Probing Populations of Dark Stellar Remnants in the Globular Clusters 47 Tuc and Terzan 5 Using Pulsar Timing

We present a new method to combine multimass equilibrium dynamical models and pulsar timing data to constrain the mass distribution and remnant populations of Milky Way globular clusters (GCs). We first apply this method to 47 Tuc, a cluster for which there exists an abundance of stellar kinematic data and which is also host to a large population of millisecond pulsars. We demonstrate that the pulsar timing data allow us to place strong constraints on the overall mass distribution and remnant populations even without fitting on stellar kinematics. Our models favor a small population of stellar-mass black holes (BHs) in this cluster (with a total mass of 446−72+75M⊙ ), arguing against the need for a large (>2000 M ⊙) central intermediate-mass BH. We then apply the method to Terzan 5, a heavily obscured bulge cluster that hosts the largest population of millisecond pulsars of any Milky Way GC and for which the collection of conventional stellar kinematic data is very limited. We improve existing constraints on the mass distribution and structural parameters of this cluster and place stringent constraints on its black hole content, finding an upper limit on the mass in BHs of ∼4000 M ⊙. This method allows us to probe the central dynamics of GCs even in the absence of stellar kinematic data and can be easily applied to other GCs with pulsar timing data, for which data sets will continue to grow with the next generation of radio telescopes.

Identification of Intermediate-mass Black Hole Candidates among a Sample of Sd Galaxies

We analyzed images of every northern hemisphere Sd galaxy listed in the Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies with a relatively face-on inclination (θ ≤ 30°). Specifically, we measured the spiral arms’ winding angle, ϕ, in 85 galaxies. We applied a novel black hole mass planar scaling relation involving the rotational velocities (from the literature) and pitch angles of each galaxy to predict central black hole masses. This yielded 23 galaxies, each having at least a 50% chance of hosting a central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH), 102 < M • ≤ 105 M ☉. These 23 nearby (≲50 Mpc) targets may be suitable for an array of follow-up observations to check for active nuclei. Based on our full sample of 85 Sd galaxies, we estimate that the typical Sd galaxy (which tends to be bulgeless) harbors a black hole with log(M•/M☉)=6.00±0.14 , but with a 27.7% chance of hosting an IMBH, making this morphological type of galaxy fertile ground for hunting elusive IMBHs. Thus, we find that a ∼106 M ☉ black hole corresponds roughly to the onset of bulge development and serves as a conspicuous waypoint along the galaxy–supermassive black hole coevolution journey. Our survey suggests that >1.22% of bright galaxies (B T ≲ 15.5 mag) in the local Universe host an IMBH (i.e., the “occupation fraction”), which implies a number density >4.96 × 10−6 Mpc−3 for central IMBHs. Finally, we observe that Sd galaxies exhibit an unexpected diversity of properties that resemble the general population of spiral galaxies, albeit with an enhanced signature of the eponymous prototypical traits (i.e., low masses, loosely wound spiral arms, and smaller rotational velocities).

An escaping outflow in a galaxy with an intermediate-mass black hole

ABSTRACT While in massive galaxies active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback plays an important role, the role of AGN feedback is still under debate in dwarf galaxies. With well spatially resolved data obtained from the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, we identify a spatially extended ($\rm \sim 3\,\, kpc$) and fast ($V_{80} \sim 471\,\, \rm km\,\,s^{-1}$) AGN-driven outflow in a dwarf galaxy: Sloan Digital Sky Survey J022849.51-090153.8 with $M_{*} \sim 10^{9.6}\,\,{\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }}$ that host an intermediate-mass black hole of $M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^5\,\,{\rm {\rm M}_{\odot }}$ and LAGN/LEdd ∼ 0.15. Through the measurement of the rotation curve, we estimate the escape velocity of the halo and the ratio of the outflow velocity to the halo escape velocity to be 1.09 ± 0.04, indicating that the outflow is capable of escaping not only the galaxy disc but the halo. The outflow size of our AGN is found to be larger than AGN in massive galaxies at the given AGN [O iii] luminosity, while the size of the photoionized narrow-line region is comparable. These results suggest the important role of AGN feedback through outflows in dwarf galaxies when their central intermediate-mass black holes accrete at high-Eddington ratios.

