The Importance of Collaboration Between Schools And Parents in Improving Student Achievement

This research aims to examine the application of understanding student characteristics to mitigate unwanted behaviour at Al Yusra Abadi Tahfiz School. The employed research method is qualitative, utilising data collection approaches such as literature review, observation, and interviews. The research findings indicate that the implementation of educational techniques derived from the Quran and Hadith, including memorisation, talaqqi, and discourse, positively influences the character development of students. Furthermore, the pesantren setting and the profound interaction between students and teachers significantly contribute to the development of discipline, responsibility, and virtuous character. Factors facilitating research implementation encompass the provision of ample learning opportunities and the endorsement of proficient educators. Simultaneously, there are other constraining factors, including insufficient student motivation and difficulties in regularly applying pedagogical methods. The effective execution of the Al Yusra Abadi Tahfiz program can mitigate negative behaviour and elevate the moral standards of students, rendering them virtuous and advantageous to society.

How creative and curious are CLIL teachers? Investigating the effect of CLIL teaching experience and the level of education

The aim of the article is to present the research results on two important character virtues, namely creativity and curiosity. Creativity is very significant in the teaching profession, as it involves researching, looking for solutions, and making choices. Curiosity involves “the active recognition, pursuit, and regulation of one’s experience in response to challenging opportunities” (Peterson & Seligman, 2004: 125). The research was conducted in Poland among 149 Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) teachers for whom these features are indispensable, bearing in mind various obstacles they have to face, e.g., lack of proper teaching materials. In order to collect the data, the VIA Inventory of Strengths (VIA-IS) was disseminated among Primary, Junior High School and Secondary School teachers. In the following article, only the data concerning creativity and curiosity is discussed. The findings indicate that self-reported scores for the statements connected with CLIL teachers’ creativity and curiosity did not correlate significantly with the teachers’ experience in CLIL and none of the tested aspects significantly depended on the educational level of the teachers’ employing institutions.

Prilog proučavanju znanstvene i društvene aktivnosti Ferde Šišića na temelju korespondencije iz Arhiva HAZU-a u Zagrebu

On the basis of extensive archival materials related to the life, scientific and political activities of one of the most respected Croatian historians, Ferdo Šišić (1869–1940), which have been archived and kept in the Archives of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts (HAZU) in Zagreb, the authors analyze his relations with his contemporaries. In this work, by processing material from Series A - Letters of various correspondents to Šišić, by analyzing the content of the letters, one can identify the circle of persons who addressed their letters to Šišić and especially the reasons for writing to him, one of the most respected members of the Croatian intellectual milieu at the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. The mentioned archival fund contains letters from the period 1895 to 1940, and reveals that Šišić maintained lively scientific and everyday connections with persons from different social strata and different professions. However, by far the highest number of letters is devoted to historiography and related sciences (auxiliary historical sciences, philology, egdotics), which he discussed with distinguished scientists from Croatia, Central Europe, Russia, and Western Europe, as well. In addition to his scientific reputation, which his contemporaries emphasize in their letters in the Croatian, Slovenian, Serbian, Hungarian, German, French, English and Russian languages, many of them, especially the correspondents from Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, reveal his character virtues, specifically that he was respected as a scientific authority, as well as a moral and empathic individual, who was always willing to help younger scientists, friends, and acquaintances.

Identity‐Based Motivation and the Motivational Consequences of Difficulty

ABSTRACTDifficulty is an under‐appreciated but powerful motivational force. As outlined by identity‐based motivation (IBM) theory, a social cognition theory of self, self‐regulation, and goal pursuit, people prefer to act (action‐readiness) and understand their experiences (procedural‐readiness) in ways that fit who they are (identity‐congruence). IBM also predicts that experienced identity congruence is context‐sensitive—though experienced as stable anchors, people's identities are dynamically constructed in context. Contexts shape which identities come to mind, what these on‐the‐mind identities imply for action, and what people infer when thinking about a task, goal, or life feels hard. People can draw two inferences (termed difficulty‐as‐importance and difficulty‐as‐impossibility) when a task or goal feels hard to think about and a third (termed difficulty‐as‐improvement) when their life feels hard to think about. IBM predicts, and studies support, a bidirectional relationship among these three components (action‐readiness, procedural‐readiness, and dynamic construction). Situations shape the identities that are on the mind and feel relevant (dynamic construction) and the inferences people draw from difficulty (procedural readiness). On‐the‐mind and context‐relevant identities shape inferences from difficulty. Inferences from difficulty affect identity and action—when applying a difficulty‐as‐importance lens, people feel more certain of attaining their self‐relevant goals. They perform better and find engaging a “me” thing to do—“no pain, no gain”. When applying a difficulty‐as‐impossibility lens, people find engaging a waste of their time and unlikely to yield self‐benefits unless an easy means to goal attainment exists—“cut your losses”. They focus on their virtuous character traits and prefer effortful means to attain self‐relevant goals when applying a difficulty‐as‐improvement lens—“the high road”. Difficulty can be a green light of importance signaling you to get going, a detour sign of impossibility signaling you to shift to something else, or angel wings pointing you to the effortful route.

