Isotopic and anatomical signals for interpreting fire-related responses in Pinus halepensis

Our study aims to define isotopic and anatomical responses to fires of P. halepensis . Main results: decrease in tree growth and relative conductivity and increase in water use efficiency. We investigated the ecophysiological responses of a Pinus halepensis Mill. stand surviving two wildfires in southern France. Basal area, isotope composition and anatomical traits were analysed before and after fires, using tree rings to assess the ecological responses of trees to heat-related damage. The years were determined based on the presence of fire scars. Stable isotopes (δ13C and δ18O) were measured in tree rings before and after the “fire years”. Anatomical observations allowed qualitative analysis of the scar region and quantification of tracheid size in tree rings before and after the fire years. Relative and percentage conductivity of earlywood and latewood far from the woundwood were estimated. Results showed a decrease in tree growth after the fire events accompanied by an increase in 13C-derived water use efficiency (WUEi) and a decrease in relative conductivity. The positive relationship between δ13C and δ18O suggested that both isotopic variations are mostly driven by changes in stomatal conductance following fire events. P. halepensis proved to be a strong isohydric species, able to survive frequent fires with temporary ecophysiological modifications and anatomical adaptations. Our findings afford new insights into post-fire survival strategies of this species in an environment where fires are predicted to increase in frequency during the twenty-first century.

Effects of high temperature on photosynthesis and related gene expression in poplar.

BackgroundHigh temperature, whether transitory or constant, causes physiological, biochemical and molecular changes that adversely affect tree growth and productivity by reducing photosynthesis. To elucidate the photosynthetic adaption response and examine the recovery capacity of trees under heat stress, we measured gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, electron transport, water use efficiency, and reactive oxygen-producing enzyme activities in heat-stressed plants.ResultsWe found that photosynthesis could completely recover after less than six hours of high temperature treatment, which might be a turning point in the photosynthetic response to heat stress. Genome-wide gene expression analysis at six hours of heat stress identified 29,896 differentially expressed genes (15,670 up-regulated and 14,226 down-regulated), including multiple classes of transcription factors. These interact with each other and regulate the expression of photosynthesis-related genes in response to heat stress, controlling carbon fixation and changes in stomatal conductance. Heat stress of more than twelve hours caused reduced electron transport, damaged photosystems, activated the glycolate pathway and caused H2O2 production; as a result, photosynthetic capacity did not recover completely.ConclusionsThis study provides a systematic physiological and global gene expression profile of the poplar photosynthetic response to heat stress and identifies the main limitations and threshold of photosynthesis under heat stress. It will expand our understanding of plant thermostability and provides a robust dataset for future studies.

Stomatal Size, Speed, and Responsiveness Impact on Photosynthesis and Water Use Efficiency

The control of gaseous exchange between the leaf and bulk atmosphere by stomata governs CO₂ uptake for photosynthesis and transpiration, determining plant productivity and water use efficiency. The balance between these two processes depends on stomatal responses to environmental and internal cues and the synchrony of stomatal behavior relative to mesophyll demands for CO₂. Here we examine the rapidity of stomatal responses with attention to their relationship to photosynthetic CO₂ uptake and the consequences for water use. We discuss the influence of anatomical characteristics on the velocity of changes in stomatal conductance and explore the potential for manipulating the physical as well as physiological characteristics of stomatal guard cells in order to accelerate stomatal movements in synchrony with mesophyll CO₂ demand and to improve water use efficiency without substantial cost to photosynthetic carbon fixation. We conclude that manipulating guard cell transport and metabolism is just as, if not more likely to yield useful benefits as manipulations of their physical and anatomical characteristics. Achieving these benefits should be greatly facilitated by quantitative systems analysis that connects directly the molecular properties of the guard cells to their function in the field.