Adiabatically compressed wave dark matter halo and intermediate-mass-ratio inspirals

The adiabatic growth of a central massive black hole could compress the surrounding dark matter halo, leading to a steeper profile of the dark matter halo. This phenomenon is called adiabatic compression. We investigate the adiabatic compression of wave dark matter - a light bosonic dark matter candidate with its mass smaller than a few eV. Using the adiabatic theorem, we show that the adiabatic compression leads to a much denser wave dark matter halo similar to the particle dark matter halo in the semiclassical limit. The compressed wave halo differs from that of the particle halo near the center where the semiclassical approximation breaks down, and the central profile depends on dark matter and the central black hole mass as they determine whether the soliton and low angular momentum modes can survive over the astrophysical time scale without being absorbed by the black hole. Such a compressed profile has several astrophysical implications. As one example, we study the gravitational waves from the inspiral between a central intermediate-mass black hole and a compact solar-mass object within the wave dark matter halo. Due to the enhanced mass density, the compressed wave dark matter halo exerts stronger dynamical friction on the orbiting object, leading to the dephasing of the gravitational waves. The pattern of dephasing is distinctive from that of inspirals in the particle dark matter halo because of the difference in density profile and because of the relatively suppressed dynamical friction force, originating from the wave nature of dark matter. We investigate the prospects of future gravitational wave detectors, such as Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, and identify physics scenarios where the wave dark matter halo can be reconstructed from gravitational wave observations.

Using binaries in globular clusters to catch sight of intermediate-mass black holes

ABSTRACT The dynamical evolution of globular clusters (GCs) is tied to their binary population, as binaries segregate to the cluster centre, leading to an increased binary fraction in the core. This central overabundance of mainly hard binaries can serve as a source of energy for the cluster and has a significant effect on the observed kinematics, such as artificially increasing the observed line-of-sight velocity dispersion. We analyse the binary fractions and distributions of 95 simulated GCs, with and without an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) in their centre. We show that an IMBH will not only halt the segregation of binaries towards the cluster centre, but also, directly and indirectly, disrupt the binaries that segregate, thus, depleting binaries in the cluster core. We illustrate this by showing that clusters with an IMBH have fewer binaries and flatter radial binary distributions than their counterparts without one. These differences in the binary fraction and distribution provide an additional indicator for the presence of a central IMBH in GCs. In addition, we analyse the effects of the binary fraction on the line-of-sight velocity dispersion in the simulated GCs and find that binaries can cause an overestimation of up to $70 \rm {per \, cent}$ of the velocity dispersion within the core radius. Using recent VLT/MUSE observations of NGC 3201 by Giesers et al. (2019), we find an overestimation of $32.2\pm 7.8 \rm {per \, cent}$ in the velocity dispersion that is consistent with the simulations and illustrates the importance of accurately accounting for the binary population when performing kinematic or dynamical analysis.

Does NGC 6397 contain an intermediate-mass black hole or a more diffuse inner subcluster?

We analyze proper motions from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the second Gaia data release along with line-of-sight velocities from the MUSE spectrograph to detect imprints of an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) in the center of the nearby, core-collapsed, globular cluster NGC 6397. For this, we use the new MAMPOSST-PM Bayesian mass-modeling code, along with updated estimates of the surface density profile of NGC 6397. We consider different priors on velocity anisotropy and on the size of the central mass, and we also separate the stars into components of different mean mass to allow for mass segregation. The velocity ellipsoid is very isotropic throughout the cluster, as expected in post-core collapsed clusters subject to as strong a Galactic tidal field as NGC 6397. There is strong evidence for a central dark component of 0.8 to 2% of the total mass of the cluster. However, we find robust evidence disfavoring a central IMBH in NGC 6397, preferring instead a diffuse dark inner subcluster of unresolved objects with a total mass of 1000 to 2000 M⊙, half of which is concentrated within 6 arcsec (2% of the stellar effective radius). These results require the combination of HST and Gaia data: HST for the inner diagnostics and Gaia for the outer surface density and velocity anisotropy profiles. The small effective radius of the diffuse dark component suggests that it is composed of compact stars (white dwarfs and neutron stars) and stellar-mass black holes, whose inner locations are caused by dynamical friction given their high progenitor masses. We show that stellar-mass black holes should dominate the mass of this diffuse dark component, unless more than 25% escape from the cluster. Their mergers in the cores of core-collapsed globular clusters could be an important source of the gravitational wave events detected by LIGO.