Temple Diplomacy, Sacred Rites, and Overseas Chinese During the Reign of Song Emperor Zhenzong (997–1022)

Throughout most of Chinese history, leaders viewed the migration and movement of their subjects beyond state borders as a symptom of poor governance. As a result, record keepers generally avoided addressing the topic of Chinese people traveling or residing overseas. There is, however, an exceptional moment in Chinese history that provides valuable insight into the early establishment of Chinese communities abroad. Facing political pressure after signing a humiliating peace treaty with foreign adversaries in 1005, the Song dynasty emperor Zhenzong (968–1022, r. 997–1022) utilized unconventional forms of religious diplomacy and revived ancient rites to shore up support for his rule. The Feng and Shan rites were the highest level of sacrifice that an emperor could undertake, and they were only carried out by several emperors prior to Zhenzong’s reign. One of the requirements of this complex ritual was for the sovereign to attract foreign peoples from afar by his virtuous character, and so Zhenzong’s reign witnessed major initiatives to attract foreign envoys from states such as Srivijaya (Sumatra), Dai Viet (northern Vietnam), Japan, and India. Zhenzong’s reign also incorporated forms of diplomacy that originated in South and Southeast Asia, namely, the construction of temples in foreign states to enhance his spiritual authority. This essay will demonstrate that Emperor Zhenzong relied on Chinese merchants residing overseas to work with foreign leaders to coordinate the participation of foreign emissaries in such forms of temple diplomacy and in the Feng and Shan sacrifices. The significance of these events brought the activities of Chinese people trading and residing overseas to the attention of the Song court and its chroniclers, and as a result, we are left with the earliest indications of Chinese communities abroad in official Chinese histories.

Character education in universities

Is character education a legitimate goal of higher education? Character education should aim to form people so they can live well in a world worth living in. All universities, whether faith-inspired or not, have an obligation to prepare students for life—a life worth living, a life with purpose. The Christian faith conviction that we as humans have a common telos, that there is an ultimate common good, or highest good, that is God, is central to any Catholic concept of character and flourishing in the university. The practice of the virtues, through good character, is the road to this spiritual end. Catholic Universities traditionally have many features that make them well-placed to cultivate the virtues of character in their students, particularly through the lens of a Christian anthropology. The work of the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues on universities is highlighted together with recent scholarly discussion of the place of character virtues in secular and Christian universities.

IMPLEMENTATION OF CLASSICAL CONDITIONING METHODS ON THE ABILITY TO USE THREE MAGIC WORDS IN EARLY AGE CHILDREN IN GROUP B2 PARENTAS KAHARAP PALANGKA RAYA ACADEMIC YEAR 2023/2024

Character education acts as a pillar and strength of a nation in its virtuous character. One way to build character in early childhood is to get children used to saying simple words such as sorry, please and thank you. Three Magic Word is a combination of three simple words but has very important meaning for children. Early childhood is very important to teach. Teaching the Three Magic Words (Sorry, Please and Thank You) can educate children to be better able to know themselves by realizing that every living creature has limitations in its abilities and therefore requires help from other people (the meaning of the words sorry and please). The emergence of awareness in appreciating and respecting other people, and being able to accept the good and bad things in life with grace and being able to understand that everything has great meaning and needs to be grateful for (the meaning of the word thank you). The classical conditioning method was developed by Ivan Pavlov. Classical conditioning refers to a number of training procedures in which one stimulus or stimuli appears to replace another stimulus in developing a response, that these procedures are called classical because of their historical priority. Pavlov stated that the stimulus needs to be repeated repeatedly so that it can be called habituation. This research is quantitative research using experimental methods. The data analysis technique in this research uses a difference test (t-test). The results of this research show that the implementation of the Classical Conditioning habituation method can develop the ability to use the Three Magic Words in early childhood in the B2 group of Kindergarten Parentas Kaharap Palangka Raya.