Asymmetry and uncertainties in biogeophysical climate–vegetation feedback over a range of CO<sub>2</sub> forcings

Abstract. Climate–vegetation feedback has the potential to significantly contribute to climate change, but little is known about its range of uncertainties. Here, using an Earth system model of intermediate complexity we address possible uncertainties in the strength of the biogeophysical climate–vegetation feedback using a single-model multi-physics ensemble. Equilibrium experiments with halving (140 ppm) and doubling (560 ppm) of CO2 give a contribution of the vegetation–climate feedback to global temperature change in the range −0.3 to −0.1 °C and −0.1 to 0.2 °C, respectively. There is an asymmetry between warming and cooling, with a larger, positive vegetation–climate feedback in the lower CO2 climate. Hotspots of climate–vegetation feedback are the boreal zone, the Amazon rainforest and the Sahara. Albedo parameterization is the dominant source of uncertainty in the subtropics and at high northern latitudes, while uncertainties in evapotranspiration are more relevant in the tropics. We analyse the separate impact of changes in stomatal conductance, leaf area index and vegetation dynamics on climate and we find that different processes are dominant in lower and higher CO2 worlds. The reduction in stomatal conductance gives the main contribution to temperature increase for a doubling of CO2, while dynamic vegetation is the dominant process in the CO2 halving experiments. Globally the climate–vegetation feedback is rather small compared to the sum of the fast climate feedbacks. However, it is comparable to the amplitude of the fast feedbacks at high northern latitudes where it can contribute considerably to polar amplification. The uncertainties in the climate–vegetation feedback are comparable to the multi-model spread of the fast climate feedbacks.

Are there interactive effects of physiological and radiative forcing produced by increased CO2 concentration on changes of land hydrological cycle?

Three coupled climate–carbon cycle models including CESM (Community Earth System Model), CanEsm (the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis Earth System Model) and BCC (Beijing Climate Center Climate System Model) were used to estimate whether changes in land hydrological cycle responded to the interactive effects of CO2-physiological forcing and CO2-radiative forcing. No signs could be indicated that the interactive effects of CO2-physiological forcing and CO2-radiative forcing on the hydrological variables (e.g. precipitation, evapotranspiration and runoff) were detected at global and regional scales. For each model, increases in precipitation, evapotranspiration and runoff (e.g. 0.37, 0.18 and 0.25mm/year2) were simulated in response to CO2-radiative forcing (experiment M3). Decreases in precipitation and evapotranspiration (about −0.02 and −0.09mm/year2) were captured if the CO2 physiological effect was only accounted for (experiment M2). In this experiment, a reverse sign in runoff (the increase of 0.08mm/year2) in contrast to M3 is presented. All models simulated the same signs across Eastern Asia in response to the CO2 physiological forcing and radiative forcing: increases in precipitation and evapotranspiration only considering greenhouse effect; reductions in precipitation and evapotranspiration in response to CO2-physiological effect; and enhanced trends in runoff from all experiments. However, there was still a large uncertainty on the magnitude of the effect of transpiration on runoff (decreased transpiration accounting for 8% to 250% of the increased runoff) from the three models. Two models (CanEsm and BCC) attributed most of the increase in runoff to the decrease in transpiration if the CO2-physiological effect was only accounted for, whereas CESM exhibited that the decrease in transpiration could not totally explain the increase in runoff. The attribution of the CO2-physiological forcing to changes in stomatal conductance versus changes in vegetation structure (e.g. increased Leaf Area Index) is an issue to discuss, and among the three models, no agreement appeared.

Foliar and litter needle carbon and oxygen isotope compositions relate to tree growth of an exotic pine plantation under different residue management regimes in subtropical Australia

Background and aim Significant differences in tree growth were observed in an exotic pine plantation under different harvest residue management regimes at ages 2–10 years. However, the variations in tree growth between residue management treatments could not be explained by soil and foliar nutrient analyses, except by potassium (K) concentration. Therefore, this study determined the carbon isotope composition (δ13C) and oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) of current and archived foliar samples from the exotic pine plantation to establish relationships with foliar K concentration and tree growth indices as a means to determine changes in stomatal conductance (gs) and photosynthetic rate (Amax) or water use efficiency (WUE), and therefore understand the variations in tree growth across treatments.