Generation of gravitational waves and tidal disruptions in clumpy galaxies

ABSTRACT Obtaining a better understanding of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) is crucial, as their properties could shed light on the origin and growth of their supermassive counterparts. Massive star-forming clumps, which are present in a large fraction of massive galaxies at z ∼ 1–3, are among the venues wherein IMBHs could reside. We perform a series of Fokker–Planck simulations to explore the occurrence of tidal disruption (TD) and gravitational wave (GW) events about an IMBH in a massive star-forming clump, modelling the latter so that its mass ($10^8 \, {\rm M}_{\odot}$) and effective radius (100 pc) are consistent with the properties of both observed and simulated clumps. We find that the TD and GW event rates are in the ranges of 10−6 to 10−5 and 10−8 to 10−7 yr−1, respectively, depending on the assumptions for the initial inner density profile of the system (ρ ∝ r−2 or ∝ r−1) and the initial mass of the central IMBH (105 or $10^3\, {\rm M}_{\odot}$). By integrating the GW event rate over z = 1–3, we expect that the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna will be able to detect ∼2 GW events per year coming from these massive clumps; the intrinsic rate of TD events from these systems amounts instead to a few 103 per year, a fraction of which will be observable by e.g. the Square Kilometre Array and the Advanced Telescope for High Energy Astrophysics. In conclusion, our results support the idea that the forthcoming GW and electromagnetic facilities may have the unprecedented opportunity of unveiling the lurking population of IMBHs.

Dynamical modelling of globular clusters: challenges for the robust determination of IMBH candidates

ABSTRACTThe presence or absence of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) at the centre of Milky Way globular clusters (GCs) is still an open question. This is due to either observational restrictions or limitations in the dynamical modelling method; in this work, we explore the latter. Using a sample of high-end Monte Carlo simulations of GCs, with and without a central IMBH, we study the limitations of spherically symmetric Jeans models assuming constant velocity anisotropy and mass-to-light ratio. This dynamical method is one of the most widely used modelling approaches to identify a central IMBH in observations.With these models, we are able to robustly identify and recover the mass of the central IMBH in our simulation with a high-mass IMBH ($M_{\rm IMBH}/M_{\rm GC}\sim 4{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$). Simultaneously, we show that it is challenging to confirm the existence of a low-mass IMBH ($M_{\rm IMBH}/M_{\rm GC}\sim 0.3{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$), as both solutions with and without an IMBH are possible within our adopted error bars. For simulations without an IMBH, we do not find any certain false detection of an IMBH. However, we obtain upper limits that still allow for the presence of a central IMBH. We conclude that while our modelling approach is reliable for the high-mass IMBH and does not seem to lead towards a false detection of a central IMBH, it lacks the sensitivity to robustly identify a low-mass IMBH and to definitely rule out the presence of an IMBH when it is not there.

Planetary systems in a star cluster II: intermediate-mass black holes and planetary systems

ABSTRACT Most stars form in dense stellar environments. It is speculated that some dense star clusters may host intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), which may have formed from runaway collisions between high-mass stars, or from the mergers of less massive black holes. Here, we numerically explore the evolution of populations of planets in star clusters with an IMBH. We study the dynamical evolution of single-planet systems and free-floating planets, over a period of 100 Myr, in star clusters without an IMBH, and in clusters with a central IMBH of mass $100\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ or $200\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$. In the central region ($r\lesssim 0.2$ pc), the IMBH’s tidal influence on planetary systems is typically 10 times stronger than the average neighbour star. For a star cluster with a $200\, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ IMBH, the region in which the IMBH’s influence is stronger within the virial radius (∼1 pc). The IMBH quenches mass segregation, and the stars in the core tend to move towards intermediate regions. The ejection rate of both stars and planets is higher when an IMBH is present. The rate at which planets are expelled from their host star rate is higher for clusters with higher IMBH masses, for t &amp;lt; 0.5trh, while remains mostly constant while the star cluster fills its Roche lobe, similar to a star cluster without an IMBH. The disruption rate of planetary systems is higher in initially denser clusters, and for wider planetary orbits, but this rate is substantially enhanced by the presence of a central IMBH.