The Virtuous Character In The Novel "Al-Ruz" By Hossam Khawam Al Yahya

This study seeks to shed light on the concept of the virtuous character in the novel (Al-Ruz) at two levels: the mono-typical, and the complex, transformative, by presenting the course of events specific to the character, of which the character is the primary focus in moving it, which requires examining the path of this character’s transformations or fluctuations between goodness and goodness. And evil or virtue and vice. As well as revealing its patterns and levels of presence in terms of simplicity or typicality, complexity or composition, in a way that reveals its references and social, humanitarian and moral backgrounds, in a poor, backward society - as depicted in the novel - which is the village of (Imam Askar) located on the western bank of the Rose River.The novel follows the approach of modern novels in its adoption of multiple voices, or collective heroism, in terms of depicting the social agency influencing the course of events, away from the stereotypical image of depicting the single heroic character, which placed all the work’s characters on the same level in terms of influence and effectiveness.

Educating future leaders to engage the challenges of a changing world: A blended-learning approach to character and leadership education at the University of Hong Kong.

How can a new generation of students be equipped to take up positions of responsibility in a dynamic global environment, serving as leaders and citizens who will further the good of societies around the world? As the institutions responsible for educating the next generation of citizens and leaders at a formative time in their intellectual and personal development, universities have an important role to play in shaping those who will shape society. While many universities emphasize their desire to raise up future leaders for our challenging times, programmes that actively seek to help students develop qualities of character required for responsible leadership are rare. This article discusses the importance of character in leadership education and draws on a case study programme at the University of Hong Kong, which made use of a creative combination of in-person and online learning to help students grow in their intellectual understanding of leadership as well as in the self-knowledge and virtues of character required to enact responsible leadership in their own lives. The article describes the pedagogical methodology that was employed and presents the results of an exploratory, quasi-experimental longitudinal study of the programme's impact, which was designed to establish proof of concept. The analysis of qualitative data supports the potential of such programmes to make a positive contribution to students' intellectual understanding of leadership as well as their leadership identity and ethical formation1.

Development of the Psychotherapist Character Virtues (PCV) Interview.

To develop an interview-based rating method for assessing therapists' beneficial character traits and evaluate its reliability and validity. The semi-structured Psychotherapist Character Virtues (PCV) interview and evaluation method, based on Erik Erikson's and Heinz Kohut's writings on 16 virtues or abilities and achievements of an adult self, was administered to 68 psychodynamic and solution-focused therapists. Inter-rater reliability was assessed based on 20 videorecorded interviews, rated by two evaluators. In a mixed-methods design, validity was investigated against (i) therapist's questionnaire-based self-reported professional and personal background characteristics and (ii) a qualitative content analysis of emotional atmosphere in the interview. Interrater reliability for individual 16 virtues was acceptable (median correlation .72). From individual virtues, three principal components (Creative Will, Empathy, and Love/Care) emerged with good/excellent internal consistency (component determinacies .95, .85, and .90, respectively) and criterion validity with self-reported professional and personal characteristics. Cluster analysis of therapists' component scores yielded six different therapist character profiles. In qualitative analysis, character profiles meaningfully differed in their impact on the interview's emotional atmosphere. PCV appears promising for evaluating therapists' character virtues, posited to undergird therapists' sensitive attunement and responsiveness. Further research is needed on PCV's predictive validity for therapeutic relationships and outcomes.

This abstract provides a brief comparative analysis of the two perspectives, showcasing their shared commitment to nurturing individuals with a comprehensive skill set and a foundation of moral values for meaningful contributions to society.