Ten-year exposure to elevated CO2 increases stomatal number of Pinus koraiensis and P. sylvestriformis needles

Stomatal number and stomatal conductance are important structural and functional parameters for the assessment of carbon assimilation and water use under elevated CO2. We studied stomatal density, number of stomatal rows and stomatal conductance of Pinus sylvestriformis and P. koraiensis needles exposed to elevated CO2 (500 μmol mol−1 CO2) in open-top chambers for 10 years (1999–2009). Elevated CO2 increased stomatal density on P. sylvestriformis by 10.8 % (13.5 % on abaxial surface and 8.0 % on adaxial surface) and the number of stomatal rows on P. koraiensis by 7.9 % (5.0 % in 1-year-old needles and 10.7 % in current-year needles). Increased stomatal density for P. sylvestriformis and number of stomatal rows for P. koraiensis indicate that elevated CO2 increases stomatal number in both tree species. Needle age significantly influenced stomatal density and number of stomatal rows in P. koraiensis but not in P. sylvestriformis. For both species, elevated CO2 did not significantly affect stomatal conductance but increased water use efficiency. The increase in stomatal number is not accompanied by significant changes in stomatal conductance at elevated CO2 for both tree species suggesting that there may be no direct relationship between stomatal conductance and stomatal numbers.

Growth, yield and fruit quality of ‘Tropic Snow’ peach on size-controlling rootstocks under dry Mediterranean climates

A six-year trial was carried out to evaluate the vegetative and productive performance of low-chill, early-ripening ‘Tropic Snow’ peach grown on five peach×almond rootstocks, different for their vigor. The study was conducted in south-western Sicily using 45 V-trained peach trees planted in 2005 and grafted on GF677, the most common rootstock in Sicily, and four low-vigor rootstocks selected at the Department of Agricultural, Food and Environmental Sciences, University of Pisa, namely IS5/8 (Polluce), IS5/19 (Castore), IS5/23, and IS5/29. Trunk circumference, winter and summer pruning weight, total number and weight of fruits per tree, and major fruit quality traits were recorded starting at the 3rd leaf. After fruit harvest in the 5th leaf, irrigation was withheld during the dry summer period (July–September). All IS selections reduced trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA) and pruning weight compared to GF677, with IS5/23 reducing TCSA by 62% and Castore, Polluce and IS5/29 by 32% by the 8th leaf. Yield efficiency was inversely related to tree vigor, with IS5/23 inducing the highest increase over GF677. Trees on IS5/23 exhibited 24–28% reductions of crop load and yield, whereas only IS5/29 increased fruit size compared to GF677. Postharvest water deficit induced significant yield declines in GF677, IS5/29 and IS5/23 in the following year. Low-vigor trees on Castore, Polluce and IS5/23 were more sensitive to changes in stomatal conductance in terms of carbon fixation, performing better than trees on GF677 and IS5/29 under non-limiting water conditions. Only minor rootstock effects on fruit quality were observed, with IS5/23 reducing significantly the final grower's profit. Overall, all low-vigor rootstocks performed decently, and in particular IS5/29 exhibited a good compromise between growth reduction, yield and fruit size, whereas Castore and Polluce may represent valid alternatives to GF677 for early peach production in dry Mediterranean areas.

Impactos das mudanças de cobertura vegetal nos processos de superfície na região semiárida do Brasil

A cobertura vegetal da superfície continental tem sido consideravelmente alterada pelas atividades humanas, principalmente através da conversão em grande escala da vegetação natural por áreas de cultivos e pastagens. Essas mudanças na cobertura da superfície podem alterar o clima regional e global por meio de processos biofísicos e biogeoquímicos. Assim, o presente trabalho avaliou como a substituição da vegetação natural da caatinga por agropecuária, bem como a degradação da caatinga, podem causar modificações nos processos de superfície na região semiárida do Nordeste do Brasil (NEB), a qual é uma das mais vulneráveis do Brasil, do ponto de vista social, à mudança de clima. Para isto, foram realizados experimentos numéricos de conversão da cobertura da superfície utilizando-se o modelo Integrated Biosphere Simulator - IBIS. Por meio da conversão da cobertura vegetal, as características morfológicas e biofísicas da vegetação foram modificadas e por isso, causaram alterações nas componentes dos balanços de energia, de água e de carbono. O balanço de energia foi mais afetado pelo aumento do albedo decorrente da alteração da vegetação caatinga para agropecuária e para caatinga degradada. Além disso, as alterações do comprimento de rugosidade e das propriedades estomáticas da vegetação corroboraram para as alterações ocorridas nas trocas turbulentas entre a superfície e a atmosfera. Com relação às componentes do balanço de carbono, durante a estação chuvosa com a conversão da caatinga natural para agropecuária, houve um aumento da assimilação de CO2 (NEE) e com isso maior Produtividade Primária Líquida do ecossistema (NPP). O contrário ocorreu com a conversão para caatinga degradada, na qual a assimilação se manteve próxima de zero durante as horas do dia e NPP foi reduzida, o que pode ter ocorrido em função das alterações ocorridas no Índice de Área Foliar (IAF), tanto para a agropecuária, como para a caatinga degradada.