A parsec-scale radio jet launched by the central intermediate-mass black hole in the dwarf galaxy SDSS J090613.77+561015.2

ABSTRACT The population of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) in nearby dwarf galaxies plays an important ‘ground truth’ role in exploring black hole formation and growth in the early Universe. In the dwarf elliptical galaxy SDSS J090613.77+561015.2 (z = 0.0465), an accreting IMBH has been revealed by optical and X-ray observations. Aiming to search for possible radio core and jet associated with the IMBH, we carried out very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations with the European VLBI Network at 1.66 GHz. Our imaging results show that there are two 1-mJy components with a separation of about 52 mas (projected distance 47 pc) and the more compact component is located within the 1σ error circle of the optical centroid from available Gaia astrometry. Based on their positions, elongated structures and relatively high brightness temperatures, as well as the absence of star-forming activity in the host galaxy, we argue that the radio morphology originates from the jet activity powered by the central IMBH. The existence of the large-scale jet implies that violent jet activity might occur in the early epochs of black hole growth and thus help to regulate the co-evolution of black holes and galaxies.

On the black hole content and initial mass function of 47 Tuc

ABSTRACT The globular cluster (GC) 47 Tuc has recently been proposed to host an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) or a population of stellar mass black holes (BHs). To shed light on its dark content, we present an application of self-consistent multimass models with a varying mass function and content of stellar remnants, which we fit to various observational constraints. Our best-fitting model successfully matches the observables and correctly predicts the radial distribution of millisecond pulsars and their gravitational accelerations inferred from long-term timing observations. The data favours a population of BHs with a total mass of $430^{+386}_{-301}$ M⊙, but the most likely model has very few BHs. Since our models do not include a central IMBH and accurately reproduce the observations, we conclude that there is currently no need to invoke the presence of an IMBH in 47 Tuc. The global present-day mass function inferred is significantly depleted in low-mass stars (power-law slope $\alpha =-0.52^{+0.17}_{-0.16}$). Given the orbit and predicted mass-loss history of this massive GC, the dearth of low-mass stars is difficult to explain with a standard initial mass function (IMF) followed by long-term preferential escape of low-mass stars driven by two-body relaxation, and instead suggests that 47 Tuc may have formed with a bottom-light IMF. We discuss alternative evolutionary origins for the flat mass function and ways to reconcile this with the low BH retention fraction. Finally, by capturing the effect of dark remnants, our method offers a new way to probe the IMF in a GC above the current main-sequence turn-off mass, for which we find a slope of −2.49 ± 0.08.

No evidence for intermediate-mass black holes in the globular clusters ω Cen and NGC 6624

ABSTRACT We compare the results of a large grid of N-body simulations with the surface brightness and velocity dispersion profiles of the globular clusters ω Cen and NGC 6624. Our models include clusters with varying stellar-mass black hole retention fractions and varying masses of a central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). We find that an $\sim 45\, 000$ M⊙ IMBH, whose presence has been suggested based on the measured velocity dispersion profile of ω Cen, predicts the existence of about 20 fast-moving, m &amp;gt; 0.5 M⊙, main-sequence stars with a (1D) velocity v &amp;gt; 60 km s−1 in the central 20 arcsec of ω Cen. However, no such star is present in the HST/ACS proper motion catalogue of Bellini et al. (2017), strongly ruling out the presence of a massive IMBH in the core of ω Cen. Instead, we find that all available data can be fitted by a model that contains 4.6 per cent of the mass of ω Cen in a centrally concentrated cluster of stellar-mass black holes. We show that this mass fraction in stellar-mass BHs is compatible with the predictions of stellar evolution models of massive stars. We also compare our grid of N-body simulations with NGC 6624, a cluster recently claimed to harbour a 20 000 M⊙ black hole based on timing observations of millisecond pulsars. However, we find that models with MIMBH &amp;gt; 1000 M⊙ IMBHs are incompatible with the observed velocity dispersion and surface brightness profile of NGC 6624, ruling out the presence of a massive IMBH in this cluster. Models without an IMBH provide again an excellent fit to NGC 6624.

Eccentric binary black hole mergers in globular clusters hosting intermediate-mass black holes

