus basically lightly polluted. ②The comprehensive potential ecological risk index showed that the RI of soil heavy metals was 39.58-224.15, the proportions of samples with low and medium ecological risks were 73.33% and 25%, respectively, and the proportion of sites with severe ecological risks was 1.67%. Although this site had the highest ecological risk, the content of heavy metals was lower than the background value of soil elements in the province. ③Six pollution sources were obtained through the PMF model:natural sources, agricultural activity sources, mixed sources composed of copper mining and transportation, industrial activity sources, transportation sources, and domestic waste emission sources. The contribution rates of each source were 24.8%, 17.7%, 17.7%, 17.6%, 12.0%, and 10.2%, respectively.

Heavy metal pollution characteristics and potential ecological risk assessment of soils around three typical antimony mining areas and watersheds in China

China is the largest antimony resource globally. The mining and smelting of antimony will inevitably have a significant impact on the surrounding and downstream farmlands of the mining area, Therefore, it is necessary to understand the pollution characteristics of antimony and evaluate its potential environmental risks. In this paper, three typical antimony mining areas were used as research districts to analyze the contents of heavy metals in soils of the mining areas and watersheds. The single-factor pollution index method, Nemerow comprehensive pollution index method, geo-accumulation index method, and potential ecological risk index method were used to comprehensively evaluate the pollution status and ecological risk of heavy metals in soils around the mining areas. The soil around the Lengshuijiang tin mine was polluted by As, Cd, Zn, and Sb, it was a heavily polluted soil and at a high ecological risk level. The arable soil around the Nandan tea mountain antimony mine was polluted by As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Sb, and Zn, and it was a heavily polluted soil with very high ecological risk level. The soil around the Xunyang antimony mine was mainly polluted by Sb and it was a moderately polluted soil with moderate ecological risk level. The results revealed that the overall soil heavy metal levels in the Lengshuijiang mining area and the Nandan mining area were in a high-risk state, most likely due to the mining and smelting of metal ores and the weathering of mineralised rocks. showing a high-potential ecological risk in these mining areas. We expect to provide a scientific basis for the safe utilization of farmland and pollution control around the antimony mining areas and watersheds in China.

Ecological and human health risk assessment of heavy metals based on their source apportionment in cropland soils around an e-waste dismantling site, Southeast China

An accurate understanding of soil heavy metal (HM) pollution characteristics and source apportionment, and a recognition of the major factors influencing ecological and human health risks (HHRs) are essential for soil HM pollution control and remediation. In this study, 212 surface soils (0–20 cm) and 15 profile soils (0–100 cm) were collected from cropland soils around an e-waste dismantling site in Taizhou city, Zhejiang Province, China. Spatial analysis was used to evaluate the pollution characteristics of HMs (Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr and Ni). Principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) were also conducted to quantify their source contributions. A modified source-oriented HHR assessment integrated source-oriented ecological risk and source-oriented HHR assessment was developed to describe the major factors that influenced HHR. Results showed that 94.81 %, 88.21 %, 36.79 % and 47.17 % of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn, respectively, in surface soils exceeded their screening values in the soil environmental quality standard for agricultural soils (GB 15618–2018). Spatial analysis indicated that high values of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were distributed near the e-waste dismantling site. The results of PCA and PMF showed that the primary sources of HMs in the study area are e-waste dismantling activities, natural sources and atmospheric deposition, which contribute 27 %, 46 % and 27 % of HM pollutants, respectively. The results of source-oriented ecological risk and HHR assessment indicated that e-waste dismantling activities and natural sources were primary sources for ecological risk and HHR. However, source-oriented HHR assessment may underestimate the contribution of e-waste dismantling activities by ignoring HM pollution levels. The modified source-oriented HHR assessment highlights that e-waste dismantling activities were major factor that affect noncarcinogenic risk. This study could provide important data support for subsequent environmental remediation of soil HM pollution in cropland soils around e-waste dismantling sites.