Lower responsiveness of canopy evapotranspiration rate than of leaf stomatal conductance to open‐air CO2 elevation in rice

An elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2 ]) can reduce stomatal conductance of leaves for most plant species, including rice (Oryza sativa L.). However, few studies have quantified seasonal changes in the effects of elevated [CO2 ] on canopy evapotranspiration, which integrates the response of stomatal conductance of individual leaves with other responses, such as leaf area expansion, changes in leaf surface temperature, and changes in developmental stages, in field conditions. We conducted a field experiment to measure seasonal changes in stomatal conductance of the uppermost leaves and in the evapotranspiration, transpiration, and evaporation rates using a lysimeter method. The study was conducted for flooded rice under open-air CO2 elevation. Stomatal conductance decreased by 27% under elevated [CO2 ], averaged throughout the growing season, and evapotranspiration decreased by an average of 5% during the same period. The decrease in daily evapotranspiration caused by elevated [CO2 ] was more significantly correlated with air temperature and leaf area index (LAI) rather than with other parameters of solar radiation, days after transplanting, vapor-pressure deficit and FAO reference evapotranspiration. This indicates that higher air temperatures, within the range from 16 to 27°C, and a larger LAI, within the range from 0 to 4m(2) m(-2) , can increase the magnitude of the decrease in evapotranspiration rate caused by elevated [CO2 ]. The crop coefficient (i.e. the evapotranspiration rate divided by the FAO reference evapotranspiration rate) was 1.24 at ambient [CO2 ] and 1.17 at elevated [CO2 ]. This study provides the first direct measurement of the effects of elevated [CO2 ] on rice canopy evapotranspiration under open-air conditions using the lysimeter method, and the results will improve future predictions of water use in rice fields.

Industrial-age changes in atmospheric [CO2] and temperature differentially alter responses of faster- and slower-growing Eucalyptus seedlings to short-term drought

Climate change may alter forest composition by differentially affecting the responses of faster- and slower-growing tree species to drought. However, the combined effects of rising atmospheric CO2 concentration ([CO2]) and temperature on drought responses of trees are poorly understood. Here, we examined interactive effects of temperature (ambient, ambient + °C) and [CO2] (290, 400 and 650mu;l l(-1)) on drought responses of Eucalyptus saligna Sm. (faster-growing) and E. sideroxylon A. Cunn. ex Woolls (slower-growing) seedlings. Drought was imposed via a controlled reduction in soil water over 1-2 weeks, re-watering seedlings when leaves visibly wilted. In ambient temperature, the effect of drought on the light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (Asat) in E. saligna decreased as [CO2] increased from pre-industrial to future concentrations, but rising [CO2] did not affect the response in Eucalyptus sideroxylon. In contrast, elevated temperature exacerbated the effect of drought in reducing Asat in both species. The drought response of Asat reflected changes in stomatal conductance (gs) associated with species and treatment differences in (i) utilization of soil moisture and (ii) leaf area ratio (leaf area per unit plant dry mass). Across [CO2] and temperature treatments, E. saligna wilted at higher soil water potentials compared with E. sideroxylon. Photosynthetic recovery from drought was 90% complete 2 days following re-watering across all species and treatments. Our results suggest that E. saligna (faster-growing) seedlings are more susceptible to drought than E. sideroxylon (slower-growing) seedlings. The greater susceptibility to drought of E. saligna reflected faster drawdown of soil moisture, associated with more leaf area and leaf area ratio, and the ability of E. sideroxylon to maintain higher gs at a given soil moisture. Inclusion of a pre-industrial [CO2] treatment allowed us to conclude that susceptibility of these species to short-term drought under past and future climates may be regulated by the same mechanisms. Further, the beneficial effects of rising [CO2] and deleterious effects of elevated temperature on seedling response to drought were generally offsetting, suggesting susceptibility of seedlings of these species to short-term drought in future climates that is similar to pre-industrial and current climate conditions.