Moral Education from Imam Nawawi's Perspective: An Analytical Study of the Kitab Nashaih Al-'Ibad

Moral education is a fundamental aspect of Islamic education, aimed at developing individuals with virtuous character and integrity. Imam Nawawi's Kitab Nashaih Al-'Ibad is a classical Islamic text that provides profound insights into moral education. Understanding these insights is crucial for enhancing contemporary Islamic education. This study aims to explore and analyze the concept of moral education from Imam Nawawi's perspective as presented in Kitab Nashaih Al-'Ibad. The research employs a library research methodology, with Kitab Nashaih Al-'Ibad as the primary reference and various other books and studies on Imam Nawawi's educational perspectives as secondary references. Data was collected through thematic analysis of the primary text and comparative analysis with existing literature on Islamic and moral education. Findings, The study identifies five key principles of moral education according to Imam Nawawi: sincerity (ikhlas), humility (tawadu), patience (sabar), gratitude (syukur), and self-accountability (muhasabah). These principles are highly relevant to contemporary Islamic education, offering a holistic approach that integrates moral and academic development. Comparisons with previous studies and theories highlight the universal relevance and applicability of these principles. Conclusion, Imam Nawawi's principles provide a robust framework for moral education that can significantly contribute to the development of virtuous individuals in the modern educational context. Effective implementation requires collaborative efforts among educators, communities, and stakeholders. Recommendations: It is recommended that these principles be integrated into the curriculum, teacher training programs, and community involvement initiatives. Further research is encouraged to explore practical applications and impacts of these principles in diverse educational settings.

Influence Utilization of Social Media to Creativity Study Inner Students Civics Subjects

The use of social media for student learning creativity in Civics subjects is influenced by developments in the globalized world of education. Teachers must choose the right approach and media in the Civics learning process so that teachers are able to make the learning process smooth and able to make students more creative both at home and at school. The aim of this research is to determine the influence of social use on learning creativity, and also to determine the influence of media use social impact on student creativity. This research method uses a literature study approach sourced from journals, books and other sources that are related to the use of social media on student learning creativity in Civics subjects. The research results show that the development of teachers' teaching creativity is to foster students' interest in learning and teachers are expected to create a teaching strategy that is quite effective and creative, creativity in designing learning implementation plans to plan learning and carry out learning in according to educational objectives. Citizenship education is required to be studied starting from elementary, middle to tertiary levels. This aims to shape the character of the children of the Indonesian nation. The values of Pancasila are formed based on the culture of the Indonesian people, so that the character inherent in every child of the Indonesian nation is a character that is based on the values of Pancasila in their daily lives. That's why Civics is studied and applied to students since elementary school. Through this literature review, it can be concluded that PKN learning is a basic lesson for citizens to have good and virtuous national character. Therefore, education is very important to build creativity and be able to treat social media as learning material and not misuse it.

Beyond Exemplification and Role Modelling for the Education of Moral Character

This paper briefly explores the possible perception of inconsistency or contradiction between the author’s defence in a former 2007 essay of the importance of good or virtuous character and moral role-modelling for the professional practice of teachers and a more recent essay of 2023 which has taken a more cautious view of such exemplification. Basically, while admitting some recent significant change of ethical perspective, it is here argued that these two papers are not fundamentally at odds, and that the problem to which the later essay is addressed follows more from some serious overstatement of the moral educational role of character in more recent virtue ethical and moral educational literature.

Beyond Admiration: Rethinking the Nature of Emulation qua Role Modelling

This paper seeks to disambiguate the nature of emulation – the method of learning from moral role models. Within neo-Aristotelian character education, emulation is considered a primary method of virtuous character development, yet what emulation is and what it involves remains obscure. I argue that this is largely due to a category mistake: the misconceptualisation of emulation as a mere emotion, rather than a moral virtue in its own right. Predominantly composed of virtuous emotion and necessarily entailing virtuous action, I propose a componential account of the virtue of emulation, which I synthesise with Aristotle’s theory of ‘four causes’. I then make visible the importance of phronesis to the emulative process and accordingly introduce a new concept – entangled phronesis – as the psycho-moral mechanism which underpins it. Subsequently, I highlight the developmentally sensitive nature of emulation by dividing it into two main types: pre-phronetic habituated emulation and phronetically-informed complete emulation.

Intellectual humility as a tool to combat false beliefs: An individual-based approach to belief revision.