Abstract Globular clusters (GCs) may harbour intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) at their centres. In these dynamically active environments, stellar-mass black holes (SBHs) sink to the centre soon after formation, due to dynamical friction and start interacting among themselves and with the central IMBH. Likely, some of the SBHs will form bound systems with the IMBH. A fraction of those will be triple systems composed of binary SBHs and the IMBH acting as a third distant perturber. If the SBH binary orbit is sufficiently inclined, it can develop Lidov–Kozai (LK) oscillations, which can drive the system to high eccentricities and eventually to a merger due to gravitational wave (GW) emission on short time-scales. In this work, we focus on the dynamics of the IMBH–SBH–SBH triples and illustrate that these systems can be possible sources of GWs. A distinctive signature of this scenario is that a considerable fraction of these mergers are highly eccentric when entering the LIGO band (10 Hz). Assuming that $\sim 20{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of GCs host IMBHs and a GC density in the range $n_{{\rm GC}}=0.32\!-\!2.31\, \mathrm{Mpc}^{-3}$, we have estimated a rate $\Gamma =0.06\!-\!0.46\, \mathrm{Gpc}^{-3}\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ of these events. This suggests that dynamically driven binary SBH mergers in this scenario could contribute to the merger events observed by LIGO/VIRGO. Full N-body simulations of GCs harbouring IMBHs are highly desirable to give a more precise constrain on this scenario.

Intermediate mass black holes in globular clusters: effects on jerks and jounces of millisecond pulsars

Globular clusters may host intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) at their centres. Here we propose a new method for their identification using millisecond pulsars (MSPs) as probes. We show that measuring the first (jerk) and second (jounce) derivatives of the accelerations of an ensemble of MSPs will let us infer the presence of an IMBH in a globular cluster better than measuring the sole accelerations. We test this concept by simulating a set of star clusters with and without a central IMBH to extract the distributions of the stellar jerks and jounces. We then apply this technique to the ensemble of MSPs in the Galactic globular cluster 47 Tucanae. Current timing observations are insufficient to constrain the presence of an IMBH and can only be used to pose upper limits on its mass. But, with few more years of observations it will be possible to test for the presence of a central IMBH with mass smaller than $\sim$ 1000 M$_{\odot}$. We conclude that jerks and jounces help significantly in reducing the upper limit of the mass of IMBHs in Galactic globular clusters.

On the presence of intermediate black holes in three globular clusters

AbstractWe investigate whether the globular clusters 47 Tuc, ω Cen and NGC 6624 contain intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) by fitting a large grid of N-body simulations against their surface density and velocity dispersion profiles. In our simulations we vary the initial cluster size, the initial mass function and the initial density profile of the clusters as well as the mass fraction of a central intermediate-mass black hole. We find that the surface density and velocity dispersion profiles of all three clusters can be better reproduced by models that do not contain a central IMBH than by any of our IMBH models. If ω Cen and NGC 6624 contain any IMBHs at all, they have to be significantly less massive than suggested in the past.

A Multimass Velocity Dispersion Model of 47 Tucanae Indicates No Evidence for an Intermediate-mass Black Hole

Abstract In this paper, we analyze stellar proper motions in the core of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae to explore the possibility of an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) influence on the stellar dynamics. Our use of short-wavelength photometry affords us an exceedingly clear view of stellar motions into the very center of the crowded core, yielding proper motions for &gt;50,000 stars in the central 2′. We model the velocity dispersion profile of the cluster using an isotropic Jeans model. The density distribution is taken as a central IMBH point mass added to a combination of King templates. We individually model the general low-mass cluster objects (main sequence/giant stars), as well as the concentrated populations of heavy binary systems and dark stellar remnants. Using unbinned likelihood model fitting, we find that the inclusion of the concentrated populations in our model plays a crucial role in fitting for an IMBH mass. The concentrated binaries and stellar-mass black holes (BHs) produce a sufficient velocity dispersion signal in the core so as to make an IMBH unnecessary to fit the observations. We additionally determine that a stellar-mass BH retention fraction of ≳8.5% becomes incompatible with our observed velocities in the core.

Correlation between mass segregation and structural concentration in relaxed stellar clusters

Abstract The level of mass segregation in the core of globular clusters has been previously proposed as a potential indicator of the dynamical constituents of the system, such as presence of a significant population of stellar-mass black holes (BHs), or even a central intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH). However, its measurement is limited to clusters with high-quality Hubble Space Telescope data. Thanks to a set of state-of-the-art direct N-body simulations with up to 200k particles inclusive of stellar evolution, primordial binaries, and varying BH/neutron stars, we highlight for the first time the existence of a clear and tight linear relation between the degree of mass segregation and the cluster structural concentration index. The latter is defined as the ratio of the radii containing 5 per cent and 50 per cent of the integrated light (R5/R50), making it robustly measurable without the need to individually resolve low-mass stars. Our simulations indicate that given R5/R50, the mass segregation Δm (defined as the difference in main-sequence median mass between centre and half-light radius) is expressed as Δm/M⊙ = −1.166R5/R50 + 0.3246, with a root-mean-square error of 0.0148. In addition, we can explain its physical origin and the values of the fitted parameters through basic analytical modelling. Such correlation is remarkably robust against a variety of initial conditions (including presence of primordial binaries and IMBHs) and cluster ages, with a slight dependence in best-fitting parameters on the prescriptions used to measure the quantities involved. Therefore, this study highlights the potential to develop a new observational tool to gain insight on the dynamical status of globular clusters and on its dark remnants.