Responses of leaf night transpiration to drought stress in Vitis vinifera L.

Night-time transpiration (Enight) is potentially an important factor affecting whole-plant water balance and, thus, water use efficiency. The aims of the present study were: to evaluate night-time changes of stomatal conductance (gnight) and transpiration under different soil water availability conditions for seven grapevine cultivars and to compare leaf-level estimates of night-time water losses with more realistic whole-plant estimates in plants growing outdoors. Two experiments were conducted on seven grapevine cultivars (Vitis vinifera L.) growing in pots maintained at field capacity and drought stress conditions. Night transpiration was evaluated by leaf gas exchange and plant mass measurements. Results showed that Enight and gnight were far above cuticular values, suggesting sustained stomatal aperture during night-time which was reduced under drought stress. Differences between cultivars were found in the extent of drought stress-induced reduction of Enight (from a 36% reduction in Escursac to 82% in Malvasia). However, transpiration losses calculated on the basis of leaf gas exchange measurements often over-estimated the actual whole plant water loss, suggesting the presence of some water inputs to pots/plants during the night, presumably due to dew deposition. Significant stomatal opening persists during the night in irrigated grapevines, leading to substantial water losses by transpiration. Those water losses are significantly reduced under drought stress. It is remarkable that night-time plant water losses can be partially or fully compensated by dew deposition. Therefore, instantaneous leaf gas exchange measurements can result in an over-estimation of the night water losses. The present study shows for the first time that night transpiration due to partially open stomata can be compensated by dew deposition.

Local and Remote Climate Impacts from Expansion of Woody Biomass for Bioenergy Feedstock in the Southeastern United States

Many efforts have been taken to find energy alternatives to reduce anthropogenic influences on climate. Recent studies have shown that using land for bioenergy plantations may be more cost effective and provide a greater potential for CO2 abatement than using land for carbon sequestration. Native southern U.S. pines (i.e., loblolly) have excellent potential as bioenergy feedstocks. However, the land-cover change due to expansion of biofuels may impact climate through biophysical feedbacks. Here, the authors access the local and remote consequences of greater forest management and biofuel feedstock expansion on climate and hydrology using a global climate model, the NCAR Community Climate System Model, version 4 (CCSM4). The authors examine a plausible U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) biofuel feedstock goal by afforesting 50 million acres of C4 grasslands in the southeastern United States with an optimized loblolly plant functional type. Changes in sensible and latent heat fluxes are related to increased surface roughness, reduced bare-ground evaporation, and changes in stomatal conductance. In the coupled simulations, these mechanisms lead to a 1°C cooling, higher atmospheric stability, and a more shallow planetary boundary layer over the southeastern United States during the summer; in winter, a cooling of up to 0.25°C between 40° and 60°N, a weakened Aleutian low, and a wetter Australia occurs. A weakened Aleutian low shifts the North Pacific storm track poleward in the future loblolly scenarios. These local and global impacts suggest that biophysical feedbacks need to be considered when evaluating the benefits of bioenergy feedstock production.

Needle metabolome, freezing tolerance and gas exchange in Norway spruce seedlings exposed to elevated temperature and ozone concentration