False beliefs pose significant societal threats, including health risks, political polarization and even violence. In two studies (N = 884) we explored the efficacy of an individual-based approach to correcting false beliefs. We examined whether the character virtue of intellectual humility (IH)-an appreciation of one's intellectual boundaries-encourages revising one's false beliefs in response to counter-information. Our research produced encouraging but also mixed findings. Among participants who held false beliefs about the risks of vaccines (Study 1) and the 2020 US Election being rigged (Study 2), those with higher IH explored more information opposing these false beliefs. This exploration of opposing information, in turn, predicted updating away from these inaccurate health and political beliefs. IH did not directly predict updating away from false beliefs, however, suggesting that this effect-if it exists-may not be particularly powerful. Taken together, these results provide moderate support for IH as a character trait that can foster belief revision but, simultaneously, suggest that alternate pathways to combat false beliefs and misinformation may be preferred.

Exploring Iroquois Culture in Joseph Bruchac’s Peacemaker: A Framework for Ethical Decision-Making Rooted in Core Character Value

In the realm of environmental ethics, culture significantly influences the placement of the non-human world within various spectra, be it at the pinnacle, bottom, or as equals. Trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, and caring, the core character values, are intrinsically linked to where the non-human world stands in this context. Joseph Bruchac, a revered Native American author, revisits the historical genesis of the Iroquois confederacy, shedding light on the intricate relationship between the human and non-human worlds in his novel, Peacemaker. This paper delves into comprehending the Iroquois culture as a foundation for ethical decision-making, with a specific focus on core character values such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, and caring.

Peace and Conflict Resolution in Islam: A Perspective Building

The critics of Islam have hypothesized that several teachings of Islam jeopardize the modern nation-state and its law and order. Islam is perceived as a part of the problem rather than a solution. Islam, however, has a rich inheritance of addressing conflicts in the world. The Islamic texts and Muslim heritage approaches to conflict resolution draw on religious values and present a considerable wealth of responses based on positive solutions to the conflict. The terms/concepts like social justice al-adl to the terms like sulh, translated as settlement and mūslāha translated as reconciliation, wasta (patronage-mediation), tāhkim (arbitration), and importantly salam a peace greeting among Muslims form the conceptual framework of the conflict resolution and peacebuilding in Islam. The specific term for non-violence in the Arabic language is not known, however the alternate vocabulary which stresses non-vehemence and peace is al-unf (no force), sabr (patience), akhlāq (virtuous character), etc. Since the conflict begins within a person, one strives to resolve that conflict through aql (intellect) to fight al-hawa (passions and desire) to overcome jahl (ignorance) with ikhlas (purity) then ihsan (beneficence) or putting the good and beautiful into practice is exercised and above all fighting for social justice jihad. This paper is an effort to build the theoretical aspect of Islam and conflict resolution. A descriptive research design has been employed for the present study. The data was collected through primary and secondary sources of information, and the method of data collection adopted was content analysis.

Perceptions of COVID-19 patients in the use of bioethical principles and the physician-patient relationship: a qualitative approach

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the approach to the health-disease system, raising the question about the principles of bioethics present in physician–patient relations. The principles while widely accepted may not be sufficient for a comprehensive ethical analysis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the perception of these principles and the physician–patient relationship during a hospital stay through a qualitative approach.MethodSixteen semi-structured interviews took place to know the patients’ perception during their 2020 hospitalization for COVID-19. The data was analyzed through the constant comparison method, creating categories and comparing them. In the end, seven categories were established and were grouped in three: bioethical principles (dignity, charity, vulnerability, autonomy), doctor-patient relationship (participant commitment, informed consent, health staff-patient relationship) and the experience of the disease (illness, the role of the family).ResultsThe research found that most patients described a positive experience, with the feeling of having been well cared for with no sense of discrimination or injustice done. The majority also reported that their autonomy was respected in the treatment decisions. The evaluation of these attitudes is an area of opportunity, especially when the patients' vulnerability is at risk.ConclusionsThe ethics of virtue offers a better reflection of how human beings manifest themselves by emphasizing the development of virtuous character and behaviors that allow them to realize their values in life. Virtue, Authenticity and Irony: Themes from Sartre and Williams

In the course of criticizing indirect forms of consequentialism Bernard Williams argued that because virtues of character enter into the very content of the self, they cannot be instrumentalised. They must, instead, be viewed as cognitive responses to intrinsic value. This paper investigates this argument and relates it to similar claims in the work of Sartre. The inalienability of the first personal point of view represents a common theme and informs a further argument that an agent can only think of him or herself as merely one amongst others via a distinctive ethical use of the trope of irony.