Growth of intermediate mass black holes by tidal disruption events in the first star clusters

We study the stellar dynamics of the first star clusters after intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) are formed via runaway stellar collisions. We use the outputs of cosmological simulations of Sakurai et al. (2017) to follow the star cluster evolution in a live dark matter (DM) halo. Mass segregation within a cluster promotes massive stars to be captured by the central IMBH occasionally, causing tidal disruption events (TDEs). We find that the TDE rate scales with the IMBH mass as $\dot{N}_{\rm TDE}\sim0.3\,{\rm Myr}^{-1}(M_{\rm IMBH}/1000\,{\rm M}_{\odot})^2$. The DM component affects the star cluster evolution by stripping stars from the outer part. When the DM density within the cluster increases, the velocity dispersion of the stars increases, and then the TDE rate decreases. By the TDEs, the central IMBHs grow to as massive as $700-2500\,{\rm M}_{\odot}$ in 15 million years. The IMBHs are possible seeds for the formation of supermassive BHs observed at $z\gtrsim 6-7$, if a large amount of gas is supplied through galaxy mergers and/or large-scale gas accretion, or they might remain as IMBHs from the early epochs to the present-day Universe.

Gravitational Waves and Intermediate-mass Black Hole Retention in Globular Clusters

Abstract The recent discovery of gravitational waves (GWs) has opened new horizons for physics. Current and upcoming missions, such as LIGO, VIRGO, KAGRA, and LISA, promise to shed light on black holes of every size from stellar mass (SBH) sizes up to supermassive black holes. The intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) family has not been detected beyond any reasonable doubt. Recent analyses suggest observational evidence for the presence of IMBHs in the centers of two Galactic globular clusters (GCs). In this paper, we investigate the possibility that GCs were born with a central IMBH, which undergoes repeated merger events with SBHs in the cluster core. By means of a semi-analytical method, we follow the evolution of the primordial cluster population in the galactic potential and the mergers of the binary IMBH-SBH systems. Our models predict ≈1000 IMBHs within 1 kpc from the galactic center and show that the IMBH-SBH merger rate density changes from Gpc−3 yr−1 beyond z ≈ 2 to Gpc−3 yr−1 at z ≈ 0. The rates at low redshifts may be significantly higher if young massive star clusters host IMBHs. The merger rates are dominated by IMBHs with masses between 103 and 104 M ⊙. Currently, there are no LIGO/VIRGO upper limits for GW sources in this mass range, but our results show that at design sensitivity, these instruments will detect IMBH-SBH mergers in the coming years. LISA and the Einstein Telescope will be best suited to detect these events. The inspirals of IMBH-SBH systems may also generate an unresolved GW background.

Gravitational waves with dark matter minispikes: The combined effect

It was shown that the dark matter(DM) minihalo around an intermediate mass black hole(IMBH) can be redistributed into a cusp, called the DM minispike. We consider an intermediate-mass-ratio inspiral consisting of an IMBH harbored in a DM minispike with nonannihilating DM particles and a small black hole(BH) orbiting around it. We investigate gravitational waves(GWs) produced by this system and analyze the waveforms with the comprehensive consideration of gravitational pull, dynamical friction and accretion of the minispike and calculate the time difference and phase difference caused by it. We find that for a certain range of frequency, the inspiralling time of the system is dramatically reduced for smaller central IMBH and large density of DM. For the central IMBH with $10^5M_\odot$, the time of merger is ahead, which can be distinguished by LISA, Taiji and Tianqin. We focus on the effect of accretion and compare it with that of gravitational pull and friction. We find that the accretion mass is a small quantity compared to the initial mass of the small BH and the accretion effect is inconspicuous compared with friction. However, the accumulated phase shift caused by accretion is large enough to be detected by LISA, Taiji and Tianqin, which indicate that the accretion effect can not be ignored in the detection of GWs.