Northern forests are currently experiencing increasing mean temperatures, especially during autumn and spring. Consequently, alterations in carbon sequestration, leaf biochemical quality and freezing tolerance (FT) are likely to occur. The interactive effects of elevated temperature and ozone (O(3)), the most harmful phytotoxic air pollutant, on Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlings were studied by analysing phenology, metabolite concentrations in the needles, FT and gas exchange. Sampling was performed in September and May. The seedlings were exposed to a year-round elevated temperature (+1.3 °C), and to 1.4× ambient O(3) concentration during the growing season in the field. Elevated temperature increased the concentrations of amino acids, organic acids of the citric acid cycle and some carbohydrates, and reduced the concentrations of phenolic compounds, some organic acids of the shikimic acid pathway, sucrose, cyclitols and steroids, depending on the timing of the sampling. Although growth onset occurred earlier at elevated temperature, the temperature of 50% lethality (LT(50)) was similar in the treatments. Photosynthesis and the ratio of photosynthesis to dark respiration were reduced by elevated temperature. Elevated concentrations of O(3) reduced the total concentration of soluble sugars, and tended to reduce LT(50) of the needles in September. These results show that alterations in needle chemical quality can be expected at elevated temperatures, but the seedlings' sensitivity to autumn and spring frosts is not altered. Elevated O(3) has the potential to disturb cold hardening of Norway spruce seedlings in autumn, and to alter the water balance of the seedling through changes in stomatal conductance (g(s)), while elevated temperature is likely to reduce g(s) and consequently reduce the O(3)-flux inside the leaves.

Contribution of leaf nitrogen to photosynthetic gas exchange in contrasting rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars during the grain-filling period

Photosynthetic parameters and leaf carbon isotope composition (δ13C) in contrasting rice genotypes in relation to supplemental nitrogen (N) application and water management during the grain-filling period were compared. The changes in stomatal conductance (g s) and ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 mole fraction (C i/C a) depended on the leaf nitrogen concentration (leaf N) in both 'Hinohikari' (temperate japonica genotype) and 'IR36' (indica genotype). In 'Hinohikari', δ13C reflects photosynthetic gas exchange during the grain-filling period, which is indicated by the significant response of δ13C to leaf N. In contrast, in 'IR36' δ13C did not depend on leaf N. This varietal difference in δ13C to leaf N can be attributed to a difference in the timing of leaf senescence. In 'IR36', leaf N and photosynthetic parameters decreased more rapidly, indicating earlier senescence and a shorter grain-filling period in comparison with 'Hinohikari'. The significant increase in shoot dry mass in 'Hinohikari' resulting from supplemental N application, compared with nonsignificant effect observed in 'IR36', suggests that the timing of senescence in relation to the grainfilling period has a preponderant influence on productivity.

Source strength increases with the increasing precociousness of fruit maturation in field-grown clones of conilon coffee (Coffea canephora) trees

In earlier-maturing coffee clones, owing to the shorter time required for fruit filling and ripening, photo- assimilates should be transported to fruits in a period shorter than that found in intermediate- or late-maturing clones. We hypothesised that at a given source-to-sink ratio, a presumably greater sink strength in early-maturing clones relative to intermediate- and late-maturing individ- uals should be correlated to increased rate of net carbon assimilation (A) and greater photo-assimilate transport to the fruits. Overall, earlier-maturing clones displayed greater A rates than the intermediate-maturing clones, which, in turn, had higher A than their late counterparts. Changes in A were largely associated with changes in stomatal conductance. Only marginal alterations occurred in the internal-to-ambient CO2 concentration ratio, the carbon isotope composition ratio, soluble sugars and chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters. Some changes in starch pools were detected among treatments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report showing evidence that increased precociousness of fruit growth and matura- tion results in higher A and thus increased source strength, a fact associated to a large degree with higher stomatal aperture.

Changes in stomatal conductance along grass blades reflect changes in leaf structure

Identifying the consequences of grass blade morphology (long, narrow leaves) on the heterogeneity of gas exchange is fundamental to an understanding of the physiology of this growth form. We examined acropetal changes in anatomy, hydraulic conductivity and rates of gas exchange in five grass species (including C(3) and C(4) functional types). Both stomatal conductance and photosynthesis increased along all grass blades despite constant light availability. Hydraulic efficiency within the xylem remained constant along the leaf, but structural changes outside the xylem changed in concert with stomatal conductance. Stomatal density and stomatal pore index remained constant along grass blades but interveinal distance decreased acropetally resulting in a decreased path length for water movement from vascular bundle to stomate. The increase in stomatal conductance was correlated with the decreased path length through the leaf mesophyll. A strong correlation between the distance from vascular bundles to stomatal pores and stomatal conductance has been identified across species; our results suggest this relationship also exists within individual leaves.