Analysis of Heavy Metal Pollution Characteristics and Potential Ecological Risks of Surface Sediments in Dongjiang Lake

To understand the pollution characteristics, spatial distribution characteristics, potential ecological risks, and sources of heavy metals in surface sediments of Dongjiang Lake, 12 surface sediment samples were collected from Dongjiang Lake. The contents of 20 heavy metals including Li, Be, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Ag, Cd, Cs, Ba, Pb, and U were analyzed in this study. The geo-accumulation index method and potential risk index method were used to evaluate the pollution degree and potential risks of heavy metals in sediments, and the correlation analysis and principal component analysis were used to trace the source of the primary heavy metals. The results showed that the average contents of ω(Cd)(2.25 mg·kg-1) and ω(As)(80.80 mg·kg-1) in heavy metals of Dongjiang Lake sediments were 21.2 times and 5.5 times the background value (0.11 mg·kg-1 and 14.7 mg·kg-1) of Hunan province. The overall spatial distribution of heavy metals was in the order of South>North>Central. The evaluation by the geo-accumulation index method showed that Cd was at the heavy pollution level, As and Se were at the moderate pollution level, Ag and Ga were at the light pollution level, and the other heavy metals were below the pollution standard. The evaluation by the potential risk index showed that all the surface sediments of Dongjiang Lake were at the high-risk level. The main environmental risk factor was Cd, which had an extremely high risk; the second was As, which had a medium risk; and the remaining heavy metals had no ecological risk.

Characteristics and Risk of Forest Soil Heavy Metal Pollution in Western Guangdong Province, China

West Guangdong is an important ecological barrier in Guangdong province, so understanding the spatial patterns and sources of heavy metal pollution of forest soil in this region is of great significance for ecological protection. In this study, the concentrations of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Ni) in forest soil were determined. Geostatistics, single-factor pollution index (PI), potential ecological risk index (RI), principal component analysis (PCA), and Pearson’s correlation analysis were used to evaluate and analyze the characteristics of heavy metal pollution of forest soil. The results showed that the average concentration did not exceed the critical value. Cd, Pb, and Cu were enriched in southwest Xinxing County, while Zn and Ni were enriched in most areas of the Yunan and Yuncheng districts. Two groups of heavy metals from different sources were identified by PCA and a correlation analysis. Cd, Pb, and Cu in their respective enrichment areas were mainly from marble and cement production, whereas Zn and Ni were primarily from transportation and chemical fertilizer. Most of the study area was safe or slightly polluted while the heavy metal-enriched areas were moderately to severely polluted. The potential ecological risk was at a lower level in the study area but moderate in southwest Xinxing County. In summary, human factors impact the spatial patterns and ecological risks of heavy metals in forest soil. This study provides a scientific basis for forest soil pollution control and ecological protection.

Assessment of Heavy Metal Pollution Characteristics andEcological Risk in Soils around a Rare Earth Mine in Gannan

In order to explore the pollution of heavy metals in the soils around the mined rare-earth mines, this paper used the geoaccumulation index method, the Nemerow pollution index method, and the potential ecological risk index method during the high water period and the withered water period, respectively, to analyze and assess the pollution characteristics and ecological risks of Mn, Cu, Cr, As, Cd, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the soils of the study area. The results showed that all the eight heavy metals in thesoil of the study area have accumulated to varying degrees, and the accumulation indices were Pb > Mn > Zn > Cd > Cu > Ni > Cr > As in descending order, with Pb and Mn accumulating most seriously. According to the results of the Nemerow pollution index, more than 25% of the sampling points in the soil were lightly contaminated, the Nemerow index of heavy metal Pb was greater than 2, which was moderately contaminated, and Cd was lightly contaminated in the withered water period. The potential ecological risk index showed that the heavy metal Cd was moderately ecologically hazardous, while the other seven heavy metals were all mildly ecologically hazardous. The heavy metals Pb and Mn in the soils of the study area were more seriously polluted, and there was also a certain degree of heavy metal Cd pollution during the withered water period, and the more seriously polluted areas were mainly located around the open pit of the rare-earth mines. Based on Java, the software platform of soil heavy metal pollution characteristics and ecological risk assessment around rare-earth mines is realized. The overall structure of the platform is designed, the background development framework is planned based on SSM, and the database is designed with SQL Server.