Light sensitivity of shoot hydraulic conductance in five temperate deciduous tree species.

The light sensitivity of the shoot hydraulic conductance in five temperate deciduous tree species was measured using two methods to clarify the role of light sensitivity and the suitability of the methods used to study it. The light sensitivity measured using a method that included an interruption of ≤10min in shoot light acclimation did not differ from that measured using a method with continuous illumination. The 'noncontinuous light' methods are suitable for measuring hydraulic conductance and its light response. Light sensitivity correlated with other leaf water traits as follows: positively with the ion-mediated increase in xylem hydraulic conductance; a relative decrease in the hydraulic conductance of the laminae in response to HgCl2; a relative change in stomatal conductance in response to changes in PAR intensity or atmospheric CO2 concentration, or to a decrease in air humidity or leaf water potential; and with instantaneous water use efficiency. The traits correlated negatively with shoot hydraulic conductance, stomatal conductance and relative increases in stomatal conductance in response to increases in leaf water potential. We suggest that high light sensitivity should be considered as one of the characteristics of conservative water use in trees. Low blue light increased shoot hydraulic conductance to a similar extent to moderate white light and twice as much as moderate red light. Blue light perception is important in the light sensitivity mechanism.

Growth, biomass allocation, and water use efficiency of 31 apple cultivars grown under two water regimes

Plant growth, biomass allocation, carbon isotope composition (δ13C), and water use efficiency (WUE) of 31 cultivars of apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) grown under two water regimes were measured. Drought-stressed plants showed significant declines in tree height, trunk diameter, biomass production, and total leaf area, the extent to which depended upon cultivar. Also, gas exchange rates, instantaneous and long-term efficiencies (WUEI and WUEL, respectively), and values for δ13C differed among cultivars and watering regimes. Variations in WUEI were mainly due to changes in stomatal conductance (gs) under drought condition. ‘Qinguan’ and ‘Golden Delicious’ had greater trunk diameter, tree height, and had higher biomass production and WUEL under drought stress, implying that they are more suitable for arid and semi-arid regions. Moreover, WUEL was significantly and positively correlated with δ13C under two watering regimes, which suggests a potential for evaluating water use efficiency of Malus by measuring carbon isotope composition.

Responses of stomatal conductance to simultaneous changes in two environmental factors

To clarify interactions between stomatal responses to two simultaneous environmental changes, the rates of change in stomatal conductance were measured after simultaneously changing two environmental factors from the set of air humidity, leaf water potential (hydraulic environmental factors), air CO(2) concentration and light intensity (photosynthetic environmental factors). The stomatal responses to changes in leaf water potential were not significantly modified by any other simultaneous environmental change. A decrease in air humidity was followed by a decrease in stomatal conductance, and an increase in air humidity was followed by an increase in the conductance, irrespective of the character of the simultaneous change in the photosynthetic environmental factor. If the simultaneous change had an opposite effect on stomatal conductance, the rate of change in stomatal conductance was higher than the theoretical summed rate-the sum of the rate following one environmental change and the rate following another environmental change, measured separately. That is, the stomatal response to air humidity dominated over the responses to photosynthetic environmental factors. Yet, if the simultaneous change in photosynthetic factors had a codirectional effect on stomatal conductance, the rate of stomatal conductance change was lower than the theoretical summed rate. After a simultaneous change of two photosynthetic environmental factors, the rate of stomatal conductance change was very similar to the theoretical rate, if both the environmental changes had a codirectional effect on stomatal conductance. If the changes in the photosynthetic factors had opposite effects on stomatal conductance, the conductance increased, irrespective of the character of the increasing environmental factor. In drought-stressed trees, the rates of change in stomatal conductance tended to differ from the theoretical summed rates more than in well-watered trees. Stomatal closure following an increase in CO(2) concentration was the stomatal response that was most strongly suppressed by the response to another simultaneous environmental change. Six species of temperate deciduous trees were shown to be similar in their relations between the stomatal responses to two simultaneous environmental changes. The mechanism and ecological significance of the interactions between the two signal response pathways of stomata are discussed.
